It came up to over $18 with the tip. I got back to my office and no cheese, no avocado. I walked it right on back and got my money. Such a yummy little afternoon lunch! Great location with parking and indoor/outdoor seating. Reasonable pricing and the food was fresh and high quality. What I ate: Tululah salad, sweet potato fries Visit date: January 10, 2019 First time? No. I'd been here years before and had memorable bad experiences including soup that tasted like dog food. I rarely spit food out of my mouth and this was one of those occasions. But that was years ago and I work really close by so I decided to try Artisan again. Today I went with something safe - sweet potato fries and a salad. I've never actually had fries that I didn't want to eat before. The sweet potatoes fries were burnt. The dipping sauce helped cover the burnt flavor but I stopped eating after a few fries. Whyyyy, howwww? The salad had mandarin oranges, dates, jicama, and candied almonds, and was served with a citrus soy vinaigrette. The flavors were more on the sweet side, and I appreciated the fresh and bright lettuce. But if I'm to be completely honest I was a little scared to eat it. I know this probably happens all the time but this time I saw it! The person preparing my food was using her bare hands (that's fine) but touches their hair then went back to prepping my food. I also saw her put mandarin oranges on the salad bed and remove them, getting rid of the container of mandarins, then getting a fresh batch of mandarins to put in my salad. A+ for swapping them out but if something was wrong with them then there was still questionable residual mandarin juice on my salad. I've always loved this area. I ordered pancakes, eggs and a side of potatoes. The food was ok. My potatoes were somewhat hard. Thus, the 4 stars. Yogurt and granola - used Yoplait yogurt which I didn't care for since I don't care for sugary yogurt. They make their own granola and they give you a generous portion (had to take half home) but would prefer a greek yogurt. Crab Sandwich - good value at only ~$13 with a side of sweet potato fries. Generous portion of crab in the sandwich. Portobello Mushroom Sandwich - $8 and it came with a side salad. Tasty veggie option without being overly salted. In my experience, restaurant employees are usually happy to see their first customer of the day, but Karina from Artisan cafe proved me wrong. I happened to show up on the exact hour of when they were schdeuled to open because I was super hungry, and the door was locked. After stepping away from the door, I waited outside. Karina saw me, opened the door and yelled at me, "do you know when we open?" (Good morning to you too, Karina). I said yes and that it was the time when they were scheduled to be open, and she had snapped back and responded, "barely." She was so rude and I had felt SO bad. Now, I am happy to take my business across the street to Lupita's, Starbucks, and Mountain Mike's where employees are nice and don't get mad at me for showing up at the time of opening. Artisan Kitchen just started serving dinner on Friday and Saturday nights 5pm-8pm. I went on Friday, and honestly, I just may have had the best salmon and mashed potatoes I have ever eaten. The sauce on the salmon was amazing. I went back on Saturday for an encore entreé. The Artisan Kitchen did not disappoint. It was so nice to be able to relax in their sweet succulent garden, have a nice glass of wine, and enjoy a completely satisfying dinner. Nice little place with some growing to do. I had the tri tip sandwich and added a side of the beet salad (with goat cheese, walnuts, onions). I enjoyed it and ate everything, but I'll raise my standards on my next visit. Some observations: - logistics in the kitchen seem a little off, had to wait 20 minutes for a sandwich to go, observed some chaos in food hand off. - tri tip was cooked well for some reason, seasoning was a little bland, but it was still mostly tender. - sandwich was to come with caramelized onions, they were still crunchy and added little flavor, thankfully there was some spread on the bread that was tasty (and the bread was great). - beet salad needed some more zip, maybe salt or vinegar, and I got one tiny morsel of goat cheese with my three pounds of beets. Folks were very nice and I suspect that with a little more time all of the kinks will be worked out. Looking forward to trying some of the other food soon. read more

This was a nice gem to find in this area after a co-worker and I finished a meeting. We were pleasantly surprised by not just the variety and selection of the menu items but that the food itself and its ingredients were delicious. The Thai Salad was very good and everything in it was fresh and flavorful. My favorite was the string beans with tomatoes and walnuts though. It had this sweet tangy (almost like sweet and sour sauce) taste and the tomatoes tasted like they were just picked - yum. I tried some of my co worker's watermelon Fresca drink and that was really good - perfect for a warm and sunny day. I wished I worked around here so I could come here more often! read more

