An update on what has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants that I keep on constant rotation for my feeding schedule. ThaiRock always satisfies! Last night was no exception. The Drunken Noodles were especially delicious. The variety of veggies were cooked to crispy perfection, the chicken was moist, the noodles were luxurious and the sauce was bowl-licking good. We also ordered the stuffed chicken wings as an appetizer (you can tell that we are not worried about cholesterol). This appetizer did not suit me well although my spouse liked it. The breading was beautifully executed and very crunchy but, for me, the stuffing was a tad monotonous, without much flavor. The service was - as always - the strong point for this fantastic restaurant. Each server was attentive, polite, friendly and delightful. ThaiRock is the real deal and each time I go, I fall in love all over again!!! read more

Went to ThaiRock on Mother's Day today with my family and really enjoyed it! The inside is beautiful and the environment was super chill and comfortable. I will say though our server was kind but kept telling us certain changes cannot happen with the food and then someone else would tell us it can happen which was very confusing through the night. For appetizers, we got the veggie spring rolls which were crispy and delicious, and the crispy chive dumplings were SO good. I had never tried them before and ended up loving them. I highly recommend getting the spring rolls and crispy chive dumplings!!! For mains, we ordered veggie drunken noodles, veggie pad see ew, spicy basil fried rice, and ka pow tofu. The ka pow tofu was definitely my favorite, super flavorful and came with white rice. For drinks, the spicy mango margarita (non alcoholic) was amazing and had a dried mango slice on top which was such a cool touch. The Phuket Sunset drink (non alcoholic) was also really pretty and looked like an actual sunset. For dessert, I got the mango sticky rice which was tasty too, but the portion size was smaller than I expected. Overall really good food and great vibes, would definitely come back!!! read more

Not enough good things can be said about this place! It's convenient with lots of parking right out front and behind, it's beautiful, open, and airy with really nice, earthy light fixtures that gives a natural, grounded feeling, the seating is comfortable, the place is spacious, the staff are all very nice, friendly, and welcoming -- and perhaps most important of all, accommodating of different needs. The food is, of course, delicious, nutritious, perfectly cooked, flavourful, healthy, and great for the entire sensory system. All of your senses will be pleased here! If you want to add a bit of spice, there is a tray of spice mixtures you can ask for that will be brought to the table, too .... Visiting around the Thai new year is especially cool because the staff all wear colourful tops for the occasion! I particularly enjoy the Pad Woonsen that I request and receive vegetarian with no problem. I've been to many a Thai restaurant that would not accommodate this simple request -- or would do so only begrudgingly or sometimes and after a struggle -- so I really appreciate that here, it's no problem and no hassle. The Tofu and Vegetables Soup is delicious, the Thai Iced Tea and Thai Iced Coffee come in a really cool broad metal cup -- very impressive! It really makes an impression when it comes out and is brought to the table. Sitting there, it looks like the Queen of the table to me! So shiny and inviting, wow! The cup isn't just some regular old, plain boring smooth shiny metal cup -- oh, no! It's hammered into a splendid work of art! The Mango with Sticky Rice has purple rice coloured with butterfly pea flower tea and it's beautiful! There is many a feast for the eye to be had here! I have been coming here since they opened and don't remember every dish I've gotten -- but don't remember ever being disappointed in anything, but rather amazed! I obviously enjoy the looks of things and that's important to me, so the fact that so much care is put into that here really makes a difference in my view. There is clearly care taken with how each piece of tofu is put on my plate so it comes out looking great! I find that makes it much more appetizing. It appeals to me, draws me in, and makes me want to eat it from the moment I first see each dish come into my visual awareness. I find the portions to be generous and think maybe sometime I could even just have the Tofu and Vegetable Soup as a meal if I wasn't too hungry. I enjoy the soft tofu in the soup and the firmer fried tofu in the Pad Woonsen. Besides, glass noodles are just fun! They're cool to look at, they're stretchy, and they taste great plus they're very healthy being made from mung beans and all. I just really like a good mung bean noodle! I'm always disappointed when I can't have it. For me, it makes a big difference that here, I can! The Fried Tofu starter is okay, but not my fave. (Can you tell I like tofu, though? Ha ha! Yes! I am a major tofu-lover, and that place well satisfies that craving!) I should also mention, the rice is perfect! There are big windows that let in a lot of light, so you can see very well while you dine, and cool little touches here and there such as little black rocks stacked up to make a nice little entryway to the slightly elevated seating area farthest from the entrance ... which, by the way, is a very welcoming place! You are greeted nicely here with a warm smile, and feel good from the moment of arrival! Thank goodness! What a relief! It's so nice to be able to just enter, be seated, and rest and relax while perusing the many choices and waiting not-too-long until the meal arrives ... and delights the tongue and tummy! My mouth is on fire. The food is delicious. But the heat! We said that we like 'spicy' and they delivered! The tom yum soup with shrimp was complex and flavorful and the mushrooms were so FRESH! The chicken ka pow was also well seasoned and delicious. My partner tried the chicken satay and he said that he would get them again (good sign). The restaurant's vibe is chill and low key. You can have a conversation and the music is low enough to exist without being disruptive. The service is a little slow but we can close to closing time so that might have something to do with it. I live around the area and had driven past here so many times. I finally tired it!! The restaurant is located at the Montrose Crossing shopping center next to Marshall's. Parking is ample, area is well lit and friendly. This was my first time and I couldn't stay, so I ordered take out. The restaurant itself is very cute! Well lit and nicely decorated. I walked in and went straight to the counter. The person behind the counter was very friendly. Greeted me with a smile and asked if I came to pick up an order. I took my order and went home to try! Food was yummy!!! I ordered the green curry and the duck roti. Everything was well packaged, and perfect temperature. Food was delicious! This place has such cute decor and a beautiful ambiance! It's modern and really cool vibe in there. The service is also really great. They were super quick, attentive, and patient. The food on the other hand is quite disappointing. The food didn't taste authentic to me or at least the changes in the recipes are from regions I don't recognize. Some of the food had an aftertaste that was displeasing to me and my friend. We got the Thai Iced Tea and Mai Thai to drink. Really enjoyed the Thai Tea and it s quite caffeinated (which I love) but have had better Mai Thai's. For starters we tried the Crispy Taro Spring Roll, which was good especially with the sauce it comes with. There was a twist from the taro as that added texture difference and not really a flavor difference. We were absolutely not a fan of the Duck Roti as it had an aftertaste. For mains, I got the Tom Yum with Shrimp, which was good but not one I'd return for and the Larb Gai (a fave of mine) which was honestly very disappointing. My friend got the Rice Topped Steamed Chicken (not pictured) and the sauces were good. The rice and chicken are plain and the sauce is what makes it. It came with one gingery sauce which I loved and one hoisin/sweet/tangy sauce which my friend just liked. I had a favorite Thai place in Rockville but this new spot is definitely better. My boyfriend and I started with the traditional Thai dishes that we love and that should have been all that we needed to taste. We also ordered the Tom yum soup and the broth was very comforting, and the House Salad was beyond just your standard house salad. Then we went back and decided to be a little more adventurous and ordered off the street food menu and we were blown away! Highly recommend for traditional Thai and the stuff that gets you out of your comfort zone! read more

