Wow - this was a total knock out. We got a suggestion from a friend to try this place out - it's a small bar next to Zio's pizza on Howard Street. They said it had traditional and specialty drinks, so not being heavy drinkers, we figured we'd give it a try. Wow! The drinks (and the drink artistry) were excellent. At one point, I saw one of the bar tenders mixing a drink over his head in his right hand, while stirring a pitcher with his left hand, and the smile never left his face. I tried a Flowers of Chevais (sic), and my wife had to remind me to sip - it tasted really great, and my wife had the Hera and Aphrodite which she managed to sip. The drink had Absinthe. We wrapped up with a Snowfall in Denmark, which came with a snow pea pod. I should note that to start thinks off, the staff served us with a tall glass each full of icy-cold water, which was incredibly refreshing and welcome. You can also get some of the traditional drinks like an Old Fashioned. Everything is made with top drawer liquor, so you're talking $10 per drink, but they were really good drinks. read more

Came here on a colleague's recommendation and loved the place at the first instant. Very cozy and had a very large list of spirits to choose from. I had a wonderful tequila based cocktail ( can't remember the name of it) which was a recommendation by the server upon knowing I am a big tequila fan. We loved the drinks and had a fun time. This is a great place for a couple, very cozy, perfect amount of light and the sitting at the tables is also very cozy. If you want to impress him or her, definitely pick this place. My wife and I have been to this establishment over a dozen times... The waiter, Lucas, COMPLETELY disrespected my wife by trying to claim she was drunk on the FIRST hello. No, "hello, how are you guys this evening?" From the FIRST sentence.... Total and utter bullshit. We just finished dinner and drinks and he had the nerve to make a split second judgement where he was completely unprepared to make the call on a complete stranger. He tried numerous times to "let's start over" where he then proceeded to accuse us of being over served. I get where a person is trying to not over served but it's 1145 at night and we were trying to enjoy a final night cap before heading to the hotel and calling it a night.... But this a**hole decided he was going to dictate our night by misjudging someone. He asked us to "leave and I'm not going to serve you" before retracting said statement realizing he probably misspoke. This is completely disrespectful and unprofessional. This is the LAST time we or any of my friends will be supporting this establishment. I typically don't wish ill will, but I hope this establishment fails miserably and goes under. read more

Been to this place a handful of times, always had good service and delicious drinks. However, last night (Oct 6) the service left an even worse taste in my mouth then the wine. My friend ordered the house red, with low expectations as it is a house (that being said so you wouldn't think to yourself well it is a house), and it tasted terrible and that is describing it nicely. All four of us gave it ago, and turned it into a would you rather lick the ground or finish the glass of wine. Two of the four would rather lick the ground. So we ordered a new drink. After my husband had paid (we specifically waited until afterwards), I told the waitress "hey not sure when this wine was opened but all four of us thought it tasted terrible" to which she responded with an attitude "well I just opened it a few hours ago" and turned and walked away. Not an appropriate way to handle the situation at all. The other drinks were delicious, but I would rather have mediocre drinks and great service. Probably won't be back for awhile. read more

Absolute gem of a place in Omaha. Happened to stop by on a less crowded early Saturday night. Ambiance is romantic and cozy with plush velvet seating that is half booth style and have table based. The serving staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Our drinks cam out in reasonable speed. The menu had a lot of variety of styles of drinks, all with a floral/fruity edge to them. if you're not sure what you want, you can tell the server what spirit and tastes you like and the bartender will whip something up off-menu! My only watchout was that all the menu drinks tend to err on the side of being pretty sweet (I like less sweet) and the house sparkling wine was not the best. However, overall this was a perfect talk-all-night date spot with good ambiance and service so will definitely come back if I'm in Omaha! read more

