Take out has gotten REAALLLLY slow. They also haven't mastered that American hospitality thing yet. I order here takeout a lot because it's just so hard to screw up Thai food, and they are super close. But every time I go I wait for a while. Typically I call in, they say "15 minutes", I show up in 30, and wait another 30. I've been showing up even later each time, and I still wait most nights. Last time, they didn't put the soup on the counter, I paid for my food and grabbed the big bag. I called them to say there was no soup and they just argued with me that it was my fault. I finally caved and picked up the soup, and it tasted funky. It made me realize that the Tom Yum soup has been getting progressively worse. Decent enough. But not enough to earn 3 stars. The place wasn't very busy, so our group of 5 were seated promptly. The place is pretty dimmed with a huge fish tank in the back of the restaurant. We started off with our appetizers of fresh spring rolls and a fried chicken with mustard sauce which were good, but nothing especially amazing. One little nice thing about the place is if your veg you can substitute any of the meat for tofu - unfortunately all the tofu comes in fried form. They also do the spicy factor pretty well here. Pass on any of the traditional drinks here; they came out to be very watered down in my experience. And you'll likely be waiting for your check to come for a 1/2 hr. I think this place could have better potential if the preparation of the food were more fresh/steamed and change up the decor to something more brightening. Prices are a little high, but portions are very large; about one and a half times what I'm used to getting from a usual thai restaurant. This is such a frickin nice restaurant! I love it! The service is good. I go there for lunch when I have the time and money. I live in the Green Lake area and the lady who owns it is very personable and takes time to talk with me about what I might like (since I don't know that much about Thai food). I usually like to get the Phad Thai (noodles) but not spicy. Though I learned they can make it so hot to drop your pants. I can get full at lunch time on very little money...so ya...it's reasonable. I was fortunate enough to live across the street from Thai Ocean for a year, and would give them a call whenever I craved their Phad Thai, which was often!! Its definitely worth visiting, even if you have other Thai restaurants close by, this one will not disappoint! My favorite order was the Phad Thai with beef and spring rolls. The only time I didn't order this I got the Thai soup because I was sick, which was also very good. I always got 2 stars which was just the right amount of spice to complement the delicious sauce. Their peanut sauce is absolutely to die for, and I found myself dipping anything and everything in it just so it wouldn't go to waste! My boyfriend preferred the beef and broccoli, which he defines as the best in Seattle. The orders were always ready in 15 minutes or less and the quality was always amazing. My only con was that I found it to be a tad pricey, but I don't think it's any more expensive than other Thai places. read more

They are super helpful and have on multiple occasions stayed past closing time to allow me to pickup a to go order of phad thai, pineapple fried rice, or swimming rama. Tonight was the first time I went to Thai Ocean, but I was so satisfied that I can't help writing a review for it! My friend and I ordered the Phad Thai and Fried Rice. They're both really good! When I saw that they do not use MSG, I thought the food won't taste that good (I'm not really a fan of MSG, but I know that food with MSG will taste somewhat better.) However, to my surprise, both dishes were very rich with flavors. We ordered 5-stars and they were spicy enough. Food came out pretty fast. Besides the good food, service was great. Staffs were really nice and friendly. The restaurant itself was nice and clean. They also have some outdoor seatings, so it should be perfect during summer, where you can enjoy the sunshine and the view. While we were there, about 4-5 people came in to order to go. I guess that's understandable since they cook the food pretty fast. This is a great place to eat after you run around Green Lake. On top of those, food was cheap, and the portion was quite generous. Almost everything is under $10. Lunch menu is about $6 only. I will definitely come back, and I'll bring more friends next time. Really looking forward to try other dishes! read more

