The view is magnificent. There is inside and outside dining. The restaurant is a little on the expensive side but not crazy expensive. The food presentation is very good. I would even say exceptional. Each plate was garnished with edible flowers. Had three different dishes sword tuna and fish and chips. They are all excellent. Cooked perfectly as we ordered and accompanied by interesting sides. The tuna had the best grilled zucchini I've ever had. The swordfish came with a cold vinegar potato salad it was excellent. And the fish were just fish and chips. There was no room for dessert but I did take sweet rice and pineapple dish home. Also worthy of mention was their iced tea. The staff was exceptionally friendly and cordial. Love the food love the restaurant. Forgot to mention they brought these great little sliced cucumber pickles before the meal came and although you had to ask they had an excellent bread. read more

This restaurant has been on my radar for a long time, and I finally went yesterday. The place is adorable, and the views are breathtaking. It was a friday night, but this place was bumping! Easy to get a table, but the bar was overrun making it extremely loud. Complimentary pickles were provided when we were seated, i'm not a pickle fan but my companion was loving them. For entrees I ha the crab and sausage stuffed shrimp (23.50) which was just meh, it would have been much better if the stuffing had linguica instead of sausage. My cohort had the swordfish, which was delicious (24.50). We rounded out the meal sharing the apple crisp, which was a huge portion and i'd suggest getting a scoop of christina's ice cream with it which is amazing. This is my 2nd time to the Back Eddy and I have the same impressions from both visits. Great location, sit out back and overlook the water and relax. Food is ridiculously overpriced (ex. Fish and Chips is $28), the quality is good but not outstanding, do not bother with desert it has been dissapointing both times. You are greeted nicely at the door and overall the service is average. But they are always just a little too busy and never seem to get out orders correct and their excuse is that they are so busy. Must be nice. This is a great place!!! It is right on the water, and offers outdoor dining. They specialize in the freshest of seafood served with the freshest produce from local boats and farms. They go beyond simple favorites like the lobster and steamers that they serve at "market" price. The also have special dishes like my favorite, "Cod loin with Peruvian Lima Beans" The dish also includes little necks and linguica, a local sausage. Interestingly, as great as the seafood is, the place serves wonderful pulled pork!!!! Why???? I don't care!!!! If you can have a little bit of North Carolina on the Massachusetts shore, why complain!!! I'm not sure if they have a dress code as such. The place is "upscale", but in a L. L. Bean sort of way. I've never seen anyone turned away for dress, but then again I have never seen cut-offs and tank tops either. To get in, during high season, you want to beat the crowd that comes back from Horseneck beach, starting early afternoon. The Back Eddy is a great casual, by the sea restaurant. Reasonable prices , Great full bar, excellent menu and all food served is superb . Appetizers are great especially the mussels in coconut milk and spicy chili peppers, clam corn chowder is creamy and delectable . Seafood is superb , steaks are excellent , eddy salad is a must . Service is friendly and atmosphere is relaxed . Jazz brunch time is the best . Blueberry buckle is a dessert must have . Bartenders can shake or stir a great cocktail. Love this place . If in Westport wait here, might have a wait , but cocktails on their outside dock bar isn't a bad idea ! read more

I'm giving this 3 stars as we usually have a good time at the Back Eddy. It would have been 4 except our last experience was a bit of a let down. We love driving down to Westport and the surrounding South Coast area on a beautiful day and always make it a point to have dinner at the Back Eddy. The food is indeed very delicious. Since they don't take reservations and you're faced with a wait, then head over to the back dock and enjoy a cocktail al fresco and great views of the harbor and sunset. They also have a raw bar and other light snacks while you wait. During the summer time, bring bug spray as the mosquitoes are wicked. Caveat - Expect a long wait after 6pm on a Saturday Night. I've been here maybe 5 or 6 times over the years but I must say, my last visit wasn't all that great. I admit our timing was awful. We didn't get to the restaurant until 7 pm and were faced with a 2 hour wait, and it was a FULL 2 hours. The hostess gives you a buzzer to notify you when your table is ready. Well, the buzzer goes off and we head to the hostess station and she lets us know our table is outside (with the terrifying mosquitoes). We decline and she says its another 40 minute wait. (See smoke coming out of our ears.) We would have left except there isn't a whole lot of places to go in Westport. We ended up waiting only an additional 10 more minutes, and the hostess lead us to....an unmade table; dirty dishes and glassware from the previous party. So we stand there while the busboy sets the table. The service can be spotty and tonight was a prime example. Lots of back and forth of forgotten things; and for the prices they charge you would think substituting baked beans for french fries would be no big deal...it's a big deal there. While waiting for our food I came to realize how LOUD this place is; and the pace is frenetic especially if you are seated in the path to the kitchen or bussing areas. There's a constant throng of wait staff yelling and picking up orders. What is usually a nice dinner felt more like clam shack ambiance. I'll probably still go to the Back Eddy but definitely not after 6 pm. If it ends up being this late, I'll just assume drive over to the Handy Hill Creamery for burger, fries and an awesome frappe. read more

