We love the beachcomber and recommend to anyone going to Crystal Cove beach. That will stop after today's experience. We went today and had the shrimp tacos and chicken salad both excellent . We asked our waitress for an xtra plate to split our meal . She mentioned the kitchen could do it for us and I thought that was great service ( never mentioning there was a fee for this service ) . When we received our bill the entrees went from $24 to $33 . That is almost a 50% increase . One of the most unethical experiences I have ever had at a restaurant especially one as well established and respected as the Beachcomber . I would have totally understood if we were splitting one entree between the both of us but we each ordered an entree. read more

Went there on a Monday for lunch. They said it would be a 1.5 hr wait but we did get seated after 40 mins since we dined inside. If you sit facing the outside the view is nice. Service was OK. Not really friendly nor rude just neutral. The food is not bad however it isn't worth the price in my opinion. Would revisit still just to give it another try! I visited the Beachcomber recently for my dad's birthday and it had been a few years since my family and I have been here. I think this restaurant is in such a beautiful location and the service is great, but I think the food here can be hit or miss. I also had a minor issue with my reservation. I had my reservation here booked 3-4 weeks in advance so I was expecting to be seated immediately but unfortunately despite our entire party being there on time, we waited an additional 20 minutes past our reservation time before we got seated. It could've been worse if we were hungrier and if the view wasn't so nice, but I think that's a bit much of a wait for having reservations. The appetizers we got were solid! We ordered the Ahi Nachos, Mini Brioche Lobster Rolls, Ceviche de Camaron, and Clam Chowder. The Ahi Nachos were so fresh and flavorful, and the texture of the wonton nachos were soooo perfect! The Lobster Rolls were so cute and had amazing flavor and the lobster was cooked perfectly. The Ceviche was also super fresh and limey. The Clam Chowder was a bit salty for me unfortunately. If I had to pick one appetizer though, definitely go for the nachos. As for the entrees, we got the Pan-Roasted Blue Crab Stuffed Salmon, Frutti di Mare, Miso Glazed Butterfish, and the special of the day which was the Swordfish. All portions were generous which is appreciated. I was disappointed by the Frutti di Mare as someone that loves seafood and pasta. I think the flavor was more tomatoey than it was seafoody despite being packed with seafood (and I love tomatoes too). I was most excited for this dish, but it fell kind of flat for me. I just expected a little more flavor and the texture of the sea bass wasn't my favorite since it was kind of firm. But the bread it comes with is delicious, we ended up asking for extra! The rest of the entrees I only had little tastes of so take what I say with a grain of salt. The Blue Crab Stuffed Salmon wasn't my favorite but I think that may just be personal preference. I like both blue crab and salmon but maybe not together. I feel the same towards the Swordfish which was average for me, but that's mainly because I find swordfish to run drier. BUT the star of the show here is 1000% the Miso Glazed Butterfish. This is the one dish I remembered from my last visit here and it continues to be the best entree I've gotten to try here. It's so so so good. Buttery, flaky, juicy. The crust is even better, just perfectly thin and crispy but packed with flavor. I LOVE this dish, it's a must have. Cocktails!! All solid, but beware of the big jars hahaha they're pretty strong. If that's what you're going for though, good bang for your buck. They taste good though! Love the Watermelon Mojito the most. Since it was my dad's birthday, they brought out a warm gooey brownie with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream on top. I swear these simple desserts are always the most unsuspecting but it was delicious. The brownie was PERFECTLY gooey which is just the best paired with vanilla ice cream and that's all I have to say about that :) Loved our server, she was super sweet and attentive. We enjoyed having her for the evening! The ambience is warm, visually, but also literally. I love how they have their heater set up to run up through the ground. You will feel nice and toasty even on the chilliest day on the patio. Love the lighting and the aesthetic here, it's a cute upscale beach shack. A tip if you're a first timer here, park at the Los Trancos Parking Lot ($15) and either take the $2 shuttle or take a short 5-10 min walk to the restaurant. Arrive a little early to enjoy the nice view and take some pictures! I definitely take the beach for granted despite living so close. Overall, my experience at Beachcomber was on the positive side. Wow, wow, wow! This place is stunning, right on the beach. In all our years my mother and I have always wanted to come here and we finally had the opportunity to. Definitely make reservations as I could see this place filling up quickly. Pay attention to their instructions as you do have to park in the public beach parking lot. Leave time for the shuttle and/or walking, I highly recommend walking down and riding the shuttle back up. We came for breakfast and that was definitely a winning play. Our server started us with some iced coffee (yum!) and we opted for pancakes, the coconut and lemon ricotta, and both were out of this world. Luckily my mom opted to split with me otherwise I might have just gone for the coconut pancakes ;) This would be a great spot for a special occasion or just a fun relaxing meal. I've never had a bad experience at the Beachcomber! Hadn't been in a couple years and finally had the chance to bring my wife here for her first time. Fish and chips for my daughter, Waygu burger for my wife and Lobster Roll with Cole slaw for me. Everything was of course amazing. The toast on my lobster roll was melt in