I read several reviews of various hotels in Ashland before selecting the Bard's Inn for our weekend getaway, and I'm confident I made the right choice. A lot of the complaints that I had read stated that they felt the experience wasn't worth the price tag (our room's base rate was $209 for a Saturday night, plus an additional fee for our two dogs), which is normally more than I like to pay for a one-night stay anywhere, unless I am specifically seeking a fantastic...nay, outlandish hotel experience. I don't travel for the hotels (and I don't understand the people who do), except on very special occasions. That said, when we rolled up to the Bard's Inn, I was initially a bit trepidatious. It looked like a motel, albeit one splashed with a medieval-adjacent coat of paint. I didn't realize at first that the hotel is spread across three buildings, each on different corners of the same intersection, with different room types in each building. While we ended up in the motel-like section (where the pool, office and dining hall are located), the other two look more like apartments, so depending on your booking, your room style may vary wildly. We checked in, and were given a end room on the bottom floor, a huge bonus for us, with two pups in tow! Our room was spacious enough for two adults, a teen and two dogs, without feeling cramped. Décor: functional without being fancy. TV had DirectTV, which is sluggish and unresponsive on its best day, but we barely used it. Mini-fridge included in the cabinet came in handy for insulin that needed to be refrigerated. Continental breakfast in the morning hits all the standard notes, but it will be ravaged by 9:00am, so get their early! Pool is open from 7:00am (what?! awesome!) until 10:00pm, and is a nice place to cool off on a balmy yet humid summer evening. The beds were firm yet very comfortable, the pillows downy soft and wonderful, among some of the best I've encountered at any hotel; my wife slyly suggested attempting to cram the mattress and pillows into the back of our SUV to take home, but I was able to dissuade her...barely. Where the Bard's Inn truly shined, however, were in the places that mattered most: customer service and...what's the real estate cliché? Oh yes: location, Location, LOCATION. No other hotel has such convenient access to the heart of Ashland's downtown area, and finding another pet-friendly hotel pushes you out even further. You can't ask for a better location, so I'm not terribly surprised to have to pay extra for it. As for customer service, each staff member we interacted with, at check in, check out, and in-between, was friendly, personable, helpful and pleasant to talk to. I've rarely ever been so impressed by the quality of care, concern and...eagerness is probably the best word, than I have been with the staff of the Bard's Inn. That alone earns them five stars. In short: if you're traveling with pets, the Bard's Inn is your best choice. Heck, it's close to your only choice, if you want to be close to the action, but that shouldn't detract from its perks. And even if you're pet free, you can't ask for a better location, helpful and friendly staff, and comfier beds than this place. You have been warned, knaves!: Bite your thumb at this hotel, and there may be more than one Shakespearean tragedy during your stay in Ashland, in addition to the ones being performed at the Allen Elizabethan Theatre! read more

