I've been going to The Bay for years, and it's honestly disappointing to see what it's become after the latest remodel. This is the third remodel I've seen, and somehow each one strips away more of what made this place special. The old Bay had character. It felt like a true Bozeman local spot. Now it just feels generic and corporate. The atmosphere is completely gone. It honestly reminds me of an Applebee's, and that's not a compliment. At least Applebee's has more character. The food doesn't make up for it either. Nothing stands out anymore. It's just average across the board, especially considering what it used to be. The menu is practically the same, which makes the whole remodel feel even more pointless. The expanded casino is probably the only thing that's going to keep this place alive at this point. And even with that, the menu is just the same old same old, nothing new, nothing worth going out of your way for. It feels like they traded personality for a bland, cookie-cutter vibe, and that's a tough pill to swallow for a place that used to have so much charm. Would I go back? Probably not. There are too many better, more authentic options in Bozeman now. read more

This used to be our go-to place for upgraded sit-down meals out, and for girls' nights out with my various friend and colleague groups. Something was lost after the last '26 remodel, however. The remodel itself is ok - more generic modern but with a few unique pieces, the floor is a single level now, and it feels a little less spacious than before, but overall pretty ok. It was the fact that we did not get great service including from the front of house staff, or through our waitress, and it was suggested we find somewhere else to eat. I have a gluten intolerance where consuming gluten gives me a rash, a horrible headache, and brain fog if I eat gluten-containing items. I'm actually ok with some cross-contamination, so can eat out as long as I opt for gluten-free options. There are a couple of places I avoid going back to after getting glutened and symptomatic even ordering their specific GF options and noting it when placing my order, but I am fine finding GF options pretty much anywhere I go and rarely get "glutened" any longer. The Bay was always a safe space and therefore become a favorite go-to, and a place I'd take our out-of-town work guests to often as it's close to our work and they always had great options. We went about a month ago for the first time since the latest remodel since it'd fallen off our radar for a time with the closure, and upon getting seated, I asked the front of house gal if there is a separate allergen menu because at quick glance, I didn't see anything marked GF. She told me they do not offer allergen-free options but can be allergen friendly, and to check the menu which will have notations of things like GF/ DF. Ok, fair enough - I must have missed the notations at quick glance, and I thanked her. I have been gluten-free for medical reasons for well over a decade and I know for liability reasons, they cannot state they offer 100% GF or V or whatever because of cross contamination issues, so I figured I could get it sorted easy enough after looking more closely at the menu. Disappointingly, not a single thing on the menu was marked like it used to be. I went back to her and pointed this out, and asked again if there was a different menu. She seemed surprised and annoyed I went back to her, and I reminded her that she told me it would be more clear on the menu, yet nothing was marked at all. She said I'd need to talk to our waitress about it and she didn't know anything about it. I said I would and went back to our table. Confrontation makes me uncomfortable and I was genuinely nice and patient while asking her questions, so I don't know why she seemed so annoyed with my questions. We were there at an off-time and there was no one else waiting to be seated. I asked our waitress and she told me that they couldn't state they had allergen-free items, but only allergen friendly. Again, I get that, and told her that was fine, but that absolutely nothing was marked so I didn't even have a starting point of what I could order. I was very kind and patient about it, but she still seemed very thrown off and slightly annoyed. She asked if it was an allergy or a sensitivity. I told her a sensitivity. She then said most of the salads would probably be safe, and I could request a GF bun for the hamburgers, but that many of the meats are made with or marinated in a Worcestershire sauce that has gluten, but since it was just a sensitivity, I'd probably be ok with some gluten. I told her I was ok with minute levels through cross contamination, but that I couldn't have items with gluten-containing options without having a reaction. She told me that maybe it wasn't the place for me to eat since pretty much everything will have some gluten in either the sauces or spices. Again, I totally get liability with stating things are allergen-free; I get cross-contamination issues, but the fact that they no longer have any items they call allergen-friendly with their typical asterisk'ed warning of cross contamination boggles my mind. Before the remodel and latest menu change, I never once had an issue with The Bay and never got my "glutened rash" when ordering items marked GF and doing their recommended substitutions. I'm very disappointed in the latest change and that I was not only not given any options, but was turned away. I mean, I guess better that than getting an uncomfortably itchy rash and brain fog, but I'm very sad with the change and that I cannot eat at one of my favorite places any longer, and that they seemed a little clueless about what a food sensitivity was. When I reviewed this restaurant back in 2015 it was in fact good. Since then we have had bad experiences with the food, with the staff, and simply do not go there anymore. The restaurant is closed as the mall is making changes but it remains to be seen if the owner will work to go back to basics and bring this place back. In the last few years the menu has been reduced, standard fare replaced with cheap cisco ingredients, and the staff was not customer oriented. The days of long lines and business lunches here are long gone by which is really sad because this place was one of the best in Bozeman. read more

