I have been coming here on a frequent basis as this is a restaurant that works with Rotary Club and attempts to meets our requests. The staff seem to manage the large number of people in our group (typically 10-15), the service is good, the price is average for Thai, the food is pretty good, and there is a wide variety to choose from. I typically like to make my orders pretty spicy on the scale and they do try to spice it up a bit, which is appreciated. I came here with 4 other people on a Wednesday evening around 5:30pm. There was no wait and we were seated right away. The interior is nice. The day we came, they had a special for BOGO free Thai Iced Tea and $6.99 crab pad thai. (fake crab) The specials are a very decent price. However, I ordered the BBQ chicken with rice. After 15 minutes, the waitress came over and told me they were "out of chicken". They gave me a room temperature chicken leg and 2 ribs instead. My husband's meal also tasted like it had been sitting out all day. Not fresh tasting at all or even that hot. It kind of left me wondering how long ago the food was cooked..... The pad thai was decent, however. This was my first time dining here, and although the decor was nice.... I've definitely had better food at other Thai restaurants.... and more authentic tasting. Koi see mee noodle could have been much better. Its seemed like a flavorless mount of noodles that lacked spices and so called gravy was more like a watery broth also lacking flavor. I did enjoy my young coconut juice and the service was nice although a large group got more attention than our table of 2 did. Pad Thai Tuesdays: $4 for a huge portion, nice. Most of these reviews are more or less in regards to that promotion, but if you come here on a normal day the service is significantly better. The pad thai isn't bad but it is probably the weakest link on the menu. They have some sort of raw shrimp thing (can't remember what it was called) that is pretty much awesome sauce. I have gave this place many chances esp after the pandemic. Don't get me wrong before pandemic they were a lot better. However, I guess they don't really care about reviews to even make a change. this is a good local thai spot located off Main Street - so on weekends it can get pretty crowded after 7pm - they have great thai ice tea, and good pad thai - the soups were all amazing.. make sure you ask about the heat factor when you order soups if you don't want them to be too hot.. the service was lack luster, but i got the feeling it is family run and that everyone who works there is either family or close to it... they kept forgetting stuff, but always apologized for the wait.. All in all the price was in line with the experience, and the food was good. I liked the local feel and casual atmosphere for a kick back kinda night.. and the fried banana was amazing too.. As many others have already alluded to in their reviews, Thai Purple is really only decent for one thing--Pad Thai Tuesdays. The Pad Thai with chicken is $3.99 on Tuesday and is a steal--if you're into mediocre versions of this Thai classic. They will give you a container-full of food, and it will last you two meals (most likely), but it's really not that appetizing. Maybe if I were more hammered I'd like this more. read more

The soup of the day was a small bowl of clear broth cabbage and tomato mixed with tofu. I'd called this budget soup! The Thai BBQ chicken was a curried chicken and it was pretty tasty! My favorite from the special. The pepper chicken had a thin brothy sauce it was served with that made it go well with the rice but it didn't make any special lasting impression. Also, parking convenient. There's a free structure on 1st & Main and street parking is usually fairly easy. Cons: Service is really hit or miss. Sometimes the servers are attentive, sometimes it takes forever to find someone (and sometimes they're really sassy, and verging on impolite). I really like Asian food especially Thai food that is spicy, sweet and sour. I had the Thai ice tea that was sweet with the appetizer satay beef with peanut dipping sauce that was so delicious I almost wanted to order another one. Also I had the pad thai and pineapple curry. These are some of my favorites. Curry sauce was a little watery when I prefer the sauce to be a little thicker then still delicious. I ordered a lot of food so I had a little of everything and really got full. The entree portions are good sizes for 2 people to share if you order off the regular menu. The lunch specials are good for one person for a light lunch. Parking is only in a garage when its located in Downtown Alhambra so you will have to walk to this restaurant when its across the street from the movie theater. Eat and catch a movie or the other way around. Restaurant is clean and decorated beautiful in a cultural Thai style. I recommend this place. Solid Thai restaurant located in Alhambra. They have a great lunch combo deal that comes with soup and a Thai Tea. My friends and I usually come after church and they are able to accommodate our extremely large parties (13+ people). I've tried their Green Curry and Chicken Pad Thai. The curry doesn't come with rice so you do have to order that as a side which does make it more expensive as a meal but if you have a smaller appetite you can get 2-3 meals out of the portion size. The Chicken Pad Thai is standard (you get 2 shrimp with it so beware if you have a shellfish allergy. I got 3 meals out of the portion size but that's just me. My bf can usually get 2 meals out of it. Service can be a little weird. Sometimes there are many servers in the dining area and sometimes they just all disappear to the back for a while. Besides that, Purple Thai is an okay Thai restaurant. Idk if I would go out of my way to eat here (probably not) but since i'm in the area so often, I come here every once in a while. read more

