Very good soups. I got their lemongrass soup and requested it to be spicy - I was so happy I got it. We did delivery and it come on time. As far as the pad thai and the curry, I thought it was okay. The curry was medium spicy and I would say that you couldn't taste the spice at all. Pad thai noodle broke every 2 inches so the consistency isn't that great. I strongly suspect my major reason for liking Thai Orchid is neither a valid or commendable one (because it provides delivery of THAI food from the hood to my doorstep), but given that the choices for delivery to the lower regions of Capitol Hill are limited, at best, I'm enthused by the addition of a restaurant from a remote culinary destination to the Capitol Hill Thai food delivery scene. I'm not sure it supplants Sanphan as my choice selection for Thai delivery, but it certainly provides an acceptable alternative. The cuisine at Thai Orchid most resembles what I have eaten at Urban Thai in Crystal City in that dishes are prepared differently than I would have expected (which, admittedly, might be my own fault). For example, I ordered Crispy Shrimp with Basil and was expecting grilled shrimp drizzled in oil and topped with a combination of Thai hot chili peppers and fried basil. I was quite surprised to find two containers -- one was filled with a dark brown gravy encapsulating red peppers, white onions, and green basil and the other contained large breaded jumbo fried shrimp with fried carrot and fried green beans. Thai Orchid's take wasn't as spicy as I was expecting (I ordered "Thai Hot"), but it was nonetheless satisfying. The other items I ordered included a set of steamed combination meat dumplings and steamed chive dumplings. The meat dumplings were relatively complex for dumplings with even a little bit of bacon-like meat served on top but I actually preferred the chive dumplings without the accompanying dumpling sauce. In any event, neither set of dumplings was so remarkable that I would order them again, but I like that they at least provide them. While I am not completely sold on Thai Orchid yet, I suspect that might change when I try some of the most commond orders (like the green/red curries, drunken noodles, etc.). At this point, if you happen to live in the Capitol Hill South neighborhood, it's worth a visit or a delivery order. Otherwise, I would not necessarily go seek it out on your own volition. read more

3.75 Stars Don't be fooled by the exterior (or the interior, for that matter), this little spot is as good as, if not better, than most Thai places west of the Anacostia river. Aside from the banner out front, the building is little changed from its days as Grandma's Kitchen, a soul-food/breakfast joint that primarily served as a take-out. But on to more important things: the food. The menu here hits all the required notes: Tom yum kung? Check. Larb gai? Check. Penang curry? Check. The chive dumplings were a gussied up version of the rice crepes you often find in dim sum places; you either like the gummy rice crepes or you don't (I do). The shredded green papaya salad with peanuts and bean sprouts had a little too much dressing for my taste, but the pork kaprow with Thai basil and snow peas was suitably spicy and damn fine, as was the spicy eggplant with pork. Presentation is beautiful and service was gracious, if a bit on the slow side. My only quibble is that they could do a bit more with the interior: maybe table clothes and/or vases on the tables to make it a little more attractive. No liquor license, but they do serve tea and Thai iced coffee to accompany your meal. read more

This review is for delivery only. My order came 1.5 hours after I ordered, but I guess that is normal for a Friday night. The calamari appetizer was filed with more fried veggies than calamari, and it was cold. Luckily my main dish was still hot. The delivery guy was very apologetic for the delay in the delivery, which was nice to see that he cared. The Drunken Noodles with Chicken tastes great! Similar to any other Thai food I've had, which is good to see. I was pleasantly surprised to see that using www.delivery.com worked so well. I was safely able to pay using my credit card without worrying about compromising my account by sharing the information over the phone. My girlfriend put me on to Thai Orchid's Kitchen and man I'M HOOKED! The chicken pad see wee is to DIE FOR! I also love their pineapple fried rice (sweet), basil fried rice (spicy), and their drunken noodles. Their spring rolls are tasty and so are their shrimp wraps. Everything Ive had so far has been absolutely delicious. