I TRIED - Tom Yum (9/10) - Penang Curry (9/10) - Pad Kee Mao (9/10) Celebrating a birthday, we were planning to go to Pho Dung Gia, just a few doors down, but found out that they closed at 4 on Sundays. Well, our group of 13 walked there from a friend's house, so we didn't want to turn back. It was either Japanese or Thai, but since Thai was closer, that was our choice! It's a small place. The 13 of us combined 4 or 5 tables together, which was about 2/3 of the place. The service is very accommodating. The sister of the birthday girl baked some cakes and bought ice cream, and they happily refrigerated it for us while we ate. They also provided bowls and spoons when it was time for dessert. TOM YUM This was probably the best Tom Yum I've ever had in terms of flavor, but, maybe it was an execution thing, I ordered Extra Spicy, and it only had a small kick. The sourness was so beautifully balanced. It pushed the sour limits as far as possible to gather all the flavors, but without being overbearing. It was a risky move, but damn did they get it right! Also, different places have different levels of "land mines" as I like to call it, which are ingredients that are there for flavoring, but are not to be eaten. For example, I find a lot of ginger, and some inedible vegetable skins sometimes that I'm picking out of my mouth, but the only complain I had here are that the onion slices were bigger than I had seen before, and although not landmines, affected my texture a bit. But if only it was a sweat inducing spice like I asked for, this may have been the holy grail Tom Yum I've been looking for! PENANG CURRY My other dish to rate a Thai place...First thing I noticed about my friend's Red curry was that it was really watery. I was hoping it was an execution mistake, but unfortunately, mine came out just as watery. I'm really not a fan of that, but oh well. But here's the thing. The flavor of this Penang was on par with Dan Thai in Schaumburg, IL. The one thing that they did, that I just thought was not possible because of the coconut milk, was that they got the "Extra Spicy" PERFECT! It was a magnificent burn! Sweat inducing, mouth watering...oh my god, was it perfect! It was so good, I was almost forgetting about the wateryness...almost. Also, sometimes, when I order extra spicy, it's not this spicy, but you can almost explicitly taste the extra peppers that they put in, and it affects the flavor some. Nope, not here! I don't know how, but they managed to mask the taste of the extra peppers, but delivering an awesome heat! Portion was perfect too! Also, what's nice, is that it didn't have a lot of the previously mentioned "land mines." That makes this some excellent comfort food! Filling, sweat inducing, and no need to dodge land mines. I love it! PAD KEE MAO I've never had this before, but I just had a taste of my friend's. I love Pad See Ew, so the wide rice noodles were very welcome. She also ordered it "Extra Spicy," and I was really impressed with how well they got the spicy to linger on every single noodle! The chicken may have been a tiny bit dry, but the extra spice made your mouth water to cover that anyway! The seasoning could have had a tiny dash extra, but it was fine as it was. I'm still just so impressed with how well they did Extra Spicy on this one. It wasn't a flavored spice, though. It was a stealth spice. You'd eat noodle and chicken and wonder why your mouth was burning. You never tasted the spice, it just happened. AND? In terms of Thai food and spice, this is a restaurant "after my own heart." They perfected the spice on both the Penang Curry and the Pad Kee Mao, but I don't know why they didn't get it right on the Tom Yum. My favorite thing about this place, and maybe it makes it not so authentic, but I don't care, is that in all the dishes, there weren't "land mines." I have to spend too many brain cells at some restaurants fishing out leaves, chili peppers, ginger, and the like, that it takes away from the experience. I like that I can sit down, order food, sweat, and leave happy. Great job guys! Oh, and the next time I'm in the area, it's going to be hard deciding between Pho Dung Gia, and Thai Square! read more

