This is an incredible deal for ~$9. The first time I went it was so delicious I couldn't stop thinking about the food for days afterwards. I don't eat much meat and was delighted that there were plenty of options for me and many of them were spicy too. Yay! I'd been meaning to try Thai Pepper for a while, and finally made it out there yesterday. I tried the lunch buffet, which has a pretty nice spread, both of some of my favorite items and some I had never had before. I tried a good bit of what they had to offer, and here are my findings: The first thing I tried was the grilled chicken. A bit dry, but with a decent lightly seasoned flavor. Next up, their basil chicken. Though not my favorite, I usually like basil chicken. Not here though - the sauce was flavorless and I didn't see any basil in the dish at all. Fail. I moved on the the ginger pork. Now shit was starting to get good. A little spicy with a nice ginger flavor, this pork was spot on. The chicken in peanut sauce was decent as well - not the best I've had, but definitely good. Then I tried the fried calamari. Or rather, I didn't. I bit into it, and immediately realized that the calamari was pretty much rancid. It wasn't that soul-wrenching stomach emptying full blown rancid, but it was on the cusp and I immediately spat it out. That was definitely minus a star right there. Regaining my composure, I tried the spicy beef salad. Now this was good... probably my third favorite thing I tried there. Not very spicy at all, but I loved the flavor. I could see me ordering this as a dish by itself. Next I tried the fried fish with coconut sauce, and that shit was fan-fucking-tastic. I mean absolutely spot on. My second favorite thing I tried there. Next I took a nibble into their less-than-desirable fried wonton, and promptly tossed it aside. They had some pad thai out, and hell everybody loves pad thai so I got me some. It was acceptable - not great, but not bad. Just missing something that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Next to this were some "blazing shrimp" that were anything but. Despite this, they were some decent mildly seasoned sauteed shrimp, and I mixed them into my pad thai, slightly improving both of the dishes. They had a couple of curries that were ok, but unnoteworthy. They had spicy eggplant, which wasn't too bad, but the spicy tofu was even better. Then I tried the absolutely worst thing they had to offer - "som tum" aka papaya salad. At first it smelled a bit off, kinda like wet dog, but I let that slide thinking maybe it was one of those things that smells terrible but tastes great, kinda like a good cheese. Nuh uh. I sunk my teeth into a bite of this shredded vegetable slaw, and instantly had more regret for that action than any other regrettable action of my life. The best way that I can think to describe this flavor - now keep in mind this description doesn't quite do it justice - but the best way to describe this flavor is if I were to have gone out and found a mangy, filthy, flea-infested near death stray dog, and brought it home with me. Then when it started raining, I stuck said dog out in the rain for about 20 minutes to get it nice and wet and juicy. Then, upon letting said dog in, I proceeded to nibble succulently on and about the fleshier portions of it's inner ears. That, in a nutshell, describes the flavor of this papaya salad. Yuckers. Next I tried a little rice paper wrapped roll they deemed a "fresh roll". It was about the texture of a gummy bear, but with no flavor to speak of. The coconut soup wasn't bad, but the lemongrass one was a pretty piss poor excuse for a soup. Now I've saved for last my absolute favorite item I ate there - the pad woon sen. I had never had this dish before, but dear god thai pepper may have turned me onto my new favorite thai dish. Those delicious little noodles were about the spiciest thing on the buffet and I just couldn't get enough of them. For dessert, I had a bowl of the sweet glutinous black rice, which was pretty good. As my first time here, I just got a little nibble of each of the items to feel it out and decide what I liked (except the pad woon sen, which I had to get a nice serving of after having tried it). If I were to go back, my plate would likely consist of mostly pad woon sen, with some spicy beef salad and plenty of fried fish with coconut sauce. I would possibly also have some chicken with peanut sauce and some spicy tofu, and finish it off with another bowl of black rice. So overall, thai pepper was a decent experience. It has about the quality you would expect for a buffet, but obviously doesn't come anywhere close to a place like duang tawan. I think I will be seeking out another place that has pad woon sen on the menu and trying it again soon. My major complaints here are the nigh-rotten calamari and the wretched satan spawn known as som tum, for which I had to take the rating down a bit. However, if one were to avoid these particular dishes, they may have quite the nice dining experience. read more