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. This is definitely my go to spot for Thai! The food is always hot, fresh, and well seasoned! Keep in mind, this is mainly a carry out. There is room inside to eat but don't expect anything fancy. I've patronized Thai Orchid's Kitchen a few times and have yet to be disappointed. The food is always fresh, delicious, piping hot, and certainly not greasy like some take out places. The Thai Iced Tea, in a word...YUMMY! Visiting TOK is a win whether you dine in, carry out, or have it delivered. Ordering online is also a convenient option (with a minimum purchase amount). I've eaten at Thai Orchid twice now and gotten delivery once, and must say it's excellent all around. The portion sizes, particularly if you dine in, are Enormous with a capital E. The price is also very reasonable considering that you're getting two meals for the price of one! The delivery portions are slightly more reasonable due to limited container space, but still managed to work for two meals. The spice level is decent which is a nice change of pace. I love this place. Living on the "other side of the water" we don't have many food choices, mostly carry-outs. Thai food is a break from the monotony of chicken wings and fried rice. This tiny place is nestled between a liquor store and a gas station. It doesn't have a fancy sign or flashing light. If you blink you will drive right past it. It actually looks like it should be shut down but I would be soooo unhappy if it did. They are quick, the food is good and the prices are reasonable. Always my quick go to. The curry is tasty but a bit liquidy (I know that's not a word). Can't go wrong with the Siam seafood fried rice or the drunken noodles. I want to try something else but those old faithfuls keep drawing me back to them. Be sure to order online. It will be done by the time you go to pick it up. Calling can be a hassle. This is the second time I have ordered from Thai Orchid's kitchen using the yelp app. Everything on the menu sounds appetizing and the delivery fee is super affordable! Both deliveries arrived at least 20 minutes before they were supposed to. I have only tried the green and red curries and veggie spring rolls but all of the dishes were great. Thai Orchid has become my default spot for dinner--so much so that I should just go ahead and inquire about hiring one of the cooks to set up shop in my apartment. The food is flavorful--lots of fresh basil, yummy coconut milk, nice hot peppers... The owner and staff are very nice (and the owner's son went to Oberlin--go Yeomen!), and are genuinely interested in getting to know their clients. The prices are good (comparable to similar restaurants on the Hill). AND it's one of very few sit-down restaurants east of the [Anacostia] River. Perfect! Well, I decided to venture out and try this place I have been seeing it on GrubHub and there are limited places that deliver to SE DC *blank stare* Nonetheless, I ordered two days in a row THAT's how pleased I was. I ordered Eggplant Basil and Mango Lemonade (Which is DEELISH) I also ordered the fried tofu. Which was okay, It was my first time trying so I truly believe it might be an acquired taste.... The spring rolls are just yummy. And they give you five which is nice. I hate buying them and I get two for 6 dollars and they are mirco-sized... This place is great. Really good food and pretty reasonable prices, Great for a Friday night at home. The second day they gave me some curry puffs for a $1 really GOOD, rich flavor.. A nice little hidden gem. I pass it often but never noticed it. Situated right by L'Enfant Square, not L'Enfant Plaza, really good Thai food on Pennsylvania Ave. SE. The seafood soup was really good. Loved the coconut flavor. Thai iced tea was good, might be too sweet for some. No boba at this spot, unfortunately. I was going to order a Mango Lemonade, I will do that next time. Ginger chicken was my dish, next time I want to try something with peanut sauce. I suppose I'll try Satay for an appetizer. I was impressed by Thai Orchid's ability to honor their promises, as I'm right at the edge of their delivery range. They still managed to bring the food, which was piping hot! No one likes a soggy, limp french fry.. Nope... not a soul... That's a star, right there! I've ordered here a couple of times, but the last time I was really sick (sore throat) and was craving a bowl of hot soup with extra heat. I ordered two soups - tom kha with chicken & veggie tom yum. My favorite was the tom kha (can I call that tom YUM, instead?), because the coconut & lime blended so nicely. Healing & tasty! I've also ordered the fried tofu & curry puffs as appetizers. I'd have to say that I know Thai food leans toward the sweet side, as a compliment to the pepper-laced fire; but, I felt the sauces were a little too sweet (like orange/duck/sweet-n-sour packets) for me. The pad thai (also sweet, and not spicy, at all) & ka prow were pretty standard. The "Thai spicy" wings were pretty good, albeit doused in sauce (nothing a few minutes in the oven wouldn't fix). I like Thai Orchid's for service & convenience. The food is good enough, and this may be the only other local Thai place that I'll patronize. I have been living east of the river since 2005 and have kept my fingers crossed for something as fantastic as this modest restaurant. My first visit, Thai icetea and drunken spagetti w/chicken....very good, both selections. I especially like the concept, "spagetti" because I hate fat noodles...therefore the thinner noodles were perfect. The chicken is grounded, so you feel like you are eating a traditional spagetti dinner, except with Thai flavors. Genius. Absolutely delish. I really like this place. Thai Orchid's Kitchen provides good, hot, tasty food. The delivery is SUPER FAST through the week, and I've never waited more than 45 minutes at any time. (Note that I've only ordered delivery. Never been to the store for dine in or pickup.) Orders and payment can be made online, which is very convenient. Best thing about Thai Orchid is the extra-friendly staff and drivers. It's ok. I didn't really enjoy my delivery from here - it took a verryyyy long time and it was not very flavorful - and this is Thai food, some of the most flavorful food on the planet! I usually love my fellow Yelpers and trust them completely but this place definitely threw me off. My goodness, I'm addicted!!!! I get what I have affectionately coined "the holy trinity" : Pad peanut sauce with chicken, drunken spaghetti, and pineapple fried rice. I think I order this once a week. Definitely at least 3 times a month. they have 4 levels of spice: 1) mild (which is bland thai - who wants that?) 2) medium (this should be what you order everything at, unless you're feeling adventurous. 