Hands down the best Thai restaurant in the area! I go there regularly and get the boat noodle soup. I've been to multiple Thai restaurants in in Rockville/Bethesda/Potomac but this one tastes very authentic. Some of my other favorites here include: Ka nom jeeb and the crying tiger salad. Service is very fast and orders always come out correctly. They make sure you are comfortable with the spice level prior to ordering. I usually get 1-2 pepper levespice as my tolerance for spicy food is low. Shalom is a great bartender and the manager, Chu, is very friendly and always greets me with a smile. The ambiance is classy and the restaurant is very clean.. I mostly go there by myself. My parents love this place too and they were never big Thai food fans until they ate here. Lovely place, it was spacious and beautifully decorated. Thai restaurants have been upping their game on the aesthetic department. Food was big in servings, they have good amount on the plates. It is pricier than your average thai eatery but of course it comes with it when its actual ambience is a bit upscale. We went here on a sunday afternoon, I had the crispy pork belly with white rice. Came here last weekend. Wanted to try this place based on the great reviews and since the place resembles a cave from the outside. It was also really nice inside. Ordered the Drunken Noodles, which was good but I've had much better at other local restaurants. My daughter ordered the Satay Chicken skewers, which didn't come out with my dish. Needless to say, she did not like the seasoning at all. I told the waitress, and she didn't even attempt to care, nor offer a slight discount, since I had to order her the Fried Ribs (which were cut into small pieces with the bones). She didn't love this either but ate some of it with white rice. I personally thought the ribs were good. No kid friendly options available. The waitress was neither friendly, nor unfriendly. And it took a while for us to get the later order in, even after we told her we would be ordering something else. Anyway, not sure if I'll be back. read more

