This place was just...okay. I went with a couple of coworkers. It looks bigger than it does on the outside so there's plenty of seating. Service was efficient so if you stop here during your lunch break then you'll get back to work in time. I had the red curry which I thought was decent but could use a little more flavor. It was bad but it wasn't good. I also ordered a Philadelphia hand roll. I was actually shocked that the sushi was decent for the area. The hand roll was $3 and the portions were generous. My coworkers got several pieces of sashimi and they were big especially for the price. Praise Jebus! A few years ago my neighborhood favorite Thai Racha on Longpoint closed down, and my search for a nearby standby may have been found. Thanks to the reviews of fellow yelper's I now know that a once defunct Chinese buffet has been transformed into a great looking establishment, (well what I could see anyways from picking up my to-go order). I called and ordered chicken pad thai, not bad, heavy on the noodles and not enough chicken, but huge amounts of egg, bonus or drawback depending on your taste, interesting way the presented the egg that's for sure. I also ordered red curry chicken as spicy as they could make it, hot but I sure could go hotter, I added Siracha to get it to my pallet level. The curry had green beans which were very fresh, and bamboo & red peppers. Cannot wait to try out more dishes, hope they can go the distance =D read more

The customer service was TERRIBLE. our group arrived at 1145 am, ordered at noon and still hadn't gotten our food by 1245 pm. We asked for our food to be boxed up and asked to speak to a manager at 1245 pm. The server immediately went to the manager to let him know, he looked at our table and nodded. We then watched the manager go to the kitchen to get a to go order and go back to check people out. Our food finally arrives at 1 pm and we go to the check out counter because that's where the manager is. He sees us behind the person he's currently checking out and flags over our waiter to check us out. He then WALKS AWAY FROM THE COUNTER! Our friend had to flag him down before he was gone and we spoke to him about what had happened. He told us it was OUR fault it took so long because we "were waiting for a friend". He wouldn't even listen when we told him we placed our order and told the waiter the last person cancelled at noon. He kept insisting it was our fault and next time we're in a hurry we should call in a to go order. TLDR: terrible customer service, food is average and the manager is rude. I almost feel bad because I went here once several months ago (when it was still a buffet), and liked it. Then my second child was born, so I cut back on eating out to see how another mouth to feed would impact my budget. By the time I went back, which was about a month ago, I brought a friend from work there expecting the same good, small buffet setup. Nope, they went to a menu system, which isn't terrible and actually has some benefits. * I knew I wouldn't stuff myself silly * The food should be fresh, in theory * More options Ultimately, we sat down and each ordered a lunch plate. I forgot what my friend got, but he said it sucked. I went with the suggestions from fellow yelpers and got the pad thai. It was okay. We both liked their Yellow Curry soup. We both admitted the egg rolls sucked. What's worse is we both had an upset stomach. I think I was bedridden for a day or two, I didn't really press my friend to see how bad his condition was. I felt compelled to come back and write an update because, while I'm still a fan of the place, I'm not as enthralled as I used to be. I used to want to come here every week because of great food and great service but now it's more like I want to get take-out from here rather than sit down. I am fairly sure that management has changed over the last six months. The new manager is rather pushy. He is especially pushy with what he called 'Dessert Sushi' which merely amounts to sticky rice with sweet potato. We tried it one time because he basically insisted...seriously. We were going to get fried ice cream but he wouldn't hear of it lol. I haven't had any desire to order dessert sushi again and I find it rather funny that I can hear him suggest it first thing to EVERY table that he services. Speaking of the manager servicing tables, he also pretty much takes service for the entire place upon himself which makes for very spotty and impersonal experience overall. Last time we were in (a Friday night) there was just him and one other guy waiting tables - and actually I think the other guy might have