Went for a friends birthday; group of 7 ladies. We have a group of about 12 that get together throughout the year at local restaurants for birthdays where we each have a few drinks a meal and bring a small cake to share. First time at The Back Abbey and it will be the last. We are all local families with kids in the area so this is a significant amount of negative impact. The service was very slow, food was good but slow and overpriced. The drinks were extremely overpriced and just ok. Vodka soda $15. We got our bill and divided it out which gratuity was already added at a high % rate and gave our payments accordingly. The gentleman (manager) comes back and states we are $15 short. Not possible... we divided it several times and added it back. We realized the new bill he gave us with our total had a cake cutting fee now added of $15 which wasn't there before. He tried pulling a fast one. They didn't cut our cake, we did. Why didn't they say anything in the beginning? Why was it added after the fact? We will be going to other local places where for many years we have never ran into this issue. Shame on you Back Abbey for trying to be crooked on top of overpriced burgers salads and overpriced drinks. read more

We were looking forward to a nice meal here and it was so disappointing. I had been to the other location and had good experiences. The fries were not even hot or crispy. My schnitzel was so tough and flavorless. Also had the bratwurst that came on a huge roll that was way too much bread for that size sausage. I've frequented this location since they opened last year (2022), mostly on Sundays. My experience at the Belgian gastropub has been very positive. The various managers, bartenders, and waiting and cooking staff have all been friendly and receptive. While I haven't eaten many of the items on the menu, I will attest to their burgers, crab cakes, and steamed mussels being delicious. Well-stocked with an impressive selection of beers, they also have some great wines and tasty cocktails. They support live music and have some very talented musicians there during evenings and for Sunday brunches (12:00-3:00 pm). The indoor area opens up to the spacious patio area. Huge fan of the Claremont location so wanted to give the new location a try. The location is easy to find with plenty of parking. They also have live music on weekends I believe. The menu seemed to be pretty similar to the Claremont location but huge difference in the service provided. Not sure if this location is still working on getting up to speed but be prepared to wait. We found an empty table that a female server said we could take. She then stated she would bring us menus. The ambiance was very chill and cozy, not too loud. About 10-15 mins later, a male server asked us if we'd been helped and needed menus. We then ordered drinks along with our food. I ordered the lavender fog and the chicken club, and my husband ordered the Mary's secret and fish sandwich. We also asked for a full order of fries to share. Took about another 10 mins to get our food. When the fries came, I asked for an extra plate, which never came. The food was good but not the best. It wasn't something I could say I'll return for. Only if you have no reference of the stellar food and service from Back Abbey's Claremont location will you be completely thrown from the lack of service and mediocre food at this location. Will the owners of Back Abbey please hire and retrain your staff from top to bottom. Make them aware on how to give guest's a positive experience, hire skilled managers and make sure quality dishes are being served. Great stop en route to Palm Springs. Hyper focus on European / Belgian ales, which - while not my preference (I prefer NW or NE IPAs) - I appreciated their devoted conviction to this genre of ales. The tavern has a beautiful setting with sunset views out of one side of the restaurant and a mountain vista out the other. Food was classic bar fare but nicely done and presented. Service was attentive and crisp. So, definitely seek out if you're a fan of European ales and give it a shot even if that isn't typically your beverage of choice. read more

As a fan of the original location, I was so excited to hear there was a second and larger location in Upland. And it's right across from my massage place so I hope this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship! Like the original location, it's seat yourself. For our brunch meal, we chose a seat on the outdoor patio to enjoy the lovely afternoon weather. Very spacious area with lots of seating, umbrellas, and heat lamps. It was a mish mash crowd of young families, couples, and dog lovers with their doggies. Upon selecting a table, we were greeted and brought menus. Although I'm a wino, the cocktail menu really caught my attention and I just had try one of the seasonal cocktails, Harvest Sangria. Ok it does contain wine so I didn't stray too far, but it also has other delicious ingredients like vodka, apple cider, cinnamon, hazelnut liquor, and garnished with pear slices and a cinnamon stick. Delightful and perfect for the autumn season. My husband had the Lemongrass Collins. I took a sip and immediately tasted fresh lemon. Super good! For food we had the Bavarian Pretzel, Pommes Frites, Full Belgian Breakfast, and the Spicy Chicken Schnitzel. Everything was delicious, and the spice on the schnitzel was provided by my favorite chili, Fresno chili. Service was pleasant and the food came out quickly. Love this new location! We are used to going to the Claremont Back Abbey, but this location is closer to our house and more kid friendly in my opinion. Unique and tasty beer and cocktail options! I love their "New York Sour". Their burgers are obviously the star of the show here (much deserved), but imo their fish and chips are off the charts amazing!! They came out piping hot, moist, crispy, and flaky. Get the French fries... the bigger sized order. You will not be able to stop eating them and you'll wish you for the larger order. They come with a trio of sauces (green pesto-like cream sauce, a mild horseradish cream sauce, and ketchup). The live music in addition to the unforgettable food makes this place a 10/10 experience for any date night, family dinner, or night out with friends. read more

We really wanted to like it here and hoped that the service improved since they opened as we read the reviews prior. Sadly, the service lacked terribly. The ambiance was lacking any music after the live band finished about 5 mins after we got there. It was awkwardly quiet and this is not what you except for a brewery type place. It's self serve seating which I think is the first thing that hurts them as they don't realize when new customers sit down, so therefore the lack of initial greeting, menu giving etc was delayed. Service was terrible. Took over 10 mins to receive our drinks after we ordered them, and then once they arrived we asked for sugar for the tea. She forgot and we asked another waitress passing by. Get our food, she forgot napkins and silverware, so we waited while she wondered around confused stopping at other tables until we had to ask someone again for our napkins and silverware. She stopped by to see how everything was and I asked for dressing for my salad. Again... she forgot and had to be asked a second time. Food 4 out of 5 Service 2 out of 5 Ambiance 2 out of 5 due to lack of music. Needless to say we were disappointed as I mentioned we wanted to like it here. Hopefully management will step in and train the new staff and make it a point to focus on service. Hopefully we will be able to return and change this review to a 5 star review. read more