We finally went to try the reopened restaurant and found very comfy seats, well-lit and nicely decorated surroundings, and a prompt, friendly greeting. The more open floor plan made for a higher noise level than before, even though it was a late lunch time and not overly crowded. Our food was delivered quickly and exactly as ordered. The three dishes we tried were the Wild Game Bolognese, Fish & Chips, and a Tofu Banh Mi with sweet potato fries. The portion sizes were large, everything was hot and fresh, and most importantly tasted delicious. Service was excellently timed, including a dessert menu before we asked - rare for lunch, especially! The tiramisu was surprising in that rather than a light, fluffy filling it was more like cheesecake, with crispy ladyfingers, but absolutely yummy. The Crème Brûlée was very rich and presented nicely. Altogether we enjoyed the meal very much, and while it's a different feel than The Bay of old, we will definitely be back. read more

Bummed! Was looking forward to the remodel and reopening. Went to dinner at 6:45. I felt like I was in a high school LOUD cafeteria environment. The hardwood floors and decor I am sure contributes to that loud environment. Food was so, so. Nothing to write home about but certainly expensive. We had drinks and dinner after seeing a movie. The place was busy, but we chose to sit inside since there was no wait. Seating options include traditional height tables, tall tables, booth seating, bar seating and outside patio seating. The area was small but super cute! We got fried pickle spears, which were fantastic! Hand breaded and slightly spicy. The calamari starter was also lightly breaded in house and were a favorite. Easy to tell that all the accompanying sauces were made in house as well and we're delicious. my daughter got the Flank Steak BLT, loved it! She is a picky eater. The Cesar Salad was traditional but fresh and tasty. I loved the baked french onion soup! My husband ordered the Honey Garlic Chicken Sandwich and really enjoyed it. We all particularly enjoyed the Sweet Potato wedge fries. The menu also includes plenty of higher end dishes which I plan to try. This restaurant would make a great date night spot. read more

our server was great and did the best to correct a number of things that were just wrong. Rare steak was well done. corrected but the rare steak finally came when everyone in our large group was done. I tried the french onion soup as my entree (not the appetizer) as it was rated high online. it was basically a bowl of bread and cheese (served with more bread) with very little onion that was so salty I couldn't eat it. everything took a really long time which suspiciously a ploy to get us to keep ordering appetizers and bread so we had something to eat. people nice. prices high. food underwhelming. seating not great for large groups. read more

