This restaurant is definitely more for the atmosphere than the food, but that wasn't bad either. Easily one of the coolest places to go for a meal. An old barn turned into a restaurant. Beautifully decorated and if you are lucky enough to get a seat near the window, excellent scenery. We went for the salad bar for lunch. The ingredients out were fresh nothing out of the ordinary food wise. Good soups and fresh bread. Good meal for the price. Service was quick and friendly. "TheBarn" leads you to believe you are going to sit down to some good home cooked food with its charming ambiance of a restored Barn & beautiful country views overlooking a pond. The staff was friendly & that's as far as this 1 star rating will get. If you like fresh out of a can salad bar toppings, a bread bar that has an array of various stale cornbread & other mystery bread slices then you've found hospital cafeteria food heaven. The soup was incredibly salty & the ribs & corn were shriveled up looking like they were sitting in a steam pan for days. Was in Wooster for the day visiting Ramseyer Farms and decided to head to The Barn Restaurant for dinner since it was so close. It wasn't bad. The place looks really cool on the outside and is okay but sort of awkwardly quiet on the inside. We ate in the upstairs dining area, not the buffet downstairs, so I'm not sure what that was like. I ordered the New York strip steak with baked potato and it was quite delicious. The flavor of the steak was very good and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. Had a piece of the pie loaded with different types of berries and it was pretty good too. If you're at Ramseyer Farms for fall activities, this is a great place to go due to the location, but not sure if I would make a special trip just to go here. If not for the steak flavor, I'm thinking I would have gone with three stars. read more

This is such a neat restaurant! It has a cool atmosphere with authentic farm decor. On busy nights, the waiting room has a bunch of cool things to do such as games, operating model trains, and even a live bee hive. We have been coming here for years. I would recommend the buffet over their menu. Some of the food on the buffet is clearly not made on site but most of it is. Their salad bars on both floors are very good and kept well stocked. The country farm theme is a nice change from other places we frequent. First I need to make it clear that my review is based on the buffet in the basement that they only have on weekends. I haven't been to the upstairs restaurant so I can't comment on that. The buffet food is just really good country food. They had a lot of meats to choose from. Ham, turkey, roast beef, shredded beef, meatloaf, sausage, and my favorite the swiss steak. I may be forgetting some but they had a better variety of main dish meats then larger buffets I have been to. Our service today was excellent. I don't think my cup ever got below half full because the waitress was on top of it. The only thing I didn't like was the bread because it was dry, but everything else was so damn good it didn't matter. It is smaller then some buffets but what they lack in size they make up for in food quality. It's almost an hour away from me but I plan on going back often. It's worth the drive for us. Everyone in the family was happy, including my pickiest kid who normally has a complaint everywhere we go. Edit to add that it was $15 and some change a person but that price included the drinks. I'm glad some have had good experience here but the last time we ate there, we chose to eat in the basement with the buffet. All our waitress had to do was clear empty plates and fill our drinks. Service was horrible and we were there very early in the evening with almost no one there so the poor service was no due to her being busy. We could see her chatting to other waitresses and ignoring us. I actually moved our dirty plates to a empty table nearby myself. Anyways when we left the cashier asked how service had been and we said it was poor. The cashier goes on to say they have had several complaints lately about our waitress. OK, I guess management doesn't want to address this continuing problem. The food was ok, typical buffet type servings. We won't be back anytime soon. If we do we'll eat upstairs off the menu maybe we'd get better service up there. read more

The atmosphere gets a 4 to 5 star. Relaxing with the pond and feeding the fish and ducks. There are a few nice shops to stroll through while you wait. The food is decent but the selection has been cut down over the years. (No more fried chicken at a "home cooked " country restaurant ). We had a party of 15 and our waitress seemed more stressed than helpful. Maybe they are short staffed. We will be back but more for the pond than the food. read more

My folks were visiting from out of town and being a recent transplant to Wooster I decided to check out The Barn. We opted for the buffet which meant we were seated in the basement area which smelled and looked like an old church basement. The fried chicken was dry, the macaroni and cheese had hair in it and the apple crumble was rock hard. I mentioned our disappointment and experience to the manager on the way out. He just shrugged his shoulders and seemed to care less. I'll never eat here again. read more

