First, I don't understand the complaints about service. The staff here has always been friendly and accommodating on anything I've asked. Want bagels with small holes, they'll oblige. Need them packed for a long trip back home, no problem. Second, the bagels: I'm a New York transplant and know a good NY-style bagel when I taste one. With the possible exception of a couple of places in LA and the SF Bay area (Izzy's Brooklyn Bagels - are you still there?) the Bagelry's are as good as you're going to find west of the Hudson. Good crust, the right chewy density and that slightly yeasty taste and aroma. I was not surprised at all the learn that the owner is also a NY transplant. OK, short and sweet: Had bagels in NY and NJ, these are as good or better. Certainly the best I've had within 1500 miles. Re: Less than stellar reviews folks gave. 1. Yep, the sandwiches are not the cheapest for the size, not really overpriced either though. I find the meats and such to be good quality. Given the massive crowds getting sandwiches, charging less would cause the line to go out the door more often, people getting cold and wet. 2. Toasting... While it could be a "real bagels should not be toasted" thing, I suspect that the problem is that when it gets busy there is no way to speed up the toasting process. Thus, same as above, line going out the door = bad. As it is, even with a long line, it moves pretty quick. My only real complaint is that they don't have whitefish salad. Or whitefish for that matter. For the uninitiated: Whitefish salad is kind of like tuna salad, made without celery and with a rather pickled flavor. All over the place on the east coast. Hands down some of the best bagels you'll find anywhere. New York included. Their bagels are the best. The scene at the Bagelry is "classic Bellingham". It's an organic, laid back place with people from all walks of life lined up for a bagel. All are welcome. The breakfast special is da bomb. I take mine eggs over medium with a poppy seed bagel. Nice. Like bagels? Go here. They also make Bialys here. Finding Bialys outside of Manhattan is quite rare. These guys make real good ones. Most bagels you get elsewhere these days are huge, fat, puffy flavorless rolls with no soul. The Bagelry bagels are dense, satisfyingly chewy and wonderfully flavorful. They have a large number of spreads to put on, all made in house. Yup they make their own cream cheese. Now let's get this whole "But they don't have a toaster" crap out of the way. Think about it for a second. These guys do nothing but make and sell bagels. They even make bialys, something most people have never even heard of. It's a big shop churning out tons of bagels. No other bagel shop can survive in Bellingham very long because the Bagelry is so awesome. If they WANTED to toast your bagel they'd have a toaster. But they don't. Given all that you should conclude that they don't have a toaster for a reason and that reason is a good one. The reason is simple, their bagels are perfect. By definition doing anything more to them would make them no longer perfect. You can't make something perfect more perfect. They make bagels all day and no matter when you walk in there the bagel is going to be fresh and chewy just like a bagel should be. I'm a firm believer that the customer is not always right and I love it when an establishment has the balls to give the customer what they need rather than what they want. I should have checked the reviews and saw that the place was cash only before I came, but that isn't why I'm rating this place so low. (Though in the time I was there, six different people didn't have cards. Suck it up and pay the damn fee, it's 2013). First, the good: my latte was delicious. Now the reason I'm rating them a two: 1) ordered a toasted bagel with lox and a toasted everything bagel with cream cheese. It took 15 minutes for that to come out. 2) My toasted bagels were allowed near the toaster for a few seconds but needed more time because it was basically a slightly warmed up bagel. 3) People who say you don't toast a bagel, correction: if the bagel is well made and can stand on its own, you don't toast it. These taste like ones I can get at the supermarket and hence need some toasting for any kind of flavor. 4) Lox were nothing special. I first tried their pumpernickel bagel when stopping at the co-op and grabbing lunch. I tore the bagel into bite-sized pieces and then dipped them into a house-made hummus. The latter was forgettable but the former filled my heart with joy. Good pumpernickel is a wonderful culinary treat, but excellent pumpernickel is a blessing from the heavens above. Pumpernickel in Seattle is nothing to write home about, but what The Bagelry has is something divine. We made tracks to The Bagelry so I could buy a baker's dozen. Two visual affronts come to mind when recalling my purchase. First, two mounds of flavored cream cheese in the refrigerated display case next to the bagels. I get that cream cheese is mostly fat, but those heaping mounds really drove the point home. But at least the mounds were smoothed into a pleasing ovoid shape? Second, a mannequin perched above the dining area wearing merch from The Bagelry. That mannequin looked like Dina Martina's best friend Doreen, and I don't necessarily believe that is a compliment. The bagels freeze beautifully. As I typed this review I enjoyed a toasted bagel with a