We were there for a late lunch today with old friends and family. Love the deck, but sadly it was raining, so ate by a table looking out at Main Street. I had an old favorite, tempeh burger, which was delicious on brioche bun, piled high with lettuce tomato onion. The hand cut French fries are always great. My wife had the open veggie with tofu, on a bed of rice. Another old favorite. The sauce on this dish is licking good. This is always our "go to" place to have a great meal when friends and family are in town. We usually have one of their specials (always a real treat), but sometimes the old favorites are good comfort food, especially on a rainy fall day. You won't be disappointed. read more

We had a great meal and service at the Autumn Cafe. We had a reservation as a large party - two tables of 10. Everyone loved their meals. About 6 of us had their specials which were all very tasty. I especially loved the mojo pork chop and salad with creamy herb dressing. The bowls are very yummy and creative, must go back to continue trying them! Service with Lara, excellent! This was my first time eating at the Autumn Cafe, and it was long overdue. my neighbor, a vegetarian, had insisted that the hot open veggie is amazing (delicious, large portions). I naturally chose to order the hot open veggie with tofu and my friend had the BLT. Service was friendly and attentive without being overly intrusive. She checked in with us regularly to make sure that we had everything we needed and dropped off to go containers without being prompted. Food: my friend said that the BLT was delicious. I actually found the hot open veggie to be just okay when I had it during lunch today... The veggie gravy was a bit too salty and it wasn't mixed with the brown rice so I had thought that it was bland in areas. There is a generous heaping of vegetables and mozzarella layered overtop. I heated up some leftovers for dinner and found that the flavor was much better. Perhaps it just took some mixing. I had originally said that I wouldn't get the hot open veggie again, but I will retract that decision. It's a great spot for a casual lunch or dinner and it fills up quickly. read more

Went here for brunch while in Oneonta for the Cooperstown ASV tourney. No A/C so if you're looking to cool down in the summer, this is not the spot. They have a outdoor patio out back which was very nice with covered tables. Food was fine (breakfast is hard to mess up) and service very friendly. Visited this bar/restaurant for lunch on a recent Saturday. We were greeted warmly and seated quickly. Ordered a Tito' bloody mary which I didnt enjoy. Tasted like they poured olive brine (too much) in the drink....We ordered the board special burger which had artichoke and cheese topping. No price was listed. Also had chicken fajitas. The burger and fajitas were good but, the burger, which came w fries was $16! The fajitas was 2 tiny tortillas w less chicken than a chipotle burrito. It came with bland brown rice. Fantastic food! While bringing my brother back to school, we were famished and needed a compromise, vegan for me and regular food for him. I got the vegan burger with a side of fries and he got a tartine of some sort. We both were very pleased with our food and it was honestly one of the best veggie burgers I've ever had. The spices were perfect, the pickle was otherworldly and the fries were awesome. The staff were really friendly and nice, the vibe was laid back and the price was pretty great! Two meals and it came out to $23. Where I live, it would have been at least $30 if not more. My only regret is that this place isn't any closer to home! Any restaurant can have an off day, so we gave the Autumn Cafe a second try. An hour and 10 minutes for a table, ok. They were very busy. But half the tables sat empty while we waited. So I guess they are understaffed. Or a combination of poor management and being understaffed. We then waited an hour for our food once we were seated, so I guess the kitchen needs some help getting organized too. The place wasn't very busy by that point. Also, many menu items not available. I stopped for a sandwich while moving my daughter into her apartment. We waited 30 minutes and asked if it would be much longer. They said it would be out shortly we waited another 30 minutes an hour total. And asked again about our order. And were told it will be out shortly. The waitress came back 4 minutes later to tell us they where out of what I ordered. It was not during a busy time it was 2pm. It was not crowded. They where not apologetic or offered a reason An hour wait to tell me I couldn't get what I ordered. We walked out along with 3 other tables who also got tired of waiting for simple orders. We stopped in for a late Friday night dinner after a long