I travel around the country for my job and have eaten at some great restaurants and some not so great restaurants. However, the food at Thai Square is horrible. I ordered the Spring Rolls. There were not made with rice paper and were extremely dry. Additionally, I ordered the Broccoli Oyster Sauce. The sauce was thin and watery and lacked the spiciness I requested. After not being here in years, my friend and I decided to try it. I figured that it had been a few years and maybe things had changed. What a mistake this place was again! The food was gross, tasted microwaved, and cold. We had a noodle dish that was downright disgusting! I mean we are talking so gross that I was debating if my dogs were worthy of it (they weren't because they eat well.). Not only this but the service was atrocious. I had the beef salad and the vegetable tom yum soup. The beef salad was very underwhelming. Lackluster and not very flavorful. The beef was dry and a bit tough. Ok, so we have basically given up on trying new Thai places, because for the most part they are cookie cutter places that serve bland 'chinese' style food. There are no authentic ingredients to be found, and you cannot tell what Asian country your dish is supposed to be from. So my hoper were not high when we passed by Thai Square one evening. But since i was so hungry, and feeling adventurous, i decided why not, lets roll em and see what happens. The place is pretty small, with nice decor, nothing special or fancy. Fine with me, as i would prefer to eat sitting on a milk crate with a cardboard box as my table if the food was good. It did take a little bit for the waitress to come out, but she apologized quickly. They look to be doing a good takeout business. For food we ordered: Chicken tom yum - Average/good. Not great, as it was a bit sweet for the both of us, and lacked any fresh lemongrass or cilantro. Decent sized bowl though. Egg rolls - These were pretty good. Nice and crispy, with the ultra thin wrapper. But then again egg rolls in thai places are almost always a sure winner. evil jungle curry - I am not sure what makes this different from their regular jungle curry, but flavor wise it was pretty good. The main problem with this dish though was that it was served with thin pad thai noodles in it. This presented an eating problem as the curry was very soupy, and it made eating the noodles very hard. pad khee mao - This was the dish that i ordered. It was tasty, with plenty of flavor. I had asked for it extra spicy, and as usual it was not very hot at all. But no big deal, because we asked for hot peppers and that included a ground up pepper powder which WAS hot, so after sprinking that all over the dish i was happy with the heat level. The vegetables were cooked nicely, with a bit of crunch still there, which was a nice contrast to the soft noodles. We both decided we would come back and try other things, as our first encounter warrants giving it another go, whereas most places get crossed off the return again list. read more

I have eaten a ton of Thai food, as my children's father was Thai, and we went to dozens of Thai restaurants together - This is hands down THE WORST Thai food I have ever eaten in my life - The crab rangoon was SO gross - the middle was runny and had NO crab taste at all - it was bland and tasted like nothing - I am pretty sure that this is what I had a bad allergic reaction to within hours of eating it - I have a rash all over my neck - but who knows what disgusting food from here was the culprit - maybe cross contamination on the cucumbers, since I am the only one who ate them and I am the only one with an ailment - I also ate spring rolls - the tofu was mushy and gross - the curry fried rice did not taste like any curry fried rice I have ever had - Just bad - chicken satay is one of my favorites - have never had bad satay until I came here - usually it is tender, but not here - tough and chewy with bad peanut sauce - WORST peanut sauce I have ever had - the only thing that tasted ok were the pot stickers - Do NOT waste your hard earned money here - sure wish I would have thought to look at the reviews before I brought this nasty food home to my family. Whoever says this food is good or they have eaten here for years has never eaten delicious Thai before and should try REAL Thai food - they would never come back here again - I certainly won't. read more

Im visiting the area and really wanted Thai in my hotel room, after calling several places, Thai Square delivered!! It took a few minutes for my bf to explain to the man on the other end of the phone that we were staying in a hotel and that we don't live here. After that initial confusion they had all the food we wanted to get (we had to guess, there was no menu in the phonebook). The food came before they had said it was, so that was a plus. The food looked nothing like I expected, the spring rolls looked like sushi rolls but were so delicious. I also had the sweet and sour chicken and it was great as well. A little soupy, but just dip the rice in it and it's great. My boyfriend got the yellow curry with beef, it was supposed to be really spicy but it wasn't as spicy as he likes his food. That happens a lot at other Asian restaurants though, it's never spicy enough for him. Overall, it was great food at a great price and they delivered to us right to our hotel room door! read more

