My wife and I decided to drive the 50 minutes from our house to try "The Barn's" buffet. The restaurant above, and the buffet down below in the basement, are two separate entities. We did not go upstairs to the restaurant, so I have nothing to say about that part of the establishment. The dining area of the buffet reminded us of a old church basement. Low ceiling, many, many, rectangular tables all covered with the same plastic tablecloth. Nothing on the walls to speak of for decoration. If you're looking for a cozy ambience, I'm afraid this isn't it. The staff was friendly and efficient and the place looked clean. The food was okay. There was a nice variety of ham, meat loaf, chicken, ocean perch, shrimp, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, etc. The salad bar was exceptional. It was clean with a lot of variety. There was an area with assorted breads, butter and spreads. In the way of desserts, they had apple crisp, brownies, cookies, sheet cakes, and self serve ice cream. Again, the food was okay. Nothing stood out. Would we drive 50 minutes again and come back? I don't think so. read more

My husband and I stopped here on our way to Berlin. I have liked this place in the past and when we had out of town guests we would always bring them here....but not after today --1/2/18-- ... The burger was so dry and tasteless he didn't even finish it... My salad bar was also pretty tasteless EXCEPT for the sour green peas!!! I believe the reason for that is when they re-stock they just go ahead and but the new right on top ... I do believe it is suppose to be first in/ first out!! Today the Broccoli Cheddar was so runny and also tasteless---That was a HUGE disappointment. Our server was just O.K. pleasant but never got a refill on my water or ice tea. Now the main reason for the 1 star rating.... as we were paying the girl asked how was everything.... I said... well you know what not so good, as it turned out there was a Manager standing close and asked me what was wrong... I told him everything and mentioned the new stuff just being put on top and how bad the peas tasted.... This is THE place to go to for simple comfort food, though I'd only recommend coming on weekends when the buffet is served (and it's WAY better than the Amish Door. Yeah, I said it!) I don't usually frequent buffets, but this one is always clean, fresh, and usually well-stocked. Highlights include fresh breads with a whipped honey butter spread, salad bar with tons of fixings, sweet potatoes with a mountain of marshmallows, juicy pot roast, and delicious tea served in a mason jar. Skip the instant mashed potatoes, though :[ There's also a pond right outside where you can feed the ducks or sit on the swings, a pantry, gift shop, toy store, and archery range. Is the food good? Very much 'Yes'. Is the food Amish or Mennonite food? No, but given the area, dress code, and decor, you might think so. Took my wife there because she loves Amish cooking. First time eating here with hopes of a hometown meal. To say the least it was far from. Ordered an 18oz T-bone steak that had been over tenderized so much that it was as flat as a crepe. After driving an hour we didn't want to fuss, rather suffered through. The steak was very dry with absolutely no juice; ordered as medium. It tasted as it was precooked and microwaved. When the waitress asked how our meal was we stated it was awful and we had to stop eating halfway this was because meat actually tasted bad/ old. Her response was, "did it taste old" this was before we even stated it tasted old or precooked, "you already ate some so we won't comp it" .... when we asked how the steak was prepared as it tasted precooked she stated, "I don't know what goes on in that kitchen". I should have left when the bread and our table were swarmed by fruit flies. Say the least we will never go back. read more