First time visit was less than expected... Atmosphere is nice but the service fell a little short. We ordered from the menu as the Buffet was not available at the time of our visit. When our food arrived it was cold and less than tasty. I had the BLT with 4 strips of bacon on toast that was as dry as a cracker. The wife had the grilled chicken breast that was rather bland, baked potato was cold and dry with a side of corn that barely had any flavor at all. The two stars are for the soup and salad bar... mediocre at best. We may return for the Buffet some day and see how that goes. The grounds were lovely though. read more

Two steps down from the Cracker Barrel. First impression from the parking lot, building looked well maintained, surrounding property attractive. Interior dark on a sunny day decorated with farm and country style stuff. The table was poorly cleaned, sticky spots and the desert menu that was on the table should have been thrown out it was so dirty. Nothing was homemade. Straight from the box, freezer or can. In general you will get the reviewers that love something and the ones that hate it (most often the ones that hate it as shown by the other reviews here.) First, I think some people need to get off of their high horse. I am not saying that you need to lower your expectations, but it sounds to me like some reviewers will never be pleased or will never know how to try anything different than they are used to. - I am sorry if someone elses cooking does not taste like your mothers or grandmothers cooking that you grew up with, such is life. If you want Mennonite or Amish cooking, or real Amish furniture, toys, etc. Then go visit a real Amish family that actually hosts "true" experiences and you can get a whole different experience. - It is comfort food, if you want healthy go somewhere else, simple enough? - If you don't like the atmosphere or the lighting, then that is fine (but there are many places that you can sit and have a completely different experience.) It is a different experience and the atmosphere is the way it is for a reason, if you want to go eat at a bar with tv's to watch a sports game, then go to the many different chains that serve the same food and have an identical atmosphere. God forbid we step out and try something a little different, I think I will go back into my little bubble now. /rant On to my experience: I personally love the atmosphere and lighting and the whole barn is a great experience for kids. - My favorite spot is upstairs so you can see out the big windows and see the pond, beautiful area. - We take international business customers here every time they come to visit and it is always a highlight for them. They like the different experience rather than the same thing they are always used to. - Soup and Salad bar is my favorite, great variety and very filling, no need for anything else. Oh and the bread with the honey spread is fantastic! - Love the Ribs and Fried Chicken, but usually just get Salad bar. Their Dessert is also fantastic. A party of 12 today; 11 ordered buffet; I ordered a crispy chicken wrap from the menu. Wrap was very slow coming from the kitchen and was hands down the worst wrap I have ever had. Wrap was soggy and open at both ends so food fell out of other end when you took a bite.(Wraps typically are folded at one end so food stays inside the wrap). Big disappointment for $8+. No offer was made to send it back to the kitchen or to replace it.Unlikely I will be going there any time soon and definitely will not order from the menu. read more