My favorite Thai food in Baton Rouge. A quiet place for an outstanding dinner at an unbeatable price. Thai Pepper prides themselves on using all fresh ingredients, fresh herbs, and very little oil. I have never had less than perfection in any dish when ordering from their menu. I would avoid the lunch rush and buffet unless you're into that. I echo everything the previous reviewer said. A wonderful family owned place, you can tell because the staff hasn't changed in years and sometimes their kids run around! Don't expect a fancy experience, just expect a cozy old building, incredibly friendly service, cheap prices and delicious food. If you're visiting Baton Rouge, I'd recommend having locals bring you there, as it is quite out of the way, especially if you're staying near LSU. But if you're a Baton Rouge resident who loves Thai food, claims that Thai Kitchen is the best in BR, and isn't going to complain about driving to Florida street- you MUST go to Thai Pepper. One of the best and worst things about this place is that at dinner there are only two or three tables there at a time. Good because you can carry on conversation and get excellent attention from the server. Bad because you worry that they aren't getting enough business and may not be open the next time you show up for dinner. Like the previous poster said, they're always packed at lunch, so I try not to worry. But, to be safe, I recommend it to folks whenever I can! read more

The old management is back, and the place is top notch Thai once again! It's the best Thai food just about anywhere I've eaten. OK, it is the best. Favorites of mine are: the lemongrass soup (distinct and excellent with chicken or shrimp), the spring rolls (fried) with the sweet and spicy sauce, beef and lettuce salad (only on Saturday lunches?), catfish with the awesome sauce, and several curries. Go to the buffet early to get a taste of everything freshly cooked. They grow their own herbs out back, so everything is very fresh and it comes through in the flavor. If you go after hours, you can ask for the spice rack to increase the hotness on anything... but it's normally not needed for us Americans. read more

The staff is friendly, the atmosphere cozy, and the price unbeatable (for a lunch buffet). It's not far from where I work, so I can pop over and be back to work well within an hour. Some of the best Thai food we have ever had. We visited on a Monday night. When we walked in there was only one other person dining in and were worried but not for long. The door should have been revolving from all of the take out orders. We ordered egg rolls which came out fast and hot. Very yummy! Also we got panang curry and chicken pad thai. The spice was just right! Both excellent dishes. With those three items we still got out under $30. The restaurant is clean and easy to find. Not fancy at all but nicely decorated. They have a lunch buffet that changes throughout the week. We will definitely be back as soon as we are in town again. read more

I have been eating here for over 13 years. Never had a bad meal. Mostly eat the lunch buffet but I eat dinner from time to time. Buffet has a good selection with some rotating from day to day. Always freshly made and kept well stocked. If you're a fan of Thai food I recommend you give it a try. As a result, wanted a to go tea, and informed they canceled to go cups. I had witnessed them just giving a to go cup to an Asian who ordered it. Didn't know what to expect after reading mixed reviews...with the good ones apparently referring to a different incarnation of the place. But since I had a groupon, didn't want to cook and had an hour to kill while waiting for traffic to die down before driving to NOLA...I gave it a shot. I'm SOOOO glad I did. The service was warm and attentive without being intrusive...though i was there right at opening time for dinner so was the only one there. I got chicken larb and papaya salad both extra spicy and a Thai iced coffee. Now I don't know if it's because I look like I can handle heat, but both dishes were fiery hot...pushing my limit hot! (And that's saying a lot considering I will put fresh habanero in my salsa fresca and guacamole!) But they were both really good! The papaya salad was leaning more toward Laotian style with the addition of tomatoes the darker stronger dressing (again maybe because I am Asian they might have tailored their cooking to the recipient? Which I absolutely appreciate! :)) because of the heat and the stronger sauce/dressing on the salad, I did end up ordering steamed rice to eat with these dishes...which resulted in my taking half of each dish home for lunch the following day! Total bill was $21 (for two meals!) but since I had the groupon it cost me $5 plus the $5 I tipped the super adorable older waiter. I have been to Thai Pepper a couple of times. Times before were OK experiences, however this last one was an all time low in dining experiences. We went there on a Thursday night, no one else was in the restaurant. The waiter was extremely unfriendly and short. We ordered the Papaya salad and the peanut chicken. When the papaya salad came out of the kitchen it was undoubtedly the worst smelling food I have ever ordered. I think the cook must have spilled an excessive amount of fish oil on the salad. It tasted as bad as it smelled, so of course I was unable to eat it. Not once did the waiter ask if there was anything wrong with the salad, since it obviously was not being touched. Frankly I don't know how he was able to bring the plate out to the table without passing out from the pungent fumes. Next the peanut chicken was served. The sauce tasted ok, however it was filled with fatty pieces of chicken. Shortly after dinner my stomach was not happy with my dinning choice. Needless to say I do NOT recommend this place, and will not be returning...which is too bad considering how much I love thai food. I've also tried Rama, not too bad, ok food, very slow service.
