I was underwhelmed for the cost. Service was pleasant and professional and drinks were good. The menu of sides and starters was more appealing than the entrees, which were relatively basic. Autumn bisque was yummy, but lobster bisque a bit oversalted. My husband enjoyed his pork chop, but the only entree that really grabbed me was the market fish. It was salmon that night -my least fave fish- but it was well cooked at medium. There was also a fruit fly circling our table, which is always kind of ugh. Disappointing - my expectations were perhaps unfairly high. The VERY limited selection - 6 choices, which raises the assumption of a focus and delivery of superior dishes. The pappardelle was amazing, but a little cooler than it should be in its presentation. The burger was perfectly fine but far less interesting than the description - the fries did not help my opinion. Even the lettuce salad was lacking in taste despite the obvious freshness of its ingredients. So, good place, but not the superior experience I thought it would offer. The servers in a way are very friendly - but they charged for two wines we did not order, corrected the bill, but it would have been nice to offer an apology. We just stopped in for a quick drink and snack while walking around Rhinebeck and once again The Amsterdam is the place to be. It was a little after 5:00 and they just opened up but there were already customers filing in. I highly recommend a reservation but there were some spots at the bar so we had a seat there. We had some drinks and the chef's choice meat and cheese charcuterie plate. It was exactly what we were looking for. It had a fine mix of tasty bites. The atmosphere is cozy and their main courses are top notch. I will always recommend that anyone in the area, come in and be amazed. read more

Probably my favorite meal of my trip to New York! The food was amazing and so was the dining atmosphere! The outdoor dining of the amsterdam was very spaced out and nicely decorated with lights and umbrellas. Although we didn't dine inside, the interior was also cool, from the moodiness of the bar, to the open concept kitchen! At first glance, I loved the rustic plating of every dish--but the food was more than just eye appeal. Every dish I ate was like a *big eyes* "mmmmm" moment! From the foie gras and cheese plate, to my main dish, the decadent and creamy mushroom pappardelle! My pasta was cooked perfectly, and I loved the texture of the sheets of wide noodles. The sauce was also super yummy, and I added grilled chicken to the dish. Since my food was pretty rich, and I had gotten full off bread in the beginning, I didn't have room for dessert, which I'm sure would've been amazing!! :(( overall a 10/10 experience at the Amsterdam!! read more

Absolutely fantastic! This has honestly been one of the best high dining experiences I have been to in a while with one of the best unique menus I have seen. I came here to treat my grandmother over the weekday as I was in Poughkeepsie. I knew of the place from a travel book I own about Hudson valley day trips from the city. Its menu of cheeses also looked like something we both would enjoy. What we ended up getting though was some of the most delicious Foie gras I have ever had. The soft fatty liver was drizzled with cranberry sauce and went perfect with the brioche toast! It was also perfect for my grandmother since she needs soft food to eat. Besides the wonderful Foie gras we also had desserts and other entries each one delicious in their own right. With our meals there was one Fig based cocktail which I adored and would of had more of if we weren't exploring other drinks on the menu. As a visitor I also found the "market" section of the restaurant fun to shop at. They had weird things, imports and local grocery items. I tended to gravitate to the local NY made stuff.. there were these biscotti treats which I really loved and bought a bunch of. Service, meals, shopping this place was a the pinnacle of dining experiences we have been to so far in upstate NY. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to dine out while in the Hudson Valley. read more

At first the meal was strong- started with a wonderfully curated cheese plate- loved it... Then 8 Flies infiltrated our meal & attacked everything on the table. It became disgusting, rendering our half cheese plate inedible for sanitary reasons. Staff were informed but did literally NOTHING about situation. Just went for brunch. Took 30 minutes to order. Waited 45 minutes for mediocre food. The burger (medium rare) came so raw the server was happy to take it back. Waited another 20 minutes. The burger was raw again. Snarky server said, "That's our chef's medium rare." We sit at the bar and have spectacular food and delicious/creative cocktails served by fun, professional and interesting people. No idea where the owner finds such great staff, and I lived in North Brooklyn for a decade and have been to all the great and creative AND HIDDEN restaurants that have come and gone in Greenpoint and Williamsburg (I'm looking at you Troost) Order a steak medium rare with the mushroom appetizer served together, take a bite of steak with some mushrooms and have your mind blown. read more