We love to go to this restaurant after being at the beach all day. It is a little pricy but it is located right on the water and you can see a wonderful sunset especially from the deck of the outside bar. The food is good but not spectacular and the wine list is a bit limited for our taste. It can be difficult to park if you come late for dinner. read more

Having lived in Westport for many years, we regularly frequented The Back Eddy. However, the absence of a single vegetarian/vegan entree poses a real problem for family members subscribing to plant-based diets as well as to friends who are kosher. The only vegetarian options are a starter salad, deviled egg appetizer, and a few side dishes-- none of which are sufficient for a satisfying meal. While we understand that a restaurant on the water will serve predominantly seafood, its shocking and hugely disappointing that there isn't a single vegetarian pasta or plant-based entree available. Frankly, if even Burger King can find a way to accommodate vegetarians, there really is no excuse for the lack of options at The Back Eddy. If you or your guests are vegetarian, vegan, or kosher you are advised to take your business elsewhere (or else be prepared to leave hungry!) read more

06/13/15--Dropped by on Saturday for an initial Back Eddy visit. I'm 66 and never wrote a review but felt compelled to do so. While I had to live with the fact they only do lunches on weekends, they ONLY offer a dinner menu. It was 1:00 in the afternoon and had to choose from $21 to $30 entrees. That accounted why on a beautiful summer afternoon the place was 3/4+ empty. We opted for an ap that include the crab cakes for $13 that were so small (2) that you got 3 nibbles before they were gone. They were a little oily tasting and had a puree consistency rather than a textured normal crab cake feel. We also opted for a fish sandwich and the pulled pork sandwich from a limited "kids" type side menu as we were going to dinner in 5 hours. Pathetic. Fish was again a very small piece and then there was the most ill-tasting, Carolina (as advertised) vinegary tasting sandwich imaginable. Two bites and it was left behind. Even the dipping sauce didn't help. While I know we live in a restaurant "measured portion" world, insulting the customer with very small portions and ill-tasting food is not acceptable. Then we performed the true bar acid test on the way out.....What size were the martini glasses. Yes, very small again and could only imagine driving from Acushnet to the water's edge in Westport for a perfect;y measured, over-priced drink. Assuming they use calipers for the drink measuring. Guys, never count on a captured audience to keep on trying your place of business. We returned to the New Bedford area 2 hours later and had a wonderful experience at the Waterfront restaurant. We were starved. Great seafood at the bar, great view, even had 2 sushi rolls. Jennifer was a great server / bartender. The drinks ample and NOT measured and all for less than what we spent for the "micro lunch" at The Back Eddy. On a positive note, your servers were polite and attentive. Phil R. read more

Back Eddy is the place to go after a day at Horseneck. This was my first time in Westport and I had a phenomenal experience with the back eddy. "I have been meaning to try this restaurant for years...ever since it was reviewed in Gourmet Magazine. It was always an out of the way stop because you have to detour off of 95 and drive awhile to get there. Well, I finally made a point to do so and was impressed by the fresh seafood. We were given a free bite to eat ( a seared scallop with mango relish) while we waited for the food. Delicious. We sat overlooking the water, and found the service to be very friendly...above average. For an entree I had the cod loin with Peruvian Beans and local little neck clams and portugese style sausage from Fall River, MA. It was outstanding...The fish was fresh and well prepared. All the ingredients were local except for the beans from Peru. The watercress was from a nearby hothouse and was great. Yes, you pay a price for excellent food. It was about 75 for two with an appetizer and two iced teas. The seafood is some of the best we've had. We had the sea bass special and the fried New Bedford scallops. Both were out of this world good. Cooked and seasoned to perfection. Our server was no frills but very attentive and recommended our meals. The deviled eggs from hell were amazing too. We did have to wait an hour to be seated. While we waited we had a margarita, and bourbon and coke. That ran us 18.75. So all in all a great experience but skip the bar. read more