my mouth perfection. First of all, EVERYONE is super kind, helpful, and friendly, especially our waiter Jesus; this is important because there can be a long wait for a table of f you don't have reservations. We sat at the bar area and had coffee, and took pictures to pass the time, and before we knew it our table was ready. Once we ordered, the food came out rather quickly, and I didn't even think to take pics I have added, however, take a look at what was left and you will get some idea of how fresh, flavorful, and well presented the meals were! We arrived early for our reservation for two and informed the receptionist that two additional people will be joining us. We waited for 30 min. Which wasn't an issue until the promonade seating opened. We are both senior with bad knees and asked if we could now be seated when we saw other guests being seated ahead of us and came after us. We were told we could not be seated until everyone arrived. We even spoke to manager Chris who refused to allow us be seated and even said that if he seated the two of us, that if the other two people came they would not be able to sit with us. The one star is for the two girls that "greeted" us at the Hostess desk Monday around lunchtime. They were terrible !!! Both had poor attitudes and not friendly at all !!! Right from the beginning when we signed in! After waiting a half hour I went back up to check in, one of them angrily said we just paged you.....the pager in my hand was doing nothing! So we got seated at a table down the beach. After we had been seated a while my wife asked if they had given me her drivers license when I turned the pager in. No they hadn't. She went back down to the hostess desk to got it. They hassled her and weren't going to give it back to her !!!! She finally got them to give it back to her. The salmon stuffed with crab was excellent I don't know what they do to get such a nice crust on the salmon but it works! Not to be outdone by the salmon the short ribs were excellent. They were flavorful and better yet, juicy! They sat on a bed of ravioli with a rich béchamel sauce, the dish was almost too rich. The weak link here is probably the drinks. I went mid-week so the service was quick and our server Nancy was so attentive. The restaurant is located steps from Crystal Cove Beach Cottages and a good place to eat after exploring the area. Start off with their beignets, they're freshly prepared. The sweet treat is crispy and melts in your mouth. Worth the hype. Since we chose the inside seating area, we were seated right away, but the wait to sit out on the beach or patio is worth the wait. I hate to even give this place a five star review because I feel like it's kind of a secret. It's like you're in Hawaii. It's a state owned beach that not nearly enough people know about. I'm currently dealing with an injured foot so we took the shuttle from across the street and had a fantastic meal. The vibe is very beachy very cool. You'll get sand in your shoes. Just walking there. The service is fantastic, a bunch of young people very happy to be working there. Usually when the view is amazing the food is less of a priority, but not in this case. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! We had the most incredible experience dining here, and it was all thanks to our AMAZING server Maximus . From the moment we sat down -- a group of seven (four adults and three kids) -- he treated us like absolute VIPs. He was warm, attentive, and genuinely kind. Our drinks were always full, our food came out perfectly timed, and he even took the time to interact with the kids in such a thoughtful, respectful way. It was our daughter's birthday, and he made her feel so special! My mom is in her late 70s had severe diarrhea after eating their shrimp tacos, I had diarrhea and abdominal pain after eating their tortilla soup. My husband got the worst of it had server abdominal pain vomiting x20?times diarrhea and had to go to Hoag Hospital. After eating the mahi-mahi mahi taco. ( which he said it smelled and tasted funny, but the restaurant tried to cover up with a bunch of sauce...) The hospital ER ordered CT scan and showed findings indicative of severe food poisoning!!! He is still in the hospital getting IV and pain meds!!! They could have killed somebody... They should be shut down by the food safety inspectors. What a disgrace this place is. The brie bites came as individual puff pastries topped with both savory and sweet notes. Very yummy! The steak skewers come in a sweet sauce that includes edamame and black beans. An additional dipping sauce is included, but with the sweet sauce so abundant we hardly used the dipping sauce. 4/5 For entrees my son had the Kobe burger. It's a LARGE burger with all the fixin's. Sadly the burger was overcooked and didn't come the way he ordered it. He's not into creating a fuss and did not complain until we got home. I had the Turkey Club, which was also a large sandwich, but was delicious. Overall, this restaurant is so fun and a great place to take out of town company or go with someone you'd like to spend time with. There is a gift shop(also amazing staff) and visitor center to explore, making it even more inviting. I have a staycation in nearby Laguna Beach every 6 months, and every stay includes a breakfast at Beachcomber. Although I've enjoyed both lunches and dinners here, early breakfast, especially on a weekday, is when Beachcomber is most peaceful. It can get crazy crowded here at peak times, when reservations are essential and waits can be very long. Nestled in Crystal Cove State Park's Historic District amongst the restored and rentable circa 1920's historic beach cottages, the restaurant is accessed via shuttle bus ($2 per person) or a pleasant walk through a tunnel under Coast Highway. The Los Trancos parking lot is on the inland side of the highway. Parking begins at $5 for a very short time; an all-day pass may be your best value. Note the last phase of restoration of the historic cottages is about two thirds complete. These