We weren't really sure what to expect when we brought our hyper 1 year old Australian Labradoodle to Animal Keepers for training, but we ended up being very happy with the results. After 15 lessons with Rurik, our dog is much easier to take on walks as he now sits on command and walks by our side, rather than running ahead and pulling violently on the leash. He is also getting better when he sees other dogs, and is not jumping up on people as much as he used to. Rurik's caring nature and calm demeanor really helped instill this change. He also was very good about carefully explaining our dog's progress; including sending videos and giving our children and us notes on what to do at home. (It's important for everyone to be on the same page and to keep the training up if you really want to see results.) We definitely recommend Rurik to anyone who wants to gain more control over their rambunctious pup! read more

I routinely have my dogs do day care there, they are sensitive to their special needs and have always been accommodating even if I call at the last minute. Kudos for their groomer, she knows my dog cannot be lifted onto a table for grooming and instead gets on the floor to accommodate my old lady. read more

This place was great, but the wait time was terrible. I took 30 minutes just to get my dog checked out. The service wasn't the best, but the people who worked there all seemed like they loved dogs, so I wasn't worried that anything would happen to my pup. I love that there were toys and treats in the front so that I didn't have to turn back around and go home to get my dog some when I forgot them. There are many options to choose from in terms of add-ons to your dog's stay. Also, the grooming was about average; I gave them flea medication and asked them to put it on, and they forgot to, despite the fact that they put in a note for it. Also, they mentioned that my pup was aggressive, even though he wasn't aggressive with other groomers, so that makes me worried that they were rough handling him a little too hard. He had his own little room with a TV. I paid for him to have play dates with other dogs, and I wish I got to see photos of that! Overall, it was an average experience. read more

My golden retriever Molly loves this place. This facility has a really nice outdoor play area for the dogs and in the summer when it's hot they provide pools for the dogs. Molly comes home tired and happy. Plus they have grooming which is nice. read more

I have used The Encinitas Animal Keeper a few times in the past for boarding services and have always been more than satisfied. For the first time I used their bathing and grooming services. It was a very pleasant experience. My dog Kilo is a 10 year old Chow Chow, and he always fusses when we bathe him at home or at the self-wash . He barely sits still long enough for us to get him through a basic (but not thorough)wash. Always very anxious. Tony and the groomers did such a great job! I have never seen my dog look this good! He was so clean, his nails were all trimmed, they cut some matting out of a couple of spots, trimmed his fur in all the right places, got his ears cleaned out, and his paws looked great too! Special Thanks to Tony, who was so professional, friendly, and nice enough to go the extra mile for my dog and I. My dog Roscoe has been know to show completely out when he has to go to the vet or the groomers. However, here at The Animal Keeper, they manage put his fears at bay and get him looking like a fabulous dog. I use a couple locations for my dog depending upon my work locations. I've been using The Animal Keeper in Encinitas for about 6 months now. Love this place. My dog goes 1-2 times every couple weeks for day camp. He loves it. The place is clean, and the staff are incredibly friendly. They may not always understand the computer system, but they are great with animals and always polite when helping me. I don't know if it's the same manager from other reviews, but the lady now is great! She knows me and my dog and is always helpful and friendly. You just know she's an animal person! I used the overnight services 3 times now, and loved combining it with the day camp. So my dog got plently of exercise and comfortable rest. I'm a little jealous that he gets a message and tuck-in service on his overnights! :) Worse thing is I have to drop him off by 9:30 am ... neither of us are morning people :). And he does comes back to me a little more vocal with the barking, but then usually settles back down to his quiet self. All in all not really something worth complaining about. I like them so much I even tried their trainer recommendation, Cathy Myer...fantastic! Very happy with this place. read more

We moved into the area last year, and I started a search for a place to board my dog and cat. After doing some research, I went to tour Animal Keeper in Encinitas. I was very impressed with the facility. It was clean and the kennels were a nice size for the dogs. The employees were friendly. Our only reservation was the high rates they charge on the ala carte menu of activities. But hey, we love our pets and want the best for them. The first time we boarded our dog, all seemed fine, except they double charged our credit card. The second time, we were charged for a suite, when our dog was in the regular kennel. The third and fourth time were horrible in that our dog did NOT want to go inside. He kept trying to run from the employee and had his tail between his legs. We have never seen him behave that way before. Needless to say, he will never go back. In the meantime, we also boarded our cat. Suddenly they want a note from the vet saying that our 13 year old cat is healthy enough to be boarded. So you know what that means? Now we have to pay for an office visit at the vet, on top of the boarding costs, even though she got a clean bill of health at her yearly visit six months ago and is up to date on her inoculations. I now have found a wonderful place for our dog and will start looking for another place for our cat. read more