I go to Westport Mass every few years for vacation, as the beaches are really nice, and there's virtually no one there, ever. The Back Eddy is certainly not the only place to eat around here, but it's the most visible place, probably in all of the Buzzard's Bay area (for those of us from anywhere other than New England, that's the spot between Newport and the Cape). Good drinks and good eats, and a dock that seems to be only for drinking, in spite of the boats tied up there to the contrary. I make my own stuffies at home (again, for those of you not from there, stuffies are stuffed clams), and I think they are better, if only because they have as much clam as I want them to, but they do pay attention to having local and seasonal specials and ingredients, always a plus. I guess that the only, only complaint I would have is that, while drinks are SO MUCH CHEAPER than in New York, food is really expensive here, even by the standards I've grown accustomed to. I had striped bass. It was very good. My son had the Sakonnet lobster and said it was also very good. Gorgeous view but not willing to go up a star for that. Server was pleasant & attentive. Food was good, not amazing. Inconsistent. Shrimp cocktail features 4 colossal shrimp that were tender and delicious. The stuffed clams did not live up to what the other reviewers said. Spicy with corn in it? Did not taste clam chunks and were not served hot. Salmon was moist and delicious. Dessert was not good; chocolate chip cookie sundae featured hard stale cookies. No real wow factor with the food. One of my favorites. Pricy but so many great things. You can also do just apps and keep your costs low. On the water. The place is literally on pilings and has a dock that you can drink on. Pull up in your boat. Stuffed quahogs are excellent. Great fish and chips. Lauren's Lazy Lobster is excellent when available. Black and blue tuna is amazing, you get large cud of what look like great sushi grade tuna. You won't be disappointed with anything. On a recent visit we discovered that the Back Eddy still has very good food, but the prices have gone through the roof. We treated my extended family to dinner and got a bad case of sticker shock at the end of the night... with the entrees averaging $25 and five adults are ordering, I guess I should have known. If I could 2 1/2 stars The place has a great setting and a lively atmosphere, the restaurant was packed on a Saturday night the hostess said it would be a 45min to hour wait, no problem we did not mind. We were able to get a seat at the inside bar and ordered an appetizer the tomato and mozzarella salad it was good, the tomatoes were fresh and the mozzarella was tasty but only had olive oil and I like little bit of balsamic, since we were sitting at the bar I did not ask for any vinegar. Service at the table was not great. When our waitress came over we asked if there are any specials, she said well yes there are, and proceeded to tell us about a dessert special describing the dessert in great detail and then just stopped. One of our favorite spots to visit each summer! The view at sunset is out of this world. Atmosphere is fun, service is good. Usually a significant wait during the busy season, but food comes quickly once you're seated. The mussels appetizer is Ah-mazing! The broth is so good we usually end up soaking it all up with bread so none goes to waste. (We've tried to recreate this dish at home, but nothing compares!) The honky fries are the best - super garlicky and flavorful with a yummy dipping sauce! Oysters are always fresh and well cleaned. You can't go wrong with the bacon wrapped scallops. Lazy lobster casserole is good, too. We find that the drinks can be hit or miss with how they're mixed. read more

We went here with my family to celebrate my birthday. We called at 3:00 (the earliest they answer the phone) to make a reservation for 5 people at 6:30 for the next night (a Sat.) I was disappointed to see that we were placed at basically the worst seat in the restaurant (farthest left, parking lot view) and my husband was sat at the end of our booth with a chair pulled up. The food was good- Scallops wrapped in bacon and succotash. The lobster sauté was a bit over cooked and the portion was quite small (compared to others we've had). Passed on the $8 ea. dessert to go out for ice cream instead. Kinda disappointing for a $220+ meal. It had been about 8 years since we had been and probably won't return real soon. read more