drive. The empty tables weren't cleaned but a table of our choice was cleared right away. American menu that is vegetarian and healthy friendly. Great beer selection including craft and seasonals. Be sure to check their specials board. Very reasonable prices. Tried the tempah, but we weren't too crazy over it. The turkey sandwich was delish! I could tell that there were a bunch of local regulars, which is a good sign, and this helped make it a happy and friendly place with a casual and comfortably roomy environment! I will be back! The Autumn is like home to many local folk (and a fun pass-through for visitors) -- Always the same chill vibe, you know you'll enjoy your Tempeh Burger, listen to some great music on the stereo, and you'll surely never get a smile from the owner's son. It's comforting to know what to expect. The specials are good to above average. The regular menu is good. The atmosphere is great -- a little loud and certainly not private if you're trying to hide. The beer and wine selection are great. And the bands start late, play loud, and are usually pretty kickin.' The staff is lovely! A wonderfully diverse collection of tattooed hipsters, artists, and such -- maybe a little punchy at times, but it adds to the mystique. I mostly love a summer Sunday on the back deck drinking belinis and nursing a hangover -- and you look around and there are all of your friends at the surrounding tables doing the same. Fresh food, particularly the vegetables that taste as if they were pulled out of the ground after you ordered. If that were the case, it would explain the slow speed of service. Waitresses were good, it just took time in the kitchen. Each meal is freshly created so the wait can be pretty long for your meal when the place is crowded. Worth the wait. Ommegang BPA on tap was excellent. Burger was tremendous. Vegetable omelette (Oompa-Loompa) was scrumptious. The potato salad was freshly made with a fresh potato taste. The special flat iron steak was just ok. Stick with the fresh local vegetables, eggs, and cow. We were in town for a weekend and ate here 3 times because of the quality. I give the Autumn Café 4.5 stars! It's a great local place. I especially, and absolutely, love the Grilled Cheese sandwich with sprouts and tomato. The best I've ever had in a restaurant anywhere! I would also give the buffalo burger an honorable mention, although I'm not sure if it's still on the menu. This café has a warm friendly feel. Oneonta has amazing farm fresh produce. Three words: get the fishcakes. It's unprecedented that we actually like a dish in New York so much that we put in another order to take home to Rhode Island for later. We stopped briefly through Oneonta, for the first time in our lives, and we wandered into this place, and it felt immediately like we were in our home headspace. It's a quirky, comfy, thoughtful, honey-warm little haven with a beer list clearly chosen by someone who appreciates beer. The few dishes we sampled made it borderline unfathomable that they were capable of a real dud. I mean, maybe. I'd be surprised. The service was friendly but operated at a relaxed pace. Some might have a problem with it (including me, if everything else hadn't been good), but there's something to be said for service that isn't in your face all the time. It's a fine line. Stopped in for lunch while in Oneonta for work. If the waitstaff is the face of your restaurant then I was a bit disappointed. My waitress seemed very rushed and I didn't even receive a "How are you?" Nevermind am expected smile.. Checked out the specials and soups of day and was excited for the black bean tomato and corn... Was then told the sign was wrong..so I switched to a spicy Mexican potato that was 1) not spicy and 2) not creamy enough to be called potato soooo. As a note 30 mins later the soup specials is still wrong.,, My salad was good but challenging as it was not tossed nor was my plate big enough to effectively mix. I've been an off-and-on vego for nearly 10 years, and any place that has a vegetarian reuben can count on my patronage at least once. When I was in Oneonta for 6 weeks, I had the tempeh reuben here at Autumn every other week. It's deliciousness cannot be overstated. Though I do wish there was a way to make it a little less messy... I am pretty sure the kraut is made in-house (but maybe don't quote me on that). The service can be hit-or-miss. It's a cute space, with a little elevated section in the middle and a nice mural on the wall that makes it feel cozy. There's nothing quite like working a long hard day, then relaxing outside, overlooking the unbelievably beautiful mountainside! Last time we came here, I ordered a pitcher of Ommegang Rare Vos for about $16 - really delicious and unbeatable price. Just be careful of the