3) spicy (this is as far as i've gone. Its the perfect spicy, if you ask me. It'll wake up your taste buds without numbing your lips. 4) Very spicy (i'm afraid to try it lol). Be sure to specify what spice level you want, or they will give you mild as a default. The store owner is such a cool guy. he's been in the neighborhood for a long time and he's been loyal to his customers. I have never had a bad customer experience at that store, and when I order with him sometimes it's downright enjoyable. Hint 1: If you try a dish and it doesn't impress you the way you thought it should, try it again but at a higher spice level. I didn't like the panang curry at first, then i tried it again at Medium spice and it was delicious. Same for the pad peanut sauce with chicken. I started ordering from this place last year. We started to order the Drunken chicken and really like it. I order the Pineapple fried rice and my brother had half of my. Next time we order the Pineapple fried rice with curry puffs. It was so yummy. My brother ordered the peanut gravy and grilled chicken. That was so yummy. And the crispy shrimp. I ordered the pad thai and drunken noodles after reading other yelp reviews. It's true the drunken noodle was good, but only in the greasy Asian food at 2am sort of way. The flavors of drunken noodle should be aromatic and floral- these definitely fell flat. The helping was a good size and the delivery time was shorter than they said so those are the Pros. But the food was more like a McDonalds making thai food than an actual Thai restaurant. As for the Pad Thai- don't get it. The noodles were dry, it tasted like paper with Elmer's glue smeared on it, even the color (kind of neon orange) was unappealing. Yes, it's out of the way for those who live west of the Capitol. Indeed, you're likely to get hassled by homeless folks. And if you're lucky, when you park your car in the alleyway next to the restaurant, a prostitute may be bobbing head on some dude in his car. (True story) But don't let that scare you from giving Thai Orchid's Kitchen a try. I've gotten take-out from here several times as it is a fairly quick drive down 295 for me. You get massive portions of damn good Thai food for a reasonable price, it's hard to resist. Items I've enjoyed.... Seafood salad, which is legit eye-watering spicy, probably one of the top 5 spiciest dishes I've had in DC. Papaya salad, a refreshing interlude. Curry puffs, one of my favourite Thai snacks. Regarding entrees, the kaprow and panang curry are excellent, but I'm a big fan of the "specials" which mostly consist of some kind of deep-fried protein (chicken or fish) and a wonderfully spicy and fragrant Thai-chili sauce. Just make sure if you get this for take-out, to crack open the containers so your food stays crispy until you get home. I've been ordering from Thai Orchid for about three years now, and 90% of the time the food is delicious and fresh. I don't eat in, I get delivery. Sometimes delivery can take a pretty long time (like a full hour) but it's worth the wait if you don't wan't to go pick up the food, and the drivers are always courteous and professional. Besides, if you live east of the river, you sadly don't have a choice to get faster delivery from another good thai restaurant. It also seems a bit pricey, and I can't help but wonder whether they're taking advantage of the lack of choice. That said, even if I had other options for Thai delivery (which I don't) I would probably still order from Thai Orchid. It really is that good. I recommend the red roast pork fried rice, basil fried rice or pineapple fried rice (I'm a rice fan), tofu with mixed vegetables or garlic sauce, peanut beef, and any of the appetizers or fried items. My kids like the pad thai about I'm not a huge fan of those items and agree with some of the other reviewers that there is better pad thai out there and that it's kid of bland. My mom loves the tilapia basil, which is a fried tilapia tossed in some sort of spicy sweet and sour sauce. read more

I can only speak for the take-out, but it is always ready when I arrive and the staff is super friendly. If you are unsure how spicy you like your food then don't worry, they will make it mild and give you spice on the side. FINALLY FINALLY found a decent thai place that delivers in DC. They allow ordering online, delivery, and you can pay with your credit card (and even tip on it if you want!) which is super convenient. The food got here in 45 min (exactly when they said it would even though I'm on the outer border of their delivery zone). Also, all of it was delicious.