Front desk Staff was friendly and the location is great. Other than that, it's a no from me dog. The room was not comfortable, and the facility is old in general. More importantly, I sustained damage to my truck from a mis-marked overhead clearance. The general manager, Malcolm did not return communications. The owner Jonathan claims no liability, even though it is clear at the sign that many people have hit that low clearance. Very dissatisfied with their position on the issue. Most uncomfortable pillow, mattress and low quality bedding. The pillow was a 12"x12" square like a throw pillow with no substance. The top blanket was a scratchy fabric that was paper thin. Our stay at The Bard's Inn was horrible. There was a myriad of technical problems (room smaller than what we booked, no hot water, broken phone, etc) all of which have been covered by other reviews. The part of our stay that prompts me to write a negative review is that we experienced a dangerous and violent situation at the hands of another guest. We stayed in the Sonnet Building, which has a very small parking lot. We returned from a day excursion in Ashland. There was a woman in the parking lot who had what appeared to be her belongings spread out on the ground, as if she had unpacked in the parking lot, which is unusual behavior. The scene was extremely noticeable due to the very small size of the lot. We stepped out of our car, intending to walk directly to our room, (508). This woman, who was standing no more than 25 feet away, threw a glass bottle at us. The bottle shattered as it landed on the ground in front of us. I was immediately terrified. My husband stayed with our car, where our dogs were in the back seat, and I called 911. The Ashland Police Department responded. They told us that legally, they could not escort her off the property unless the property owner, who is a man named John, said he was willing to have them do this. John refused to have this woman evicted from the property. The police eventually left because there was nothing they could do. My husband and I decided we needed to leave, as this woman had acted violently toward us. I packed our belongings while my husband stood by at our car to make sure she did not vandalize it. This woman started acting so belligerent again, that the police had to respond a second time, and by this time, a woman who lived next to the hotel had also called the police because her young children were outside and she feared for their safety. Additionally, there was a group of high school students staying at the hotel. This woman was so belligerent and out of control that the hotel staff had to evacuate them from the building. The police eventually arrested her. I went to check out and requested that we not be charged for our stay. The clerk put me on the phone with John, who told me that we were DEFINITELY getting charged for our stay. I was in shock. We were on vacation and had just experienced a situation that was unseemly, violent, and frightening. Do not stay at this hotel. It is unsafe. There are other hotel brands in Ashland. The property owner does not care for the safety and security of the hotel guests. I have reached out to Best Western Corporate and am trying to have this situation rectified. read more

While this is a generally nice property for visiting the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, I don't understand how it qualifies as a BW Signature Collection. The hospitality is pretty much the worst I've ever experienced at any Best Western. The staff is inexperienced, unhelpful, and unfriendly. We visit Ashland 5 or 6 times a year and have stayed here a number of times. But we won't stay here again. This property would benefit from new management. Until then, there are better places to stay in Ashland. read more

Pros: rooms are cute and clean, staff are friendly, and it's very walkable to shops and restaurants! Cons: The walls are absolutely paper thin, the room next to it us had the news on late at night and it was on again by 5 AM and I could hear it word for word. I could also hear snoring, conversations, and bathroom usage. read more

We have stayed here many times and request the same room which is considered a deluxe because of the location and small balcony. This time we I'll perhaps be my last time staying here. 1) the front desk could not find our reservation by name or confirmation number and tapped their fingers while I nervously looked for my email. Then found out the hotel reversed my name so alas they found me. 2) At 3am the air conditioning unit decided to break and leaked water drip drip drip all night 3) lovely people above us decided to play leap frog with their beds until 1am (not the mote's fault) but did not add to the other two problems. Overall for $265 a night it is not worth the price for an ok room. read more

Third trip here in the last two months for my new job. Based in the San Francisco, Bay Area, have tried a few of the hotels around here that have been phenomenal. Everyone kept saying positive things about my family and I decided to book here for my current work trip. I have to say that I am extremely disappointed. On top of there being three different properties across the street from each other, the breakfast was terrible, our room look like it has been touched in 30 years. The AC didn't work the TV didn't work. On top of that the floor was black. We walked in our socks and they were black. We asked for bedsheets so we could put it on the floor because we were grossed out by walking around. Right the portable AC unit was dripping all night and on that bedsheet it soaked up all the mold off the ground. read more

I typed my previous review on my phone, and it has a lot of typos. I was trying to say that there were tampon wrappers in the bedside table. There was a big scratch on the wall, and the lock on the screen door did not work. We were next door to a smoking room where the people would stand out on the balcony to smoke, blowing directly into our room. The rooms were not very clean and had an odd odor. The staff was friendly, helpful and professional. No complaints there. read more