If I've had a bad experience at a restaurant, I give them the benefit of the doubt, knowing that everyone has a bad day. But this was so bad, I probably won't be back. We ordered two dishes for take out: Pad Thai and Orange Chicken. The Pad Thai was bland - very little flavor - and the noodles tasted burned. The Orange Chicken looked like they took chicken nuggets from Sam's Club and threw a little sauce on them. It was awful. We usually get take-away. Everything we've ordered has always been good here. As one reader did state some of the food is a little bland but still good. My big complaint is that for years, upon my request, they used to prepare my lard nar thick rice noodles crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside but suddenly, one day, they claimed they "can't" do it anymore and now they refuse every time I ask. At times I'm usually waiting for the train to go home from work. And at times the latest train comes at about an hour and a half...so I didn't want to wait that long and decided to try some food around the area, as Des Plaines was relatively new for me at the time. It was either between here or Leona's and I've had Leona's before...plus I like trying new things. I went into here and was greeted right away, which is nice and worth a star. There were a couple people in there with their children, so it was a lively atmosphere. The menu was fairly reasonable and everything looked great, along with pricing too. I only have a few complaints and one is the resturant was too quiet. It would have been nice to have some mellow music to go along with the vibe it looks like they're aiming for. Also, while I was eating my meal (which they have tasty potstickers!), I ultimately felt as if I was being watched while eating. Which made me feel very uncomfortable. My final complaint is that it felt very cold in there, I had to eat with my winter coat on...which it's very uncomfortable eating with a bulky winter coat! Would I go back here? Definitely, the staff is nice and the food and pricing is great too. I could have easily ended up with leftovers for another meal, but I just as easily ate it all because it was so delicious. My dish was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Went here last week with my girlfriend food was very good and affordable. We got the crab Rangoon which was delicious, but I thought it was weird that it came as 5 pieces instead of an even/easily split able number. For entrees we got the pad ki Mao and an order of orange chicken. Food was very good and server was attentive. Dinner and appetizer was less than $30 including tip so that was also a plus. I had high hopes for this place based on the reviews and ended up being very disappointed. We had drunken noodles, which were greasy, bland and a little burnt tasting. You know how good pad thai is light in color, has ground peanuts, cucumber, cilantro, maybe some julienned carrots or cabbage? Not this pad thai. Greasy, again, dried out chicken, and did not include a lime wedge-my pet peeve. Spring rolls dry and tasteless with a boring dipping sauce. Really only a carry out place. Some stools, 2 tables for 2, but you have to eat of the styrofoam containers. Styrofoam is an irresponsible choice for restaurants today. Cashier was friendly-she gets the star. read more

Thai food fanatic and I must say food was ok. Service was the worst part of the experience. Waitress was unattentive and rude when I told her the Thai Tea she brought me didn't even have tea in it. I said it just tasted like sugar and milk and some aftertaste of premade syrup. She said just put water in it. After I told her I didn't want it she still never took it or removed from bill. Then one of my other guest at our table never received their meal and after several attempts to get the waitress to come over ...she never really cared to fix the issue other than saying we must of had bad communication. The good: The curry puffs were super delicious. And the crab rangoons were okay too - more cheese than crab but some people like it that way. Also, the service was great. I called in my order ahead of time and everything was made just like I wanted to. The bad: I had the spicy basil chicken as my entree. I cannot complain about the portion they gave me, for the price - really great value. But the food itself was not very good. The ground chicken was really dry and crumbly even though there was an oily sauce at the bottom of the dish. And there also seemed to be chunks of chicken with sinew and fat still attached to it. I thought was strange to find medium sized chicken pieces in a ground chicken dish. I'm hoping they were just having an off day. Thai Square used to be just down the street from my home. I would usually eat there a few times a month. I love their food and often focused on their spiciest dishes. I would always order the food hot(spice) and still add pepper sauce to the meal. I never left a plate that wasn't empty. I was so disappointed when I saw that they were moving, and unfortunately, I haven't been to the new location. I am sure I will get there soon. I have never had a complaint with a meal, everything has always been fantastic. read more
