Staff are friendly and helpful in offering options -- for example, I needed some dairy free milk choices. The barista also offered great recommendations with the seasonal drinks. Pricing is really reasonable... which allows you to indulge in some additional baked goods or one of their fun merchandise items like homemade dog treats, t-shirts, mugs, etc. I also like that they have a small shelf of books, records, and games if you want a little BFF time - with your bestie or for just yourself! I enjoy stopping in for refreshments and a little break from shopping on Lindbergh, or getting something to go to enjoy at home. Today, I literally had to leave because when I walked in, there was no one behind the counter, I stood there for a few minutes until someone finally came out out of the back section, and then I assume, went behind the counter to tell the worker that I was waiting. When the worker came out, she had a bunch of cookies in her hands that she then had to proceed to fold and put into a bag and then she started making the coffee of two people that were sitting at the counter while I was still just standing there. She did acknowledge me, which I appreciate, but at that point, I have been standing there for at least five minutes and I still hadn't ordered my coffee. I told her that I had to leave because I had to get to work and went to Starbucks instead, which I really didn't want to do. But this has been a pattern with this place- either they're not hiring enough staff, the staff that they have is overwhelmed or something is going on. I've been coming here for almost a year- and I definitely would prefer to patronize a local Shop, but not if it's gonna take five minutes to even just get my order taken when I am literally the only person in line. Also, I wanna add, I literally used to come here three times a week. This is not a new experience, but this one has really taken it over the top. Like I said, I want to support a local coffee shop, and I want to like this place, but particularly in the morning when people are on their way to work, this type of delay is totally unacceptable. I paired it with the breakfast sandwich that has egg, cheese, aoli sauce and normally spinach but they were out. My breakfast burrito had all the that good stuff and came with a jalapeño ranch to top it off. Service was pretty quick. Our food actually came out before our coffee, but overall it's a solid choice for a quick, satisfying brunch. But why would you want to eat food from a coffee shop? I've been visiting coffee shops on the reg for the past several weeks, and I've repeatedly made the mistake of ordering breakfast sandwiches, burritos and what have you. I have no one to blame for this but myself. I knew going in that it wasn't a good idea. I just couldn't help myself. This must be how people end up on drugs. There was a race going on nearby, when I visited 23 West yesterday. I wasn't involved, though I was there in a running capacity. My running group just happened to be meeting there. We ran a few miles in the neighborhood before our visit. By the time we got there, there was quite a crowd. The contrast between the sweaty, disheveled runners and the sleek, modern decor was striking. This place has an interior like some showroom where you're pressured into taking out a high-interest loan to purchase jewelry of questionable provenance. Are they in cahoots with the bank next door? Both buildings, I notice, have a similar facade. 23 West is painted the same shade of gray as a post-McPlayPlace-era McDonald's, when they started trying to look like a Chipotle. Some girls on apps prefer it if you didn't take them to get coffee. It's not expensive enough. If you can get one to agree to such a date, you might consider bringing them here. It's classy. The coffee is good too. I went with the Raspberry Cheesecake Cold Brew, a seasonal item. It was magnificent. I ordered mine to-go, so I could enjoy it at the tables out front, and in case 12 showed up. They give it to you in a tall plastic cup with no lid, filled to the point where it's nearly impossible to carry without spilling, presumably so you can sample the delicious cheesecake-like froth and probably get a little bit of it in your mustache. You can't really sip it with a straw. The coffee itself is surprisingly robust, given the depth of the raspberry flavor. It's an odd idea for a drink, and not something I'd usually order, but the execution was on point. I also went with a Cherry Almond Scone. I had to eat something, for emotional reasons, and it looked interesting. I'm no expert on scones, but I enjoyed it. It may have been the most dense baked good I've ever eaten, to the point where it could probably be used as a weapon, in a pinch. I know it's supposed to be similar to a biscuit and that in England, where they're consumed on the reg, a biscuit is known as a cookie (why?). It's a lot dryer than even the biscuits at a Lee's Famous Recipe, but intentionally so, I guess because it's designed to be eaten with a beverage. A hot beverage is probably ideal, but I made it work with a cold brew. It's the kind of thing you don't realize until after the fact. Next time I'll know. If and when I do return, I'll be dressed as a magician, possibly with a young lady in tow.

(I'd mention whom we have to blame for that, but I don't think it's necessary.) What a lovely location this place is in. If you time your Sunday morning run just right, you can arrive right as people are assembled, with their luggage, at the little train station next to the parking lot. Hopefully, they're not about to hop a train somewhere for tragic reasons. I used to travel by bus on occasion, and I've heard some stories. The inside is lovely. If they're overcharging, they at least spent some of it on the decor. The lights are dimmed, like at a fine-dining establishment. If you can convince a girl on Hinge to meet you somewhere for coffee, and you don't want her to see what exactly you look like, this place would be perfect. Also, if she's willing to meet IRL, and possibly give it up, in exchange for a $9 latte, chances are you're not gonna want to see what exactly *she* looks like. I've had the breakfast burrito from most local coffee places and only really cared for the one from Upshot, which might be the best thing I ever had in a restaurant. I figured Kaldi's offering wouldn't be anything to write home about but I'd try it anyway, for the sake of citizen food journalism. If this place has the unmitigated gall to charge a Section 8 rent payment for something you can get in the freezer at QT (with a free coffee, if you use the app), people need to know. Turns out that wasn't really the case. Their breakfast burrito isn't anything you just have to have, but it isn't half bad either. The ingredients are a cut above something you might get at a fast food restaurant, and I appreciate the way that the eggs, bacon, potatoes and what have you all seemed to be cooked together rather than layered on separately like in some elaborate bean dip. The bacon is greasier than you'd expect, in a good way, some of which carries over to the eggs and potatoes. A side of sour cream or salsa, or a bottle of Cholula on the table, would have really set it off. I guess coffee is what they're known for. I've had their regular coffee once or twice and recall liking it, but I've heard some people complain that it tastes burnt. But I know some people say the same thing about the coffee at Starbucks, and I might be the only person who likes that. (And yet they somehow manage to stay in business.) Kaldi's iced vanilla latte is surprisingly complex, for what it is. It's not overly sweet, and it's much more coffee-forward than the version I had a week before at Kentzo. Sometimes these things taste more like milk than anything else, which is fine with me, because I love milk, but this is probably how they're supposed to taste. If it's true what they say, that the labor here is not completely voluntary in nature, then at least they're running a tight ship. The consequences for subpar performance must be positively brutal.