I love this gem of a locally owned business, but am giving 4 stars because in my opinion, many of the craft made cocktails are hard to drink. The price point is a bit high and reminds me of another favorite, V. Mertz, but, (sorry there's a "but") again many of the cocktails here are liquor/liqueur only and hard to swallow (for me). I had some options available on the easier drinking/sweeter side and LOVED the Peche cocktail. Was like eating a fresh peach! Props for comparing to a fine dining establishment, though! What I love: the location and feel of the place. The service is stellar. Fabulous attention to detail when it comes to the art of crafting drinks; a splendid thing for folks to enjoy. The cocktails that are made with mixers are amazing. (My boyfriend loved the hard stuff). The clientele is eclectic and that's cool. A wonderful place to sit and relax! The bar staff is knowledgeable and friendly. It has truly coined the term craft cocktail, one can tell each cocktail on the menu has been carefully thought out and created. The quality of the cocktails are above par just as the decor is inside. If you don't know much about craft cocktails that isn't an issue, the staff is so welcoming. My fiencé wasn't sure what to order, so they made him something special. Talk about 5 star service! There is no way to feel out of place in this setting. This is a must stop in Omaha, if you are in the Old Market and don't stop here you are making a mistake. Bravo! read more

This place is definitely one of a kind for getting the most unique crafty cocktails. We went here as recommended by local friends. For late Saturday night, the wait was less than ten minutes. It was intriguing how they curtain the bar area while you are waiting so as not to spoil the surprise of the interior. Upon entering, I loved the wall art, dim lighting, and gold shimmer booths. Definitely a nice spot for a date or casual conversation with friends. It is nice that they do a 'no standing' policy so the place isn't crammed full. There were so many options to choose from on the menu. While I am not usually an avid gin drinker, I opted for the typhoon. It sold me with the mention of fresh coconut milk and kaffir lime leave in a drink. It was really good and came laced with a swirly cucumber slice. My friend got the snowflake in Denmark vodka drink, which was also really good. My husband opted for the Trinidad smoke. Interesting drink for sure. I was not a fan, but didn't expect to be. He enjoyed it. These drinks definitely pack a lunch and it is fun to watch the bartenders make them. While they are more expensive than your average cocktail, I can see why and it is worth it for an occasional fun drink. This place is like something you could find in upscale NYC or Chicago. A rare gem in Nebraska, but definitely a one drink stop for us. I'd come back to try another fun one off of the menu. Sorry to rain on the lovefest, folks... Gorgeously set in the foyer of a converted former factory building in the Old Market, the ambiance of B&R is dark, chic, and sexy. It's exactly the kind of place I want to drink an expertly-made cocktail by a true mixologist who takes great pride in his or her craft. There's a growing number of these speakeasy-like joints that have sprouted up in recent years to quench America's sudden and insatiable thirst for classic cocktails and sophisticated mixed drinks. From Pegu Club in Manhattan, to Bellocq in New Orleans, and now The Berry & Rye in Omaha, I've gained enough experience drinking at these types of establishments to know what the winning formula is. One critical piece of the formula is the bond that forms between the bartender and their patrons. The best places are staffed with friendly, knowledgeable, and unpretentious professionals, eager to make your drink and who will earnestly listen to your stories with an undetectable lack of interest. They'll wear an honest smile to mask their aggravation when you attempt to challenge them with an obscure cocktail, or request a drink that requires one of those strange ingredients they don't stock behind the bar. They'll stay calm and cool under pressure as the bar begins to back up, continuing to maintain their poise and affability despite the stress that lies beneath. Unfortunately, at B&R we got a sense that we were uninvited guests that had crashed a private party. That my colleague first ordered a Penicillin, only to find that the bartender had no idea what one was, was probably what got us off on the wrong foot. (I know, it's a New York thing, but still...) And I didn't make things any better by ordering a Ramos Gin Fizz, only to be told with a huff of frustration that they don't carry cream. But the final straw came as I made a simple attempt to express my wonder and curiosity watching a drink being made with pats of butter and inquiring what it was, only to be shushed away and told essentially to leave him alone because he was busy. I get it. Heart surgeons probably don't want to be talked to either when they are operating on a patient. Honestly, I really wasn't trying to bother the poor guy. I was genuinely interested in what was going on and was simply trying to show my appreciation. Like I said, I've been to many, many places like this. And in most of them, the people who work behind the bar revel in their celebrity and bond with their fans. I can recall one slow night at the Flatiron Lounge in NYC when I bashfully asked the bartender if he would mind making me my beloved but difficult Ramos Gin Fizz. He looked at me and said, "Why would in the world would I mind? That's my job." Right. That Ramos Gin Fizz was delicious. I was happy, and my tip reflected it, so he was happy too. And that's the way it should work. I've had many great cocktails poured for me since coming to Omaha regularly. There's no need to submit to attitude when you are paying your hard earned money for an expensive drink. read more

