We had quite the eventful day of biking and bopping around in heavy rain, so when we found this restaurant near our Airbnb we were more than thrilled. Of course we cleaned up and walked over and were even more thrilled when we arrived to a completely empty dining room with the exception of our wonderful waiter and attentive host. It felt like the perfect, cozy intimate space to the end of an otherwise rainy, somewhat crazy but fun day. We shared a bottle of red on recommendation and had cocktails. The waiter was warm and knowledgeable. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The ambiance is cozy and has an elevated feel. Service was exceptional and it was the perfect, memorable evening. Ended dinner with what I recall was a complimentary chocolate truffle. 10/10! read more

People are kvetching about Butterfield's service and prices. And guess what? They're right. Service was indeed spotty on the Saturday night we came here and prices- well....they veer into sharp-intake-of-breath territory, but the cocktail and wine list are good in value. We'd just wrapped up seeing a property in the area- so coming here for dinner, fell just in line with timing before heading down home. Butterfield is Hasbrouck House's on-site farm-to-table restaurant located a bit north from New Paltz. While we didn't stay at the hotel, folks can certainly dine here. Don't even think that you'll be seated in an ultra-cheap bar area because their bar is put together elegantly with brushed, brassy-gold touches, navy, grey+cream patterned wallpaper and a comfortable tufted leather(?) sofa against the windows.Those are pretty much the overall touches with lots of tone and a lot of warmth. Music was a great mix of 60s-70s R&B. Yeah.... here. Hubs and I were digging it. Naturally, Butterfield's menu will change regularly according with what's in season and available. Between our 'Small Plates' of mixed Beet salad+ yogurt ($18) and hubs' crispy wonton Tuna Crudo+ yuzu tacos ($22)- they were very tasty and pricy for the small size. Mr. Mixologist packed our cocktails extremely well with an incredible TKO. Our main plates were very good- but again, small for the dollar amount. No one needs to gorge on food- but I wished my palm-size $44 Halibut was a bit bigger. To their defense, it had a tasty rub and done PERFECTLY moist though. Hubs' $54 "dry aged strip loin" was a total of 3 pieces. And my take-out Truffle Risotto had uncooked rice. Again, it's small and expensive at $38 for a main plate Hubs and I eat well and usually, money is no object- if it's within reason. I totally get that fine dining typically means splurging a little for high-quality items or that Butterfield is using 'complex cooking techniques' or that you'll get an original dining experience in these neck of the woods for those who want uniqueness. But there are a ton of restaurants that use the same skill set, quality organic ingredients, root veggies, etc- and they're way more reasonably priced than this location. read more

I was excited to take her back for our Anniversary, but I was a bit hesitant after reading some of the reviews on here regarding the service. Let me tell you, the service was great! The food was fantastic. A small menu, but everything was prepared excellently. my wife had the cavatelli and thought it was amazing. the only thing that I wouldn't order again is the Pilsner Battered Cauliflower with a Chipotle Glaze. Not because its wasn't good, but simply because it was cauliflower and I am not a fan. It was prepared incredibly well though, and my wife enjoyed it. The Ambiance is cozy and intimate and we had a fantastic time. We will be back again. I would recommend updating the menu that is on the website as it was not in line with the menu at the table, but that is a minor inconvenience and makes sense as everything is farm to table and changes rapidly. read more

When we first walked in, we were like uh are we in the right place and are they open? I guess we booked one of the first reservations and were eating very early! There wasn't a single thing that was a let down on the menu. Everything we ordered was excellent. The kale salad was very good, and I would highly recommend ordering the cheese plate. Our waiter was awesome and even brought us a few extra crostinis. For my entree, I ordered the trout that came with snow peas and mushrooms. Mmmmmmm soooo good. The meal just kept getting better and better. For dessert I ordered a scoop of ice cream and the toffee pudding. Yum! We were staying in Poughkeepsie so Butterfield was a little out of the way, but I would drive back here in a heartbeat. It's that good. The one small complaint I had was that outside next to the road was a little loud. You can't fault the restaurant for that and you also can't beat the nice ambiance of being outdoors. read more

