My sister in law and I went to the 401 last night for dinner. I had been a few times since we moved to the area but hadn't been in awhile and wanted to try their new menu. When we walked in the door, the host looked at me and said nothing for about 10 seconds. It was very awkward as he seemed annoyed we had come in. Eventually, he reluctantly asked if he could help us. I said that we had two for dinner, and he replied that it would be about a 30 min wait. As it was a Saturday night, we knew there might be a wait so we were fine with that. We were told to go wait in the back hall (no seats). I asked if we could get a drink from the bar while we waited and was told no because the bartender was too busy. There appeared to be no one else waiting and yet we were out in the back hall and not even allowed to have a drink while we passed the time. I don't usually write reviews but I was so disappointed by the customer service we experienced that I don't think I'd go back to try the food! There was absolutely no attempt to make our experience a good one. For a restaurant that relies on a loyal local customer base, our experience was super disappointing. Particularly sad for us, as we both worked at this location years ago when it was Widow Fletchers. :( read more

Nope. So many restaurants in the area and we regrettably picked this one. I will say that bbq chicken nachos were good and the burger was ok. The pepperoni flatbread had peppers in it even though not mentioned in description , and the kids chicken tender meal was burnt. We were seated and put order in for an appetizer which was slow to arrive. It took forever for the waitress to come back for orders and even longer for food to arrive. She asked how everything was 20 seconds after bringing food and that was it. She told us to be careful not to burn ourselves when she placed our food in front of us which was almost funny because nothing was hot. It was almost 90° today and humid, but they AC apparently wasn't working right or it was unable to properly keep the temp comfortable. I should've just set my $85 on fire and flung out the window. It took our waitress a minute to warm up, but as soon as she did, she was great. The food was on par as well. Baked haddock was a little on the dry side, Cobb salad with steak tips was absolutely delicious. We are thankful that we were able to enjoy a nice meal with our family while visiting this area. read more

Extremely rude and I will not be going back here just because of the 3 experiences I had with him. Ugh. What a shame. Bland bland bland. Spinach dip tasted like nothing. Steak au Poivre tasted like nothing but peppercorns. Thai chicken salad was good but soooo spicy it burned my lips. I had a OMG burger here and it was delicious! It has caramelized onions and mushrooms, I definitely recommend this place. Plenty of seating here, the interior has an upstairs and downstairs. There is also seating in the outside which over looks the parking lot. read more

It's a good thing I clicked to Yelp *after* eating here -- because these reviews are 100% wrong. I don't know why they are wrong, but I ate at the 401 last night with my girlfriend and we had a great meal! I ordered a new item on the menu called Mate's Plate (bacon-wrapped scallops, crab-stuffed shrimp, lobster tail, and haddock; with a side of sauteed veggies and potato) and she ordered a salad with 1/2 boiled lobster -- and we both thoroughly enjoyed our meal! We arrived around 6:30 p.m. on a freezing night and were quickly escorted to a table, a booth next to windows. I counted several other couples also eating. There is a bar and that was about a quarter-filled with patrons. The drink menu was expansive but we stuck to water. The menu is three pages long but very big in choices -- from seafood entrees to burgers to mac and cheese bowls to assorted sliders. I'll definitely be back and try other menu items. P.S. Walk upstairs and look at the wine room. The walls and ceiling are completely covered by used wine bottles. It's the funkiest thing I've ever seen. And, they have a kids menu so bring your juniors. read more

I have always loved the 401 it's our go to place but today when we showed up there were two bartenders who I think must be the owners daughter's other than that they have no business being behind the bar. We waited and waited for a drink because there was a very good looking guy at the end of the bar and they could not be bothered to take care of anybody who was sitting there. The smaller of the two was the worst she had a terrible attitude could not get out of her own way at least the blonde was trying but they really need to get the old Bartender is back or they will not be seeing us there anymore. read more

A pretty solid place . Has secured area for your dog outside. Outside seating and smoking area. Plenty of parking. One lot at the restaurant one across the street and another down the street a city lot. They are motorcycle friendly. Good food good drinks. The Thai chicken salad is unbelievable. Absolutely loved this place... we were just looking for SOME place to eat in hampton and have a nice sit down experience, but we weremt expecting it to be THIS enjoyable! We were lucky enough to get a seat upstairs and experience the wine den, which was absolutely stunning and unique to experience while eating. The server was very nice and charismatic. The pulled pork nachos we got were very delicious, especially considering how hungry we all were. I got an american dip sandwhuch which was pretty tasty - everyone else got food that i also would have loved to eat and they were satisfied with, with some great looking intresting mac and cheese and equally inteesting but good looking thai lettuce wraps. Out of all the restaurants we could have paid a visit to in hampton, i am extremely glad this is the one we chose, as this way exceeded our expectations of just a chill restauraunt experience! read more

