On a recent visit we discovered that the Back Eddy still has very good food, but the prices have gone through the roof. We treated my extended family to dinner and got a bad case of sticker shock at the end of the night... with the entrees averaging $25 and five adults are ordering, I guess I should have known. We (party of 2) had tried to go there before but the wait on that Sat was about an hour so we left. This time, also on a Sat. we were seated right away outside by the water. Clearly after the summer season it is easier to get seated quickly. Lovely spot overlooking the marina. The waitress was attentive and not overly so. We had several appetizers including the Oysters, Chowder, mussels and cod cakes followed by the fudge brownie dessert. All were excellent. Prices were reasonable as well. We'll be back. read more

The food is pretty good overall, and being right by the water is always a good thing. However, the menu is crazily expensive for what it is, and it's in a seriously remote location. Waterfront Grille in New Bedford or East Bay Grille in Plymouth offer the same sort of atmosphere and menu range, but with significantly lower prices. And honestly, the food is, if anything, slightly better at both. read more

We moved not long ago from the area after 3 years of schooling for my girlfriend at UMASS Dartmouth and this was our vote for the best restraunt around. It is a little pricey in terms of what you get in portions compared to what you pay but so good and such a great location. We always enjoyed their deviled eggs, and even their fries stood out to us not to mention the fish they came with. All in all this made for a great place for a meal after a day at the beach. read more

This place is so over-rated! The location is great. On the waterfront. Nice to sit outside on a hot summer evening (if you can get a table). I have been there several times and have noted that the portions are getting smaller and the prices are getting bigger. Their salad, which runs about $8.00 is served on a small, flat plate. Greens, a couple of cherry tomatoes and some red onion. If you want bread you can pay $4 extra for two pieces of dry, cold cornbread. Special soup of the day: "Smoked fish chowder" was a cream broth with potatoes and one small cube of fish. One diner was complaining that he had no bacon in his chowder as was advertised. We had mussels as an appetizer. There were three of us but only two received wet naps. Plenty of french fries but not much else. Fish and chips are $18-$20. read more

I am giving this review three stars mainly because the view is so breathtaking that it brings the review up a star so this review should actually be at two. Although the food is delicious, it is severely overpriced for the portions and the quality of each dish.The cocktails are also very tasty but once again the prices are high for the area. I will conclude by saying that this restaurant has some of the worst service in the area. The server my friends and I had was very short and it sometimes rude with her demeanor and service. Lets get real. You are paying for the view from this restaurant , not the food We order fish & chips at $ 18.50. Burnt fries and "dirt dry" tasteless fried fish. Then, to make matters worse, we ordered the New Bedford scallops wrapped in applewood bacon. What came was FOUR scallops wrapped in underdone bacon for...$28.00!!! The sangria was watered down ($9) and the only good thing was the 6 oysters on the half shell for $13.50. My honest opinion , go to Margarite's Restaurant on Main Street order the fish and chips or fried clam plate to go , drive down to Gooseberry Island and watch the sunset from there. You'll enjoy it much more than paying for below average food and a great view. Diner beware! Way overpriced...never again! Oh, how about a kids hot dog for $9.00!! read more

The only reason to come here is for the deck bar and view. I live in town and wish I could give 5 stars, I'd really like to! Have eaten here at least once each summer, because I keep hoping it will get better. Food is mediocre. I've had most options on menu and nothing is a standout. The service is consistently bad. The last time we were there, it took her 20 minutes to acknowledge us, she took our order and we never saw her again until she dropped off the check, without a word. Someone else brought app and meal. No one asked us how anything was or even asked us if we wanted a second drink. This last experience was the worst but our other experiences there have been similar. Definitely go for the drinks and view out back, then opt to eat elsewhere. read more

The Back Eddy has many good points. They focus on local food and they have a truly family friendly atmosphere coupled with a high end, considered menu. They indeed do have a great location. That said I was saddened by my experience there this evening. On a chilly Saturday December evening the dining room was also chilly and the fire place that I was dreaming about on my car ride over was turned off. I am puzzled why the wait staff is so poor at this restaurant, why no-one has seemed to have ever tasted the wines that are on the menu, for example. Our waitress this evening was uninformed and inattentive. She was just out of reach chatting with a clutch of other wait staff while we went without water, condiments etc. With a half full dining room the kitchen staff looked bored to tears, the TV in the kitchen was on and the kitchen staff was drinking beer - at 7:00 in the evening, all in full view of the dining room (they have an open kitchen). My poor steak was long forgotten on the grill. I was dismayed to be served a medium-well ribeye after I had ordered a rare/medium rare, truly a sad state for this beautiful grass fed piece of meat. Unsure if my waitress noticed either although I had pressed her when ordering to urge the kitchen to not over cook. An off night indeed! Location or no location, we have had decent meals here before and are seeing the quality in decline, it is sad that the quality is so uneven and poor as this restaurant that could be a gem and an oasis. read more