Food is fairly overpriced for the area but generally of good quality. Drinks are also pricey but well made. Setting is nice. Gets a mostly city crowd on weekends for dinner. I generally only come for the burger and beer special on Wednesday nights and sit at the bar. That special is excellent and affordable (compared to the rest of their menu). and they do it really well. My one real issue with this place is they sometimes close their kitchen early without any notice and don't always pick up the phone so you can't call in advance to check. So, I driven there 3 times now only to find that their kitchen was already closed before their posted hours. When they keep their posted hours, they're great. James the bartender is great. read more

We were guests at the Hasbrouck House celebrating our 20 year wedding anniversary We had a 7:30 reservation To make a long story short, after being told multiple times that we will be seated in 20 minutes, at 8:15 we were told it would be yet another 20 minutes and by the way the kitchen is backed up so would likely take another 30 minutes to get our food, meaning we wouldn't have our first bite of food until after 9:00 for our 7:30 reservation. The restaurant was beautiful and we heard the food was good, but we never got to eat there... management needs to 1. Hire enough staff 2. Train them appropriately and 3. My boyfriend and I dined here twice while we were staying at Hasbrouck House. The staff was attentive and polite. The first night they were very quick, the 2nd night was a bit slower service due to it being a weekend. I started with a martini with bleu cheese olives. It was absolutely delicious and perfectly balanced. I ordered the paella which was an generous portion and tasted delicious. My boyfriend got the venison, which was delicious, but a small portion. My husband and I are staying in Hasbrouck House and the July 4 weekend. We had dinner at Butterfield on the 4th, the restaurant is located on the ground letter of the house - which is great - so that we can literally walk down the stairs from our room. Food is super fresh and very farm-to-table style. Service is great too! We requested for outdoor seating and our dinner time was 6:30pm - which is nice because we can still enjoy the sun and also not too hot! My husband ordered the chicken and I had the duck - as always, I liked his dish more!! lol - the chicken is incredibly crispy and moist and soft and fresh! Delicious!!! read more

Unbelievable meal at Butterfield. I'm not sure why this place does not have a higher rating. The food was superb, the ambiance was darling and the staff were spectacular. We sat outdoors and they had heat lamps which were perfect. You feel like you are in your best friend's backyard garden, in the best way. The inside decor is just as fabulous but didn't spend much time inside, because, COVID. But when this is all over, I can see how guests / diners would enjoy the little touches they have everywhere from the wallpaper to their carefully curated finishes. We started with Sancerre and Jungle Bird. The Sancerre was very, very good. They followed our drinks with complimentary bread which was a great way to start off the meal. We also had the cheese plate which was divine...the cheese was the perfect temperature and the crackers were delicious. We both had the celery leek soup which was very good followed by our entrees for which we ordered the scallops and lamb shank. The entrees were delicious and very rich. The flavor combinations are outstanding so hats off to the chef. We finished with the pudding and apple crumb because, well, we couldn't decide between the two. Wow, what a way to end the meal on a high note. If I would choose a dessert to have AGAIN it would be the apple crumb just because it is a tiny bit less sweet. So we FINALLY got around to using our gift card to Butterfield that I won from a very generous Yelp Hudson Valley Restaurant Week giveaway in *ahem* March. However, even though the gift card had been languishing in my wallet for a literal rainy day, I'm so glad we finally redeemed it tonight with what was an excellent meal at Butterfield! The restaurant is nestled inside the Hasbrouck House, which appears to be a high-end inn. It was pretty dark and stormy when we got here for dinner, so I didn't get a great look at the grounds, but there was ample outdoor patio seating, and an attached "carriage house" section of the hotel, which looked like a next-level Air BNB or something. Maybe we'll do a stay-cation in the future! I'm intrigued, to say the least. Butterfield is a cozy farm to table style joint that focuses on an ever-changing menu that showcases the bounty of local produce, game, and more. We got to try their Fall menu, which is limited but full of tasty options. I was a bit wary when we were coming here because of mixed reviews from other users, but our experience was good overall, and I would give them another visit! The atmosphere is decidedly romantic - it seems like everyone thought that Sunday night was perfect for date night, and the dining room was filled with couples. Candlelight tables, handsome wood detailing, and comfortable two-top tables make for nice surroundings that are very much worth the price tag! Each meal starts off with complimentary focaccia bread from the kitchen, served on a stone slab with some lava salt sprinkled butter. It was very tasty and we wanted more, but I also wish the bread was warm. At such a fancy restaurant, warm bread really would have started the meal off on an exceptional note. We enjoyed our drinks, though. I got a ginger mocktail, and my boyfriend tried the hard cider, which was a bit too dry for my taste, but he loved it. I was starving after our long drive, so I ended up also ordering a bowl of Cauliflower Gruyere Soup, which was creamy and comforting, and served with some crispy chickpeas on top to give it some much needed texture. Soon after, our entrees appeared: a fork-tender Short Rib with mashed potatoes and haricot vert, and a beautifully plated Magret Duck Breast with sautéed kale and farro salad and grilled pear. I really enjoyed the hearty meat n' potatoes dish, and the duck was also awesome (I did sneak a bite off my boyfriend's plate!) The real highlight of the meal was our dessert, though. The Butterscotch Pudding was a great end to our night, and provided a not-too-sweet finish to a stellar evening. The pudding was creamy and flavorful, and had a layer of fresh caramel and sea salt, topped with whipped creme fraiche. The best part was the caramel corn which garnished the dish. The plating was lovely, and will make for a great post for my food Instagram soon! I'm so glad we finally got a chance to dine here. The service was good for the most part - shoutout to the host for being warm and welcoming when we arrived. I will agree with some other reviewers that the meal did feel rushed at times, but we were pretty hungry, so I didn't exactly mind a whole lot. I look forward to coming back here later this winter to check out the bar menu (that burger looks rad), and the $35 pre-fixe menu they'll be rolling out on Sunday evenings! This is one of the best farm to table dining experiences I've had in New York, and I'm happy to have found a new favorite! read more