Highly recommended, greatly disappointed. Drove more than 50 miles. Had buffet. Salad bar had iceburg lettuce-no spinach or romaine. Come on-iceburg is SO 70's! Chicken and mashed potatoes were good. None of the rest was appetizing. Bread bar had no fresh items, desserts not so good, either. I wish we'd gone to the buffet in Wooster on '83! Would've been better and less expensive! The Barn is a unique place located in a small town just outside of a rural area. The Barn plays up the hometown country setting with a beautiful location. The Barn offers two types of meals; a sit down restaurant and a buffet service. The buffet is only Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I am only able to review the buffet portion of the facility. We visited on Fathers Day, looking for a nice setting to enjoy an afternoon lunch. What a mistake. I have never ate at a restaurant where the previous days food was served. My family was the second group to be seated. So my review and comments about old food cannot be dismissed as if a tremendous amount of traffic came through the buffet lines before me. The restaurant opens at 11:00 a.m.; 15 minutes later I am walking through the line; I should have left then. The bread trays were picked through, obviously no one in front of me took bread. Next to the bread was the desserts; various trays of cakes half gone. Salad bar, large and capable of looking great had a half bowl of wilted lettuce with brown edges and the crocks were half empty. Chocolate pudding crock was near the bottom with pudding hardened on the sides. Main course was the worst. Cornbread dressing; dry and hard. Meatloaf so hard my wife could not poke it with a fork; instant mashed potatoes were bland and gravy came from cans :( Cut up sausage stewing in water and salisbury steak which was a dried out hamburger soaked in cheap gravy. When I pulled in I truly expected more; again a beautiful location and atmosphere. But $14.95 for a buffet with horrible food is unacceptable. I have to believe the food served on Friday is fresh but the leftovers on Sunday to save money is not good. Management should have known this past weekend being Fathers Day was a wonderful opportunity to shine. They dropped the ball and lost future business. As we left we looked in the dining room portion and had wished we had chose to eat there instead. I would not recommend the buffet to anyone. We went to the Barn for a birthday party. I had a large group and asked for a table for 25 - 30 people. I was told I needed to give manager a exact number. Then I was told that normally they do not seat until everyone is there. I had 24 people there already. Then we ended up being at 2 different tables. However the waitress did a great job making sure we had refills etc. I was disappointed in they way I was talked to by the manager and the comments that he made to me about seating. read more

My sister went to the College of Wooster for 4 years and I believe my brother attended for two years. During that time, we (as a family) became familiar with the area restaurants. My sister told us she had heard about a restaurant called "The Barn" which became a joke the first time we tried finding it. "Is that the Barn? Is that the Barn?" (Each time we'd ask we'd point to a random barn on the road, making my sister's anger and frustration heighten.) I have only gotten the extended buffet one time, but all other times I've ordered "The Old Time Salad Wagon." It features various types of lettuces, toppings, soups, breads, and this amazing honey butter you put on their tasty cornbread. I love all of the breads and soups, and the salad is always fresh. I have never gotten ill eating here (with digestive issues, of course). I typically have issues with how restaurants clean produce. If it's done with chemicals, I cannot eat the salad items. They have various fruits and other types of cream-based salads. You never really know what "extras" they might have on there. This always fills me up so I never order from the regular menu. Everything I've ever seen anyone order always looks fresh and home-cooked. Mind you, this is not reviewing the downstairs extended salad bar. It's always fun to feed the geese, ducks, pond creatures, and there are all kinds of shops in that vicinity. for what this place is (I went to the "bottom" level for the dinner buffet) I was pleased overall .. the chicken + meatloaf + turkey on the meat buffet were all tasty .. I did not enjoy the what looked like carved beef in gravy .. had an over powering taste of green bell pepper that was not at all pleasant .. I did not try the ham/sausage/swiss steak/or pulled pork .. the mashed potatoes + mac/cheese + corn (yes it was from a can) from the side dish station were good .. the potatoes were instant but did have flavor .. I opted for the yellow/chicken gravy since the brown/beef gravy had the look of sloppy joe's .. was quite "chunky" .. did not try the canned green beans nor what I think was a potato dish that was heavily crusted in burn corn flakes & literally stuck to the sides of the steam pan .. I also did not try the wild rice simply because I am not a fan .. LOVED the salad bar .. will definitely check out the upstairs all you can eat sald + soup + bread table at another time .. would have preferred to see some dinner rolls vs only bread as starch option but we dealt with it .. tried only the chicken noodle soup (was getting full!) & it tasted home made .. had the apple crisp w/vanilla ice cream for dessert & it was delicious .. the staff while friendly I gotta say the uniforms they have the ladies wearing look totally sloppy .. the "mennonite" style dress & aprons do not flatter any of the ladies that we saw .. they look dirty & hang on them like burlap sacks .. add to it the modern looking tennis shoes they all wore & I think the intent of having them in an old fashioned type outfit suitable for the locale & cuisine gets lost .. khaki slacks w/a denim shirt would be more appropriate .. flatter the ladies body types & still give that country feel .. something management should consider .. what they were now just look sloppy & dirty read more
