We had a great experience and meal this past Saturday at the Bayou. We were greeted and seated right away and the place had a great Saturday night vibe going on. I've been coming here off and on for 30 years, and I've never had a bad meal. Came here tonight for the Mardi Gras party. despite the full house, everything was delicious! We had the fabulous popcorn shrimp, Fried chicken, and blackened catfish. Very large portions -- come here hungry! Also the house salad with their amazing basil dressing. Ask to buy a bottle to take home! They gave us some king cake, but we were so stuffed we took it home. They have great cocktails, including the NOLA original, the Hurricane! Also a good selection of beers including some Abita beers! This is the second Creole restaurant I visit in NY, and the flavors of the food are undeniable. There's something about Creole food that makes you feel at home. I got up and went to the kitchen to ask if the kitchen was open & if they were serving food? Which they replied yes and we waited for another five minutes still no one came to serve us. At this point a couple came in and sat down as well. I decided that 15 minutes in an empty dining room was enough. So we left. I'm not sure what the problem was and the fact that no one came out to tell us the waiter staff was running late, no show or quit was the reason. Overall the food was good. The macaroni and cheese could have used a bit more flavor to it. I'm not sure if it was the cheese that was bland or lack of seasoning. I came pre Covid and had such a wonderful time I wanted to return ; food was different and fun. Tonight was lackluster it was quick to get seated slow to even get a drink the place wasn't packed yes there were some tables but it wasn't crazy. The staff wasn't rude and nice enough so I left a star on for that . The pull boys were good; oysters seamed fresh the crawfish had to be frozen and broth was lacking in flavor; the coleslaw needed mayo and more condiments. Parking is on street metered until 9 . It's been a while since I've been to the Bayou and I must say it was quite lovely to pop in there this afternoon for an early dinner as you can see we were quite hungry and we ordered quite a bit and we took home quite a bit as well- however everything was delicious. Service was terrific - the food was delicious and made to order- the drinks were good, my friend loved the gator which is the reason why we went to the restaurant. I recommend you go visit them - the ambience is low key pop in on the weekends they have live music. read more

I used to frequent this establishment back in the day. It was an absolute favorite when I lived in the Bronx and some of my best friends were nearby in Mt. Vernon. Well, the stuffed jalapeño appetizer was pretty disappointing--not poppers at all, just actual jalapeños stuffed with cheese--very odd. I got a fried catfish po boy which was fine but kind of bland, while my girlfriend doubled down on the jalapeño, getting Mac and cheese with jalapeño added. It was also ok but very greasy. Our friend got jambalaya that he had to douse in hot sauce for the desired effect. Service was--and I know this sounds like a line, but---literally someone who must have been like 12 or 13. Son of the owner? I dunno. It was weird and so painfully slow--we were here virtually 2.5 hours--but we didn't want to complain because--you know--then you're being mean to a kid! I had frogs legs that would have made Doc Hopper proud. I also had the catfish, which was excellent - blackened, spicy, and a generous helping of two fillets. I tasted the Buffalo cauliflower and it was really good, and I'm a wing guy. It is not a substitute for wings, so don't expect that. It's just a good app. The chicken fajitas had a Cajun bite and the chicken was cut into small morsels. The collard greens, beans, cole slaw, and sweet potato chips all were great. I placed an order for delivery. I was feeling for some gumbo and this place seemed to have a lot of good reviews. I had gumbo for the first time last year somewhere in Miami and it was amazing so I was craving It hard. I was a very disappointed. It was like soupy shredded meat and that's it. I taste lil tiny chunks of sausage but that's it. I didn't like that. For some reason I get the feeling that it's canned soup or something, I don't know it's something about it's taste. It just wasn't authentic gumbo ya know. I also ordered Cajun popcorn shrimp and they were not crunchy AT ALL (extremely soggy actually) nor were they Cajun or even seasoned at all. I'll give them another try in the future but I'm in no rush to do so Update: I posted that review last night after eating. Maybe an hour after, my stomach just felt messed up (and please forgive me because this is a bit of TMI) but I had explosive diarrhea ALL night. So.....I went tonight and things were different. As a result, I changed my review. Here we go: "Do you know how much wings cost these days"? -By the Manager on Duty on August 27th at 7:15pm. So, I wanted to order a split sauced wings to go. And the waitress said, "We don't do that here. You have to order separately." I asked to speak with the manager and was greeted by such a polite, mask wearing man with manners. I asked if I could order 8 Signature Voo Doo and 8 Bayou Buffalo for the 16 wings. He said, unfortunately no. You must order separately. Because of both the preparation of wings and the cost. Followed by the aforementioned quote. In the end, I wound up ordering 16 Bayou Buffalo and 16 Signature voo doo. The price was never the issue. I wanted a courtesy extended or an additional price applied since I'm a loyal customer. Instead, I received a non-budging Manager who wanted to ensure his "his chicken wings were fully covered and his staff was supported in their decision to not make an exception". The absolute worst POBOY sandwich I have ever ate. It was a philly cheesesteak, no cheese. Salty to the point of hard to eat and bitter from the salt. In all my almost 30 years of living in Mount Vernon, I have never been to this spot so tonight my friend was in the mood for some gumbo and I decided to join her. When we got to the restaurant it wasn't that crowded so the hostess told us we can sit wherever we want. we chose a table in the corner but then we were told that the band is going to set up in a few minutes so we had to pick another seat. When I heard band my ears perked up. I ordered the Key lime margarita and an order of hush puppies as an appetizer. The hush puppies were freshly made so they were scorching hot when they came to the table. We asked for some maple syrup and honey to go with them and that made them that much better. For my main I got an order of Voodoo wings with an order of mac and cheese. The wings were really well seasoned and came to the table piping hot so did the mac and cheese. In all the food was pretty good but what made the night really good was the house band. The band was really good and after the band played other musicians in the room were allowed to get up and have a shot at playing. In all the experience was really fun and i would definitely come back here. I wish I actually came here sooner than I did but now I will be going more often for sure. read more

