Wonderful Friday afternoon lunch at The Back Abbey - Upland Colonies. My server Juan was very attentive and made the entire experience fantastic and worth coming back. My preferred beer was out but he took the initiative to bring me 2 appropriate samples and I selected a new beer. Also on this hot day my ice water was constantly filled and the crab cakes were excellent. I look forward to a return visit! This place has become our little gem. We used to go to the Claremont location, but once we found this one, which is closer to home, we definitely pop in more. The patio has heaters along with a beautiful view of the mountains. On the weekend, they always have live entertainment food and cocktails are amazing. read more

Ordered a brat which was on a yummy bun that had a crunch to it. We had these gravy fries with cheese curds. I wasn't sure about these when we ordered them. But let me tell you.. yummy!!! I could not stop eating them!! Hamburger is on a sweet bun was nice and juicy. Ordered a butter cocktail. Was ok, but a little string for me as I usually like girly drinks. Randomly came in for a beer and ended up staying for dinner! Ordered the olives and almonds - perfect finger food that lasted me almost the entire seating- I do love olives and nuts, but these were warm, crunchy almonds and perfectly salty olives. Next up was a garden salad (not on menu just wanted a side salad) and the greens were fresh; dressing was tasty- not sure what it was but I ate it. Our main course was the steak & frites - medium steak was nailed down and didn't need any steak sauce despite most ppl asking for it (hint hint my boo). The fries are potato cut, almost competitive with in n outs - could it be? Either way they were perfect. Umm can I say service was better than expected?Rebecca, you're the sweetest! I've been a longtime fan of the original location in Claremont, so it was just a matter of time before I made it to their new Upland location. It is conveniently located in the Upland Colonies shopping center, right there in the same corner with Albertson's. You can't miss it. The bar and dining room are inspired by the OG location but have a fresh, open, and inviting feel. Very different from the alleyway, hidden away vibe you get there. This one is bright and spacious. Also... there is ample and easy parking!! The food and drinks?? Delicious and delicious. The burgers and fries are just as delcious as the other location. In fact, there is no need to compare the two anymore... This restaurant is excellent and stands on its own. Sit at the bar and let Zach and Marc Athony mix you a great cocktail or pour an excellent pint of Beligian ale. The beer list is long and includes some of Europe's most delicious and distinguished beers. The cocktails are unique recipes conceived in-house. Did I mention they have the game on too! Came here for St.Patricks Day lunch. They had brunch at the time we went, however the food was very good. My husband had the burger and I had the steak salad. Both dressing were so good. Both a vinaigrette I believe. Our server was great and we really enjoyed the live music. read more

Found this place on the world's greatest app Yelp. On our way to Arizona, we wanted to have fish and chips since it's Friday so we made pit stop. Let me tell you this was probably the best fish and chips we ever had. Very generous 2 big pieces of fish and very good amount of chips. Fish was super crispy from outside and very moist inside. Fries had perfect amount of salt and crispy yet soft in middle. The batter was delicious and fish was so flaky and moist we couldn't be happier. Service is excellent inside has really cool music playing with chill vibes. They also have really nice outdoor seating as well but we opted to seat inside since it was cold day. Ok. I live nearby. I've given this place sooooo many chances. Then I thought ok, maybe this place is a drinks only place. Until my last visit. First time I went the table was sticky and I got food in my water and spoiled lettuce mixed in my salad. Second time I went the bathrooms were disgusting, and I pulled up a hair in my ranch when dipping my fry. Last night was my last visit. I ordered fries, in the fries there were long sautéed onions throughout the fries, not just on top but throughout. My drink was bourbon, whistle pig, 12yr, neat. In my drink was food. I have been quite a few times and ordered many different things off the menu. Overall 3/5 I like the live music and the dip they have which changes every month. A downside is that the dip does run out and they don't always have it. A negative is they do not know what medium rare is. I've ordered multiple different steaks and the tenderloin and it never has any pink or red. Idk why they ask how I want the meat cooked if it's never medium rare. read more