If I had written this review prior to Saturday night, I would've given the Amsterdam a very rare five. We've eaten here several times for brunch & dinner, and never had a bad meal. After eating here Saturday night, I'm settling on 4 stars. Service has always been friendly and attentive, and has never been a problem. The food has always been delicious and well prepared. The meat and cheese platter is my favorite and we generally order it each time we visit. However, on our last visit, I made a reservation and did not realize until we arrived that I did not have a choice of seating when reserving. Previously, when making a reservation, I had the choice of the porch, downstairs dining area, or upstairs dining area. The porch is lovely for brunch and the upstairs dining area is perfect for an intimate dinner when we have a rare child free evening to ourselves. The market in the downstairs dining was removed since our last visit and converted into more dining space, which is where we were seated on our latest visit. It's a nice space but not as intimate and cozy as the upstairs dining area. I'm not sure the upstairs dining area was open on Saturday but I would've much preferred sitting up there in a less cavernous space. We arrived 20 minutes prior to our reservation and they graciously accommodated us and seated us early. I'm assuming due to staffing shortages, they had limited staff working because most of the dining room remained empty while we were there despite a sign at the entrance saying they were fully booked for the evening. My one major complaint is that in the time since we first visited the restaurant, the menu changes very little. Appetizers vary seasonally, but entrees remain the same and there's generally one burger, one seafood dish, one pasta dish, one pork, one chicken and one duck dish that rotate sauces/vegetables. On our latest visit, I asked if there were any specials and the only option we were offered was a portion of three scallops to be added to any dish for a cost of $22. We recently went on a beach vacation in Delaware and I was able to get a scallop entrée for not much more than that. On this most recent visit, I had the duck entrée, which was a whopping $45. The meat was good and flavorful and well seasoned and cooked properly, and I understand costs have risen, but it was not a $45 dish in my opinion. Our prior visit was a bit less than a year ago for our anniversary and the Chinese five spice duck entrée I had then was much more interesting and cost less. There was nothing wrong with my entrée, and the corn accompaniment was quite tasty and hearty. I felt my husband's pappardelle needed another minute to qualify as al dente, and though tasty, again, it was pricey considering there was no protein in it. $29 for noodles is steep. Cocktails have gone from $15 on our last visit to $17. The cocktail list does not change very much and generally there's one tequila/vodka/rum/Mezcal/gin etc cocktail on offering. The cocktails are very well-made but at $17, they should be. Costs on each item have risen a few dollars and I understand food costs are up but with rising food costs, comes increasing standards. Food and service have to be exceptional and unfortunately, our last visit fell short. The downstairs dining room felt like eating in a bar with a dining room attached, albeit a more upscale one, and I missed the ambience of the upstairs dining area. There was nothing wrong with our last visit, but there was nothing really exceptional, either. We'll be back, but perhaps next time for brunch. I can't help but feel that on our most recent visit, we ordered less than we normally do but spent the most. read more

We had to make a reservation before going. Sat at the bar and ordered the risotto and their burger. Risotto was delicious. I also ordered a side of mushrooms which complimented the dish. Burger was very good but fries were extremely salty. The restaurant has great atmosphere, but it was little too pricey, so I don't imagine us going back. Also, one thing we couldn't not notice was that a bartender cut her finger pretty bad trying to open a new bottle of whiskey. She just sort of wrapped a piece of napkin on her finger and kept on making drinks, even though we could see blood through the napkin. That was a big no no for us. Recently dined here in their outdoor area and loved the setup, social distancing, vibe, service, and most importantly the food! The outdoor area is great, with a fireplace, tent to cover from any stray showers, and trees nearby. Ordered a Flying 75 cocktail to start which was a good size and quite tasty. For an entree ordered the Veal Scallopini which came with a delicious sauce along with a variety of veggies that complimented it very well. Definitely recommend The Amsterdam and plan to come back next time when around the Catskill Mountains. read more