I met an old friend on Saturday at the restaurant. I have eaten there 5-6 times in past and was looking forward to what has always been a wonderful experience..was I in for a surprise! We experienced LONG waits between visits by the server, although it was early and the restaurant was not busy. We ordered steamers to start..full of gravel. It only takes soaking then in cornmeal/water for a while and they disgourge sand/stones..told the servers and we got "attitude" like what do you expect. Then had pate, which was excellent. It arrived with 2 small pieces of toasted french bread..when we asked for more the server's response was "I will see if that's allowed" and showed great distain for us even asking for more bread (No bread was ever served to the table). The stuffed clams were dry and full of corn? When we ordered the apps we also ordered a bottle of wine from your very small list. The wine arrived when the apps were finished. There was never any attempt to "make it right". A man who appeared to be a manger visited tables all around us, never stopped to ask how we were doing. I do want to say that the fish and chips and fried scallops were very good...and the bathrooms were clean. I am in the restaurant biz, and am somewhat easy to wait on... I did a bit of research and found out that Chris Schlesinger had sold the restaurant. The current management should be ashamed of what you've done to a fine establishment. read more

The best spot for a summer night. Had cocktails and oysters on the half shell on the dock while we waited for a table. Had a good mussel appetizer and scallops wrapped in bacon for a main course. I give this 2 stars as a positive only for the location! I ate here This past Thursday evening and it was hopping which was fine other than the extreme vokune of everyone's conversation that echos against the walls. But regardless, I began by ordering a Mojito which should be in a tall glass but it came in a rocks glass and was too strong...usually I don't complain about a drink too strong ;). Then I ordered the Fish n Chips and asked for asparagus instead of fries which they denied any subs. In this day and age of lower carb consumption you have to allow for this and a no sub rule is stupid. I got my Fish and the wrong veggies. So I ate my fish and was done with it before getting my asparagus and ate that alone. The cole slaw was literally mayo soup and gross. Then I ordered dessert and got the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. Of course it came with whip cream instead. It took forever to get the side of ice cream to go with it. The only saving grace to to bartender's service was her voluntarily removing the whole fish dish from my bill. All in all, not worth revisiting for dinner again or really even drinks for that matter. Westport should welcome a new establishment nearby because there is HUGE opportunity for great restaurants to prevail over this one quickly going downhill. read more

My husband and I dined here on a Friday night. I ordered a sangria, which was small and just okay. We both got chowder, which we thought was great, and an order of littlenecks which were super fresh and sweet. He ordered the pulled pork, and enjoyed it. I ordered the fish and chips, and being a Southcoast local, I had high expectations. They were not met. While the portion was acceptable, the fish was awful...overcooked and almost bitter. I can say one of the worst, and way overpriced at $20. Thank goodness for the fries, or the dish would have been a complete waste. Our dinner for 2 came to $95; a price I don't mind paying for an enjoyable meal, but this did not live up to the cost. read more

Love this place! Been coming here for years, sometimes after the beach and sometimes after touring the vineyard or biking the area. The food is excellent and fresh. Most if not all is locally sourced. I also love the outside dock; I could hang out for hours enjoying the view of the bay and relaxing with friends, a drink and fresh grilled food and the raw bar. The good weather season is too short in New England, so I always get in several trips here during the summer. read more

We have eaten here a number of times in the past. The food is always excellent. Tonight was especially great. We started with the PEI mussels in a spicy sauce. Excellent. Then we ordered two entrees--Apple wood bacon wrapped scallops. Very good. But, what really made the night special was the lobster casserole. This was an outstanding dish. Plenty of lobster to share between two people. Served with asparagus. This was an outstanding dish. A vodka cocktail with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice and a Bass Ale rounded out the evening. This used to be a great restaurant. Great location, great food. In the past few years it has really deteriorated. They get by on the view. It's expensive and the portion sizes are small. I took my wife who has some food allergies there to show her the beautiful setting and share a meal. The waitstaff told us we could not make any substitutions to the menu so we asked to speak with the manager. The manager was cold, uninterested in helping us and made it seem like a real bother to try and come up with some simple substitutions so she could eat a nice meal and not have an allergic reaction in their restaurant. They told us they don't have to do any of this because people come anyway and like it like it is. We live in an area where restaurants have no problem dealing with people with food allergies, gluten sensitivity etc. and welcome all business. In fact it makes them more successful. This place is nothing like what it used to be when it started out and it was worth an hours drive to hang out and get a good meal. We won't be going back. Work too hard to give good money to people who could care less about hospitality. read more

