    Crabs were overcooked and mushy.
    Adell K.

Disappointed and soggy Went to the Baltimore House because they are really the only place in Pittsburgh that has whole crabs. This place is on the decline. Not packed, just 4 tables sat in dining room, but took 20 min to just get my drink. The had advertisements everywhere for a new Black Rock cooking experience but it was not yet available in spite of the menus for it placed on the tables. The crabs were mushy and overcooked. The drinks were weak and watery. The service was not great as they gave me a real hard time with my Groupon. Then the roof started leaking, water pouring down, in the middle of the dining room. It's never been a 5 star restaurant but I used to like this place. I really hope that the Black Rock cooking revitalizes this place if not I don't see them lasting much longer.

A kitchy imitation of Baltimore food. I am from Baltimore. While Pittsburgh has a great restaurant scene, sometimes I miss the great Baltimore crab cakes, hard crabs and other seafood dishes. Baltimore House was a huge disappointment. First, the place they wanted to seat us smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. They allow smoking in their bar area and everyone there was smoking. The regular restaurant tables were right next to the bar area without separate ventilation. We were going to leave until they agreed to open another room so that we could breathe. The decor included kitchy imitations of the decor from some classic Baltimore seafood houses. However the decor had seen better days. The rolls, served first were warm and crispy. They were served with real butter. You had to use your steak knife to spread the butter on the rolls. We got the surf and turf special. The prime rib was fattier than most prime rib cuts. It was cooked rare as we had requested. The crab cake was more cake than crab. There were wisps of crab meat but no actual lumps of crab. The crab cake had an odd sour note. We asked about the ingredients and nothing in the list would have accounted for the sour note. The server said that the crab cake contained Old Bay but I could not taste any. I had to hunt to find the lady's room. When I eventually found it, on a darkened room on another floor, I could not find a light switch so I had to prop the door open so I could see. I could not find any toilet paper so I had to use paper towels.

We came here because my mother had been here once with a couple of her friends. I can beleive the other reviews that say it's gone way down hill. And I don't think their sushi side of the business has ever seen a real sushi chef. And whoever said that no smiles were to be had, hit the nail on the head. If I hadn't been there with my aunt, I'd have given our waitress a good smack! But anyway, the fish I had was actually pretty good so there's at least one person there who knows what he's doing. I had stuffed flounder which was served in a very hot pewter pan. There were three pieces wrapped around some seafood stuffing. And it was pretty good and I ate it all! The side dishes were just so-so. I think I had steamed veggies and something else. All in all, it was passable but no better.

Have eaten here before on a couple of occasions and the food here is hit or miss. Stopped in for a quick happy hour beer today and got a Rouge Dead Guy Ale draft. It's a little malt-heavy/sweeter than I prefer but for a buck, I'll drink it and be happy. The downstairs bar area caters to smokers but the dining area on the first floor is non-smoking.

Actually a 5 for service, hostess and waitress were both very friendly and helpful. Salads left a bit to be desired, but our entrees were delicious even if they were frozen. So maybe a 3 for the food.

We always have a great time at the Baltimore House - especially in the summer when it's blue crab season. Good people. Good seafood.

Items that we ALWAYS order are the karaage, stir fried udon wit shrimp tempura, at least 3 skewers, the lychee martinis, Takoyaki, and some variation of toro. The eel was tender and flavorful but the star was the first date roll which was covered in spicy tuna. The Philly roll was good but I probably didn't need it but sometimes you just want the taste. The wasabi was not a hot as I expected. I used much larger portions to get the expected result. Nothing like a good sinus burn. Otherwise everything was great. A couple things that are always ordered is the Kaarage, Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki (best in the city), yakisoba or udon, and gyoza. The takoyaki has a crunchy outside and a good flavor (4/5), and the okonomiyaki is pretty filling (4/5); these were the best two. The yaki-udon with shrimp was ok (3/5) but definitely expensive for what it was and the quantity; they also don't add much shrimp, despite the up charge. The sake no shioyaki was below average for salmon (2/5) and very expensive for that amount they give you. Similarly, the onigiri is almost entirely rice if you add salmon (2/5). We were fortunate to find a parking spot for our vehicle in front of the restaurant, but some free street parking is supposed to be available. The employees promptly and politely served us. The menu listed appetizers (e.g., gyoza and takoyaki), soups (e.g., wonton and tom kha), noodles and rices (e.g., pad Thai, lo mein, and yakisoba), noodle soups (e.g., tom yum and duck noodle), specials (e.g., peanut chicken, steak teriyaki, and grilled mahi mahi), sushi (e.g., salmon, octopus, red snapper, bluefin tuna, and yellowtail), poke bowls, ramen, bento boxes, and desserts (e.g., mochi ice cream, taiyaki, and mango sticky rice). Here are my ratings for what we ate: Thai Iced Tea - 5 stars - My husband really enjoyed the flavors of the tea, milk, spices, and sugar. Umai Sampler - 3.5 stars - This appetizer contained 2 crab rangoon, 2 spring rolls, 2 steamed dumplings, and 2 shrimp tempura. Green Curry Noodle Soup - 3.5 stars - This soup had a large serving size and was filled with nicely cooked rice noodles and vegetables such as broccoli, bell peppers, eggplant, and basil. I did think that it could have contained more coconut milk for a sweeter taste. Furthermore, I had requested a spicy level of 5 or medium, but the waiter recorded 4 and brought me broth that tasted more like 8. Green curry is my favorite Thai food, and this one did not quite match my expectations. Umai Street Noodle - 3 stars - My husband ate this main course. He had requested a spicy level of 2, and it was that level. It contained egg noodles, BBQ pork, wonton, bok choy, bean sprouts, and scallion. He said, "That was as average as average could be." The total price was $55 plus tax and tip.