When it comes to service the Amsterdam surely has it correct. Chris the Co-proprietor & Events Director is quite masterful at her craft. She made sure that every moment of my dining pleasure there was one of high standards. My cocktail was exceptional... wow I had an appetizer at the bar then decided to dine in the courtyard out back. Dinner was every bit the exceptional meal I desired and was served. So fresh as if your grandmother made it. Kudos to their chef .. I could have licked my plate then & there. I ordered strawberry shortcake as my dessert but found it to be not as tasty as I had hoped. I relayed this to Chris and she immediately saw to it that I had a different dessert which definitely the right choice. As this dessert kNocked it out the ball park. Wow! Before I start, did I saw Wow? This was one of the best meals I have had in some time. I had a very good Brooklyn Brewery IPA and my DW had an excellent house cocktail. Dinner was fantastic. I had the duck breast that was cooked perfectly. The seared foie gras with it was amazing. DW had one of the best dishes I've had in a restaurant in a long time. She had the veal scallopini. The veal was super tender and the "veal jus" was unbelievable. First of all, I just have to say that I'm shaking my head at some of these reviews... "pompous and circumstances", seriously? Next. I have to wonder if these people visited the same restaurant that we did. My husband and I have not stopped talking about how amazing our experience was at The Amsterdam. I called at 6:15 on a Sunday night to ask if there were any available tables for two. I was told by Fletch (who I later discovered is the manager) that they could seat us as early as 7:00, but we preferred a later time, so he was happy to secure us an 8:00 reservation. We were seated outside on the lovely patio with tables way more than 6 feet apart, and we felt completely comfortable and safe. After perusing the cocktail menu for a while without being able to choose between all of the amazing sounding drinks, my husband asked Fletch for a recommendation. After asking us a few questions, he departed saying "I think I have something you'll like". Moments later, he returned with Connor, the bartender, and two "sample" cocktails for us to try... how amazing! The drink was wonderful, and we ordered two. Out waiter, Alex, gave us recommendations on the menu, and we decided on the ricotta and the pate (not exactly sure about the pate... it was a strong drink!) for appetizers, and for entrees, my husband had the lamb special, and I ordered the scallops. Everything was out of this world, especially my scallops, which were possibly the best I've ever had. We were too stuffed for dessert, so we just asked for the the check. However, my husband had mentioned earlier to Connor that it was our anniversary, so we were presented with a box of amazing chocolate chip cookies to take back to our hotel. I can't say enough good things about our experience at The Amsterdam. The ambiance, the care with regard to safety, the inventive and delicious food and cocktails were all outstanding. We went during the weekend of the Food and Wine Festival so it was super busy. We didn't have reservations but waited only 30 min. For starters we got Burrata and from the main dishes Potatoes Gnocchi and Orecchiette. All dishes were excellent with nice flavors, but our favorite was the burrata and it's combination of sweatiness, freshness, and uniqueness. As for dessert, we opted for their special: a gâteau basque, which is a buttery almond-flavored cake filled with a layer of pastry cream. While it was nicely presented, the flavor was only ok, nothing "special". The service besides our waiter (who didn't show much interest) was great! Not good. We just went for brunch, and right away, it's obvious that the service is very friendly and helpful which was really nice, but NONE of the service or indeed any of the staff were wearing masks. They're handling food, I don't think it's a lot to ask. Both the indoor and outdoor areas are charming and well laid out, so either option is a good choice. The problem is the kitchen and the expediting. We ordered Bloody Marys and they were almost undrinkable because of how much coarse black pepper is in them. The flavor is okay, but there must be almost a tablespoon of very coarse pepper that you try to avoid chewing on. The Eggs Benedict was alright but the bottom was soggy which indicates that it sat for too long. The French Toast was extremely sweet and again, a bit soggy, but tasty and served with real maple syrup. I ordered the shakshuka, which was god awful. Perhaps the worst shakshuka that I've ever had and was cold. The "shakshuka" part was basically a few cooked tomato chunks and roasted red pepper chunks. The two eggs on top were overcooked to the point that the top was a gross egg film. The "grilled" bread that came with it was so underdone that there were barely grill marks. I asked politely if I could get bread that was more grilled; it took way too long for it to get to me, so much so that everyone else was halfway through their meal. When I got the new "grilled" bread, it was basically untoasted, so I don't know if it was an insult from the chef or what happened, but I just ate a piece, the non-gross part of the eggs, and shut up. We also ordered a side of bacon for the table which was $8 and received maybe 4 slices cut in half that were again soggy and rubbery. Also, even the coffee had grounds in every cup, and we had to ask for refills on both coffee and water. It's a cute spot, but none of us are ever coming back and I do not recommend going there when there are so many better places nearby. read more

This place! THIS PLACE. Let me tell you, food wise, it represented our weekend stay in Rhinebeck. Mostly because we visited twice. But having frequented this joint for two different meals (and of course ordered the same tequila cocktail for both brunch and dinner), I can confidently say it will NOT disappoint you. Waiter was passionate to discuss our liking of the knives show with him. The Oh No tequila cocktail was perfectly smoky and sweet and completely hit the spot each of the three times I ordered one. Dinner was delish - we especially loved Future Husband's meat dish with the speckl bread bits you threw into the sauce. Best friend and I just ate them plain! Best friend got a delectable pasta dish with calamari and my roasted chicken came with delicious pancetta. Giada Di Laurentis (sp?) could never. If you go for brunch, definitely order the pastry starter. You'll love the chocolate croissant - Future Husband and I decided it was the best thing we ate the entire trip - and James loved the cheesy biscuit. I tried some and it was indeed good. Be careful with the Shakshuka if you don't like spice. I can normal handle a fair amount, but even this was a lot for me. I like to be able to taste my eggs. Having the bread as a buffer is nice though. One of my favorite things about this place is that Waiter was quick to recommend his competitor restaurants in the area that he thought we'd love based on the thrill we exuded for our meals. He even swung by our table to say hi a few times when we returned for brunch later in the weekend and we're not seated in his section!