I ordered the Schnitzel "Breaded, pounded & fried pork loin.  Topped with a sweet & tangy salad of Belgian endive & organic green, red grapes, red sweet sauerkraut and our apple cider vinaigrette" What a total disappointment. When you can hold the corner of the pork chop up (not a bone in) and it was as stiff as cardboard. No flavor to it at all. I tried because I was so hungry but sometimes you just can't do it. The drinks on the other hand were tasty. I enjoyed a Mary's Secret. Very refreshing. Mary White Vodka + Pomegranate juice + St Germain + Grand Marnier + Fresh lemon juice + simple Nice live music with a big outdoor patio and fun vibe to the place. Absolutely do not recommend. Went here on Sunday for a family lunch. The staff did not greet us when we arrived. We had to go up to them to ask if we seat ourselves or not. There were at least 4 staff members behind the bar. We sat down inside and it was extremely hot. They had a garage door open from inside to outside. I'm 8 months pregnant and we had elders and children in our party. Almost everyone in the restaurant had flushed cheeks from how hot it was. We asked several times for them to turn on the AC or at least the fans. They did not. It took 20 minutes to get drinks. We were never offered kids menus or appetizers. At this point we had one Bloody Mary, one mocktail, and a few Shirley temples. We had 2 kids join us after baseball and waitress never brought them drinks. Our family decided it was best to leave since the service was awful and it was miserably hot inside. I asked for the check so we could leave, the server was very cold and rude. She brought me a $50 bill with a large group gratuity added. At this point, we were over the inattentive staff and the extremely hot inside. We left and I fell just outside the door due to how overheated and dizzy I became inside. Never experienced this lack of service at the Claremont location. I would suggest eating anywhere else and saving your money. Absolutely a waste of time. read more

I'm truly saddened to give this place less than four stars, as I'm a HUGE fan of the Claremont location. To be fair, this review is in comparison of that location. I've been to this location many times now, and I don't have hopes it will get better. To start, the fries. For some reason, at this location, I can NEVER get a full length fry. They seem to always be little "nubs" of fries, that can't be dipped in any of the three complimentary dipping sauces they provide. Maybe not a big deal to some, but when I'm paying $10 for them, you'd better KNOW I'm expecting some full length fries! Next, the lettuce in the burger. Twice, I've gotten wilted lettuce/greens in my Back Abbey burger. Nothing crisp about them. I'm not talkin about the way the greens tend to wilt a bit under the heat of a freshly made burger patty, I'm talking about them being wilted when they left the fridge. Just, completely, unappetizing. Lastly, the beer. While the selection is excellent, the service falls short. Too often, I'm left to raise my hand, in attempts to get attention from someone, that my glass has gone empty. Where this place excels is the view from the side patio. Wow! What a view. Back Abbey Claremont is terrific, and the menu is the same, so I don't frankly understand why this place is so disappointing. Maybe the griddle needs better seasoning? The food is just uninspired. Maybe there's something about looking at a glowing Bath and Body Works that draws from the experience - the location in Claremont has charm for days. Went for a friends birthday; group of 7 ladies. We have a group of about 12 that get together throughout the year at local restaurants for birthdays where we each have a few drinks a meal and bring a small cake to share. First time at The Back Abbey and it will be the last. We are all local families with kids in the area so this is a significant amount of negative impact. The service was very slow, food was good but slow and overpriced. The drinks were extremely overpriced and just ok. Vodka soda $15. We got our bill and divided it out which gratuity was already added at a high % rate and gave our payments accordingly. The gentleman (manager) comes back and states we are $15 short. Not possible... we divided it several times and added it back. We realized the new bill he gave us with our total had a cake cutting fee now added of $15 which wasn't there before. He tried pulling a fast one. They didn't cut our cake, we did. Why didn't they say anything in the beginning? Why was it added after the fact? We will be going to other local places where for many years we have never ran into this issue. Shame on you Back Abbey for trying to be crooked on top of overpriced burgers salads and overpriced drinks. read more