This was my dog's first boarding experience. He was definitely tired, but not sure about the level of care.. We picked him up at 7 am. It was clear he had not yet been taken out to go to the bathroom. They assured me he ate, but when he got home he drank an entire bowl and a half of water. He is a labradoodle with a longer coat. It was clear there had been water play, which is fine but he had the beginning of an ear infection because no one had dried his ears. I can also understand the complaints about the grooming after boarding. If my dog had stayed an extra day, he would have been a matted mess. That is not something that should happen in two days of play. We won't be back and o cannot recommend. read more

We used the AK a few times to trim our dogs nails. Usually it was a 5 minute deal, just bring our dogs in the back, get the nails done, wham bam thank you ma'am. When we called last week, the new receptionist insisted that we drop off our dogs at 9 am for the whole day to get their nails trimmed. She couldn't get her head around the fact that trimming our dogs nails isn't an all day affair. It's almost like she didn't want our business. Well thank you AK, we ended up calling Dogs N Suds and got the nails and teeth done in 10 minutes. We didn't need an appointment, vaccination records, and didn't have a snooty receptionist giving us attitude. Kind of like AK used to be! read more

I boarded my dog and she has a life threatening inflammatory bowel disease. I paid an additional fee to ensure she was fed food that I provided-raw patties. When I picked her up, she vomited kibble. I confronted the staff and they denied feeding her anything outside of what I provided. We never returned. read more

Our dog lives day camp here! We have been taking our dog Ernie to the Animal Keeper in Encinitas since she was 4 months old and she loves it. She cannot contain her excitement when she arrives and often doesn't want to leave at the end of the day. Went here with a Livingsocial deal to have my 8 lb dog washed, brushed and nail clipped. This place is a SCAM. They charged me an extra $10 for my dog breed?! My dog is a mutt from the Humane Society. This is bait and switch. I'll be filing a complaint. To make matters worse they didn't go a good job. My dog's nail were jagged and sharp...I had to file them when I got home. She also still had some eye goop left in one eye. Never going back here and telling everyone I know to avoid. read more

I brought my dog in about once a week for day camp for 6 months or so, until I moved. She loved it and would be exhausted when I picked her up, and that made it well worth the $25 it cost for each day. I haven't been back in a few months, and came in today to see if I could transfer the 1 remaining day camp credit I had in my account to my boss, who goes takes her dog there. I was told, under no circumstances, no. Which doesn't make sense to me. I didn't ask for a refund, or to transfer the credit to a different location. I think it is very bad customer service (and it was the manager who turned me down). It was not an unreasonable request. So, positives for the front desk people who work there, even though I only came in once a week they got to know me and my dog. I think they are very competent. A BIG NEGATIVE to their manager. She is not accommodating at all, and comes off as rude. I have witnessed other interactions she has had with clients. I am sure I'm not the only one with this impression of her. Additionally, I noticed that their prices have gone up at the Encinitas location, but not at the Oceanside location. It also kind of irks me that they charge extra for every little thing, whether having my dog eat her own food from home, to dispensing meds. Personally, I won't be going back to the Encinitas location. read more

Buyer beware!!! Animal Keeper is running a bait and switch operation. There should be a zero-star option. After posting a positive Yelp comment with the promise of 20% off my bill after post, I'm afraid I must amend my comments. I typically receive a discount for double occupancy for my 2 large dogs, to stay in what I'm sure is one much too small kennel, given their size. Upon pickup today, I was denied this discount because I was being given the "yelp" discount. The yelp discount was supposed to be 20% off my entire bill, but using clever math, only amounted to $100 dollars. I only noticed after I was home reviewing the bill. No mention, upon drop off they neglected to tell us that only 1 discount would be honored. If that were the case, I would have requested my dogs each have their own kennel space. I'm feeling completely ripped-off by what appears to be some shady business practices. Not to mention the prices are already outrageous. After reading some of the other posts, it appears I'm not the only one to have had issues with this place. At this point, I'll be searching for a new kennel. This is far too expensive for my dogs to be locked in a tiny astroturf jungle for any length of time. read more

Animal Keeper is a great place to leave your pet for boarding or play time. We take our chocolate lab, Duncan, to day camp at Animal Keeper and I can tell he plays all day because he's completely exhausted when I pick him up. Duncan gets so excited about going that he whines the whole way there, and sleeps the whole way back :) The staff is extremely friendly, and the hours for drop off and pick up are really flexible, which makes it ideal for dropping him off on the way to work and picking him up on the way back. read more

I took my little fur daughter to Animal Keeper and no complaints, except they do have the cages. I was spoiled with the Camp Run A Mutt with the cage free environment. Also they should not charge you for bringing your own dog food. My dog has allergies to a lot of wheat products and a sensitive stomach. They did a great job on trimming her nails. My job moved me a little farther away from The Animal Keeper in Encinitas, so I am going to another location. read more
