I have been to Thai Pepper a couple of times. Times before were OK experiences, however this last one was an all time low in dining experiences. We went there on a Thursday night, no one else was in the restaurant. The waiter was extremely unfriendly and short. We ordered the Papaya salad and the peanut chicken. When the papaya salad came out of the kitchen it was undoubtedly the worst smelling food I have ever ordered. I think the cook must have spilled an excessive amount of fish oil on the salad. It tasted as bad as it smelled, so of course I was unable to eat it. Not once did the waiter ask if there was anything wrong with the salad, since it obviously was not being touched. Frankly I don't know how he was able to bring the plate out to the table without passing out from the pungent fumes. Next the peanut chicken was served. The sauce tasted ok, however it was filled with fatty pieces of chicken. Shortly after dinner my stomach was not happy with my dinning choice. Needless to say I do NOT recommend this place, and will not be returning...which is too bad considering how much I love thai food. I've also tried Rama, not too bad, ok food, very slow service. Thai Pepper has reopened and is as good as it used to be. The new owners are great and the food is wonderful

The buffet is absolutely stellar. The service is good, though the atmosphere is reminiscent of a bbq joint (lots of wood paneling). Nothing can top the food. The selection is limited, but good and the lemongrass soup is exceptional. Their desserts have dipped a little since they reopened, but then I don't go there for the desserts! Wow! I used to love stopping by Thai Pepper! I taught Larry at Scotlandville and this was the best Thai I've eaten, hands down. So, since i had a craving for some Pad Thai, and wontons, and it had been a year since I been back to BR, let's stop by... Atmosphere, not the same, ok decorations are still here, no tv....rats!! The food items actually taste pretty good in my opinion, though some items are more soupy than I thought, but they still taste good. Also items are clearly labeled and specify how spicy they are. Despite them being clearly labeled, some customers may not pay attention and may get a bit of a surprise such as a spice punch in the mouth and nose (unfortunately one was a guest of mine who ate and ended up with the result of a runny nose...eww... not the restaurants fault, but people please pay attention to the labels; they are there for a reason....).Overall the food was very good, just be careful on what you choose and READ. LOL! I also like that they have a variety of items that aren't limited to just meat and we can get some vegetables in. I actually went back to the buffet three times and tried not to go back and save some food for the rest of the guest, but oh well, at least I was enjoying myself and the food. The price was very reasonable. A party of two can eat at the buffet for about $25, but we ordered the thai tea, so if you don't drink thai tea, the price could be less. read more

I will start off by saying that you shouldn't go here expecting the most authentic Thai you've ever had (I mean really, it's on Florida Blvd in Baton Rouge). But if you are looking for an inexpensive, tasty meal, they are worth a visit. We visit quite often because it has the feel of a neighborhood restaurant despite the busy street and the food is consistenty good. I've gone there for buffet lunch multiple times and that's when they seem to be busiest. Cinnamon pork is good but watch for bones (first time I tries it I did not realize the pork wasn't boneless)! Can't remember the names of the other things but it's buffet so try it all! For dinner, I usually get one of the curries. I don't find their Pad Thai all that memorable which is dissapointing because I love Pad Thai...it's not bad just not as flavorful as I would like. It's usually empty at night but we kind of like that as it makes for a cozy atmosphere. Staff recognize us now and are always quite friendly. Oh one last tip, when you order, you specify your preferred level of spiciness, but be careful, I find anything above medium is too spicy for me! Ok this was bad. I mean like "Did I make someone angry" bad. Was it the New York plates on the rental car? I'll never know but this was shockingly bad. Spring rolls were fresh, but there must have been a shortage of veggies because these were very single minded. The sweet sauce was unique and good though. Tom Yum soup was flavorful, but I've never seen any that looked like this (brown), and again, other than mushrooms and a couple of shrimp, there were none of the vegetables and spices that make this soup so good. It was also so highly spiced (hot) - and I like it spicy - that I had to wait for the temp to cool down to be able to eat it (I heard another table return their food for the same reason). The Pad Woo Sen was nothing more than a big glop of noodles thrown on top of a handful of raw to barely cooked vegetables with a few pieces of rubbery and stale tasting tofu. Not a hint of spice or flavor. Not mixed together, not tossed, nothing. Everything came out at once too. It can't possibly be this bad all the time. This is the closest approximation in BR we've found to the authentic (spicy) Thai food we're used to from the West Coast. We enjoyed the red curry and 'Thai Chile' (tofu/vegetables in a chile/basil sauce) --we ordered them both very spicy ("Thai spicy, not American spicy"), and that's exactly what we got. The flavor of the 'Thai Chile' dish was especially good. The prices are reasonable, and the manager is friendly. We'll be going back. (This place is WAY better than Thai Kitchen, which we thought was awful.) read more

I ordered take out from Thai Pepper since I was craving Thai. I saw the reviews and it was close to my house so I figured I'd give it a try. Not only was the food we ordered SO delicious, but the lady who helped us was very friendly. While we were there, she told us about the lunch buffet. I go at least once a month now and have brought several of my friends there. Great selection (lots of vegetarian options), great value considering the quality of the ingredients and the home-cooked taste, and quick service for those that need a quick lunch. Definitely try the black rice pudding, topped with sweetened creamed coconut. The cinnamon pork is another one of my favorites that I was hesitant to try, but so glad that I did. read more

I had this restaurant recommended by a friend and I definitely owe them a beer in thanks because this was the best dining experience I've had in a long time. As a server myself, I'm always disappointed when I receive bad service but that was definitely not an issue here. The service was amazing, the food was amazing, and the prices were incredibly reasonable for the quality of food we received. The best Thai food in BR. Better than Thai Kitchen. I have been a few times and the food is always fresh and delicious! I prefer to order off the menu instead of the lunch buffet but it was still good. I like the basil chicken while my husband always orders the ginger beef. The food is great! It is always freshly prepared, vegetables are cooked just right. All the food taste good; cooked like it came from your Mom's kitchen even if you are not Thai. We love this place! The impression given by every food here is of freshness. The menu variety is good, too--many dishes are available meatless or with a choice of meat or seafood. The lunch buffet also has incredible variety; and, it is available on Saturdays in addition to weekdays, so it is a great way to do Saturday brunch. Real taste! I missed the Coconut soup I tried in Hongkong years ago. I was suppressed by the original taste of coconut soup in Thai Pepper. It is soooooooo Good! The environment is very oriental,. exotic, and clean. I love to go there for lunch buffet, since the price is inexpensive at all, and you can even try more than 10 dishes, soup and deserts. There special desert is very delicious, it has some special fruit in there. The owner says you can't find it in US. Over all this place will be my favorite. read more

First of all I am a long time customer of Thai Pepper. I started eating here 3 times a week about 8 years ago since the previous owner. The last few years the food didn't taste quite the same and the quality has come down quite a bit. The ingredients were not fresh and the curry didn't taste the same any more so I had stopped coming for the last several months. Last month I heard from my friend that the previous owner has come back and run the business again so I came and tried their food. Oh, Wow, this is actually THAI FOOD. The curry tastes so good even though they do not use any MSG at all in their food and I have learned that they make their own curry paste. They are in the process of getting things together so it might be a little slow for the food to come out for dinner but their lunch is wonderful, a lot variety of food specially for veggie lover. Half of their lunch buffet are vegetarian dishes. Their food is a little spicier than before but Thai Food is supposed to be like that. Go and try Thai Pepper again, you will not be disappointed. read more
