BIG MISTAKE - The worst grooming our 15-year old westie has ever had. We gave Mr. Chu a chance. He said he knew how to groom a westie. He said he knew how to blend in a coat. Look at the pictures below. We asked for a blended coat, shorter on the back. What we got was a shaved dog. Shaved on the back and neck, with no blending whatsoever. Our dog was shaking when we picked him up. We asked Mr. Chu to fix the haircut, but he just trimmed it more and made it worse. He had no idea how to blend in a coat. If I could give zero stars, I would. Posting in the hopes that I can prevent someone else from ending up with such an abomination. We will have to take our westie to another groomer to have Mr. Chu's grooming fixed, if it's even possible. So sorry to our westie for putting him through this. This groomer should be shut down. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG HERE!!! My boyfriend had the day off and decided to bring our 95lb golden retriever to The Bathing Dog to get groomed. Huge mistake. I came home that night to my beautiful golden completely shaved other than his head and tail. I was horrified. I think the before and after picture that I posted really says it all. When I called the next day to, hmmm - express my feelings - no one spoke English. It is a complete nightmare - I think my dog is even embarrassed. My Brother in Law suggested me to take my puppy for his 2nd grooming experience at The Bathing Dog. Even though it's $10 more than what I paid from another location in Millbrae, I was hoping to try another place to see if they can trim and cut my pup's toy poodle's fur elsewhere too. To my surprised, Mr. Chiu did a good job. He said my pup had a lot of knot/matte hair and he had to comb it out before using the scissor to cut his fur. (he said he doesn't use the razor on this breed). In the end, Latte has a good /clean haircut. And he's sooo cute and I can see his eyes now. Great parking area since it's so close to the resident area that I don't have to worry about feeding the meter. Overall, I am very satisfied with Mr. Chiu's work and patience since my puppy is a bit jumpy when he sees a pair of scissor in front of him. So let me start by saying this is my first review on Yelp and I'm pretty stoked about this place, which is why I decided to write the review! I moved to SF in Jan with my precious Yorkie pup and I was really concerned about getting her groomed... not so much about whether or not the groomer was going to do the job well, but because they are all so damn expensive compared to what I'm used to back home, I didn't want to spend $60 on a bad bath and cut for princess. She always gets the supreme couture cut, and I wanted to keep it that way. So I've spent the last 4 months Yelping different groomers in the area, getting price quotes and availability and all that, and it was looking like I was going to spend $60-$70 on a cut for Lucy,,, which was upsetting, but bearable. I mostly didn't like the idea of leaving her at a groomers' for the day and picking her up to see I wasn't satisfied... So when I finally got tired of the knots and filth of her ungroomed coat, I Yelped one last time on Monday and found this place. So I called Mr. Chu on Tues and asked if I could bring Lucy in Thurs for a cut. He said I was to bring her Weds afternoon. Ok, I can do that. So I brought her in Weds around 4:30 and explained that I wanted a Schnauzer cut. I love getting her cut like that so you can see the many colors in her fur, and its so cute to cut her with a skirt! I asked for the Yorkie face cut, but he apparently didn't understand. Why 5 stars? Well, he was really excited and friendly, which I always like. He had another dog he was grooming and I watched his interaction with the puppy and it was precious. He told me to come back in a couple hours and I just asked to hang out in the waiting room (I had my laptop and wanted to get work done, it worked out perfectly). So around 6:15 his next client shows up and he calls me in and Lucy is finished! She looks sooooooo cute! I've been getting her groomed regularly since she was 7 weeks (she's 2yrs now) and she has never looked so precious in her life! Obviously the language issue isnt actually an issue, and aside from that, $40! Yes, princess looks stunning for a whole $40. I am thrilled and forever a customer of The Bathing Dog. I couldn't be happier, and neither could Lucy. I swear she was strutting like the hot shit she knows she is after leaving that place! She is thrilled and everyone who's seen her since the cut agrees that she is the cutest dog in the whole city. The Bathing Dog was a fantastic find, and saved me a lot of money on a whim of needing a classy puppy. Amazing experience! First off, I called day of and asked if he had any availability and he said to bring him in! All other places either did not answer the phone or said their next available day was in 2ish weeks. When I got there, I was greeted by a kind older Asian man with such a nice genuine smile on his face. We had a small conversation about my pup. I hadn't gotten my toy poodle (Tayto) groomed for months and his hair was a mangled mess with so many matted knots. I hadn't found the right place since moving back from Atlanta. Atlanta was so much cheaper! And I knew whoever was going to cut his hair was in for a frustrating two hours. We acknowledged Tayto would pretty much be shaved to the skin because of the matted hair. I was kind of scared because the last person to do that also did a bad job on the overall cut. Mr. Chiu did so well! Tayto