Boy was i impressed, from the dimmed lights, the booth seating, mixologist doing their thing. I was pretty happy. We got seated immediately. I ordered a drink they no longer make from Yelp pictures, they were able to create one that was very similar and it's was delicious. We ordered the duck poutine and it was delicious. Overall: Food overall is fine, but I'd recommend coming here for drinks and apps vs a whole meal. Location: Most seating here is for two. We were a group of 4 and had to wait a while given the limited options (there are only a handful of booths). So don't come if you have a big group. The drink menu, though, is super fun and always changing with the season (they had a whole holiday menu for the month of December, for example). Base camp max and cheese - outside of of the breadcrumbs, I'd pass on this dish. The sauce was super watery and taste a little processed. Duck poutine - If this poutine (nice amount of gravy and cheese) joined forces with the Wurstbar poutine (better fries and cheese curds but pretty dry), you would have the perfect dish. Still, I'd say this was good. Venison cheesesteak - Cheesesteak was pretty good, but the bun was a little too soft to hold up the meat. I'd swap the bun out, but it was fine. The Archer is a great spot for trying some uniquely crafted cocktails in downtown Jersey City. The bar gives off speakeasy vibes, with dimly lit Edison bulbs, rustic decor and antler chandeliers. On Sundays, they have an alternative cocktail menu that's tiki themed. They are mostly rum-based cocktails, but they do have a few other alternatives. Came here for a cute dinner with a friend on a Sunday night. We ordered: Pimms Cup - great! Mint Julep - felt heavier on the ice than alcohol, good otherwise. Decent happy hour drink prices, but no happy hour food prices. The food was just okay. We had the Brussels sprouts, dry aged burger, and pretzel. All just mediocre. The pretzel wasn't too soft and was very salty. The burger came with 3-5 chips, and the Brussels sprouts lacked flavor. Conclusion: The Archer is great for drinks, just eat elsewhere. read more

A romantic ambient setting with some alright cocktails. Stopped by here for some drinks after dinner. Seemed very quiet from the outside but upon entry your experience is completely transformed. A nice dark ambient with good music. They had a good selection of cocktails and I'd said it's above average. Definitely better than many other spots in a 3 blocks radius. Met up with a couple of friends here and had a great time. It was a little too loud for properly catching up, but the drinks & food were great. Honestly? Not 100% sure of what was on our plate because I couldn't hear. Despite the music being 70s vintage, it was rather loud. I know one was a sopresatta. I had wanted the smoked duck breast but they were out of that and the smoked duck poutine. I have to say that the meats and cheeses were out of this world. We had some fun holiday cocktails. Someone took our order while we were standing at the high tops which was nice. There is also an area with booths for those who plan on having dinner. I honestly didn't know what to expect, but loved it at first bite! The elk meat was gamier than normal meat (in a more flavorful and good way). And there was a good amount of kick to it. The spicy tomato sauce, the bed of cheese polenta topped with kale, pepper and perfectly crispy onion all complimented the meatballs well! My only complain is that the portion is on the smaller side - I wanted more even after licking the whole plate clean! Lol Pheasant & Cherry Creste di Gallo - unfortunately this dish is a bit of disappointment. It's mostly just Creste di Gallo with a measly amount of tiny bits of pheasant meat playing hide and seek. The beet cherry purée is an interesting idea - while it definitely brighten up the plate visually, the taste however didn't go too well with the other ingredients of the dish. What stood out the most to me is the duck poutine fries. They're definitely generous with the duck, whereas most places wouldn't be. For entree my bf and I split the duck burger and were really excited for it but the texture was kinda weird and the taste was nothing special. It also was smaller than expected for something on the entree side of the menu and not small plate side. The other people we were with got the wings and waffle and loved them, so maybe we just chose our course poorly. Romantic date night spot located in the heart of JC. The Archer is a small space but has so much character. On a Thursday night there was a live band playing and I love live music so this was definitely a treat. The bartender Wilson never fails with his expertly crafted cocktails. He always hits the Old Fashioned out of the park. It's so fragrant with the peel and the right ingredients. I also tried the meat and cheese platter for a snack. I've honestly had better. I ordered soppressa, sheep