I have been going to the back eddy for several years and have never had a bad experience. The location Couldn't be any better. With the amazing view and relaxed atmosphere it's easy to loose track of time. The service is great and everyone try's to be helpful and accommodating. I asked several different servers on numerous occasions why I couldn't substitute and all gave the response that the plates are structured a certain way for a reason. The sides are made specifically for that one dish fresh each day and there are only enough to go with the number of entrees. This is very understandable and I can see why there are no substitutions. Although it is a bit pricey, it is well worth it. The quantity as well as the outstanding quality of the food is worth every cent. Overall the back eddy is a great place to eat and relax after a long day. I highly recommend it read more

I have been going to the back eddy for four years. It gets worse every time i go. I only go for the bar and the patio deck, always a disappointment. Back eddy could be so much more. The ownership appears bored out of hos socks. The outdoor patio is merely a waiting area to be seated inside. Outdoor entertainment is farly lame. Not summery at all. Once i was there and they had this terrible solo blues artist singing...dead car, lost my girl, its raing, im dying....it was so bad, that even the singer had to beg for people to clap. And this is a suumer scene!? No...it is not. Do not even try to compare this to anything in newport. It could be at least half as good. It is not even 1/32nd as good. Outdoor is cash only. The only other cash only place i know of in town is the China Belle. In fact, while the back eddy at least is modern and has some minor sense of glam and elite yachty wanna be ambiance, its the lacknof trying that permeates the air there. The back eddy therfore is the china belle of westport seafood restaurants. Youve eat well, youll blow a hundred bucks, and youll wish you went to airport grille in new bedford instead, or drove to newport for a real seaside summer outdoor bar and dining experience. Posers! Finally made it to The Back Eddy this past week. It might have been the weather (perfect), the atmosphere, and/or my dinner companions, but I thought it was great, nearly a perfect evening. I liked the food a lot, the menu was appropriate for the venue, and the prices, while not inexpensive, also didn't seem outrageous. My only complaint is the parking lot. It was difficult to find parking and then, depending on whether others were considerate (or not), difficult to get out of the parking space. read more

I try to scale my reviews according to what's available in the area, and there's not much around Westport. That said, the Back Eddy is probably your best bet. It's a big place, perfect setting right on the marina. Great service. I ordered the Striped Bass. Striper has a delicate flavor, and they chose to blacken it like a catfish. All I could taste were the spices. I recommend the simple dishes like fish & chips. read more

I have dined at this restaurant many times and I am always satisfied. My most recent visit, however, left me slightly disappointed. I simply asked the waiter to substitute a different potato side for the potato salad that came with the dish. He rudely explained that the menu states no substitutions. I've heard a lot about The Back Eddy and even though I frequent the area Ive never stopped by. The place has an awesome location, great vibes by the water with live music and a raw bar at the end of the dock on the weekend. The food is amazing - the ahi tuna steak was fabulous, and i really enjoyed the stuffed clams. the parking is kinda limited, and the waitstaff may be good, but I got pretty horrible service this one time I went. I was totally ignored at my table on the outside deck - i was thirsty the whole time and she never checked on us. I'm definitely going to go again and hopefully get better service. read more

Amazing views! A little pricey, but I've never had a bad meal. The acoustics in there make it very loud when there is a lot of people....hard to have a conversation with the person sitting across from you when it's so noisy. This is a terrible restaurant. We went there on sat at 1:00. It was so noisy we couldn't even talk to each other. They didn't have a lunch menu. The menu had 3 sandwiches on it-hot dog, fish sand which, and pork sand which. There were also very expensive restaurants. No lobster roll that u would expect at a seafood restaurant. The chowder was lukewarm. The fish sand which was on a greasy roll. Fries were limp so must have been microwaved. For $50 we felt we were ripped off. On the way out I to,d another couple tht were going in how bad it was. They left. Don't ever go there. read more