still has the essence of Tayto. His face (which requires the most attention) was done perfectly. Everything else was short (understandably) because of his matted hair. We had a follow up conversation. He was honest and told me he did nip him a few times trying to shave him so close to the skin. BUT I fully own up to that being MY FAULT. He told me it's dangerous to keep your dogs hair so long that it gets matted. He was fully sympathetic for Tayto and told me with matted fur it's very easy to cut the dog too. As long as you take care of your dog's fur they'll be fine. I got lazy about finding a new place after moving back. Then, it got to a point I couldn't try to comb it out and I had to just get it all chopped off. Tayto is 100% fine and I'm going to be better about brushing him out now. I'm ecstatic about finding a regular groomer. Such a positive experience. I managed to give him a tip although he pushed to not accept it. He did too well and deserved it. read more

My Pomeranian mix doesn't like strangers very much. He was so scared when I dropped him off, so I was worried that his fidgeting would make it difficult for Mr. Chu to cut his hair straight. 3 hours later, Mr. Chu's son called me to pick up my chubby pup, and he looks AMAZING! He's clean, his nails are trimmed, his tear stains are all removed, and he's a adorable. (see picture) My Cantonese isn't the best, so I only spoke English to Mr. Chu. I brought a picture of what I wanted, and Mr. Chu got it as close as possible with a few minor changes to better suit my dog's shape and features. I guess a picture really is worth a thousand words. The only things that I have to gripe about is the small rusty cage my pup had to sit in while he waited for his haircut. I don't think this was for very long though. We took our part-time Pomeranian to be groomed here and the kind gentleman who performs the service did a great job. I think they can probably only accommodate small dogs, and I have no idea what the hours are or the usual rates for services because we don't speak the same language....lots of gesturing is needed to communicate. I know some people didn't like this place so I was a little skeptical after reading the reviews. But after talking to Mr. Chu over the phone and finally meeting him in person, I really like him. My friend helped me drop my 6Lb Maltese off. Mr. Chu gave him a quote and when I picked up my dog, I paid what he had quoted. My dog looked really fluffy, neat and cute. For those who are not use to the Asian culture, you may not understand this. For an Asian to comment on something, especially something negative, it means they care. The moment I walked in to pick up my dog, Mr. Chu immediately said that I didn't know how to groom my dog because my dog could've been even more beautiful. I told him I agree. He complaint that my dog had a lot of ear wax and mild ear infection because I didn't clean it. No groomer have ever said that to me and I knew Maltese can easily get ear infection. Therefore I knew Mr. Chu took the time to clean her ears. I didn't tell him that my dog is already 14 yrs ago but he figured she had to be 10+ so he was really gentle with her. As for the facility, it's not like any fancy grooming store you would expect. It almost look like a Chinese bathhouse. Meaning, the moment you walk in, it's just an open area, then there's a shower stall like area inside the store. It did look kind of ... empty. But that's ok, as long as he's good with my dog and he does a good job, that's all that matters to me. When I picked up my dog, she was shivering at all. In fact, she was hanging out with Mr. Chu prior to my arrival. I don't know what Mr. Chu sounds like in English but when speaking Chinese with him, he is definitely a very wonderful man. Came here for the first time today after reading all the great yelp reviews. The owner, Mr. Chiu called me around 1:30 and told me I can come in earlier instead of waiting for my appointment time; which was 2:30. I happily agreed and thank him for letting me know. I got there and it was totally empty. I like the fact that Mr. Chiu makes appointment one dog at a time with gaps in between. That way, all his attention is on one dog only. We chatted and I have to say, he's a really nice fellow! He took a look at my dog and he agreed with me that it's going to be a lot of work since my dog's fur was all patched up. He told me to come back in 2 hours and when I came back, he was not done. He needed an additional 10 mins. I didn't mind at all since he was taking time to make sure my dog looks good. I wish I could give him 5 stars but he was kinda ruff with my dog's ear to the point where my dog was squealing. The price was $50 instead of $45 since my dog's fur was a lot of work. I gave him $60 but he gave me back $5 for change... too bad I didnt check the change. I ended up giving him an additional $8 for tips. I guess he took the $5 from me without letting me know. But either way, I guess I'm fine with it since he did a really nice job with my dog :) read more