I went here with a group of friends this afternoon. Oddly enough, I did a search on Yelp to find the nearest place (within a reasonable distance from my friend's place) and boom, off we went. The food was mediocre (especially for the price -- maybe it's okay during the week -- for their lunch menu... if you have nowhere else to go and you want horrible service) and the waiter was forgetful, rude. I am not sure why they even ask how you want your meal (mild, medium, or spicy) because apparently they don't listen, then they blame it on you for not seeing the red star, which means something is "a bit spicy". A bit spicy? Okay, this isn't the first thai restaurant I've been to, and whether it's a star or a pepper, I know what ONE red indicator means. My friend ordered his pad thai super spicy and it wasn't spicy at all. Not only was the food burning a hole through my stomach (after he asked me how I wanted it and I told him mild), but the dish I ordered literally only had five pieces of pork in it. Yes. Five little pieces. Soooo I'm paying $12 and change for this? I politely told him that it was way too spicy for me and then he proceeded to cop an attitude with me. He forgot to bring out my friend's tea so we just ended up sharing mine. Which saved us time and saved me from having to drink that bitter mess. Every time he came back to the table he felt the need to mention the spicy pork and green bean mess they tried to serve me. "Next time..." There won't be a next time. He came out and told us it's easier for him and us if we go inside to pay. How is that easier for us, exactly? He's glad that I left him a tip. I really didn't want to and I'm not sure why I did. This place is DELICIOUS! Also, the quality of food is phenomenal. We ordered the fresh rolls, and they are some of the best I've ever experienced. I also got the yellow curry which was extremely flavorful with tons of carrots, chicken and potatoes. The portion sizes are big enough that you have leftovers the next day. Jintana the owner is a saint. She is God's gift to plants and has kept her bamboo and other plants alive for over 20 years. This woman is beyond friendly and genuinely cares about her customers experience. The wine pours are beyond impressive. For $4.95, you really can't beat it! I've now been to Thai Ocean twice. My first experience wasn't so bad, which is what made me think it would be okay to come here out of all the possible Asian places in town when I decided to capitulate to my week-long craving for Asian food. Man, what a mistake! The first time I went I got the Pad See Eew which was pretty good albeit very greasy. Not necessarily the best Pad See Eew in Seattle, but good enough to calm the craving. The guy who stays up front to take orders was pretty hospitable and friendly the first time I went to get take-out; he even offered me & my dog some water while we waited. This second time I went, he was not quite as friendly. When I asked him to describe one of the dishes to me, he said he didn't know how, in a tone that implied it was a stupid question. If you're working there, you should know what the components of each dish taste like & what they're made from! He didn't offer me a drink while I waited, and given how hot it was outside, I would have appreciated a glass of water. I have no idea why I left him a tip, but I stupidly did. I ended up spending $11 on the Swimming Angels, which really ought to be called the Drowning Angels given how much peanut sauce they ladle on there. Disgusting. This is what $11 bought me: a bag of ready-washed spinach from the grocery store, one small chicken breast sliced up, and three (yup, just 3) quarter-size sliced carrots DRENCHED in the most nauseatingly sugary peanut sauce I have ever tasted. I could have easily made this dish at home for less than $6 and had leftovers. The reason I eat Asian food out is because I don't know how to cook it; this did not count as Thai food to me, and left me quite disappointed. The only "Thai" component was the peanut sauce, but it was the least authentic-tasting peanut sauce I've ever eaten (& I've eaten a lot of Thai food). My last complaint is that the nearly $10 price tag didn't include rice! They wanted $1.50 for rice! Since when do dinner entrees at Asian restaurants not include rice?! I might be willing to change my rating if my third time ends up being more satisfying, but as it stands now, I will not be going there for a reallly long time. If it's wasn't 100 yards from my house, I most likely wouldn't go there. Not to say it's bad, I just wouldn't go out of my way b/c there are SO many Thai places in Seattle (I prefer Siam Lake Union). Pad Thai and curries are good and I like that they have brown rice as an option (vs. just white rice). Went here with a Friend the other night because the place we planned on going to was closed. Short-and-sweet critique, I'd say if you are local & looking for some quick takeout, ... maybe. But once was probably enough. There are just too many places in Seattle to return somewhere that doesn't "wow" you in some way! We got there before they 'opened', so I was able to relax and enjoy the little patio outside until my Friend joined me. Well- they decided to 'open', but never turned the sign around or invited us inside! People just began walking in... Well, it didn't matter too much. It wasn't all that crowded. I think most people order takeout there. The one girl who helped us had her head down on the