2.21.25 This restaurant replaced the former Tara Thai in Montrose Crossing. The food is delicious and likely the best that I've had in recent months. I highly recommend the duck roti, Moo Ping (pork skewers), and taro custard. During the holidays, I had the duck roti at another Thai restaurant, which I found to be disappointing. Today, I was impressed because the duck roti tasted fresh and wasn't dry like at the other restaurant. The sticky rice for the Moo Ping and taro custard were tender and chewy. The pork skewers were succulent. The service was friendly, and the food came out fast. This may just be one of my new favorite Thai restaurants in Montgomery County. The old Tara Thai restaurant at Montrose Crossing revamped to a new Thai place! Been waiting to try this place and decided to go with a group of my gym buddies, 9 of us. The decor was bright and inviting and it was decently crowded on a Friday night, but oddly the early crowd was very quiet. We stayed about 4 hours until close drinking and chatting and they didn't bother us. It got a little more lively later in the night, but they definitely needed to turn up the music to set the vibe, especially on a Friday night if they want the bar to fill. Their drinks were pretty and good as well. 4 star for ambiance. Service was great the first half, everything came out fast and piping hot. But then a couple in our group came late and one order wasn't put in and another took a while to come. 3.5 star for service. Food was good, pretty standard, but we didn't really order from their "ThaiRock Street Food (Signature)" menu either. I took a bite of everyone's food and their fried rice had a good "wok" taste. I love when they put the pineapple fried rice in the shell, then you know they're fresh pineapples! Crab fried rice and Pad Thai was surprisingly spicy or maybe that's just how my friends ordered them! Chicken satay had a nice sweetness to the flavor, and the curry puff and spring rolls were fried nicely. Mango sticky rice was chopped up a bit thick and it was purple rice, but the portion was a bit small. Overall 4 star for food. read more

Came in here with a family member the other day to see how it is. You could say I'm a bit conflicted on this one. Place--clean, bright, well ordered. I was here before it became Thai Rock, looks like it should: different. Plenty of references to street food, Bangkok locations, and such. Didn't feel like we were being crowded. Food--obviously when we walked in we were just thinking about getting the usual (traditional) Thai food dishes. Thai Rock is more about the street food scene, etc. That being said there are some of the usual dishes for normies and old fogies. It's not all foo-foo. Staff--no problem there. Pleasant, polite. Location--great! Plenty of garage parking to the right, in the same area as Starbucks, Burlington, Giant, and Target. Also within walking distance of Twinbrook metro (about 4 streets down). Overall impression: it's a good place, not necessarily a great place depending on your expectation. I think the 'starter' dishes were a bit overpriced (instead of $6-$10 it was $9-$12), so we avoided that. They do the water bit smartly, by bringing two glasses and a liter of ice water. No need to ask for more there. The dishes we did order (pad see yew and ginger chicken) were on par with other places we've been to. The food wasn't oiled-up or 'Americanized' like some. It was good, I'd go there again. But I wouldn't be ordering extra dishes. read more

I've been on a Tom Yum soup adventure the past two weeks. I've tried Tom Yum at a number of different establishments in the Bethesda/Rockville area. I ordered Tom Yum with vegetables. The price was nine dollars. Somewhat higher than others I've tried The broth was excellent. The right amount of heat, strong, lime flavor. Great consistency and color. I'm used to seeing an abundance of mushrooms and cilantro which I did not find in this dish. I counted three very small mushrooms and really could not find cilantro in the dish. I tried vegetables rather than chicken on this offering and it was disappointing. 70% of the vegetables were cabbage. Two small slices of carrot and two very small miniature corns? two or three snow peas. I really wish the variety had been a little more balanced. Also no cherry tomatoes. I would give the broth a 5 and the veggie component 2.5 to 3. read more

A really lovely restaurant. I shared ThaiRock Pad Thai and Panang Curry with Chicken with a friend. The Pad Thai was tasty, although I felt the noodles were a little "pasty" and was surprised there were only 2 shrimp and very little chicken. But the Panang Curry made everything better! It was just delicious! And putting the curry broth over the Pad Thai noodles took all of the pastiness away! I'd be much happier with a side if plain noodles rather than rice with the curry, it felt like a better "vessel" for the broth. I'll be back! read more

