We all tried things we would not usually order(such as cabbage--and the daily app special which was a mushroom cap topped with Swiss cheese and crab meat) and it was all great! This is the restaurant to visit after you have hiked all day in Shenandoah or White Oak Canyon, or elsewhere nearby. This is exactly what my friends and I did, prior to ferociously checking Yelp for a perfect dinner spot that would cure our exercise-induced hunger. Little did we know, our needs were about to be met ten-times over. The portions here are HUGE and the food is very rich. Almost every patron had a box of leftovers to take home with them, as did our group. The decor is absolutely adorable! This is a pretty authentic Bavarian restaurant, with the German word for "kitchen" above the kitchen door, along with typical Bavarian outfits for the waiters and waitresses. I was pleasantly surprised with the drink selection, as it was vast and there was also a beer flight with five "das boots" for $10. I opted for the Hefe 1/2 liter for $7. The full liter was $10, but I just couldn't commit to all that! Sorry, college-me! So our table was instructed to order four "veggie" sides, which came along with the meal. We ordered green beans, mashed potatoes (that came with bacon), creamed corn (very sweet), and squash (probably my favorite; tasted somewhat like ratatouille). One of the people in our group is a vegetarian, so she had no choice but to order the one entree on the menu that was vegetarian - portobello mushroom. It was fried and covered in Gouda cheese! It was the least expensive out of all our options - around $20. I ordered one of the specials, the halibut. It was really tasty, but completely covered in a cream sauce and atop "veggie spaghetti" which was delicious with the pickled cabbage on the side. I could not finish half of the meal! In all fairness, we were presented with a nice bread basket at the beginning of the meal, which we started to devour... but I usually am able to finish my fish, especially after a long hike! The cost was higher than I'd prefer, which in all fairness, I didn't ask about as it was not on the menu, just told to me. For about $50 with tip for technically two meals (since I had leftovers), I'd say this wasn't a bad deal, but it was definitely more of a $$$ than $$ - for our group at least :) read more

She ran by as she said is everything ok, so we couldn't answer in any case. We had to find someone to try and order another drink, and she just seemed as if she couldn't wait to be off. If you want light and healthy food, this may not be the best choice; if you want to stuff yourself with awesome German food and oversize glasses of Weihenstephaner on tap, this is the place to go! I ate here with some colleagues, and I only wish I had had the time to relax and drink a couple more beers rather than having to cut it off after one to drive home. Pretty much everything that we tried was delicious. The sausage platter was as good as you could hope for, with three huge links of different varieties. The Schweine Kotelett (pork chops) were larger than I would have thought possible to consume, but since everyone polished them off, I assume they were as tasty as they were huge. The Wiener Schnitzel was crispy and perfectly golden brown. I liked that they served the sides all family style (this may just be for large groups though). Everyone's meals were large enough that they couldn't have eaten a lot of sides, but it was nice to be able to try them all, particularly the Spätzle, which was as good as any I've ever had. The only thing we didn't try were any desserts, but given the portion sizes I don't know how anyone could. Next time I'm in the area I'll stop by again, and maybe this time I'll leave room for that too... read more

FOOD, glorious food! The Bavarian Chef is amazing. Even if you think you don't like German food, you'll like Bavarian Chef. They have something for everyone on their menu. You WILL get delicious food. You WILL leave stuffed. You WILL leave with a doggy bag. You will pay a fair price. You will have excellent service. If they have it, you have to get the roasted red pepper soup with lump crab meat. SO delicious, and almost a meal in itself as it is very filling. You also MUST get the Bavarian nut ball dessert. My favorite meal, also a special, is the Alpine Schnitzel. Incredible! Great beer menu, too. The Bavarian Chef is in the middle of nowhere, but it is also a destination restaurant. I've brought friends from out of town/state to "The Chef" many times. If you're ever in the Charlottesville area, do yourself a favor and go to The Chef. You won't be disappointed. read more