The reviews on this place are dead wrong, and I have no idea what they must have done to have such a horrible experience. Went for the early bird special with my father, 3 courses for less that 14$. Plenty to choose from on the special menu as well. Salad, a full plate of haddock, and warm apple pie. Salad was crisp and very fresh, haddock was fall apart flakey and served with some amazing mashed potatoes, and the pie was an amazing way to round out the evening. The special is offered Monday through Friday from 2 pm until 5 pm. The place is a bit loud, but nothing too crazy. I was at the 401 Tavwen in Hampton, having drinks and dinner with my friend. We were just sitting there, and talking and soneone came up to me and I had a flat tire. Im sitting at the bar thinking what am I going to do?!..Long story short, one of the cooks named Bill changed my flat for me. I'm so glad I did not have to pay or be charged for a tow. I'm very grateful and thankful for Bill. If it was not for him, I'm not sure what I would have done. The staff ips very friendly ams tje setvice is great! I feel like family when I go in. We were staying at a nearby campground in Salisbury and decided to jump in the car and travel north up Route 1 to Portsmouth. We saw the 401 Tavern and looked like a great place to stop. It was a Tuesday and many places is Salisbury and Newburyport were closed due to COVID. That said, this place was open and it was great. The waitress gave us some good recommendations. We got to start and teriyaki and buffalo were very good. I also tried grandmas pot pie and it was also a good choice. Including the pulled pork sandwich and Reuben that we all had. The place itself was decorated nice historic pictures of the area with a rustic American appeal. We really enjoyed this place and in the future, will be stopping again. read more

The rating should be 3.5 stars. Better than a three star but some issues knocked it off being a four star. I ordered takeout. It was a Saturday night and the place was busy. I liked the interior with the two bars. I ordered the patty melt and the steak tips. We had to call it in because the patty melts along with several other items listed on the website were not on the online order menu. The preparation was prompt despite being busy. I was early and wanted to get a beer while waiting but I could not get any of the bartenders' attention although they were busy and I did not try too hard. My wife had the tips and said they were very good. My patty melt was tasty. I had to use utensils because the juices from the burger made the bottom bread too soft to pickup as a sandwich, but that often happens with a patty melt because of it just being bread instead of a bun so not a big deal. There was a lot of bacon which I liked and the onions, although not really caramelized, added a nice taste. The side of slaw was good and crunchy. The things that take it down from a four star rating: 1) we were missing a side; 2) I contacted them about the side through the website contact option and did not hear back; 3) They charged $0.99 "COVID" takeout charge. It is not the charge I mind but the fact that they did not mention it. I know that many places use this charge to cover the takeout material cost - although I declined any napkins and silverware - not every restaurant does so it should be mentioned. It would have not stopped us from ordering the takeout, I just think it is the right thing to do. I would likely return, probably to try eat in for the atmosphere. read more

A man who I believe is the owner heard I was from out of town and gifted me a hoodie from the restaurant. I'm here for a few more weeks and I WILL be going back!! Service was good, friendly. A small cup of chili ($7) with kidney beans and different spices was really good. If you're prepping for a colonoscopy in 2 days, this would do the trick based on what happened the next day. The seafood casserole? ($22?) was very good. What happened to this place? They jacked up the prices and the food was bad. I couldn't care less if prices were increased...if the food stayed consistent. Nachos with chicken (that was dry) was $18. $18 for nachos? Nachos were burnt as well as the quesadilla (with chicken was $15). The kids hot dogs were also cold. Kids hot dog was $9 (it did come with ice cream...but $9 for a kids meal...come on). Just a reminder...They do not have fries. So again...$9 for a hot dog? The worst part...They used reusable straws for the kids cups...what the...I have never ever gone to a place with reusable straws in the kids cup (and they were all chewed up). One last note...the nachos app came about 5 minutes before the main courses. Will be hard pressed to go back. What a disappointment. read more

we stopped here today after spending the day in the cold on the beach. The kids were apparently starving to death and on the brink of death. I got the fish sandwich, Usually when you get one of these the fish is deep fried and just way too heavy. i was a little disappointed that the fish wasn't deep fried but by the end i was happy it wasn't! It was much more fresh tasting and not so greasy! The kids had delicious Mac and Cheese! The only reason i did not give this place a 5 was 1) the waitress, although very nice, never came back to ask how things were or to refill our waters. and 2) the seating was very cramped and crowded. Service was horrible right out of the gate. Hot seated outside out back on the lower deck. We weren't given a choice/ option to sit indoors in the dining room. As expected we were forgotten after we ordered drinks and food. Our table never got set up I had to walk up to the station and get silverware and napkins.