just been a food runner. This has been the case the last three times that we've been here. I don't know if he's trying to be skimpy on hiring staff or if he just can't keep waiters because they quit. Either way, not an improvement. The pad thai portion seems to have gotten smaller. It's still a good portion for the price, but not what it used to be. I went out on a limb last time and ordered the chef special which was chicken in a peanut/lemongrass sauce and it was cloyingly sweet. It was good at first, but after the 4th bite or so I started to feel sick from all the sugar. I should've just stuck to red curry. It's sad when places you like start go downhill...hopefully the manager will hire more wait staff and they'll go back to having both great food and service. 2 thumbs up for cleanliness of a Asian restaurant! I'll make this short and constructive! This is my 2nd time visiting and most likely will be my last. Only made this trip for coworkers birthday! One big thing is 8.95 for a wompish portion size plate! I should of taken pictures ! I had maybe 10 chopped up pieces of noodle Oh and I ordered spicy basil noodle! With a name like that you would expect a plate full of nicely cooked tender noodles. But instead I mistaken onions a few times for noodles yes yes there is a huge difference between noodles and onions but when both are white and greasy with dim lighting everything looks about the same on the plate! Was it flavorful I'll say 4 out of 10! And also paying 9 plus tax for lunch is a bit ridiculous. Lunch special price with chicken. We ordered delivery tonight and it was by far one of the worst meals we've ever gotten. The cashew nut chicken was a bowl of chili oil with no cashews that I could find. Lunch was very good! I looked for a 4 star+ on Yelp and decided on this place. It was a late lunch for me. When I got there, it was slow with only three tables dinning. I looked over the menu and select spicy basil chicken. It came with noodles and veggies. The veggies and the chicken was cooked perfectly. It was not spicy, and not much of basil flavor. Despite of that, the flavor was outstanding. Place looked clean and we'll decorated. I'm sure it was bc of eating at 2pm that the service was non-existent. Thai Jin is in the HEB complex. I'm going to assume that my mom and I went to Thai Jin on one of their bad days or that we just didn't order the right dishes here. Maybe it was a combination of both of those factors as well. Overall, when my mom and I came here we didn't like it too much. Our waiter couldn't even communicate with us so it was hard for my mom to ask about the Thai dishes she was interested in. We also had to call the waiter over for any service because he never stopped by after our food came out. It wasn't even busy because the place was pretty empty. Our Lettuce Wrap Chicken appetizer ($8.95) was a good 1/5. The chicken was bland, but the peanut sauce really helped with the lack of flavor. However, the sauce was over-seasoned and too overwhelming, in a bad way, for the tastebuds. The minced chicken was also sitting in a pool of chicken broth or water or whatever it was. Not good for the lettuce wrapping because when we would scoop the chicken into the lettuce there would just be liquid flowing everywhere. Our Chicken Pad Thai saved the day a little 3/5. I'm accustomed to tofu already being included with the Pad Thai, but here you choose between Chicken or Pork ($8.95,) or Beef or Tofu (9.95). It was really interesting to see the noodles wrapped in a thin egg blanket. The egg blanket itself was a tad bit dry, the noodles were dripping in too much oil, and the chicken had some strange....crunching texture. If my mom couldn't figure out what that chicken crunch was suppose to be, then the pieces of chicken breast are not suppose to have any "crunch." We wanted more limes for the Pad Thai but didn't want to call the waiter over anymore and thought he just might come by (he didn't by the way). I would never recommend the Drunken Noodles for anyone to try, 0/5. I don't know the culture or history behind this dish, but I'm going to guess you probably have to eat this dish when you're drunk for it to taste good, hence the name. It was just plain bad. When we were trying to decide which dishes to order, my mom picked out the Yelp picture of the Drunken Noddles because she really liked the aesthetics of the dish and was quite excited to try it. Needless to say her bubble abruptly burst when we actually had it in front of us. Bland and nothingness. It's not oily though. We got the Tofu Drunken Noodles so it was $9.95. If we wanted to add in meat, it