I should have read the reviews prior to ordering food from this place. I order fried shrimp and a chicken Caesar salad with extra dressing on the side. My food took an hour and 50 minutes to actually show up. There was no dressing nor was the any cocktail sauce, the shrimp was also cold and soggy. Would not recommend this place. read more

This "restaurant" charges a service fee for using a credit card. There are no signs posted and no notification of this fee. When I pointed out that I would've paid cash, the employee tried to say there were signs. We looked around and saw nothing posted. We spent over $60 ordering food for friends that are out of town - so we'll be taking our business elsewhere that isn't so desperate to overcharge the food price and add a service fee on top of it. read more

They have a decent amount of beers on tap, atmosphere is drab and nobody greets you when you walk into the place. I had lobster bisque and it had so much salt in it I couldn't even finish one bite. The waitress is friendly but not at all knowledgable about beers (the place is called ale house.) They have a lot of work to do to get this place where it needs to be considering newtown is a busy restaurant area. I had a grilled chicken arugula salad with apples and blue cheese, wasn't bad. Haven't been to this place in years. Googled hand carved roast beef sandwiches and it was the first place to come up. Decided to give it a try after years. Glad to say we were impressed by the quality of the food. Obviously we had the hand-carved roast beef sandwiches which were piled high with probably close to a half a pound of meat. Or the broccoli rabe which was made to order long fried hot pepper and french fries that were Kristen golden brown and damn near perfect. The beer was cold and fresh. Would definitely recommend and have plans of going back again. Enjoy. a little on the high side as far as dollar amount but every once in awhile not a bad idea. read more

I couldn't have been more disappointed in a meal than I was at the ale house. First, the place is disgusting. The menus were sticky, booths seemed dirty and the the overall atmosphere wasn't great. They seem to pride themselves on their roast beef, which is what my fiancé and I ordered. To say that the sandwich was one of the worst I've ever had is an understatement. The meat was cold and so tough that it was a battle to take a bite. I had to floss my teeth when I got home. Also incredibly overpriced, as it cost me another 7 bucks to have curly fries with my sandwich. It's sad to say that the curly fries were the highlight of the meal. This was the first and last time I'll waste my money at this dump. Do yourself a favor and check out just about any other restaurant. read more

We have been loyal customers for more than 25 + years but we will not be back. When we got our check today there was a notice at the bottom saying that a4% service will be added if your not paying in cash ! There is no notice of this charge on the menu ! After discuss this with staff and other customers no one knew about this "service charge " apparently this just went into effect today. J asked to speak with owner who was there before the whole bar was made aware of this service charge but he mysteriously disappeared! When we were leaving I did see 2 posted signs about a discount would've offered for paying Cash and that a service would be added to the check. One sign was posted inside front door behind the door you open to enter the restaurant and the other sign was posted on a glass partition on a booth just inside the door. I took pictures of them and will try to post with this review Bottom line is you lost 2 customers and I am going to share on my social media accounts and also the good old fashioned way of talking to everyone I know to let them know what a sneaky business owner you are. I have been a customer of The Ale House since it opened in the late 19060's. It has been sold a couple of times since then. Since the new owner took it over the quality of the food has gone down hill. About a month ago my buddy and I stopped to get lunch, and left wishing we had gone elsewhere. Today I picked up 2 beef sandwiches that again made me feel that I should have gone somewhere else. I asked for rare meat & it was medium at best, & the roll tasted like it came in yesterday and the sandwich was dry. I need to find a new place to get a good roast beef sandwuich. read more

Only good thing about this place is the roast beef sandwich. Everything else is, overpriced and just NOT good. If you are in the mood for a great roast beef sandwich, go there but for anything else, stay away. I've been coming to the Ale House with a few good friends of mine in "the regulars" gang on Saturday afternoons for awhile now, and nothing but positive things to say about this place. Between the helpful, attentive staff, good drinks, and banter across the bar, this place is a CHEERS lover's dream. The food always comes out quickly and is hot, you get what you order at the Ale House, no frills, and that's exactly what they're going for. Plenty of great beer on tap as well! As other reviews have said, it is tucked away in a shopping plaza, so it can be hard to find. If you're looking for a bite and a brew and some good company, the Ale House will have a barstool waiting for you. read more