I rushed to the front of the line ahead of my group of 7 to order and suddenly was paralyzed by options. Pulled pork sandwich? Fried chicken breast sandwich? Tri-tip sandwich? So much deliciousness in one small sandwich joint! I decided on the Sliced Prosciutto with pears, Gorgonzola cheese, caramelized onions on walnut-wheat bread. Impressions: - a very well put-together sandwich - at first glance, the bread seemed a little too crunchy, but in the end, added to the flavor - BUTTERED BREAD. It bothered me that I had to use 3 napkins to eat my sandwich in a dignified manner. - prosciutto + pears + gorgonzolla combined makes a delicious meal. I was advised that this is a very "rich" sandwich. It was. I was full for the next 6 hours at work. - salad was average, but a nice touch to the meal - price: $7.63 with tax. Not bad. Helpful notes: If you order to "eat in" you get a complimentary side salad and ice cold lemon water. They have tables that are large enough to fit a group of 8 max if you plan to bring a group. You can tell each and every person working there genuinely cares about that place. Also, the previous restaurant manager in me couldn't help but notice how sparkling clean it is. While standing at the register, you can see back into the kitchen/storage area and there is no clutter or debris and THE FLOORS ARE CLEAN IN THE WHOLE PLACE! I've been here 4-5 times, and have never had a bad experience. The restaurant itself is a bit non-descript and is nestled within an office park of sorts so it might be a bit hard to find. In any case, it has always seemed to have a steady but by no means overwhelming lunch crowd. And, finally, the construction woes that have plagued this Marina Bay area of Richmond are finally over. So, access is a bit easier. As others have noted, portions can be bigger than you might expect even though prices are pretty average. Most of what I've had here has been good, but not always great. Case in point is the Polynesian brisket sandwich special that I ordered on my recent stop here. It was a pretty nice looking sandwich, served with both fries and salad for less than $13. I really liked the bun, though the meat itself was chewy and had very little flavor. They have a sriracha ketchup available that was a perfect dip for the fries. I've had good sandwiches and salads here and the specials are usually an interesting choice. I believe that breakfast items are served all day here, if that is your jam. Great customer service here, however I was referred to the cafe from co workers. Went once and had a mini branch in my salad. No clue what it was. Looked like a small tree branch. $20.00 salad. Overall most food is good quality and has various salads in rotation - so depending on day it can be super yum or kinda weird lol. I was not too fond of my tri tip sandwich this particular visit as the meat was very very fatty but still will return. Unfortunately the clientele that eats here is rude in general. I had the mozzeralla and tomato sandwich (6.25) and hubby had the tri tip sandwich with onions (6.75). The sandwiches were warm, tasty and substantial. What I was curious about was the fact that both of the sandwiches didn't match their descriptions. For example, neither sandwich had greens inside while this was advertised as being included. Also, both sandwiches were advertised as using rosemary ciabatta but the breads in our sandwiches were noticably different. Hubby's bread was lighter and crispier and my bread was heavier and more doughy. I much preferred his bread. Also, the prices were not clearly advertised. There were many salads and two different size pastic containers to choose from. My husband pointed to the smaller container and asked for some mac and cheese. When our bill was rung up, the lady charged twice of the smaller size container. This is when we discovered that the mac and cheese were essentially considered an entree and priced as such (around 6 dollars) and came with a salad. We canceled the order since I only wanted a sample of the mac and cheese. The lady at the counter graciously offered us a generous sample. It was delicious. Service here is fast. The people are polite and honest. They are a new establishment and need to display their prices clearly. They also offer Peet's coffees, teas, and various pastries but prices were not displayed. Over time, I know they will iron out these kinks. The food is tasty, fresh, and reasonably priced and so I definitely recommend The Artisan Kitchen. Their hours are Mon. to Fri. 7:30AM- 2:00PM.