Entered to what felt like a gym with hockey bags and kids. Walked down hall to door to the restrauant. Kids running around or doing homework. Ordered spinach pizza. We were in the area and over the years I had heard of this place. So we decided to stop there for a late lunch. We were greeted promptly by a friendly waiter and seated. The decor is very nice and seems well maintained. These are the ONLY complimentary things I can say about this place! Do yourself a favor and avoid! I looked at the menu before we went and was excited about the food, but the lunch menu had little resemblance to the online dinner menu. So we settled for a simple burger and roast beef sandwich - we should have just walked out instead. The restaurant was not busy and there were plenty of wait-staff around but somehow this simple meal took well over 20 minutes to come out. My wife's hamburger was dry and burnt. My mashed potatoes tasted fresh from a from a box and it was tasteless. The roast beef was overcooked/tasteless but it was hard to tell at first how little meat there was since the whole plate was drowning in a flavorless brown sauce. And in spite of the wait, the only thing hot was the onion rings (which also tasted like it fresh from the freezer). At night we stopped at another restaurant and we were reminded what a good experience is like. Fresh, tasty, hot, prompt service and food even when crowded. The Barn lacks all of that! My family and I found this place while just driving today. I was very impressed by the kids menu and choices. My daughter ordered a cheeseburger and fries and she was full by the end of the burger. My son ordered a hotdog with a side of mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was big enough for an entree on it own and he said it was really good. My husband got the unlimited salad bar that came with the soup and bread station too. He said the broccoli cheese soup was amazing. The salad bar had lots of options and all the items looked and tasted good. I had the hot roast beef sandwich and mashed potatoes with gravy and a salad from the salad bar. I can only review the soup and salad bar. The rest of the menu may be great, but I wouldn't know. Coming into the restaurant which has a great atmosphere younthink you are going to get some great home cooking. You would be wrong. As for the soups, the chili tasted like it was out of a can. The chicken noodle was very gamey, and the vegetable was so,so. All were luke warm. The salad bar was very blah, nothing special. The croutons were stale. The fruits were from a can also. And like another reviewer said, nothing was labeled, not even the dressings except for low-cal on one. Same for the soups. Annoying. The honey butter "spread" was the best thing on the salad bar as it saved the tast of the so- so bread. But even it wasn't real butter. There were tons of waitresses standing around but we finally had to put our plates on the table next to us in order to get rid of some items. So, all in all...salad bar worth about half the 9.50 price and service was nothing to rave about. We won't return. read more

My daughter, my boyfriend and his daughter and I went to The Barn for lunch today. The girls and I opted for the salad bar but my boyfriend, since he ate earlier, ordered a piece of pie with ice cream. The pie was served to him cold. He asked if it could be heated up and the waitress took it back saying, "I thought I heated it up." Now I have been a server before and you should never argue with a customer, just make them happy. The pie was given to him cold again but this time the ice cream was melted because she kept the ice cream on the plate when she warmed up the pie in the microwave the second time. My boyfriend went to the manager and complained. I will say that the manager apologized, heated up the pie himself and gave it to my boyfriend for free. The waitress also half-heartedly apologized and never took any of our dirty dishes off the table. Her service was very poor. She did not have to do anything except serve of drinks, serve a piece of pie and clear dishes...and she couldn't even to do that. I will not go back. read more

I have given The Barn one star for atmosphere but that is about as far as it goes. We have eaten here many times but have noticed the quality of the food steadily declining and the prices rising. This visit found the food bland and over priced. I wanted a potato crusted trout lunch that came with two sides for $10.95. I asked if I could substitute one side for the salad bar. I was told I could substitute BOTH sides and get the salad bar for an additional $4.95!! So in essence I would pay $10.95 for a piece of fish and an additional $4.95 for a salad. Somehow this just seems outrageous! I settled for a $5.95 creamed chicken on biscuits lunch and added a salad bar. Final cost? $10.90 for the meal. The creamed chicken was bland, nearly devoid of chicken, and was basically biscuits and cream sauce. What a disappointment. I guess I have learned my lesson. I won't be back. read more

Went here on the recommendation of some friends and family. They said it's been a long time since they have eaten there but salad bar was always great. Upon entering I was greeted warmly, the atmosphere quiet, and relaxing. It was set on a very scenic property. I had the unlimited soup, salad, and bread for $9.95 it was well worth it. The salad wagon very fresh with many choices, including 3 bean salad, peaches, cottage cheese, chicken salad, pudding etc. the soup was so delicious vegetable beef I had, but they also had broccoli cheese, ham and bean, chili which my uncle said was great and chicken noodle. They had several breads to choose from, I had corn bread which was good. I was happy with my overall experience. We checked out the gift shops and bought some Amish made goodies to take home. We took a stroll around the lake, and watched the fish and the ducks. This is a very family oriented place. It was a nice way to spend a sunny weekday afternoon. read more