BEWARE: The "Trinidad Smoke" cocktail will lay you out if you're not accustomed to smoking maduros. I enjoy cigars fairly regularly and I've never had a nicotine rush like that before (consider, the cocktail is made with pipe tobacco syrup from S.G. Roi; probably Lane 1-Q). It's a pretty small place, so don't be surprised if you have to wait to get in. They advertise that they do not allow standing in the bar, everyone must be in a seat. A large group of folks came in shortly before we left, and many folks were standing. I'm not sure if this will be standard practice, but only time will tell. The bartenders are really friendly and knowledgable about liquor and cocktail making. This is definitely not the place to come get wasted at on a Friday night, but really just a place to relax and have a nice drink. I was brought here by my date to try a drink called the Trinidad Smoke. This is a rum drink that is served smoked with aromatic pipe tobacco. I am a cigar and pipe smoker so this was one to try and it did not disappoint! There were only a couple other people there that evening so it was nice and relaxing. The bartender was very nice and knowledgeable. He describe the process of making this drink in great detail and maybe let a few secrets slip. I have to agree with other reviewers. Place is great, relaxing place to sip on a cocktail and relax. They have a huge menu of cocktails with unusual mixes and flavors. A great place to experiment with different cocktails. Interior well done with custom mural on wall. Service is excellent (every server I had would discuss cocktails for hours)! Can be a bit pricey per drink but this is not your "beer and a shot" place. Also, they would like you to make reservations (guess that is for the serious cocktailers). We were in town to visit friends. One of the friends suggest we go here post our dinner. We entered around 10pm on a Friday night. There is a hostess to seat you. Since there was only two of us we got a small bench in the back. I think I get the vibe they are going for but not sure they hit the mark with the spray painted mural in the back. Living in Austin we see these type of places often. I ordered Lovely Peach and my husband ordered a Manhattan. I am impressed the Manhattan came in the proper glass. I would never order a drink with Tito's in it. It is an Austin brand that everyone in Austin hates. Tito's is NOT handmade. However, I didn't really like anything else on the menu. The Lovely Peach was very sweet. The straw was a real metal straw. Our waiter wasn't too engaged. Brought us the drinks and then never came back. Finally, we singled for our check and decided to call it a night. OK place in the Market area. It was our first night in Omaha (workout shorts and shirts). People seemed underdressed for a night out but again could be the vibe of Omaha. The noise wasn't so loud to hear the person you were with, which is a plus. Pretty neat bar. All the drinks are made right in front of you with fresh ingredients. Very creative cocktails as well. My girlfriend and I had five drinks and I wish I could remember them all. Not because they were high alcohol, but we went a few days ago. One that stands out was the Trinidad Smoke. I really liked that the bartender warned me about the drink first though. It is a really cool drink to watch being made, but if you don't like cigars the Trinidad Smoke isn't for you. The Trinidad Smoke tastes like the end of a cigar, which I like. Anyways, great bar and cool atmosphere. We sat at the bar and were able to talk with the other patrons and bartenders. I have to mention their water. Oh my god. Best water ever. If you like your drinks done really well, go here. Great for the beginning of a night or just for a few. read more