counter sleeping before we came in, and was doing homework most of the time we were there. We ordered an appetizer of fried tofu, with the red Panang curry and swimming Rama. People (who worked there? caterers? really-familiar-customers?) were running in & out from the kitchen to their cars the whole time, the portions certainly were not overly-generous. Atmosphere: Casual, interesting authentic decor, fun fish-tank to look at. Good place to bring a girlfriend/date. Food: I've only tried the Pad Thai here, so my review is based on this single dish. Overall, it is hit-or-miss. Sometimes it's really good, with a lot of sauce to make it more 'wet.' Othertimes, it seems like the portion that i was given has been sitting in the kitchen for a while as it's dry and a bit soggy. I have found this Pad Thai to be more greasy than most places, but it's great for a hangover! I've asked for NO sprouts before and found them among the noodles...bit of a pet peeve of mine. However, it is good Pad Thai most of the time, so I generally forgive them for this. I have only eaten in the restaurant once, and it was nice because even though it's generally not too busy (1-2 other groups) it still feels private. Staff: Friendly, quick, gives me hot tea when I come in and wait for my order! That's a big plus for me because I love Oolong and Green Tea =) Price: Cheaper than other Thai places in the area, and fair for what you get (fairly large portions, although sometimes not the best Pad Thai if it's an off day) Final Thought: Hit's the spot when I have a Thai craving. I also agree with Jenna F. and the food does run a little on the spicy side so this isn't the place to risk ordering up a star because you'll likely be out-spiced! Also, make sure to check whether your entree comes with a side of rice (if you're expecting one) because I know the curries do NOT so you have to order a side for an additional $1.75 -- doesn't break the bank but it would be disappointing to order take-out and not get any rice. When it comes to Thai food I have definitely been around the block and while I casually frequented many establishments, none had won my heart. None, that is, until Thai Ocean. With its fresh daily roses and a giant, well-maintained fish tank along the whole back wall, it was love at first sight. My fondness only grew after I tried their scrumptious Yellow Curry and their yummy Pad See Ew noodles (their Pad Thai is good too, worry not), now I'm smitten. I go at least 2 to 3 times a month, can't get enough. The service is great, I really only ask that they handle with care, and it's a convenient location with free parking. Four stars instead of five because once my dish was unusually bland and very different from the other times I'd ordered it. I mentioned this to the waiter and he explained that the owner (and head cook) was out of town and that the replacement cook didn't put the same "love" into her cooking. The waiter was super nice about it, he even gave me free Thai iced tea, but the owner needs to find a better substitute or train the current one better. read more

I just love this place! I am a somewhat regular here; I love the neighborhood and the prices are reasonable. My two fave dishes are the Pad See Yu and the Pad Thai. This was my actual lunch today. Got here about 3. This is our very first time here. There open signs were on their door. After perusing the Takeout menu and deciding on my order, I had to ring the bell at the front desk to get their attention in the kitchen. You could hear people talking and a lady immediately came out. She took my order and after 10 -15 minutes my order was neatly baged up and ready. Brownie points for asking if I needed utensils. But she only put 1 fork instead of 2, but she never asked how many I needed. I ordered stuffed wontons or crab rangoons. One of the best I've ever had. It contained both real crab, surimi, cream cheese, and green onions. It was so good that we tore into them in the car in the parking lot knowing they were still hot, we continued to keep biting into them. They were fried well, light and crisp in clean oil. The plum sauce was good too. The beef phad Thai with fried tofu was really good too. I am about to eat these leftovers now and I'm gonna bet they will be tastier than earlier...so now I've finished off my phad Thai. Still very tasty. Be careful though because I found a few slivers of beef bone. Overall pretty good tho. read more

I live near Green Lake, and have access to several Thai restaurants in the area. Fortunately, the best I've had around here is 5 blocks away, which is Thai Ocean. That being the case, I tend to call in orders, do the pick-up, and eat at home. Even after being packaged and schlepped, the food here has never let me down. The Crab Wonton was squishy and bizarre once (and only once!), but other menu items keep me coming back. The Panang Curry is out-of-control delicious, as are the Phad Thai, Moo Katrium, and dipping sauce for the fresh spring rolls. read more