cheese, and a few more I can't think off the top of my head. It was all ok, nothing special. The bread that came along with the platter wasn't great either. Decided on this location while reading through reviews in the area. Laid back intimate dining spot, dim low lighting, christmas decor & friendly staff. Upon entering, was seated right away for a table for two. On the table was the Winter Wonderland holiday drink & the Spare Change drink. The holiday drink was very ginger but the drink hit, as for the other drink it tasted very refreshing but nothing else. Switched over to an old fashioned. I ordered the Mac & Cheese with added bacon made well done. This dish was tasty & filling the bread crumbs that it's top with, I do have to say are pretty hard to chew. The pretzel cheese steak sandwich was not all that in my opinion, I did take a tasting bite. The steak gets lost in the flavors of the onions and spices, so it just taste like an onion sandwich. Over time the spot did start to get packed, I'm not sure if there's a bar/party area but I do see this as a dining location. I don't mind coming again to try other dishes. read more

Really liked this place. The smaller size, the way the bar's set up, the cocktail choices, and the darker lighting give it a speakeasy vibe. I loved that the menu reflected the restaurant's archer/hunter theme -- it's pretty gamey, with choices ranging from venison to wild boar. That being said, this place isn't for everyone -- definitely check out the menu before coming. I played it on the safer side with the beef ragu, which was good but, unfortunately, a little bland (hence the four stars). My group started with a charcuterie plate, which was delicious, and the chicken liver pate, also good (just not really my thing). I saw a lot of reviews noted that the cocktail menu was limited, but I think that's something to expect with a place like this. I thought the list was great, and they have an $8 happy hour from 5-7 called "Workman's Comp" that included a fair range of options. My number one complaint is this restaurant is way too dark, when we took out our phones to use as light, our waitress didn't say anything, as if she has seen it a million times. An archer would have no way of killing his dinner without night vision goggles. With that being said, this place has great food, nice cocktails, and a relaxing ambiance. We started off with the duck poutine, great choice. As you dig into them, you can feel the greasy goodness from the duck, and as you pulled them out of the dish, the cheese was at that perfect stringyness. The duck egg was cooked perfectly, the yoke was still liquid to where I just poured some on the fries. The Venison cheesteak was also great. I went here with friends. I am giving 3 stars because the food wasn't that special and price was pretty high for what was served (and the fact that it is in Jersey City). Atmosphere - bit dark and loud for my liking. Service - I asked the waiter to recommend the cocktail. Something in tall glass but what they recommended was not what I asked for. They did take the drink back and served me something else but in the bill it was included. We asked to take it out and they did so. The speed is either super fast and then was super slow. I grabbed some drinks and apps here a few weeks back w/a group of friends. They have a fantastic and inventive cocktail menu w/many of the drinks being served with a ton of shaved ice on top. I got the 'ol 55 (cognac, pear liqueur, lemon, cinnamon, cardamom bitters) for $12. It was strong but delicious. I loved how the shaved ice melts right into the drink. The appetizers were great especially the fried pimento cheese ($9) which while small was incredibly flavorful and darn delicious. The pretzel w/beer cheese ($8) and deviled eggs ($11) were also pretty good. Service was fairly good as it was easy to get drinks and food. I am quite fond of the Archer. It's got the dim lighting and hunter's affair with a stash of hipster and romantic setting. In words, it sounds like a mess but somehow they have it going with the right pieces. My friend and I shared the duck burger, rabbit and pork cheek terrine, and baby brussels sprouts. Both of the duck and terrine were flavorfully and aromatically tempting with its gameyness and juiciness. I particularly like the composition of the burger with the gouda, arugula, and cherry barbecue compote. It further enhanced the duck meat. The side of chips were very crispy. The terrine can be a shareable starter or a light entree to pair with a side. I went with the latter and it was a solid choice. The terrine has several layers to it, from the cornichon's subtle vinegary sourness to the jam's hint of jalapeno spice. Simple but complex. On a lighter note, all three items were on the saltier end. I probably should've ordered a drink to go with them. I guess that means I will have to make a return! read more
