There are times when you can tell that a person I'd a good person. There are also times that you can tell they they're not a good person, and all you see is fake. That's what the people that own animal house are like. When you first walk in, you're greeted by an overwhelming animal stench, and a friendly enough face. I will be honest. I groomed at animal house for about two months. The first day that I was there, the lady owner literally screamed at the dog. I've worked at other pet stores, and this one was one of the worst for knowledge about animals. Several times I found myself educating the owners of this establishment about the animals they "care for". The only reason I would personally purchase anything from animal house is for feeder mice and rats because of PetSmarts policy about not selling live feeders. I don't recommend this place. read more

Perhaps they are the friendliest people in Richmond. They are very knowledgeable. I don't know what these other reviews are talking about. Yes, the place smell like a pet store with birds, cats and dogs. Who figures. If you own a bunch of pets your house smell like that too; you just don't know it. My son bought a snake their. And it is alive and well. No problems. read more

I purchased a ferret from The Animal House two years ago out of pity. She was clearly ill, covered in feces and did not have proper food or a water bowl. She also did not have any toys in her cage and was kept in the back of the store where quite frankly it's filthy--loud, smelly, and hard to breathe! I didn't want her to suffer any longer there so I purchased her and took her to the vet as soon as I could. She had a prolapsed rectum and it cost me nearly $1000 in medical expenses to get her well again. I am happy to say that she is happy and healthy and doing well now, but I am disgusted by the horrible lack of care the animals there receive. Please do not support their business. They purchase puppies, kittens, and rabbits from backyard breeders/mills/irresponsible people and they do just enough to keep the animals alive so they can sell them and make a profit. It's really sickening and I have attempted to report them/file a claim/complaint with the Better Business Bureau but they are not registered with the BBB and you have to be registered in the first place for someone to file a claim or make a complaint. read more

We dropped her off for just a couple of days while we went on a trip. We explained to them that she had just had surgery a week ago and they promised us they would take special care of her. When we got back to pick her up, it was Horrible. She was soaked in her own Urine and smelled horrible. We had to wear our masks in the car to get her home. The vet had told us to keep her stitches dry and that she could not have a bath for at least another week. We had no choice. We had to bathe her twice so she could come back into the house. She was so pitiful. She did not deserve this treatment. I've never been so upset at a kennel in all my life and we will never take her back there again!!!

The staff was so friendly and of course Shadow was his charming self until it came to the exam lol. They were gentle with him and gave him plenty of treats afterwards . His Doctor was friendly and very enthusiastic about Shadow being in such good shape . He has nice teeth , clean ears, clear lungs . Knowing all of this made me relax more. He got a clean bill of health with the exception that he's FIV positive. Shadow is the only cat in our house and he's strictly a indoor cat. Even with that he can and will live a full life . One of the ladies did agree with me that he looks like he's part Russian Blue. In terms of cost the initial exam was free because we adopted him from LHS . I did pay for some additional testing and I think it was a fair price . Shadow does have pet insurance for those just in case moments hopefully they'll be none of those. Shadow will continue to to there for check ups and future shots .

My beagle, Thea, has completed two classes so far: the Manners Matter foundational training class and Intro to Scent Work. She is about to begin Advanced Scent Work, and she has also participated in the Canine Performance Club where we work on training homework, build conditioning and fitness, and introduce her to different performance sports. What stands out most about Manners Matter is their training philosophy. The environment is supportive and fear free, the classes are intentionally small, and the trainers are knowledgeable professionals who truly put the dogs' wellbeing first. They also take the time to explain the "why" behind the training, which has helped me become a better handler and better understand how my dog learns. One thing I especially appreciate is that Manners Matter focuses on building a strong foundation in dog training rather than rushing ahead and setting dogs and their owners up for frustration or failure. That thoughtful approach makes a huge difference and you can clearly see it in the confidence and progress the dogs develop over time. I have a beagle, and scent hounds can be independent thinkers that easily get themselves into trouble without the right structure and training. When I tell people I have a beagle, the common reaction is often "I could never have a beagle because they're loud, stubborn, and don't listen." I love when people meet Thea and see what consistent training can accomplish. My response is always that you get out of the situation what you put into it. Thea has had an incredibly positive experience in both obedience training and scent work classes, and I've watched her grow into a confident, well balanced dog. She is only a year and a half old and the progress she has made has been amazing. Good dog trainers you can trust with the care of your dog are not easy to find. I drive 45 minutes to attend classes at Manners Matter and it is absolutely worth it for the peace of mind and quality of training we receive. My goal is to be able to take Thea anywhere and know she has the temperament and skills to handle those environments, and this training has played a huge role in making that possible.