I have eaten at the Ale house on many occasions through the years. I had not eaten there for the past two years. Today I went for lunch and ordered the roast beef sandwich which I have always enjoyed. Frankly it was the worst sandwich I think I've ever eaten and if I could give it less than one star I would. The tough chewy bread clearly was microwaved and the beef tough and microwave feeling as well. I'm not sure that it was microwaved but that is the only possible explanation I can give for its rubbery texture. Additionally, french fries came afterThe sandwiches were eaten and our plates collected and check delivered before we finished. I said nothing before leaving but decided to call and just tell them about my experience, I received a very lukewarm I'm really sorry to hear about that. This one is definitely off my list. My family and I go here often for dinner and always order the same thing - their Roast Beef Sandwiches. They are delicious and fresh and very rarely have any gristle that interrupts your meal. They recently redid the interior and made it non-smoking so while somewhat noisy (half of the seating is around a bar), their food is delicious. read more

A pub style restaurant with a big bar area. We made the mistake of sitting at the bar opposite the food prep area that is glass enclosed. We ordered their roast beef sandwich. We received the sandwiches, and as we were eating started watching 3 men who were working in the kitchen. We both saw cross contamination of food. There was NO handwashing the entire time, by any of them. One man was wiping his nose, picking at his face, on his cellphone then reached into prep containers bare handed and made sandwiches. He then wiped his hands on his shirt. The other worker with the roast beef carving station was wiping the board he was cutting meat on previously with a rag that another man had been using to clean the stainless steel and wipe up random food that was on the other station. Then he was eating pieces of the meat, wiping his hands on his shirt and scratching himself! Eeks! I said something to the waitress about what we were watching and she said they could wash their hands if they wanted to, there is a sink in there. Lol She didn't seem surprised. As we were drinking our beer we watched the same man who was wiping his nose etc start taking out tomatoes, lettuce and meat with his bare hands again. He was consolidating half filled containers into one, handling each item. .....then wiped his hands on his shirt and grabbed the dirty rag. The owner needs to address cleanliness. Sometimes it's better not to see what's going on. ....unless it's before you've ordered! Eat here and just hope you are lucky you don't catch anything. Second choice don't watch what's going on and hope for the best or if you do end up at the Ale House...... JUST DRINK BEER! read more

In the past my husband and I were frequent visitors to The Ale House. We especially enjoyed their roast beef sandwiches, a signature dish. Over the past year or so the food has slipped a lot. Tonight we thought we would give it another try. The food was terribly disappointing for a very expensive price point of $67.00 for 2 (including drinks). The bartender, Jerry, was great, however, and he truly tried to steer us to the right entries. Their roast beef sandwich is so tough and totally not worth what they charge. The only chance you have is to ask for a rare roast beef sandwich, which is more tender, and they didn't have that available at 6:00pm on a Friday night. Imagine that?? It is a shame to see a place decline like they have. The new owner apparently doesn't care. read more

When asked the waitress she didn't know she came back to say it's "market price" so I had no idea what I'd be charged, again she had to ask and it was $10.45 which I expected the sandwich to sing and dance when it came to the table but was disappointed in the portion size and quality for that price! Definitely not worth the $. French fries were so-so frozen type and had to pay separately for them at a $3.50 price tag -ouch! Beer selection was varied but didn't have any of my current favs so I settled for a domestic and that came with a $5.50 tag for a pint glass. Where are the original owners? The food has changed, the bar decor has changed, the, "Ale House" ambience is forever gone.

They used to have good food, especially the roast beef, but the new owners have changed a lot. The old kitchen crew is not there and they don't make roast beef sandwiches the same way. Also the last few times I got a medium burger it was charred on the outside but still pink on the inside. Turn the heat down and learn to cook a burger without burning it. read more

Since the change in ownership, the interior improvements have been nice (not as dark and more bar space) but not the same as it used to be. The former owners were a class act and insured consistent quality and cleanliness. Whoever the new owner is, they lack the same abilities and it shows - poor service, dirty tables, floor, etc.. The food is not bad but not the same as it used to be. The service is lousy, poor attention to detail. Overall, I was disappointed and shall probably not return unless I am desperate. I used to love this place. I went here for decades growing up in Media, PA. But several years back, the owner sold out and the new owners ruined perhaps the best beef sandwich in the area. They also removed the original bartenders and staff that had been there for years. I gave it a try, but the beef sandwich was dry tasteless and overpriced. The original sandwich( prior owner), was delicious and served hand cut to order from rare to well done, with delicious beef juice and cheese on a fresh Kaiser roll. Also they use to have the best shrimp salad anywhere with huge shrimp in it and lots of them. Not anymore, I tried twice and both times were dismal. I have crossed this place off my list forever. Sadly, the same fate came to my other old haunt, The Riddle Ale House, in Media , PA. Nothing like they were in their heyday. Thankfully Nicks Original Roast Beef has come to our area, now in West Chester and offers the best in Beef sandwiches. Originally from Philly, it also has a location in Springfield , PA.