Unexpectedly impressed by the Bard's Inn! They went beyond normal expectations from when we booked reservations directly by phone and throughout our multi-day stay. Excellent customer service, good overall value for money, and a great downtown location. Complimentary buffet breakfast (which we usually walkaway from in search of something better) had several tasty hot offerings. To our shock, the coffee was really good--we like a full roast and drink it black--so good we usually had two cups. The Bard's Inn offers standard or luxury rooms (we were happy with the standard) that are situated on ground level or one floor above. All have easy outside entry, usually close to where you've parked. The inn's perks and special touches didn't go unnoticed. We appreciated the free parking, the hospitality bag given after check-in (bottled waters, snacks, and a helpful map of downtown), free Wi-Fi, Kurig system in each room (but don't like the bleached paper cups because they alter the taste of any beverage), small frig, newspaper waiting outside our front door each morning, and that they offer designated rooms for patrons traveling with pets. Despite the fun downtown offerings day and night, and nearby Mt Ashland ski area, winter is offseason so the holiday season is an excellent time to visit Ashland. read more

Cockroach visitation! I stayed here just one night. The room was pleasant enough, although a little noisy with the people upstairs. Imagine my shock early in the morning spotting a very large cockroach running around my bathtub. I do not do well with any kind of creepy crawly vermin and of course did not cope well. There was no question of a shower after I had smooshed it with the bathmat internally, screaming all the while. And of course, who could eat breakfast after that? Talked to the clerk who was apologetic but could do very little except take the pet fee off, which was only $20 perhaps for the fact that the cockroach only visited for one night. The manager was completely unsympathetic and did not offer any further credit well, I believe the room should've been partially or fully comped considering my experience,. I will never ever ever come back to this place because I firmly believe where there is 1 cockroach, there are 101 lurking in all the dark places. read more

Outrageously overpriced. Our two room "suite" was really one room with a former hallway partially made into a makeshift bedroom. Didn't help that the top step to our door was dangerously wobbling or that you had to cross a busy road to use the pool (much smaller in person). The one star is for the nice people in the front office but otherwise I would never stay here again. Although I appreciate that one of the buildings is pet friendly, the rooms were so small you could barely get around the bed, and the comforter was heavy, with some kind of slippery material that literally made it slide off of you constantly. All night long fighting the stupid comforter! And no microwave in the room either. The air conditioner would not go on fan only, and was very noisy. And you couldn't open the window because all the cars were parked right there. Never again! read more

After a long days drive, and in search of a pet friendly overnight hotel, Bard's was the only place available. Upon checking into our room, the room wreaked of mildew, must, and dust. Upon inspection, we found several spots of mold. We left after about 90 minutes of searching for a new hotel. Upon checkout, no refund was offered and what was worse is the kid working the desk had no element of kindness or empathy. I would not recommend anyone to stay here. read more

Unless you like the smell of dog crap I would not recommend staying in one of their pet friendly rooms. I would understand there might be some pet odor but this was off the charts. Had I not been exhausted we would have complained and left. As it was the 7 hours we slept every time I woke up on the too soft worn out mattress the first though was that smells horrible. read more

Visited recently for a night and can't wait to return! The rates were competitive and the room very charming and well appointed. We stayed in the complex across the street from the main lobby (there are three buildings I think, all located close together) and loved the quiet setting and relaxing views out our windows. If you're in town for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival then this location will work really well for you. It's just past the main downtown area so you get easy access with a little more tranquility than being right near the bars and restaurants next to Lithia Park. We checked in very early and they were surprised but accommodating. When the room was ready later they phoned us to make sure we were able to get settled as early as possible. I've stayed in a number of local hotels over the years and this place is my new go-to spot when in town. Our 2 Queen bed unit was huge and really relaxing. read more