We came in here for trivia night on Sunday (yeah Chester St gang time). I ordered up voodoo wings and a catfish poboy. My first suggestion is bring your glasses or a flashlight! The dining area is very dark. I'm not complaining, the joint has plenty of character, completed by a jumbo Gulf sign. I greatly enjoyed the ambience. The voodoo wings were crispy and yet the meat still fell off the bone. I don't know what kind of culinary magic was worked here, but the charcoal smokiness was heavenly. I took a stab at going for authentic and I ordered a catfish Poboy. I asked for bacon. The sandwich was generously portion and the fish was very well seasoned. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the sweet potato fries were!! The coleslaw was good, but I think it could have used a little more mayo. Trivia night was a lot of fun. Fried food is pretty on point. Mac n cheese was filled with clarified butter(like dripping). I was shocked the small bowl was $8. Cornbread was hefty yet fresh so another plus point. On the whole, it's mehhh for investment. I guess they fry things well which is why it's popular. Being a vegetarian is a bad idea here. For the price the portions were small. In a place catered towards southern food, why can't it have solid portions for vegetarians? I also thought the cooking was a bit slow, but since somethings were fresh I didn't mind. I would give this zero stars if I could. The food is terrible, the $14 drinks are so full of ice that you would be lucky to get 3 sips out of them, and furthermore, they are VERY POORLY MADE and even missing ingredients. Stay away from the specials... the only thing special about them is that they are more expensive than almost everything else on the menu, and they taste like crap. The wait staff are literally 11 year olds... AND THEY ALLOW THESE MINORS TO SELL AND BRING YOU ALCOHOL! LAST TIME I CHECKED, THIS IS A FELONY! Furthermore, this one kid couldn't move any slower if he tried. He is probably the owners kid. Shame on his parents for forcing a child to work in a bar til late hours on school nights... just so they could be cheap and not pay a real waiter. I believe that they are violating just about every child labor law. The BBQ sauce is nothing short of disgusting, and the rice that they served me was hard and dry... probably because they cooked it at 9 A.M. and left it sitting out all day until they finally put it into a microwave at 8 P.M. AND THE WORST PART, you walk into an empty restaurant, you're told to sit anywhere you want only for an 11 year old to come back and tell you that you have to move! These people should be ashamed of themselves, especially since dinner for two and two drink costs at least $100. At these priced, you would think that the food would at least taste good. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS, unless of course you want to overpay for a stomach ache. I've haven't had to take a shit this bad since I drank the water in Mexico! read more

Sorry to say, after roughly 30 years of coming here, including many New Years celebrations, we're considering removing it from our "special occasion" restaurant list. Granted Covid hit places hard but it's been over for what, three years now? Portions used to be generous, all entrees came with two sides and cornbread. Now you pick two sides, cornbread being one of those choices so you only get two sides. Portions have slowly gotten smaller (prices haven't). Ate there tonight and now for example, the greens come in a very small ramekin sized dish instead of a large portion on your plate. DO NOT even attempt to go downstairs to the men's room. Granted this place is supposed to be kitschy/dive bar styled but when you serve fancy Cajun meals at between $22-$30 for entrees you need to maintain a certain level of decorum in you bathrooms. Just going down the worn out steps to the bathrooms is a trip (literally. How have they not been sued?). The entire flight of steps has come loose from the wall and literally bounces up and down about an inch or so as you walk up or down. I'm talking the entire flight! Last time I saw something like this was in a funhouse. There's a bathroom upstairs hidden behind the stage but they dissuade customers from using it. I suspect it's only thete so they can say they are ADA compliant. Now for the men's room. Been getting steadily worse ever since we've been going. Between the graffiti covered Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders poster covering the hole in the wall to the literal open bucket used as a garbage pail.. Then it gets worse. The door to the single stall is attached to a floor to ceiling "beam" on the hinge side. Well, the beam has literally been ripped out of the ceiling leaving behind a ragged hole with plaster falling out of it. As such, not only does the stall door not work, the entire beam, with door attached, is ready to fall on someone. This bathroom really needs to be condemned. I've seen better ones in gross gas stations. Food, what you get, is still good, place needs some work. read more