Food is always amazing. I love the Bay. However, the bartender with shoulder length brown hair was so rude. I asked for a Tom Collins with lime. Typically made with lemon, yes. I like lime better. When I ordered it she had to look it up on her phone. So I explained how I like it made to the bar tender training. She snapped at me and the poor guy she was training, " that's not a Tom Collins!" Rolled her eyes and walked away. It surprised me. I decided to take the higher road and apologize and explain I just like it better. She then told me ( very irritated) it was a gimlet. I always understood that was made with syrup and I prefer soda water. She was awful, I guess if you go there make sure you know her correct way of making the drink you prefer..... Too expensive since food left a lot to be desired. The meals my husband & I had were edible & that's it. It's not the type of restaurant you will return to once you try it. One thing I didn't understand is the extra $5 fee for using a credit card instead of cash. But no one tells you before hand & is not written on menu or anywhere. The positive stance I'll take is the ambience (particularly the bar area is quite inviting). I've only been there a couple times, but the service has been quite nice.....no complaints (except I would have never even served the crumbs we received as calamari.....and I do mean it looked like they ran out and placed the burnt crumbs on a plate ( didn't even look like calamari). What I don't appreciate is when a bartender doesn't know how to make a drink and tries to pass off something else to replace the actual drink. If you don't know how to make an old fashion, martini, manhatten or any other drink, DON'T fake it, because SOME of us actually know what the drink is supposed to taste like. This place is hit or miss & careful of ordering any drinks that take any skill or knowledge to make! read more

Went for dessert and drinks on a birthday night, the first thing to note is that this restaurant is much nicer than it presents on the outside! Not sure what they were going for with the rusty(?) looking sign outside but combined with the fact that they're attached to a shopping mall it looked like it would be a run-down cajun themed crab shack or something. The inside is really nice and has an upscale feeling, they had a great selection of craft cocktails and desserts and the wife and I ordered two crème brûlées and their "warm and cozy" cocktail as well as some sipping tequila. We've stopped by The Bay several times, over the years, when we pass through Bozeman. Yesterday, on our way home, we realized it had been awhile, so we decided to swing in for late lunch / early dinner. Turned out to be a good call. We arrived around 4pm. We were greeted & seated immediately. We were the first table to be seated in the Dining Room. Our server, Jillian, stopped in several times to check on us, as we settled in. It took us around 20 minutes to actually get to the point of placing our food order. Jillian was patient & very helpful with suggestions & recommendations. Since it was Happy Hour, we opted to get some apps & a drink. Here's the run down: I ordered a Moscow Mule & The Wife ordered a Strawberry Martini. Both drinks were very tasty & presented well. Shrimp Wontons: Crispy, nice temp on arrival, lots of cream cheese, decent amount of shrimp. Both sauces were great. Overall these were really good. Chicken Sliders: Awesome app! There's a ton of flavor packed into these little cluckers. The texture was perfect & the chicken was moist. Home Run! House Made Chips & Onion Dip: Mixture of potato & beet chips. Chips were just a smidge over cooked. Not much, but just. We all liked them & the Onion Dip was quite good. Little Guy really liked these chips. Dragon Tenders: We got 1/2 Buffalo & 1/2 Dragon. The chicken was cooked well, both sauces were great. Wife said Buffalo won, but I'm on Team Dragon. The Ranch & Blue Cheese which accompanied the tenders were both top notch. Probably the best Blue Cheese I've had, at this level of restaurant. Little Guy opted for the Cheese Pizza from the Kid's Menu. He loved it! This kid knows his Pizza, so take notice. Kid's meal comes with an Ice Cream Sundae, which he enjoyed as well. The Space: I wish I had better news here. The Dining Room is in need of an immediate update. The tables are very worn, the carpet (yes carpet), in the Dining Room is tired & homely & the driftwood on the ceiling, of the Dining Room, is just nasty looking. Wife said the Ladies restroom needed a custodial visit. The better news is this: None of these things equate to what's on the plate. However, they still should be addressed. Service: I'm just gonna say it, Jillian has been the best server we've had in Montana, in at least a year or two. She was on top of her game & we noticed. A+ If you appreciate a Veteran Server, who knows how it's done, ask to be seated in her area. I almost forgot to mention, the Manager also stopped by our table to ask how everything was. Went here to see how things were. I was excited to see they served my Favorite Rib Eye Steak. Wife ordered the chicken tacos and i ordered the rib eye. Our waitress comes back and tells me the kitchen staff said there are no more Steaks... they just freaking opened! And out of steaks!? Disappointed i ordered the western burger which was mediocre but our waitress Rachelle was so nice and bubbly it calmed me down a bit. I had chicken tacos which were chunks of dried out chicken breast, a bean concoction that was so visually unappealing that I couldn't begin to eat it and bland mexican rice. So, prepare to be ignored. I would highly recommend going to the food court, or leaving the vicinity to eat. We made the mistake of sitting on the patio. We saw our waiter once for our order. We ordered drinks and appetizers. Hard, right? We didn't get share plates. The lettuce wraps came with 3 gross pieces of lettuce, and the dragon tenders were horrible. They used to be so good. And they forgot our third appetizer. We had to track down the host for a refill. They did buy us another round, which was nice. I would prefer good service. read more