Stay AWAY There is no other option. We stayed in Room 501. Imagine staying in some room that was built behind a boiler room in a basement. Or imagine staying a hotel in the poorest section of town in a foreign country. Dirty, dark, and filthy - beyond imaginable. Dead flies and bugs. The windows have lost their seal and are permanently fogged up. It was very very dark because there were not enough lamps. Can it be worse? I've been to Ashland so many times you could almost call it my second home. I've stayed at many hotels in town, but I adore The Bard! In peak season, you're lucky to be able to snag a room here. The rooms are comfy with big, soft beds, snappy sheets and towels, fridge, microwave, tv, good sized bathrooms and a cute little coffee station under the sink. Parking is plentiful. The buffet breakfast is not your usual hotel breakfast, but gloriously hot and delicious. They have a wide variety of options and vegetarian-friendly bites too. The hotel is pet friendly giving Fido treats at check in along with a little welcome note. The heated pool is open year round and is a delight is the middle of a snow storm. After all of these wonderful notes about The Bard, you would think nothing more could be said, but let me continue. The staff is charming, helpful, knowledgeable and downright nice. They will do whatever it takes to make your stay perfect in every way. And to top it off, the hotel is one of the closest to downtown. You are a mere 4 minute walk to the heart of the theatre district, shopping and lots of great food. Now you understand why they are booked throughout the summer! The rates fluctuate with the seasons, but browsing online can be beneficial to finding the good deals. So what are you waiting for? read more

We met friends here as a mid-way point between our homes for a visit. The friends we met had stayed here in the past and recommended it. Our friends were stunned with how far downhill the place has gone since their earlier visit particularly in amenities and service. Beds were most uncomfortable we've ever slept in. Air conditioner barely worked. Despite all this our biggest complaint is THE ONLY TV WAS PAY-PER-VIEW. No basic free channels for news, etc. Don't fall for the star ratings on the Best Western web pages; AAA gives them 2 stars. We will not stay here again and if you are planning travel on a budget this summer it's certainly no place to bring kids unless you have more money to pay just to watch TV. We visited during Covid times, and this Inn was very. Comfortable and accommodating. The pool and the jacuzzi we're open. Our king suite was big and charming for the whole family. Downtown and the park and easy walking distance. The whole time we were there, in the Tudor building, I couldn't help but envision myself as the star actress playing Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare on the stage. A girl can dream! read more

I will say that the bed was comfortable. but, I called a while back and told someone I wanted a first floor room or one accessible by elevator. Behold, there were none available and of the buildings that have elevators, only one was working. There were no handicapped spots in the lot either. I believe this is a fine-able offense. There also were not enough parking spots for rooms. Maybe lining the parking lot would help because people left to their own devices don't know how to park properly. Your front desk was a rude and didn't really care what I had to say. just "sorry" I was hoping when the Bard became a Best Western again, it would be better. It's worse. We stayed here 2 weekends ago with our family. Upon our check in we discovered that the Television and phone were both not working. The person working the front desk tried to troubleshoot the issue with the Television but never did get it working and informed me that they booked the rooming knowing it didn't work. The front desk worker assured me that the room would be discounted for the inconvenience but that he wasn't authorized to do so and we would need to speak to the manager, Chloe, who wasn't working that night. The next morning I talked to the front desk person who told me the manager wouldn't be in until the next day and that she would call me. I waited to hear from her and then called back. The women I spoke to said the manager is rarely in and has no set hours. I was lucky enough, after calling every day for 3 more days was finally speak to the manager who told me she would resolve the issue by refunding all but $120 of the room cost ( not great but at least it was something) and asked for my email so she could send a confirmation. 5 days later,no refund, no email. Then I get an alert on my bank app of a charge to my card from Bards Inn. I8 immediately called and hit the jackpot that the manager was there. She said the pending amount was a refund and was unapologetic for all of the time I had wasted trying to simply communicate with her. She then told me that if I wanted anything to be done I would have to talk to the owner! Good luck with that one, its nearly impossible to reach the manager. I checked my bank today and saw that the full charge is still on my card, no pending refund in sight. I just got off the phone with the front desk and wouldn't you know it, the manager is in a meeting. Bottom line, there is no accountability at this hotel. If there is an issue, your out of luck. I believe that its worth mentioning that the beds were at least 10 years old, the wallpaper was peeling off the walls and the last remodel appears to have been done prior to 2000. The rooms are so small and the coffee pot is stored under the bathroom sink. Also, the breakfast is a complete joke. Other hotels have done a great job during Covid and even now there is no reason to keep the breakfast room closed. This hotel is just lazy and incompetent. The last time we had stayed here there was a bag of weed in our room and masks shoved in the chair. When we mentioned it at check out they didn't even bat an eye. I would have liked to have left a good review, but the hotel manager has made it impossible to do so. I have been trying for 2 weeks to communicate with the manager and she is nearly impossible to speak with. I can assume the owner is a total nightmare if he is allowing his business to run like this. I would definitely recommend staying at the Stratford Inn. Better location, better breakfast, and and overall better experience. read more

