Called in my order at 5:05 pm. I finally got my order at 630 pm after following up with hostess and waitress asking where order is. Hostess says she will go check on it but never comes back to give me an answer. I get it that it was a very busy evening but tell me why it took me over an hour when I only ordered 2 food items? After the 3rd time asking where my food is the hostess decides to tell me there was a mix up on my curry order. How the f do u mix up a 2 item take out order and it's be nice if she would've told me that instead of making me go up to keep asking. I told them I'd it was gonna be more waiting I'm leaving and don't need the food. She leaves for a good 5 minutes and comes back and She knew I was pissed she makes a guy waiter come cash me out and the guy had the nerve to give me attitude for being upset. He points to the long line of packaged food on the counter waiting to be picked up and says with attitude "can't you see we've been busy?" That pissed me off even more. This is completely u acceptable. He also didn't give af about the complimentary Thai tea the hostess told me she would give me. The guy waiter charges me for it also and to top it all off. I get home and sure enough my order will still incorrect. My "drunken noodles" weren't even right. They gave me "pad se ew" not 86. Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodle) and it was cold! read more

I love that Thai Orchid allows for Uber Eats to deliver! I am attaching our receipt so you can see charges. This meal fed three adults. It is well worth the $6.50 trip fee from downtown to a 20 min drive any direction. Saved us over an hour and a half between driving there, back and eating there. I've had to go vegan due to health issues, and ordered my yellow curry to be vegan. What I got was runny "curry" with an abundance of fish sauce. After asking for it to be sent back and getting my new plate without fish sauce, it was significantly spicier and the tofu was now uncooked. The food was a 1 star, and the chef's ability to react responsibly to an order was even lower. Beyond this, I still had to pay for the food- $2 more expensive than was listed in the menu. This is the worst Thai restaurant we've ever experienced. We used the peanut sauce to cover the dry and bland Pad Thai, and the hot chili oil to provide the same effect upon the Pad Kee Mao, which was bland, dry and had no vegetables. None of the entrees were finished. I had Tom Yum which I promptly had the waiter remove. Being a 'good sport' we took the check and paid without issue. Thai Orchid is one of the fancier places in Salem, a top from the street level and located within the Salem Centre. The decor (furniture, wall decorations, etc.) are very nice however, each time I've gone there the place has been nearly empty. It only took me a glance at the menu to understand why, Thai food here is expensive. The service could have been better during my visits, as they are slow and not as attentive as they could have been (especially since it wasn't busy!). The food itself was tasty but nothing impressive. I'm certain other Thai places could emulate their presentation and flavor just fine. And thats just it, there are other places that could do better with price and service. If the view is what one might go for, then go for lunch when downtown is a little more lively. read more

I have become increasingly disappointed with the quality of the food. The sweet & sour sauce was changed a few years ago; I miss it. The service was okay; we were told that because we were a party of six, they couldn't accommodate our request to sit by the window. Came here to pick up an order, the lady told me she just needed to bag it up, the 5 people who came in after me got their orders before me so I asked what's up and she told me I'm being impatient and need to wait, so I wait 10 more minutes and she still refuses to help. Decent Thai restaurant in downtown Salem. We had a pumpkin beef curry which tasted great and the pad thai was fine -- but a little bland. They forgot to package plates for our carryout order, even though we asked for them -- which was pretty inconvenient. Overall, good ethnic food for downtown Salem. Came to salem with my fiance for a military event and it was late and i wanted asian food so we found this place. This place was hard to find if you didnt know were it was. Took us 10 minutes to figure out were the place was. Service was rushed. My food was cold when it should have been warm. My fiance ordered pad se ew and the beef meat was cold but noodles were hot. We ran out of water and they never asked if we wanted a refill( never got water after we ran out). Never checked up on us. They were not busy either it was us and another couple. I was visiting a friend in Salem, and we were in the downtown area wanting to get take out to eat at home. We happened upon Thai Orchid, and ordering at the counter was quick and easy. We ordered the Thai Orchid curry, the cashew nut, and the pad see ew, all with tofu. The curry was very spicy but tasty, the cashew nut had a mild but good flavor, but the pad see ew was awful. The noodles were like shredded tires, really tough and gummy, plus the flavor of the sauce was off. After that experience, I would not order noodles from them again, but other dishes seemed fine. read more