This place was amazing. My friend and I wanted to find a place to have outdoor dining in winter (due to COVID). We spent the day snowshoeing so we were already dressed for the elements and this we chose Butterfield's cauldron bar. The fires were cozy and a gentleman ensured all the fires stayed warm throughout our visit (they also had blankets if needed). We ordered 4 appetizers (two of the beer battered cauliflower, one order of sishito peppers, and the fondue). They came out warm and were the perfect end our winter day. I highly recommend the fondue. We also had a couple of their hot cocktails as well. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly as was the gentleman who tended our fire. They staff was great about COVID policies. Literally the best COVID restaurant I've encountered yet. read more

Came here a year ago, had a terrible experience dining with a large group. Went back last night, and again won't be going back anytime soon. You can't charge NYC prices for sub par food and terrible service. I don't go out to be spoken down to with micro aggressions by a so called manager (Eddie) the minute I have an issue with my order (entree was cold/ not what the menu said it was) and be schooled in a very condescending way. Just left Butterfield and have not felt so disrespected or talked down to after leaving a bar in quite some time. Went for my usual hang with a friend but instead had the entire evening end on the note of a condescending manager who decided to talk down to her patrons. I question if a similar response would have happened if I was there like I normally am with my kid, hanging out and drinking lemonade. Unfortunately it was just me and a friend watching basketball. Maybe with guests of the hotel she can get away with telling off the people she dislikes (since they probably won't be back), but she may possibly take a second to think about how some locals come here too. My mother and I came to visit Butterfield as guests at the hotel, Hasbrouck House. Both came highly recommended from a friend who visited during the summer. Uh oh. So, in deference to the Butterfield, we had a weather forecast just short of armageddon today. They may have been downstaffed. We called, however, to make sure that the restaurant was still open as the weather had not started yet and we had a reservation. After a bit of back and forth on the phone due to a bit of a language barrier, we were told that they were opened and that the time of our reservation would be the final seating for the day. Fair enough. We decided to go, as we live just fifteen minutes away. We arrived to find just one other party. Our host and waiter was lovely and got right to drinks. Appreciated. We ordered and soaked in a bit of the ambience. The restaurant and the historic Hasbrouck House hotel, in which Butterfield is located, are beautifully renovated. We perused the brunch menu, which is brief. Straightforward, reliable brunch choices. "Good," I thought, "they should be perfectly prepared." We ordered. Food arrived. Eggs Benedict for me, which were good, though I could not discern how the tomato included in the description was a "sweet and sour" tomato, as the menu described. It was a good, fresh tomato, but nothing more. For my husband, a burger. He requested rare and received well done. Brown through and through without a whiff of pink, much less red. His accompanying cubed, sauteed potatoes were undercooked. Hard in the middle of the larger pieces. The ones on my plate, however, were interestingly not undercooked. In all, disappointing. What could have been a cozy, quiet brunch on a white winter afternoon was not. I would have so much rather they just told us they were closed. read more