wonderful crunch on the crust and a chewy center. I am already thinking about winter and making pumpernickel bagel chips for a hearty mushroom-barley soup. That is if I still have bagels left in the freezer before winter. I'm going to venture to say that if I hadn't opted to slather my whole wheat bagel in peanut butter that I would have been able to discern the quality of the bagel better, but all in all, great breakfast! Agreed, a good bagel doesn't need to be crisp & toasted, just baked to prefection. We got our schmears and a NYT and thoroughly enjoyed being among the locals for what appears to be a town fave. Good coffee to chase it and all is well. I'd try again anytime, which will be soon, since I have a crush on sweet & charming Bellingham now. The best bagels I have ever had. I haven't found anywhere that compares to the Bagelry. My usual is a whole wheat bagel with veggie schmear or a veggie sandwich. As someone who devoted 7 years of my life to the East Coast (learning where all the good Jewish bakeries were and more importantly where the best bagels, bialies and challah are), I cannot even begin to impart on you how hard it is to find a good bagel let alone a good bialy on the West Coast (hell, even finding a bialy in the first place is impossible) Well, low and behold, a trip to Bellingham, a jaunt for breakfast goodness and I stumbled on the treasure trove of oniony, poppy-seeded doughy goodness....otherwise known as a bialy. The owner threatened to "put the biggest curse on me" because I brought a small coffee in from my work. The staff is extremely unfriendly, the bagels are nothing better then something I could make at home, they only take cash, and they are overpriced. I would say stay clear from this place, there are a lot better eateries in bellingham that don't have crazy owners running after you cursing you. He cursed me because I told him I thought he was being rude for hassling me over $1.50 when I come in and buy $16 worth of bagels for my boyfriend and I 3 times a week. He then told me "coffee pays the rent, next time just take your bagels and eat at starbucks". I then got up and left and he ran after me. He said "I didn't say you had to leave, just don't come in with coffee again" I then told him again how much money I spend weekly at his business, and because of his rudeness I would never come again. I'm probably spoiled because I grew up in the northeast and even with tempered expectations, these bagels are very mediocre. They're small, flavorless, and when I ordered a a lox sandwich, I got one tiny slice of salmon in my bagel. I'm not shocked at the high star rating for this place because most raters seem to be native Pacific Northwesterners who don't know what good looks like, when it comes to a bagel (the same reason why all the pizza places in town have a high rating even though they're not that good). A word to advice for those who've never been to New York, New Jersey, Montreal, and any other place known for good bagels. A good bagel is BIG and chewy. When you order a bagel sandwich, it should be piled with your chosen protein; the cream cheese should be generously spread onto the bagel. This place was an easy stop for breakfast while running errands downtown. Although it seemed like everyone who worked there was new (didn't know what was in certain drinks when I asked, wasn't sure what the different meals came with) they were still nice and as helpful as they could be with limited knowledge of the place. I got the quinoa scramble (eggs, quinoa, onion, red pepper, mushroom) it also came with a bagel of my choice on the side. I got everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. My boyfriend got the plain bagel with plain cream cheese (a little boring I know ;) the scramble was pretty good with lots of quinoa and red pepper. I would have liked some more veggies or flavor because quinoa sometimes doesn't have a huge flavor range. However the everything bagel with jalapeño was really yummy- you could tell the cream cheese was fresh and the jalapeños were cut and mixed in (a lot of places use canned jalapeños which is not as tasty). My boyfriend also said his cream cheese was delicious and very fresh tasting. I also ordered their "house tea" a red raspberry tea- although I couldn't get a straight answer about what was in it, it seemed like green tea to me and it was very refreshing on a hot summer day. So overall I was impressed with the quality of cream cheese but needed a little more oomph in my scramble (although for 6.19$- it was impressive for the price point) and would have liked the employees to be a little more knowledgeable about the product. Our favorite is coming after church on Sunday, grabbing our toasted Pumpernickel bagels with Feta or Lox cream cheese and heading home to enjoy with coffee and eggs. Getting hungry just thinking about it! The art on the wall adds a nice touch and I like the wide open and relatively inviting atmosphere. The staff has always been fast and friendly. However, as most people have stated, cash only. Which I get. They say to keep prices low and keep the place local, but man it makes things a little challenging and it was incredibly embarrassing the first time I was there and didn't know and had to step out of line after I ordered to use their ATM. Overall, I have enjoyed my experiences here. I used to have it at 3 stars because it just didn't seem that special