When we buy our tickets for the following Ashland summer season in November, we make our room reservations here. That's about as far ahead as you have to reserve to get a room at this ultra-convenient location. It's about 2 blocks to the theaters, albeit mostly steep uphill. So I don't have to drive to the theater and hope there's a space when I get back, but when I go out at other times I don't have much problem. The front desk staff can be creative at creating parking spaces when the marked ones are full. It has three buildings; I've stayed both in the original, which while old is sturdy and clean, and the somewhat newer and creakier one across the main street. I've always found the front desk staff to be friendly, helpful, and forthcoming with information. The only problem is that the complimentary breakfast is pretty pathetic. But that's OK; there's lot and lots of good breakfast restaurants in Ashland, two of them only a block away. read more

Bed spread wasn't clean and there was hair in the sheets, we had to ask for new ones. Pretty disturbed for an ashland experience to be real, because this hotel has a lot of potential. Booking online with a wedding block of rooms/code was easy and reasonable in price. Checkin was quick and easy. It was also nice to have a free continental breakfast. After check in, things went downhill. The WiFi code wasn't working, so when I called the front desk, all the woman at the front desk said was, "I'll see what our IT department can do." Based on her tone with me, I gave up on the WiFi because I guessed they didn't have an IT department and she never mentioned any kind of follow up or work around. After the first night, we requested our room to be cleaned that day and requested extra towels. Same woman answered and said they don't normally do that, but she would put the request in. We came back from the wedding that night and the room wasn't cleaned, so my husband and I shared the last towel the next two days. The woman at the front desk honestly just seems miserable in her job and was condescending in her tone whenever she spoke; I feel bad for her. It was our first time in this lovely town and had the first amazing first impression by the extremely helpful receptionist David, not sure if he still works here but he represented the business very well and deserves to be credited I always forget to leave a review but thinking about Oregon, we had the best time in Ashland specifically and big part of it is thanks to him for giving us a positive experience at this Inn :). read more

Clean beds, fluffy pillows. Street noise if your room is above the office. Limited parking and spontaneous availability, no doubt due to the fantastic location in the downtown area. I called to make my reservation and was given a discount as a first-time customer. Great touch! The room was fine, nothing too special. There was a weird, sticky patch on the carpet between our two beds. I don't even wanna know... and the cable was inexplicably unplugged when we arrived. Maybe they're being conscious about vampire power drainage - no big deal, husband moved furniture to remedy the issue, but a heads up would have been helpful. Hot tub was fully functional, and staff even gave permission for a quiet, after hours soak. Nice. Breakfast in the dining room was adequate, they even included gluten-free muffins. But they could do better with vegan options. Guacamole and fruits just aren't enough. Where were the hashbrowns? The passion fruit juice was delicious. The view out our room window was by far the best part. Those rolling hills on a clear spring day... no doubt, if the Bard had visited Ashland he would have stood at these windows, agog. I booked a room on booking.com and called to verify reservation I spoke with A gentleman, he told me never go through 3rd party for booking and that I was still in my cancellation period to cancel and he would book a room for me. Long story short I paid for two rooms and stayed in one! They will not refund you and will tell you to go through the 3rd party but payment is processed through BARDS IDo not go through and third party if you want to stay here!! You will have at least 3 people reprimand you for booking on a third party. Zero customer service. Hotel great people working front counter not so great! Plenty of other places in Ashland to stay I recommend you look elsewhere. Now it four people from Bard's inn that has reprimanded me for using a third party to book with them!!