My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Butterfield. I'm very happy we chose to dine here. The food was fantastic but above all, their service was impeccable. The maitre d' was so warm and wished us a happy anniversary upon arrival and regularly checked on us. Our waiter was so sweet and patient with us while we figured out what to eat and which bottle of wine to order. The food was absolutely delicious and portions were generous! We started with the Pilsner-Battered Cauliflower, Smoked Trout Rillettes, and Lacinato Kale Salad. My husband had the Braised Smoked Short Rib as an entree, "this is the best short rib I've ever had" - the man is hard to please so this meant a lot! I enjoyed the Orecchiette. For desert we shared the Ice Cream Sundae. The ambiance was warm and inviting. It made for a very romantic evening. I would also like to add that not once did we have to refill our own water or wine, not that we need someone to do it for us but it's a true sign of stellar service. The entire wait staff was attentive without smothering our quiet evening. We visited Butterfield in September and I still remember every detail of our evening - they made a special evening memorable. Fantastic food in a fun historic building. We stopped by for dinner with a last-minute reservation and we really enjoyed our evening. Everyone tried something different from the menu and no one was disappointed. Service was very good and the dining area was comfortable. We were initially concerned as we weren't really dressed for dinner out but we ate fairly late and the restaurant had mostly cleared out. The server and maître d both recommended pasta dishes, which were very good but my favorite dish was the local trout, prepared with a beurre blanc and wild mushrooms and garnished with fish roe. Delicate but flavorful, it was the nicest trout I have been served in years. Drinks and sides were very much appreciated as well. I would personally have preferred crusty bread to focaccia but that's a small quibble. Would definitely return. read more

We were ignored after our meals came and had to literally knock on the porch window to get the server's attention. Keep in mind that there were maybe three other people in the restaurant at this time. Re the food, the cauliflower app was outstanding, the chicken wings were too salty and could only eat 4 of the 6. The tuna tacos were so salty that they were inedible. To their credit, they took it off the bill. Celebrating an anniversary while stoned and hungry was a pleasure at Butterfield. We were given a corner booth table next to the fireplace in the simple, swanky dining room. The service was excellent, but a little slow, allowing us to take our time and enjoy every delicious bite. The bread starter...omg. The bread was flaky, crunchy, moist and warm all at the same time. The room temp butter with flaky salt served with it was perfection. Our appetizers of octopus, cauliflower and burrata were plate lickers, each bite more delicious than the last. Our entrees were the pesto cavatelli and the sirloin. The sirloin was a bit small and a smidge overdone for the person who likes their meat rare, but it was still delicious. Never ones to skip dessert if there's room in the dessert stomach, we ordered the sticky pudding and the chocolate mousse. This meal was YUMM-o! We sat for an early bird dinner at 5:30 and left around 8:30, stuffed and satisfied. We highly recommend this dining experience. There's also a hotel attached that we hope to stay at one day. Way overpriced. Food wasn't bad but overall not great. The foie gras was just oddly unset. I don't know if they poached it or cured it but it was poorly sliced and had been sitting out for way way too long. Felt extremely rushed besides that. We arrive at 8:30 and our entrees were gone by 9:30. Also, the waitress dropped dessert menus while two people were still eating their entrees?? That's inappropriate and made my guests feel as though they were eating slowly. Overall mediocre food and terrible service. If not for the absurdly high forced 20% gratuity I don't think much of a tip would have been left at all. Edit: It dawned on me (and I triple checked) - absolutely nowhere does it state that an automatic 20% tip would be added to the bill for parties of any size, simply doing it without any warning is unprofessional and wrong. read more