to me and only taking cash really bothered me. Ok, so much has improved since last fall! Maybe the new kids are broken in, or the crappy ones have left, or maybe the owner read some reviews and runs a tighter ship now. It's not what I remember teething on as a child, but hey... what is? The bagels are better and fresher lately, they're a little less skimpy with the cream cheese, and the register folks are much more efficient and friendly. The one downside is, if you order anything other than a bagel with an schmear, expect to wait. And wait. And wait some more. Even for a cheese sandwich (I like the muenster one!). Ohhh well. They have plenty of seating for noshing your bagel sandwich or enjoying one of their multiple spreads on a perfectly toasted round. It can get especially busy on weekends and mid morning, so don't forget to bring your cash (CASH ONLY ESTABLISHMENT) and pay your parking meter. We would have rather gone to the cafe just up the street with better reviews, but it was full, and one of us was having ugent bathroom issues, so we went into The Bagelry. Outside of the service, which was excellent--the staff is working hard and very friendly--It was not a good experience. 1. The tables were filthy. Covered with the remnants of a few past meals, it was so busy, none of the counter staff could spare time to come out to wipe down the tables. 2. Cash Only. They accept cash only. No sign on the door states this, the person taking my order didn't let me know. In fact, there is no signage anywhere that states they are only accepting cash, except at the register, which you get to only after you have placed your order and have waited in line for 15 minutes. At the register there is a sign that thanks you for your patience since the checkout system is new and the staff is unfamiliar with it. There, on that handwritten sign telling you about the new registers, in parenthesis at the bottom--as an afterthought--it mentions "We aren't accepting credit or debit cards, yet." Fortunately, I had $10 on me and didn't have to cancel my order. 3. Though, I wish I had cancelled my order. I asked for a toasted everything bagel and a drip coffee. The everything bagel came out warm and crispy, but not browned or toasted in any way. I could have lived with that, but the coffee, even after adding cream and sugar was undrinkable: bitter, burned and far too strong. Bagels are a food group, right? You'd think so from the people at the Bagelry. There is nothing... absolutely nothing like getting a dozen bagels in a bag, and eating one on the way home. So good. Their sandwiches are excellent. All varieties available, including those you make up yourselves. From breakfast to late afternoon, they are there for you. The line for ordering and order delivery is confusing only the first time. They have bits of halva, and other desserts if you are so inclined. If I had lived closer, I would have walked there every day. Fortunately, I lived in Fairhaven so it took a bit of a drive to get there. Of course, one could forgo the dessert and go next door to Mallard's Ice Cream shop. Now talk about delicious -- and inventive. But that's another review! Love this place. Ken the owner hires students from WWU and WCC and treats them well. (I actually hired one of them away from him years ago - Denise was that amazing) He is fiercely local/loyal - so don't bring in your starbucks or bring in a giant ego - you won't be appreciated in our city of subdued excitement. Cash or local checks only - credit cards cost too much to process (and raise prices). The food is quite good - you can tell by all the locals coming in and enjoying. Come early in the day if you want a warm bagel - they don't toast them at the Bagelry (it's somewhat of a religious issue). A warm buttered Sesame Seed bagel is nirvana - love them! My dream breakfast is a farmer's omelette (they'll warn you because it'll take awhile to get to you but it's amazing) with the above sesame or a bialy (slight extra charge for the bialy). I love the charm of this place. The servers are super friendly and it just feels like there have been some good times had here. One of the friends we came here with ate here since he was a wee lad, and said not much has changed (in a good way.) If aint broke don't fix it. But yes, one thing we might agree upon as being 'broke' is that they only accept check or cash. I was going to buy six Bialy's, but instead only bought one because of the cash factor. The bialy's are delicious, the difference between it and a rego bagel is there's no hole, But there is almost a hole, it's just poppy seeds and onion and so forth baked (like the thickness of a sheet of paper) where the hole of the bagel usually is. The Bagelry is one of my favorite lunch spots in Bellingham. I would always grab a tuna salad on garlic. It comes with a pickle and baby bag of chips, and it's was always enough for me to spread out for two meals unless I was absolutely starving. The food is definitely worthy of five stars, but I grabbed an iced mocha and it was actually the worst coffee drink I have ever gotten anywhere. This place is cute, but fairly noisy. They only take cash, so be prepared for that. Their bagels are absolutely fantastic -- perhaps the best I've ever had. Their coffee is great, too, and everything is very reasonably priced. I would not recommend any of the omelettes. They are spongey and utterly flavorless.