We went on a random Tuesday night and the restaurant was completely empty besides one other family that was there. So I thought we would get fast service. In reality, it was the opposite. We waited at least 10 minutes to get our waters and then another 15 after that until our waitress came back around to get our order. I thought, "okay it may just be one of those places that has slow service but the food is bomb." My wife and I got the pad Thai to share. I was excited to see another Thai restaurant open nearby since I love Thai food and always enjoy trying new spots. Unfortunately, this one was a miss. On the positive side, the staff were extremely kind and patient, and I really appreciate that they offer gluten-free options -- a big plus for me. I ordered the white garlic and pepper dish -- something I've tried at just about every Thai place I frequent -- and this version was disappointing. It almost felt like the chef had never made it before. I chose beef and shrimp, and both were overcooked. The beef, in particular, was very poor quality. I had to spit out several pieces due to bad cuts. While the flavor wasn't terrible, it lacked the depth I'm used to, and I found myself reaching for spices from the table just to get through the meal. The tom kha soup was okay -- decent, but I've had better. One highlight: the Thai iced tea was served in a fun, oversized mug/bowl combo, which was a nice touch. In the end, with so many outstanding Thai options within a mile of me, I don't see myself coming back. We visited Thai Rock on a Friday afternoon and were seated quickly without a reservation, which was great. The staff was friendly and service was smooth throughout the meal. We started with the duck roti and ka noom jeeb--definitely recommend the duck roti, which was flavorful and well-executed. For our entrees, we tried the crispy pork belly and the shrimp paste fried rice. Portions were generous and the food came out quickly, but the flavors were a bit more subtle than we expected. Overall, a decent experience. We might come back to explore more of the menu--there's potential here, especially based on how good that duck roti was. read more

They are having their Grand Opening tomorrow, March 5th- Service was a 5/5 - everything you want in a restaurant ( friendly, attentive, available) Food was a 4/5 - the cashew chicken was probably one of the best I had- a unique twist where it has the right amount of kick and tons of flavor while the fried rice (with pork as protein) was one of the worst I've had... it was greasy and flavorless and the pork was beat up and fatty. We tried the garlic beef stir- fry which has garlic, beef and broccoli... again, pieces beef was fatty (a food turnoff for me...) We had the dumplings which were delicious (a little larger than I have had in other Thai places). The Thai tea was pretty average with a unique presentation - an ornamental metal bowl which keeps the drink pretty darn cold. Mango rice was a delicious finish- it was still warm when served. New Thai restaurant on the block, and everyone wants to know if it's the best Thai in MOCO. Previously, Tara thai, the location got revamped with nice interior and stunning bathrooms. High ceilings make the dining experience and food a more elevated Thai venture. We got the duck roti appetizer, crying tiger, steamed chicken, pad see ew, and stick rice dessert. As a final verdict, this is one of the best Thai restaurants in MOCO that rivals thai cottage bistro in shady grove with various renditions of thai street foods. For the pad see ew, I'd stick to Kimm Imm Thai, since Thai rock is bit too sweet and overcooked for my liking. However, the rice dishes crying tiger, and steamed chicken were one of the freshest meats with aromatic and fragrant rice dishes. Lastly, the mango sticky rice was super ripe and the sticky rice was super fresh. read more

I went through three separate dashers because the restaurant didn't have the food ready and then finally called the restaurant directly 2 hours after I ordered. They told me they had "lost my order" but refused to issue any sort of discount for the error. I canceled the order and will not be eating here again. read more

Tonight we ate at the latest new Thai restaurant in Rockville, Thai Rock. It took the former Tara Thai space. There's no lack of decent Thai establishments to choose from in MoCo. I would recommend this as one of the good ones in terms of taste, quality and value. Spacious, attentive service, good spacing of tables, authentic tasting Thai dishes, plenty of parking. No loud music so you can enjoy dinner conversations. The standouts for us are the Tom Zap spare ribs soup, House pad Thai, chives dumplings, Thai style steamed chicken and the Taro custard with sticky rice. read more

Went with my Thai wife and a good friend. We had 3 appetizers and 4 main dishes to share. All were at least as good as I have had in the past. The Thai wife said her Yen-Ta-Four was better than what she was used to eating when she grew up in Bangkok. She said that the chef must REALLY know what he was doing to get just the right combination of ingredients. Never had the Pad Woonsen before this visit, but now, I could eat it everyday (lol). Tried this place for lunch with colleague - I would certainly go back! I tried to switch it up with my order and I think I'll just keep it simple on my next visit. My friend enjoyed her duck basil, we both really liked the chive dumplings - this was our favorite, my crying Tiger steak was disappointing - I didn't know what to expect. It wasn't bad but it was very simple and I was underwhelmed: my steak was over cooked, the sauce was oddly funky tasty and sharp to me. I would not order that again but would try something else on the menu. Our waitress seemed to be annoyed with us... not mean or rude just annoyed. She kept checking on us - more in the, "when are you leaving" way than "do you need help" way, trying to clear our table every 5 minutes, didn't tell us about the specials, so 4 stars is really 3.5 for me as I didn't love my food.