The dish the was delivered had 5 small pieces of chicken, hardly a cup of noodles and 3/4 full container of broth which wasn't enough for the overly cooked noodles and crispy noodles. I have frequented Thai Orchid for many years but, after my last experience, I will not be back.. I phoned in our order and was told my meals would be ready in fifteen minutes. We arrived at the restaurant approximately fifteen minutes later. As parking was difficult to find, I sent my boyfriend in to pick up our dinner while I circled the block. After fifteen minutes of circling I found a parking place and texted my boyfriend. He told me that he was greeted and told that hostess would check on his order and her hadn't seen anyone since. Ten minutes later, he got our food. At that time he was informed that a large order had come in around the same time as ours and it was filled before our order. When my boyfriend expressed his displeasure he was told that it was a $250(!) order and very important. He was offered no apology or discount for the wait. I called the restaurant to express my displeasure and had it explained again that they got a very important order and got very little remorse until I said I would be actively discouraging people from eating there and writing reviews about our service that night. At that point, I was told to calm down and be reasonable. By this time, I was beyond frustrated and extremely hungry so I hung up. Over the course of the evening, I received five phone calls and a text message from the manager, who wanted to "discuss my experience" that evening. So, they were completely capable of finding my number for damage control but not to call me and say, "Your order is going to take longer than we anticipated"? I don't think so. I will NEVER patronize this business again. read more

So I haven't been there in a little while, but...the experience was so singular the last night we went in that we haven't been back, and we still tell stories about it. So it wasn't our first choice the night we went, but our planned venue had had an unfortunate kitchen fire that night. So Thai Orchid was close & I'd been once before. There was almost no one in the restaurant when we went in - it was a Tuesday, not right after work, so we thought, okay, this will let us talk & enjoy our dinner in a leisurely fashion. The other lone diner got up & left while we were still waiting for menus. And waited. And waited. In fact, that was the theme of the whole night. We got plenty of talking done. We were just too exhausted & had had a tough time getting together for this meeting to get up & leave, and after a certain point, it got hilarious. It seemed that the lone waitress spoke only English, and the lone cook spoke only Thai, or some other Asian language. They could not communicate, and one or both would vanish for long periods of time. We came up with all kinds of wild theories as to what they were doing when they weren't visible. I mean, it was a case of "could've taken cash drawer & walked out in a leisurely manner" if we were that kind of people. It took like 45 minutes to get simple drinks - Thai iced teas & coffees - and then 15 minutes after that before our lone appetizer appeared - guess they had to chase down & kill the chickens for the satay. Then 25 more minutes till dinner came. The saving grace: the food was pretty good, and despite my misgivings, mostly correct. One person didn't get the fried rice they asked for specially instead of the steamed, but it was now after 9 PM and we just didn't want to take a chance that someone would be sent to Laos to harvest rice. My husband's pad thai was good, my curry was decent if not spectacular, and not watery. Hence, no return and not a great review. read more

So far, the best restaurant I've eaten at in Salem, except Denny's was actually the best, which isn't a good commentary. My guy and I split the spring rolls, which were decently tasty with pretty good peanut dipping sauce. We also split the chicken pad thai, which was pretty good. Service was friendly and fast. This place is in a mall, but once inside, had a pleasant interior and feel. Salem restaurants seem to have prices on a par with, if not higher than, some of the restaurants in Portland. I am going to try to be as polite as possible here, because the people that run this place seem perfectly nice. Food was mediocre. Service was abysmal. We went today, Mother's Day, with a party of 9, with a reservation. Our server was sweet but when it came time for food to arrive, it was an absolute train wreck. We received 2 plates every 10 minutes until our server stopped delivering. Then three of us sat there with nothing. With a gentle reminder, 2 more were served. My brother never got anything. The server didn't even notice he was sitting there with no plate. I get that mistakes are made and the kitchen is sometimes slow, but the worst part of the experience is that no real apologies were made and no manager ever came to follow up or offer to make things right. My brother was charged for his app even after they completely forgot his entree. As an afterthought, the server gave him a free app to go. Cause that's what you want for lunch. How about the entree that you forgot?! We had to ask to speak to management. I think they are husband and wife; I KNOW they are both deer in headlights. They tried to blame the server by saying that they can't keep track of the entire restaurant. Uh, isn't that your job? They said the server wanted to take one plate at a time so she wouldn't get confused. ?? When I asked why other servers don't help carry out food to large parties, the manager actually said "I am going to write that down. That's a good idea." Seriously? Pitiful. Oh and they offered to give me 50% off my entree, not my entire bill, mind you. Oh but wait, you had a hair in your salad so we will happily take that off too. Gee, thanks. Average Thai food, odd restaurant. Thai Orchid is a Portland/Salem area chain of Thai restaurants. This location is on the second floor of "Liberty Plaza," a building that looks like it's seen better days. It's connected to the Chemekta Parkade along with JCPenney and Salem Center, but the tenants in this building scream 'low rent' to 'deserted.' There is a Starbucks on the street level and Thai Orchid is on the second floor in the corner. Food here was fine, but I'm no expert on Thai food. This is nothing like PokPok and is quite American style. Menus were tattered and need to be re-printed. Carpet looked like it could use a good steam clean. Staff are friendly and prompt. Both times I've eaten here, I've been seated in the corner windows, probably to help make the restaurant look busy. The decor is not very "Thai" and it seems like this restaurant used to be something else - maybe Italian. I did like that a side of rice noodles was cheap to add to my Tom Yum soup, as I wanted to make something similar to Thaifoon's version of the dish and just find soup easier to eat with something besides broth and mushrooms. read more