German is the hubby's favorite food...we were both stationed in Germany so they bring back good memories for us. We hadn't tried The Bavarian Chef yet so we made a reservation for this evening. I was most pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and the pleasantness of the staff. Many German restaurants have a rather surly wait staff and I'll be damned if its not part of the charm. I thought the decor was nice and the ambience the best for German restaurants I've tried. Hubby has a favorite, and nothing so far has lived up to Das Waldcafe in Newport News Va. Tonight was no exception. One time he was eating at Das Waldcafe alone and the old German waitress came up and said "That's just so sad." He said, defensively, "I have a girlfriend but she couldn't make it!" Haha. That's the attitude we're used to! So, back to the food. I ordered the pretzel appetizer because I'm always in search of the fest pretzel. This was the first that didn't disappoint. It was HUGE and came with both cheese sauce and mustard. Not sure it was worth $9.00 but I loved it anyway. Didn't eat it all because I had to save room for dinner. I was super impressed that they had a vegetarian entree on the menu! That's a first. Unfortunately, it wasn't so impressive tasting but I'm still happy for the effort. It was portabella schnitzel over spaetzle with a Gouda cheese melted on top of tomatoes. I think I would have really enjoyed it if it had a mushroom sauce on top instead of the cheese. Please change it, please! I was so excited to have an entree in my genre. I noticed someone else said it wasn't so good with the cheese either. But a mushroom sauce? Could have been epic. Hubby ordered the cordon bleu and he ate about half and brought the rest home. He said it was good but not exceptional. The spaetzle were much drier and chewier than Das Waldcafe. We loved the family style sides. The spaetzle were about a 3, potatoes a 4, beans a 4, and he liked the carrots but I didn't. My meal was a 2.5 but the pretzel was a 5 for me. Hubby's food was a 3.5. He had the apple strudel and I had the carrot cake. Both ok but not $9 good. With one drink, one appetizer, two entrees and two desserts before tip we were at $89. Seems pretty pricey to me. Blast from the past, super oldschool in decor and plating. Portions are HUGE. Everything is delicious. Pricing is a little bit high for being in the middle of no where, but based on the portion sized, I understand. We got the weiner schnitzel and the special of the day.. Schweinhaxen (which is really the only reason why I went here). It totally reminded me of the time we had the porknuckle in Munich for Oktoberfest. Absolutely divine. I took off a star because of 1) the seating was heinous. The tables are very low and cramp, and wires are everywhere with random attached mini lamps (probably a renovation is required). 2) I was NOT attended by the hostess. She greeted my husband, and other guess prior to me, even though I was standing right infront of her - she even took an order on the phone before greeting me. It's been a long time since I've been to a restaurant where every single thing was really good. Service was slow because they were understaffed, but WELL worth the wait. Sides were sauerkraut, red cabbage, creamed corn, and german potato salad. All excellent. Appetizer of german soft pretzel has 2 divine dips included; both entrees were scrumptious. I can't remember the names of the entrees, but mine was pork loin breaded in almonds with a strawberry gin sauce, hubby's was chicken with stuffing and a nice sauce. Definitely will be back. P.S. When a waitress (looked filthy dirty) finally came out to check on other customers, no acknowledgment. Had to have the other customer walk in to ask for service. We had a great experience today at the Bavarian Chef to celebrate my grandmother's birthday. We had people aged 1-81 in our large group and our wonderful server took great care of each of them. If you're able to make the drive out to Madison, the Bavarian Chef is well worth it! Decor: The restaurant is decorated like an old German farmhouse. It looks a little dated, but it seems to be on purpose. The one year old in our party enjoyed the faux stained glass windows. Food: The food is excellent. Between all of us in our group, we ordered half the menu and no one had a single complaint. I had the special of the day, chicken schnitzel. It was covered in Swiss cheese and apples and served with a lemon curry sauce. The apples were slightly weird, but I ate the whole thing. And the portions are huge, so that says a lot. A couple in our party opted to split a meal, and they did that very well, dividing their soup and trout dish into two evenly split (but still very large) portions. The sides here are also extremely good. The red cabbage, creamed corn, and mashed potatoes were the favorites in our group. The potatoes were creamy and very well seasoned. The food is definitely rated 5 stars! Service: The service we received was top notch! When they heard we were celebrating an 80th birthday, they even decorated our table with a commemorative plate. Our group can definitely be picky and difficult for a server to deal with, but ours handled is with no problems. She seemed very experienced, and we wanted for nothing. My wife and I happened to stumble upon this delightful restaurant on our way back from DC. And I am glad we turned around to give this gem a chance. First this restaurant isn't for people on a budget seeing as we spent $95.00 for two plates but that's including a 20% tip. The hostess wore garments befitting the region, being served by a hostess wearing traditional German clothing add to the depth of enjoyment that was only surpassed by the exquisite presentation and flavor intensified duck. Secondly the menu's options are in German with explanations in English, and a bar and local and domestic beers to be enjoyed out of a glass boot. Side items for example, sweet pickled red cabbage, snatzle, whole cooked baby carrots and zucchini's etc. are infinite, but honestly who would have room left after eating such a wonderful meal. Also with desert options but I regretfully had zero room to enjoy. I will gladly drive 4 hours to indulge my palate with the authentic old country meals. This was my wife's first time eating German food and I'm pleased that this extraordinary place was her introduction to the world of German cuisine beyond the bratwurst. read more

We went to this restaurant for Thanksgiving. The place was packed. To cram as many people as possible, tables were so close to each other that you could barely move your chair. No windows open, no ventilation. Instead of using the outdoor patio (it was a beautiful warm day) to spread people out, they closed it. We have two small unvaccinated children and asked whether we could bring our food outside not to expose them to that crammed, unventilated room and they said no. We ended up taking the food to our hotel room. The schnitzel were dry and flavorless . The veggies tasted like canned ones and the spaetzly were basically steamed. The place is not cheap, so we're not expecting such a bad experience. We will definitely not recommend this restaurant. read more

We stopped in for C'ville area restaurant week and were able to try some GREAT food at a very fair price and WOW, it knocked out socks off! The same family that opened this very popular (and somewhat famous) German restaurant in 1974 still owns and operates it. All of the dishes they prepared for our group were done very nicely and were also very hearty, so bring your appetite! Bar area was beautiful with exposed plank walls and ceiling, like you're in an old lodge or cabin. The servers all wear the traditional Dirndl, which added to the ambience. We don't drink beer, but they appeared to have a very nice selection on tap for beer drinkers. Desserts are all made there and, once again were incredible! They were extremely busy on the Saturday night that we went. I've heard it's like that all the time, but they did a FANTASTIC job with the wait. We'd recommend reservations!!! We had them, but those we saw come in without them were still taken care of with minimal wait. Service we received from our server was awesome! He was very friendly and he explained the menu, as much of it is written in German (the names of the dishes that is). He was prompt and attentive the entire visit. Only issues we found - There really isn't enough parking for how crowded they get. The building is beautiful, but some of it is rather dated, like the peeling wall paper. Love all the other "older" decorations, but the wall paper should be repaired and the restroom are horribly dirty and the women's restroom in serious need of repair!!!