This is my second review... This place is awesome! I was here on opening day and now we're back again on December 10. Jeffrey are bartender meet us this awesome drink called a "hot mess." I can't tell you how awesome this drink is! It is not sweet, but slightly spicy with a Problano chili and Mezcal, along with some secret secondary ingredients. We arrived on Saturday afternoon and had a mixed experience. While the food was good, the service was disappointing. Our waitress took our order quickly, but after that, she was nowhere to be seen. Our food arrived before our drinks, which were eventually dropped off by someone else. We finished our meal without a single check-in from our waitress. When we asked for the check, she simply dropped it off without a word--no "How was everything?" or "Thank you for coming." She just set it down and walked away. Wasn't that busy, we could see some people finishing up their Sunday brunch. The service was very chaotic and it seemed like they didn't know what they were doing. A Waiter came up and started talking to us like he was in the middle of a conversation, we didn't even know who he was at first as it just looked like some random guy wearing a black T-shirt. I found out later that it was the manager. We ordered some burgers and fries. The quality of the food for the price being paid was mediocre at best. This review is a little late but still deserves a review, I was here with a friend on Saturday April 1st around 9:15pm and it was crowded. We waited 10min before being sat in the covered patio area. Patio was a bit tight, had heaters as well. The table next to us had older ladies talking really loud to there partners which made my conversation with my friend a little harder to hear. The waiter was very friendly, his name is Virgil. He consistently check on our table which was nice. Gave good recommendations as well. We ordered the Pomme Frites (French fries that comes with 3 types of sauce; Ketchup, Horseradish, and Aoili?) and ordered the Dip of the Day which happened to be Spinach & Artichoke Dip (came with baked slices of bread). I ordered the beer on tap-Kwak which was hazelnut brown colored creamy/wheat flavored which is what I wanted. My friend got a canned apple cider drink. Overall, the price is a little steep for the portion of food we got. Fries were firm, I didn't really care for them, I liked the Aoili sauce. I did enjoy the dip of the day. The beer I enjoyed. Forgot what my husband got, but he was NOT extremely impressed anyway. I do not recommend the deconstructed cheesecake. We sat around for maybe 30 minutes waiting for the server to pick up our payment. I eventually had to get up and ask another worker to close out our bill. All that for a total of $85. NOT THE SAME BACK ABBEY I'VE ENJOYED FOR YEARS. DISAPPOINTED. Been to their Claremont location many times and always loved their Back Abbey burger. Came here about a month ago and had the same great tasting burger. Not sure what happened last night but the burger I got was half as thick as normal and very tough. If you've had their burgers before they make these very thick patties medium rare and you know they melt in your mouth like butter. Not this time...very tough and chewy. They re-made us another burger that was better but still not quite right and I can tell it's because they thinned out the patty...not easy to make a thin patty into a nice tender medium rare. Girlfriend had the battered fish - last month it was also AMAZING, this time it was more chewy and had a much more fishy smell. Service was mediocre at best. Both times at this location we had the same server and both times he was not so friendly and very inattentive, although he was also bartending so maybe they need more staff? Either way, we felt very unwelcome to be there both times. Their only saving grace is a very helpful guy there named Virgil. He seemed to be the only employee there in our experience who wants to actually help you if you need it and was very courteous to us both times although he was not our server. Ambiance is fine for what it is, no complaints. After last night I'm not dying to go back but if I get a craving for another burger I'll likely take my chances at the Claremont location. read more

As a fan of the original Back Abbey in Claremont, I was excited to have a new location 5 minutes from my house. Finally made it there for a little impromptu valentines lunch with my wife yesterday. Different space, different experience. Definitely not the same feel and vibe. I guess thats the difference between being in a 100 year old building in a college town vs in a strip mall. The fun part of Back Abbey has always been the beer selection. I'd walk in and feel compelled to order a Chimay. Did not get that vibe here, and didn't feel compelled to order a beer, even though I had every excuse to indulge at lunchtime. Settled for a water. On to the food. This is still delicious! I don't think anything has been lost in translation from one location to then other. I had the soup/salad, wife had a brat, we split a half cone of pomme frites. My favorites (pomme frites and the pub salad) are still on point. The dressing and the brioche croutons on the salad are what makes it work. Tangy, sweet, the added texture of the house made croutons all make the salad stand out vs just being an afterthought. The crispness and just-right saltiness of the fries is something I've yet to find anywhere else. Seriously addictive. Wife's brat looked great (she wouldn't let me try it!). The spicy apple mustard was a bit strong for her palate, so she opted to steal my remoulade ranch from the pomme frites as a condiment. Sacrilegious, but it was Valentine's Day and I wasn't about to argue with her. She ate every bite. Portions were right, everything tasted fresh. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive, but lacked that warmth. It could have been my perception of the space that made it feel that way, or it could be that the space dictates how staff and guests interact while in it. Not a huge knock, but it was noticeable. Overall a good experience. I'll be giving them another visit when the weather warms and the patio is more useful. Lounging outside, delicious beer, cone of fries, good company...those are my best memories of the Claremont location. If Upland is able to recreate a little of that for me, I'll be a regular! read more