would be another 2 bucks and my mom didn't want to pay for anymore disappointment. The fried tofu was actually somewhat decent though. Service was good but the food was less than impressive. Chicken pad thai was weirdly sweet and sour, almost like it had ketchup in it? The pineapple curry was meh with fishy undertones. And the Thai coffee was a stab to the heart! It's just supposed to be coffee and condensed milk, and I'm pretty sure they just substituted chocolate syrup with a splash of milk. It was comfortable inside and the appetizers and sides were good, especially the cheese rolls. I am uncertain how they've earned the high rankings from because this was completely not good. It was mean and three other people and I suggested Thai since I knew this place was here. On first entering, the places was filled for lunch but it was a but dark inside and that always makes me wonder what are they hiding because we don't need ambiance during lunch. I thought since it was busy than this must be good. Boy was it a disappointment. The food was too salty! The soup came out and it was too salty to finish. The salads were next and it was completely drenched in dressing. Then the main courses for lunch and we all ordered different plates to try. None, I mean none of them were missed by the salt fairy. One of the noodles plate had too much sauce and it seemed like a pile of mush with some vegetables. Just not visually appealing nor appetizing. The manager did stop by to check how were things and he was very pleasant and jokes around. But it wasn't worth another trip when none of the 4 dishes plus soups and salads were liked by any of us. The good: They have a very good fried pineapple rice. The bad: Service, misleading menu. Mediocre: sushi, miso soup, "dino[saurs]" Everything else: uneventful. 1. Kids' menu says kids dishes come with a soup or salad. The waitress said it is only on the weekdays. I assume kids shouldn't eat those on the weekend. 2. The menu says the same dishes come with ice cream. The waitress confirmed that, but we've never got it. 3. Sashimi combo comes with a miso soup and the salad, and we confirmed that while ordering. We've got all the food we ordered, and we had to ask about the soup and the salad, and only then we've got those... And no apologies whatsoever, as if everything was normal. Maybe that's their "normal"? 4. While ordering, we had this dialog: -- Can you make yellowtail roll? -- No. -- But you have yellowtail. It's a simple standard roll. Could you please ask your chef? -- Even if he can make it, we cannot. What if you ask for it next time? ... (I think there will be no next time.) 5. The kids' meal "Dino" promises the dinosaurs-shaped chicken nuggets. What you get are star- and fish- shaped nuggets. Do they think children don't know the difference? Imagine children's disappointment. 6. The [steamed] broccoli that are included in that kids' meal are below average (I wouldn't eat them myself, but luckily, the child ate them). Where do I begin? I must say, I was skeptical going into Thai Jin for two reasons; 1, I have never had Thai food. 2, it was inside a strip mall. Sweet Jesus was I surprised. As soon as I swung open the door, I was in aww of the interior design. Very elegant with classical Asian accents. We got seated, and a friend of mine recommended the Spicy Basil, max hot level, with beef. Food arrived promptly and mine came in this super cool brass Thai design bowl. Dove into the dish and my tongue exploded out of pure love. Yes. Love. After I scarfed down this heavenly meal, I felt a glow in my belly. The spices seemed to create a concoction of happiness. I felt as if I had ate a bit of the sun. So yea, food was 10/10 The staff was dope. The server was professional, the owner seemed like the dad you want to have. and mother. and uncle. ect. Also, super affordable, i got the meal, drink, and this sweet sweet dessert (banana tempura with ice cream, drizzled in chocolate love) it was like 14 bucks. The red curry was spicy without damaging the flavor of the dish (I selected american hot) Lettuce wraps were a hit as an appetizer, so much so I ended up ordering 2 more orders to go and took it to Rockport for the evening canal hopping snack. Best Thai place in this area! Certain items on menu are average but overall I love this place for lunch or quick dinner. Lunch portion comes with side salad and soup of the day (I often get this yellow curry soup with bean sprout it's amazing). Customer service is nice. My favorite here is their red curry and I always add extra veggies. They also have sushi here which is kind of odd for Thai restaurant. But