food quality - I specifically asked the waitress if the mushrooms were really fresh, otherwise I'd pass (you can ask for additions) and she said absolutely, yes. But they weren't that fresh after all, in fact, they were a little off. :( My boyfriend ordered the enchilada dish - he's certainly not picky at all, but mentioned that while it wasn't anything special, it hit the spot (quite large portion). Our male server made us all VERY uncomfortable with his side comments. SO AWKWARD! It is your job, if you don't like it don't do it! Day two for brunch, so maybe that's why they don't have it together. EggS Benedict is only one egg, the menu says items come with toast and they do not. When we told our server we were ready to order (after a bit of a wait) he responded with "I know." How about a smile and "be right with you!" I have been here several times for brunch in the past and have had a wonderful experience each time. This evening, my family and I came for dinner and the service was very slow, I was very disappointed. The inside was empty and the back deck was half full, and everything came out super slow. 20 minutes for our first round of drinks to come, almost 40 for appetizers. We asked for a second round of drinks when our dinners arrived and our drinks came out after we were all finished eating. Our appetizers (flatbread special and scallops) were also cold. The Autumn Cafe makes ok food that is about what I would make at home, sometimes it is good, sometimes it is just alright. It doesn't get me excited, ever, going there. My wife likes it a lot. The mexican food is not even close to anything authentic, and most of the other stuff is okay, if you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, you will probably love it. The people are friendly and it is a nice ambiance. If you don't eat 'healthy' at all and want to try something different, you might like this place to try some new things. But I guess it really depends on when you go and who is cooking. They just aren't big on flavor, generally. But I will say that it is fairly good for you and I am glad they are there. That said, I usually pass this place on my way to Athens, the greek place down the road. They are a lot better and cheaper for lunch or dinner and they are very good. If I could I would give this place two and a half stars, rather than just two, but they won't let me do that, and the three stars, well, I can't go there, sorry! read more

There was a pretty strong smell of urine coming out of the men's room and wafting into the restaurant. Maybe it was just a one-time thing from a dirty patron, but it was a turn-off. The best food in town and a really comfortable space with lots of local art. (including the mural). Good music too. I like it that they have fresh food cooked to order and local raised meat. I am not much of a drinker, but they have some wines I like as well. The best part is that they are always trying new stuff. Sometimes maybe it doesn't work, but if you want the same thing over and over maybe taco bell or mickey ds would be better, or the diner where the food is delivered from a big company and reheated. I have never had bad service--sometimes flakey service, but all in good nature. The people there care about the food, the place, the town and their workers and customers. My first and last visit. Went on Sunday at 12:30 am. Sat at a table next to the bar. Sat there 15 minutes with not so much as a hello from any staff. No menu no water. Nothing. Finally I ordered a drink. 10 minutes later it arrived, and a menu. I ordered eggs and potatoes. Time ticked by, drink empty and no one. I tried to get water from a passing server, but no such luck. Food arrived and oh can I get you another drink? I finished food and drink showed up. Plate removed and tab left immediately. Within 5 minutes server was back to pick up payment, fastest part of service. Regarding food. Eggs burnt. Scrambled eggs burnt. Nothing special about potatoes. I've been to a couple of places in town and Autumn Cafe ranks dead last in service and the one food item I ordered. I would avoid. read more

The Autumn is another cafe/bistro I love. Seasonal ingredients, daily specials incorporating the farmer's market finds right outside the front door. Great fresh food, reminds of the Gay '90's Bistro in New Paltz NY and the small vegetarian restaurant around the corner from the Heugonot library , The Wildflower Cafe...(MInd you, this was the early '90's, these New Paltz cafes may no longer be there but for in my memory). Think Proust and Madelines.... Sample menu: Orange Mint Soup (cold) Tomato White Bean (hot) Hummus wraps, tempeh stir fry, marinated tofu & so much more, lots of options for folks who enjoy meat dishes too, fish cakes, chicken, really wonderful hamburgers.