The bison burger and fries were good, and the teriyaki chicken was grilled to perfection, although the waitress needs to add more words than "perfect" to her vocabulary. The Gouda cheese on the burger was very good, and the iced tea was good. Portions were small for the price. Service was good. When I say that I want the change back because I left the tip on the table, that includes the 35 cents, not just the dollar amount. I didn't see anything posted that they'd be keeping anything under a dollar, and the prices were high enough to begin with. read more

Wow yikes. Shame on the owner/manager for not being in there helping out when they are busy and understaffed. There was diarrhea all over the ladies room, it took over a half hour to get a drink, and the drink tasted gross anyway. This place has fell so far. It used to be my go-to. But the part 3 times I've been there, the services has gone way down hill and the food and drinks have completely gone to hell. Not to mention the remodel was an interior design disaster. Don't waste your time. The Chinese food in the food court is better. I should mention that the dark haired girl was a lovely server. But she's one of the last good ones left. read more

My husband and I heard about this place and decided to come. We're new to the state and came for an early dinner & it was delicious. The waitress was very attentive and kind. We didn't have to wait for refills. I asked the waitress for hot water to warm up my baby's milk and she brought it right away. I will definitely come back. The Bay was one of our favorite places to eat. It was my fiancé and I's go to place on date night. One of the best aspects of The Bay was that they made everything to order, so they could accommodate all kinds of allergies. Then they started cutting corners. They buy their food pre-made now (beef stroganoff), they changed their fryer oil to a cheaper highly processed soybean version, and they also switched their sauces from being made in house to pre-packaged... all to save a few pennies. In the process of saving pennies, they are losing dollars. I don't know how many times we would have purchased appetizers but couldn't because of soy allergies. Not only that, but they have lost us as regular customers. In an already saturated market, why would a restaurant lower the quality of their food? On a night out, I would rather spend $60 at Fresco, Saffron Table, Ale Works, or any number of higher end restaurants in town. I hope things get turned back around. I had visited the bay frequently many years ago. Upon my return tonight, I found the service quite wonderful, but the food far below expectations. My boyfriend ordered the burger special medium rare. Unfortunately it arrived well done with a very thin bun and a mediocre BBQ sauce flavor comparable to something you may get at a fast food chain. I ordered the mahi mahi tacos. Although an interesting combination of flavors in the description on the menu, they were very bland. So bland, i wouldn't even recommend them to the severely intoxicated. Also, our appetizer, the dragon tenders were unbelievably dry, over cooked, and salty, nothing like the way I remembered them. The wait staff and bar staff were very prompt and friendly, so if you want a drink, definitely go here! as far as the whole experience, the food was certainly lacking, or maybe they were just too crowded to handle the demand. read more

I had a wonderful time at the bay bar and grille. We had a reservation for a party of 10 for my daughters birthday party. Zach helped me plan the reservation on the phone and was extremely helpful in the process, he seated us at a very nice table relatively close to the bathroom (my husband has Crohn's disease which I had mentioned to Zach over the phone). Zach also helped us plan a desert surprise for my daughter's big day. Overall great customer service, and great food. If you ever call to book a reservation and Zach is on the other line, know you are in goooooooood hands. 10/10 would dine here again! read more