My seven year old wanted thai food today (go figure) so I decided to try a place we'd never been. I usually don't go downtown for food because of Salem's idiotic parking and the type of people who frequent the area. Nevertheless, we stopped in just before 12:30pm. Walking up we noticed a 40-top seated right at the front. It was some gigantic family event that apparently didn't call ahead (according to the waitress who seated us). In front of us were two people who were ordering food to go. We were seated where there was a view of Liberty and Court streets, and besides us and the 40-top, there was one other table with two people who had already ordered. Fine, I thought. I poured over the menu and deiced on the halibut clay pots, but when I ordered the waitress who spoke not a word of English indicated that it wasn't available. I mistook the splotches over just the title to be smeared ink. Oh well, I ordered the asparagus and shrimp dish. My son ordered something with bamboo shoots because that's all he came for apparently. :D And then the wait. Just as were ordered a 3 top was seated right next to us. We all waited. And waited. And waited... our waitress never came by to apologize, but the other table's waitress aknowledged them, apologized, and assured them that their spring rolls would be right up. Five minutes later she came back and said they had just run out of spring rolls and offered them something else. They accepted. 30 minutes later another 3 top was seated a few tables away. They ordered quickly and the waitress took off. 15 minutes later she had returned with THEIR food, but not ours or the people who were seated next to us! One of the other patrons and I exchanged annoyed looks, and the waitress quickly rushed over and said that our food was next. Another 15 minutes later (it's 1:30pm at this point), and our food has yet to show up. Just as I'm about to get up and walk out, our waitress shows up with food. She says something that I don't understand, but at the time I thought she was saying that we would only be charged for one dish for the inconvenience. Slightly less annoyed, we dug in. It was just ok. An hours wait for this? is what I was thinking. The flavor was ok and I guess I would eat it again, but not if it meant waiting another hour for it. Now, the explanation given to us was that the huge group was clogging up the kitchen, but if that was the case I would expect to see the people who ordered food to go still waiting when we were. They weren't. It turned out that I wasn't compted anything--not even a soda. I didn't complain and I still gave a 10% tip, but I probably shouldn't have. I really feel that something more than a half-ass apology from a waitress should have been done for us (and the table next to us). I might eat here again, but probably not soon. read more

Finally! Some decent pad se ew! Generous portions of broccoli, and noodles that are in tact and not clumpy (Diana U. would be so happy). Service was friendly and seating by the windows is great. However, the other half of the restaurant is just odd looking though... fake street lamps are arranged around the lower dining area, and it looks kind of tacky and I'm not sure I even understand why they're there.. Large portions and legit noodles aside, my big disappointment with the food was the lack of spiciness. It was not even mildly spicy. I thought this was Thai food? I even reiterated to the waitress before she left with our order that I wanted spicy. Don't hold back on the spiciness. She assured me she understood. Well... either she is stupid or the kitchen is confused, because I could have been eating plain mashed potatoes in terms of a measurable spice level. But, nonetheless, my mom enjoyed her mango curry and I still was happy with my dish, even if it wasn't as flavorful as I'm used to. read more

I still think this place is above average for Salem, but I have to address the issue of service here. The servers are very nice, but they seem pretty incompetent. I went in a group of 5 the other night and first we waited probably five minutes at the front before anyone noticed we were there and sat us. Then our waitress didn't remember the specials. She described one like this: "It has noodles and some meat...It's kind of like chow mein." Once we ordered, there was at least a 15 minute lag between when the first person and the last person got their food. There was no apology for this! Do they not know that the food for one party should all come out at the same time? If they first two people had waited for the rest of us, their food would have been completely cold. Overall, I think the servers need to act a lot more professional. Also, my order was wrong and instead of cooking my replacement dish properly, the kitchen sent it out with all the veggies still practically raw. I like them nice and crisp, but this was like crudite! I was starving by this point, so I didn't mention it, but I feel like the bad service warranted a free dessert or two... read more