This review is solely based on the pad thai here. I've been coming here since high school to have their delicious pad thai on pad thai Tuesdays. I would go weekly to the point where I compare all pad thais to theirs because I'm so used to the flavors and texture of their pad thai. They always give a good amount and don't skimp on the sauce. Its around $5 for a full dish on Tuesdays and now that I'm away in school, I find myself wishing I could get cheap and delicious pad thai on Tuesdays. Not a fan. Tom Yum soup is pretty stange and sloppy. ..raw ginger chunks, unchopped cilantro, and chicken with bone still attached. Mango Slush taste like plastic, heavily processed. Multiple servers have language barrier issues. In addition they forgot our wontons, which we had to reorder. Floor was sticky (not clean) and the fish tank looked really old and filthy with only a few tiny fish still alive...gross. While we did have to reorder them, the cheese wontons were good. My family and I used to come here all the time many, many, many years ago. But we suddenly stopped for no reason at all. I don't think it had anything to do with the food because it was good enough for us to keep coming back. In my hunt for cheap lunches, I finally returned to try their $3.99 Pad Thai Tuesday special. $3.99 REALLY is a steal for the amount of food you get. It'll fill anyone up, I guarantee it. Flavor-wise, it tastes like Pad Thai to me! Sweet, yet tangy. Very good. But I think a VERY important factor to a superb Pad Thai is the texture aka "bite" of the noodles. This place uses a thicker rice noodle, resulting in a mushy texture. I just prefer the really thin rice noodles which gives you more of a sticky, chewy Pad Thai versus a soft one. I love their lunch special. You get a bowl of good soup (light and perfect for a stomach pre-game), and your lots-of-food lunch box dish and a free drink. I usually get the red curry, fried pork riblets, and pork salad stuff. I love the pork salad option because it has pieces of pork that are fried until they resemble croutons. Really brilliant stuff. Their red curry is good. You have the option of getting it with tofu, chicken, beef or pork. I usually get chicken because I figure that much pork in one sitting is pretty horrible. So what I get ends up being terrific! Their thai iced tea is good. Really sweet and strong. I like that. The decor is pretty fabulous. It's all purple and gold and really nice. The seating is good though. The place has good lighting. Bright enough to really see your food but not so bright that you always have to shift in your seat to avoid the sun destroying your eyes. The reason I didn't give it five stars is I went there at night the other night and it was not as good of a deal. The food is normal priced, which isn't badly priced, but there is no soup and no free drink. It's still good, mind you. Just not cheap enough to count as a good cheap place within my student budget. I got the spare ribs and fried rice. The fried rice was amazing. It had piece of chicken and the perfect amount of spice. I really enjoyed it with the sweet chilli sauce I think they give you to dip the spare ribs in. But it made the rice stick together well and have good strong kick. The spare ribs were good. They were like of chau siu-y. Like, the Cantonese pork that is red and scrumptious. Anyways, it was really good. A bit on the fatty sided, but I like it that way. I don't like the parking, but I always use their double parking. It is this tiny lot surrounded by all valet parking. So either you have to valet park (a sign in the bathroom says if you order more than $30 then you can have free valet parking) or you have to park kind of terribly. The dinner portions were big!! Ii believe I could have finished it if I didn't fill up on tacos a few hours earlier. Good place. I always come back. The food is always fresh and good and the prices are great (at lunch) as well! It's fried, spicy, and, well, yummy. Red curry with pork is a good amount of spicy and tasty, but you have to pay extra for rice. I noticed some people commented on their pad thai being inconsistent colors of brown/orange? I would suggest they be nicer to their servers, because I've gone there for the past 6 years and the pad thai is always the same color and never ceases to please. To be fair this isn't authentic Thai food, but locating authentic anything in the United States is a needle in a haystack. That being said, they do offer some great dishes. You say 'curry' and I come running! Shrimp in red curry was pretty tasty. It had medium heat and I felt the sweat forming on my brow. It was a good choice of level. My dad gets the shrimp pad Thai, my son got fried tofu (child portion was pretty big), and my boyfriend got orange chicken. Everything was appealing to the eye and satisfying to the taste. On another occasion, my father, my son, and I came in for lunch. I was surprised to see they had pretty good valued lunch specials. My dad and I had shrimp and broccoli. This came with a cup of vegetable soup, salad, rice, egg rolls, and the main entrée. Nice! Got my son upset I was the food came before the appetizer. My son let them have it so we left. My son did order a Thai tea and he wanted to pay for it . The waiter I talked to the manager then came back and said the drink was on the house . Oh brother $3.40 or whatever the price my son was still uoset. I have been coming here for years and it's sad what happened to this business. They have bad employee turnover I think the owner is not the most pleasant person to work for. Came in today to get some Thai food. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they do have a lunch or "combo set" special. The special includes your choice of a selective entree, appetizer, and drink all for $8.99. It was a good deal and they have the special going all the way until 5pm everyday. So, I had to try out the special. I got orange children, Thai pork rib, and thai coffee. I wanted boba or lychee jelly but the waitress said they were out. I also wanted to order chicken satay but they were out of that as well. However, after we get our drinks, 15 minutes later I see that another group had drinks with boba. I was really confused and upset to see that. I asked the waitress about it and she said that they weren't out but making more. It didn't sound right to me. Literally, the waitress lied when I was ordering. I take customer service seriously. I felt that there was no reason to lie about the boba. I'm a chill person. I would have been OK with the truth. However, this visit, they were lacking in good customer service and I don't know if I would want to go back again after this. So, be prepared to have to keep flagging the waitress down again and again to get service. They won't come to your table to ask how everything is going. Lastly, my meal was good. It would be my family's go-to Thai place (that's before we discovered Thai Paradise's larger selection and brighter interior). As a kid, I loved that their plates were purple! Just like their name :) All the food is pretty standard. This is coming from a girl that douses everything in the chili sauce, so I guess every pad see ew would be standard when you can only taste the spice. I would definitely recommend coming here for their lunch specials, as they come with soup or salad. If I recall correctly, the salad dressing is a sweet vinegary dressing, which is pretty interesting! The wait staff is really nice here. Parking isn't a problem (they share a lot with the block of restaurants). It's conveniently located across the street from a movie theatre. Dinner and a movie perhaps?