it's reasonably priced. I vacillated between four and three stars and decided Thai Jin just didn't quite cut a four star rating for me. I was hesitant to try Tai Jin because this is a Japanese/Chinese/Sushi/Thai place. Menus are marked clearly. We were very pleasantly surprised with our meals. First came the chicken curry soup of the day. Talk about YUM! It was very light, not heavy like a hot and sour soup one normally gets at a Chinese diner. It was so good I want to find a recipe for make it at home. I ordered Thai Basil beef, husband ordered sushi. Husband ordered hot tea, it's a green tea and comes a mug at a time. I ordered iced tea and I got a huge big gulp plastic glass of it. It wasn't bad tea but y' know, everyone has their own standards for the stuff, it was meh for me. The beef in my dish was tenderized, the dish itself was medium spicy as I had asked. I got a nice sized portion. Noodles firm, broccoli okay. Maybe I 'm a fool to expect to see basil in my Thai basil dish, but there wasn't any. Thoughts? Nevertheless, my meal was very tasty and I would order it again. Husband loved my eggroll. It was a sushi-like steamed thing. A salad came with my meal as well, and with it came a delicious ginger dressing. I thought it would be strange to have an eggroll, soup, lettuce salad, and noodles in one setting but it was actually a nice surprise. The portions sized are perfect. I got my dish seven minutes before my husband's sushi was delivered. I suspected the time lag was due to the sushi being an art form and it takes a while to create it. but I still would have liked our meals delivered a little closer than seven minutes apart. When we walked in, there was a sign on the door looking for chef and waitstaff help so we forgive the time lapse between meal delivery. The waitstaff were actually running at some points, but they were friendly and accommodating and very capable. They still stopped by to ask if we needed more tea, and even a waiter who wasn't our waiter asked us if we needed anything else. Yet another restaurant that I regret discovering too late! (I'm moving from Houston in 2 days) I've lived in NW Houston for 2.5 years, and in that time hadn't been able to find a single place with really good Pad Thai, even when venturing out to other parts of Houston to find it. From the very first bite of Thai Jin's Pad Thai, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. They serve it differently than most other places, with a thin egg layer on top of the pad thai, instead of being cooked into it (kind of like omurice, but a less fluffier egg). The flavor is amazing, and I got "hot" and it was just the right amount of spice. If you have a high standard for pad thai, I would definitely recommend trying this place out. This is now my favorite place for Chinese food in Houston. I walked in this evening and it was pretty much dead inside with the exception of two other tables that were occupied. The staff was super friendly and gave me a warm welcome. If you are a tea drinker order the iced green tea. It is so refreshing and a nice alternative to regular iced tea. I add just a smidgeon of sweetener and it tastes perfect! I ordered the cheese rolls for a appetizer. There are two to an order which are paired with a mild sweet plum sauce. These aren't like the cheese puffs you would get elsewhere. These actually look like a spring roll as they are rolled (duh) instead of the wonton pinched at the top. They were nice and flaky, cheese was so creamy and with the plum sauce they were to die for! For my entrée I had The General Tso's. Just to let you know, they use all white meat in their chicken dishes! The batter they use compliments the chicken as it is light so the chicken is light and crispy-crunchy. The sauce has to be homemade as it is the best I've ever had. You can also get it as spicy as you want! They even throw on a few steamed carrots and broccoli so that you can convince yourself that you are eating semi healthy lol. Thai Jin definitely deserves a 4-star review. My first impression with this fusion restaurant far exceeded my expectations of a restaurant located in this seedy area. I've been here a couple of times already, and both the food and service have been great every time. The menu is quite extensive, but some of my favorite items are: * Sushi Combo B - The combo consists of 2 pieces of tuna, yellowtail and salmon nigiri each, spicy tuna roll (8 pieces) and your classic California roll (another 8 pieces). It's also served with a cup of miso soup and a salad. So for $15, you bet your bottom dollar this boat is worth it. The restaurant uses