I chose to come here today to get my yorkie groomed because this place is really close to home. I gave Mr.Chiu ( I think thats his name) a call and asked him if I was able to take my dog in the same day. Luckily I was able to, but he told me I had to come quick because he's closing the shop early today.Yay I was soo happy because I thought it would be impossible to find someone to groom on the same day. So we rushed over here to get my dog groomed. When I first walked in, I have to admit I didnt really like the interior of the shop and was kinda worried when I left my dog alone. However, I took the chance anyway. One hour and a half later my baby was all finished! Looking cute as always :) and smelling nice! Before the groom, my dog stunk really bad, I think it was his ears that made him stinky. When I picked up my dog, Mr. C told me that his ears are extremelyyyyyy dirty so he gave me some tips on how to clean them. I am so glad he cleaned them for me otherwise I would have to suffer with my dog's stinky ears. I plan on coming back in the future, and hopefully this time I will definitely call in advance! read more

I finally found out the name of the owner, Chu and his son (who spoke English) both VERY NICE and VERY HELPFUL and still reasonably priced at $45 for a puppy cut. I just picked up my Shih Tzu today and felt very compelled to update my review on this place...just as my rating shows...again 5 STARS...I was VERY happy with my dog's grooming. So now, we've been going to him for a year and consistently Chu has given our Chelsea a GREAT cut. Like I said before, I've been to so many groomers, here and there and over way over there...Chu knows how to cut my dog's hair. It also helped a lot that I brought in a picture to show him exactly what I wanted my dog's hair to look like and he copied it to the "T!" Disappointed to read Tu L review about him not being very consistent but as far as our experience, we are always happy with the outcome. Sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you. I feel like if I don't speak up from my personal experience, it's only going to harm others. The price was $50 flat for my long-hair chihuahua. The old man is Chinese so I spoke to him precisely in chinese, how i would like my dog to be groomed. When he called me within 3 hours since I left my dog there, I came back.. noticing that MY DOG'S ENTIRE BACK WAS SHAVED OFF. LIKE WTF ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????? He shaved the entire back.. but left the head unshaved (thank god)... but still. I was completely mortified.. This man TALKS SO MUCH bullshit about how he can do a good job and that "my dog deserves to be beautiful" and that he'll take good care of everything.. ... & worst thing is.. that wasn't even the worst part!!!! He gave me a pathetic excuse that my dog moved her head outta nowhere and he ZIPPED off part of HER EAR!!!! wtf. WTF. I was extremely upset and angry with this pet groomer when I took my dog to him a few months ago. Seeing the good reviews about this place, I thought I should give it a try since it was closer to me than other groomers. I told the groomer how I wanted my dog's haircut to be, specifically saying not to cut his tail and to leave one inch of his hair throughout. I even made sure to repeat it before I left to make sure he understood; however, when I returned to pick him up, I was horrified to see that the haircut turned out to be anything but what I specified. The hair around my dog's neck was kept long, while the hair on the rest of his body from that point on was shaved off. His beautiful tail was cut and it now looks extremely choppy. When I inquired about it, the groomer stated that pomeranians are supposed to look like that. This is odd because all of the other groomers I've brought my dog to never cut his hair like the way this groomer did. The whole haircut just looks terrible aesthetically, and you can even describe it as gross when you look at his behind. He didn't even bother to listen to what I had to say--he kept rambling on about his "21 years of experience" and blamed it on how tangled my dog's hair was instead. The groomer did not seem to genuinely like or care about dogs either. He wasn't as gentle as some other groomers that I've been to. He was a bit rough and dragged my dog to the back room as I was walking out. I should have taken that as a sign and left with my dog at that moment :( I do not recommend this groomer, but if you would like your dog to be shaved down, then this may be the place. read more

I like to keep my dog's hair really short so that it's easier to take care of... so i usually take him in twice a month. This is actually my very very first review on yelp after using it for so many years LOL. Well,, long story short, I live in San Jose, and this is by far the only place i am satisfied with for grooming my toy poodle. Mr. Chu did a really good job on my baby girl, and she looks super cute everytime when i sent her there. I know it's a long drive all the way to the city for grooming, and trust me, I tried many different places locally here in San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas, even Fremont. They often cut her hair too short or uneven, and no one was able to give her that perfect teddy bear look like Mr. Chu did. I am not saying The Bathing Dog is the best place for grooming service, but, so far, it is the BEST thru out my experiences. Beside the long drive,, Mr. Chu seems to travel to Hong Kong pretty often :( Therefore, I havent been able to schedule appointment for awhile. This is place iS horrible. YES it was easy to schedule an appointment but NO I would NEVER recommend anyone to take your dogs to this establishment if you care about your pups. My room mate and I took our three dogs there today: one black pom, one siberean husky, and one pom/pek mix around 11:30. About 7 hours later, I sent my best friend to swoop them for me only to discover that they had SHAVED my husky AND my pom in addition to the pom/pek mix's stomach in a strange, uneven manner.
