Although, we never frequented Uncle Herbs, I have fond memories of passing this place on my way to the beach with my family. I'm happy that a great restaurant is occupying this space. Uncle Herb's used to be the go-to place for my family and I after Sunday Mass; however, ever since it switched ownership a few years ago, I hadn't been able to stop in until recently. My family and I came in around 8am on Sunday. We were seated quickly, given our drinks in a flash, and our orders came out in no time. The service was definitely 5 stars! There was always someone checking in on us and making sure our drinks were topped off. The reason for the low rating, food was not up to par with Uncle Herbs. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and it was over seasoned. I was caught off guard with my first bite. The hash browns were also disappointing. They were STALE as if they had been out for hours. Ate one bite, I didn't mess with it again. I had a bite of my mom's Pork Chops and they too were salty. I also tried my sister's customized omelette was bland. My dad didn't say anything about his Del Chef omelette so that means he didn't care for it. I probably won't be back as there's other breakfast places around the area. That's a pretty BOLD CLAIM: "The BEST..." Makes me look back at all the amazing food experiences I've had & intentionally compare them. This can be good OR very bad. Nonetheless, we walked in for breakfast with an open mind and hunger pangs! This mom & pop joint is located close to the intersection of Saviers Rd. and Pleasant Valley Rd. It's an old school diner, in a not so fancy part of town. Usually there's ample parking and we've always been seated promptly. Customer service is always on point, and today's visit was no exception. Rubi was our primary server, pleasantly friendly and attentive throughout our visit. We sampled a few menu items... *CORNED BEEF HASH & EGGS ($8.50): This brought back happy memories of childhood. My pops loved corned beef hash. None of the fancy stuff, just good 'ole canned Navy hash. He would always make it shaped like a hamburger patty and slightly crisped, too. The CBH here also comes from a can and it was prepared just the way pops would. Add to that, nicely crisped hash browns ( you can option for O'Brien potatoes) and eggs prepared just as requested... Ahhh, the joys of comfort food done right. Belly satisfaction indeed! *SAUSAGE & EGGS ($7.95): My little man killed this! Didn't even give me a chance to sample anything on the plate. "How was it son?" He replies, as he smiles and shows me his belly, "I LOVED it. I am SO full." Two good sized plump sausages, crispy hash browns, scrambled eggs... DONE. *CHOCOLATE CHIP BELGIAN WAFFLE ($8.75): Standard sized waffle here. The chocolate chips are scattered on top and not mixed in the batter. They still melted quickly and were ooey gooey by the time we cut into the waffle. Crisp exterior, but inside is a little too doughy. And as it cooled, the inner waffle consistency got even heavier/denser. So much, that my waffle lovin' munchkin wasn't diggin' it so much and only ate a fourth. It's decent, just not close to what I would consider "the best." *JUNIOR FRENCH TOAST COMBO ($4.99): This also quickly disappeared! My light eater chose scrambled eggs and bacon to accompany the meal. I was able to get one bite of this regular version of french toast. It's decent, with a slight sponginess inside, slight firmness outside. Having been recently privy to some AMAZING french toast, this was nowhere near that. But, to my son, he loved it and devoured it... that's what counts. For the most part, what we were served today would make us fans, except for the waffle, which was A-OK, and I've certainly had better. Food arrived promptly and warm. Service was wonderful. Quite a variety of things to sample on the menu and maybe try sometime down the line. I can't agree with "The Best" claim, but good... yes, and pretty good for Oxnard. The Best Breakfast Cafe is a solid south end breakfast spot that had all the odds stacked against it and has still managed to make it work. In fact, going to BBC is like hanging with a friend who's also good friends with your ex. One way or another the topic of discussion always leads you to the past. Located at the old Uncle Herb's, it's difficult not to reminisce. Uncle Herb's was legendary and while BBC may have added insoles and two pair of double thick socks to do it, it's managed to fill some big shoes. The service is above average and the food is solid. You won't find a chile verde omelette on the menu but you can ask for it and it's the best in town. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever eat here without think about you know who but in the end we must move on and you could do a lot worse than Best Breakfast. All the guys here are buff as hell and they are very respectful and masculine. The head chef is ripped and even bigger than the waiters. The waiters periodically check in you and the head chef greets every table at the end of and makes sure each guest enjoyed their meal. I found the service at this place more respectful and more professional than the high class restaurants that I have been to. We arrived around 11-ish AM after a night of debauchery in a group of 14 people. When I tell you that all the servers in that restaurant had a mini freak-out...due to in part of the excitement of representing 60% of the current restaurant population and due to in part because of the amount of young adults...I probably would be understating the severity of the situation. They were willing to split the check even though the menu stated no split checks in parties larger than 8 people. Our waitress was very accommodating and maintained our drink availability during our experience. They even sang Happy Birthday to our birthday girl and provided a warm slice of apple pie. It was very welcoming. I enjoyed a large mimosa which contained mostly brut champagne. For the price of $4, I was already winning. It paired nicely with my breakfast burrito containing a chorizo scramble. All served with a side of red potatoes and peppers, the meal was very filling. All-in-all the experience was pleasant. The sauce had tapitillo infused in it. The more you ate the hotter it got. Wow... He praised the meal every bite he took. Mine was just what you expect at a safe dish as ham and eggs. I've been meaning to try this place but since I'm not often in South Oxnard, I never get the chance. Well, with a long wait at Mrs. Olsen's Coffee Hut, we decided to check out The Best Breakfast Cafe. Nice comfy vibe as soon as we arrived. I guess this place used to be a very popular place that closed down years ago. I wasn't around back then, so I don't have anything to compare it to but it seemed like a good location. I noticed they only have booths while I prefer a table. We ended up at the counter which was fine. Service was excellent and attentive. Our server kept offering more. The menu seemed pretty standard for a breakfast joint. I ordered my usual, eggs with sausage, O'brien potatoes and an English Muffin. The meal was excellent. Sausages were fat and tasty. The potatoes had the right amount of zing via some diced green onions and tasted great mixed with the yolk from my eggs and some Tapatio sauce. My friend had a custom omelet and said it was also very good. I'd definitely come back if I was in the area. I might even make a special trip just to come back. read more