last cottages sit directly on the beach north of Beachcomber. Other cottages are beachfront to the south or on a bluff above the restaurant. Every visit I walk along the beach to look at the restoration's progress. Beachcomber seating is primarily on a wooden deck shaded by umbrellas in warmer months, and enclosed in a tent with heaters and blankets in colder months. There are a few tables inside. There are no restrooms at the restaurant; you use the ones that all beach/park visitors use. In high season there are also tables set up along the walkway north of the restaurant. The Bootlegger Bar is right next to the restaurant; I don't know if they serve food. The restaurant has always served delicious food more upscale and gourmet (and pricier) than needed or expected for a beachfront eatery. The menu changes over time, although some dishes are always available. For breakfast, I always start with their famous beignets, small puffy clouds of sweet perfection dusted with powdered sugar and served with maple syrup and whipped cream. Some of the best beignets I've had. Later in the day they're served as a dessert with a chocolate sauce, but I prefer the syrup. In the past I've enjoyed their ranch skillet, crab cake benedict, corned beef hash and steak chilaquiles. They often have a special omelette of the day, and that's what I've ordered more recently. This last time it was crab with asparagus, tomatoes and a hollandaise sauce--delish! I always get the roasted potatoes and sourdough toast, but fruit, tomatoes or cottage cheese can be chosen. Service is always friendly. A perfect place to have an upscale meal on the beach. For a more casual meal, the Crystal Cove Shake Shack is located right off the highway. They have a very small parking lot that cars wait along the highway to enter. From the park you can take the stairs up. read more

We hadn't been to this beach before and were looking to find something cute near the water. Well this place was just the ticket. We got to watch the sunset from our table, which really set a nice ambiance. It is RIGHT on the sand and has such a cute vibe. You can tell it's been there forever and has a history to it. It was super kid friendly- actually had the best kids menu activities I've ever seen- my kids enjoyed it so much that they brought it home to finish it. The kids menu also had a great selection. I tried some of my son's fish and chips that were really tasty and fresh. It also came with cute little smores! The adults in our group had a hard time deciding on the menu so we opted to order a few different things and share them. Some appetizers and shareable sides- the ahi tacos, mini lobster rolls, truffle and mushroom mac. All absolutely delicious. And the icing on the cake was the amazing beignets! They are different than any I've had- almost like they use puff pastry dough- so light and flaky and oh so delicious with the warm syrup and powdered sugar! I walked back to her and let her know I would like a table outside but the two girls replied with a bad attitude letting me know it will be a wait again and said if I take your name off I can't guarantee a table anymore. But save room for the not to be missed, adult root beer with ice cream and vanilla vodka for dessert. You won't go wrong with any of the main dishes on the menu. All are prepared with care and creativity. If you just want a drink, the Bootlegger bar makes great drinks and if you change your mind about eating, get fabulous appetizers served in the bar. This is a special place set in vintage Crystal Cove with it enchanting cottages, spectacular tide pools, and white sand beaches. From the moment you get on the shuttle from the parking lot, step back in time to the 1940-50's with the music that is playing. Everyone becomes friendly, talkative and helpful. I've eaten here 6 times and very much prefer to walk from the parking lot, through the tunnel and emerge into the fascinating cottage area and beautiful beach. This time the four of use brought a blanket, a bottle of something and wine glasses and enjoyed watching the sun set on the Pacific Ocean. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu (for example, she answered my question about the Coq au Vin ingredients, including the wine used). The vast majority of foods I've had here have been quite good. This time, I was disappointed with my choice. For example, I thought that the chicken breast portion of the Coq au Vin was over cooked: cooked that long, I thought that only dark meat should have been used. My cousins took me here for birthday lunch. You have to park across the street on Crystal Cove because the closer parking lot is for handicap parking only. Parking across the street was $15.50 paid through a QR code you can scan. There is a $2 shuttle that takes you to the restaurant area. Or you can walk across the street or down the walking trail, which we chose the walking trail and I recommend that! Next, you will be walking in sand to get to the restaurant. The girl who took our name and ID to get a buzzer was rude. But our server was extra friendly and attentive! We started with a few drinks and the Ahi nachos. The Ahi was so delicious and buttery. This was my favorite dish! 10/10 recommend. We all kind of just shared food so next we had the lobster roll. I'm not sure what it was but it was just too rich. That's just my opinion. The fish and chips were delicious as well! The clam chowder was just whatever. I'd order it again just because I love clam chowder but I'm also not picky about it. My hubby tried this place for dinner for the first time while waiting for the sunset. There was a long queue so we waited for atleast 45 mins before we were seated. We ordered the Ceviche de Cameron and Brioche lobster rolls and it was both good. I also had the Big Bad bloody Mary and it is quite big so it is good for sharing. I also ordered a cup of clam chowder with extra buttered brioche and it was also good. My hubby ordered the Miso Glazed butter fish but he said it didn't taste fresh so he didn't finish it.