a ginger dressing for the salad, so I didn't eat it because I hate ginger, but the miso soup was very delicious. It wasn't salty at all and it came with plenty of tofu and seaweed. Each of the nigiri pieces were cut nicely; they were thick, juicy, and fresh. As for the spicy tuna roll, I personally think it could be better (there's no cucumber in it!) but it's edible and I'll eat it regardless. This is an extremely filling entree so I would advise against ordering more food unless you plan on sharing the boat! * Chicken Pad Thai - This was probably one of the best pad thais I've had in awhile. The noodles were cooked perfectly: not too dry or too moist. There was plenty of chicken, which weren't overcooked either, and the sauce was delectable as it wasn't overbearingly sweet as many other Pad Thais are made to be. The best part of it all? The presentation, and how the egg covers the noodles. You're left to mix up the awesomeness or eat as is. It was wonderful. * Curry - Red or yellow, both curries were delicious. Dinner entrees come with salads (if I can remember correctly) and the curries are served with a bowl of rice. We ended up having to ask for extra rice because there was a lot of curry. * Cheese Roll - Yummms. Following other Yelpers' recommendations, I ordered this appetizer and it was not disappointing. It was hot, fresh, and the cheese was so creamy, it oozed out of the bottom of the rolls. Messy? A little bit. Satisfying? Absolutely. The only problem with this is that it's not "shareable" since it comes with two small rolls to an order. Thai Jin does roll up some pretty sweet sushi rolls, too, and I've had some of them but I can't remember the names of them. However, most of the rolls are tasty and worth the price. I definitely prefer hand rolls, though. Overall, the service has always been great. It doesn't seem like a lot of people frequent the restaurant for dinner (or at least the nights I've been), so walking in for dinner on a Saturday night at 8pm wasn't a problem at all. And even though it is relatively empty, the staff never slacks on service... Ok, who am I kidding? I love the fact that I found a great restaurant with great food and service that doesn't make me wait an hour before sitting! read more

I live close by, finally decided to give Thai Jin a shot. I will be coming back, as the Thai noodle dish I has was quite good, and the varying levels of spice are good for a wide variety of people. The price is really, really good and they don't skimp on portions. Good veggies, nice texture in the noodles and decent quality meats, too. The ambiance is nice enough for the (older) strip mall it lives in, so don't expect to impress a date here. Good service, even when I came at an off-peak time for dinner. I will come again and try a non-Thai dish, I'm curious to see if they can really do it all in one kitchen! read more

I'm writing this as I'm waiting for dessert to arrive. This place is a hidden treasure in spring branch. The service is quick and friendly and the food is delicious. I got the vegetable egg rolls and pad Thai with shrimp. Both were delicious - hot and full of flavor. I had one of the most disappointing experience here. Walking in to an empty restaurant at 7 pm on a Sunday evening, I was surprised by how spacious the place was. Being the only customer there, I thought why not be a lil greedy and take the booth for myself to enjoy. I had an idea of what to get due to my prior detective work of the place. Pad thai and calamari. Now I made sure to ask the waitress what was in the pad thai but she didnt seem too sure of it. So I just told her not to put any bean sprout in my food. Few minute later, I got a salad and my calamari shortly afterward. I was quite surprised at the little portion I got for calamari. Roughly around 8 pieces of calamari with their special sauce on the side. Calamari was battered quite nicely but lacked seasoning. You have to eat the calamari with their sauce or else you're just chewing on crispy squid. Next off pad thai, remember I said no bean sprout. Well, you guessed it, they got it in there. The entire time i was just trying to pick the bean sprout out of my food as I ate it slowly. Did I enjoy my meal? Not quite. Felt like a monkey trying to pick out lice from another monkey. Don't order the pad thai, although it looks delicious with its egg wrapped pouch, the pad thai lacks flavor and noodles were soggy, overcooked and broken. (Apparently you don't get the egg on top during lunch.) Sushi was eh, and not worth it at all. On the brighter side, the red curry was actually quite delicious and very flavorful.
