Decent spot on the main strip of Encinitas. The name is unfortunately quite misleading, don't expect any bier garden of the caliber of stone. There's not really any garden at all, only a small outdoor space. The bar is pretty nice and I like how it wraps around to the outside as well. Menu is pretty standard, elevated bar fair. Nothing out of this world, burgers and sandwiches and such. I've eaten here a few times and everything is satisfying, but nothing I would crave or that makes me want to come back. There's a modest beer selection and it's not too packed generally in my experience. Right smack in the middle of Encinitas with shopping, bars and other fun stops. Oh and a great beach blocks away. Biergarten is a bit of a misnomer because it's so much more. Yes, great beers are rolling out every minute, but I almost lost it when the Bloody Mary rolled out. The food is something for everyone from great flatbread to huge burgers, but two things I love. Grab a seat out front and people watch. The best from young to older surf types to tourists wandering to hard core beautiful people. All fun. Best part is they aren't pet friendly, they are pet loved. Water is served first to the pups and then us. Gotta love that. Great spot, easy parking behind and always great service! read more

Busy and happy atmosphere! Great beer selection and fun yummy food. Bathrooms are nearby entrance and were clean and modern. The music is played perfectly loud. I love that the indoor and outdoor is merged and one can sit right there in between. I decided to tip 18% and not 25% and the waitress got rude, she did not say "thank you", did not hand me a receipt she just turned her back and left. Hence, 3 stars and there is so much to choose from around here on 101 so I won't come back. Impolite service is the one thing I avoid at all cost. read more

We've been coming here for years but recently this place has gone WAY downhill. Multiple times now, they've added extra items onto our bill, especially when sitting at the bar. The food is fine, the service is honestly hit or miss, and usually they are playing the music way too loud. Bummer. I've been in the food service industry my entire career and I'm never one to complain or send food back but this experience today deserves this review. I had just gotten off of the beach so I was very hungry and I asked the server what he thought was good on the menu because it was my first time here. The server recommended the short rib nachos over just about everything else so I decided to take him up on his suggestion. Big mistake. The food came out in time and my friends cheeseburger and fries were very hot, but my nachos were completely cold. I told the waiter that I never complain about food because I've been in the industry, and I was so hungry that I tried to force myself to eat it, but it was literally inedible. I had pretzel bites and had ordered a second beer after they said that they would fix the problem. The second round of nachos came out and was a little bit better but again not very hot at this point I was just very hungry so I wanted to eat. The server said they were sorry for my experience several times but when the check came not one of my beers or any of my appetizers or my meal was even remotely discounted. As somebody who's worked in the hospitality industry for so long that should just be a standard practice at that point. I was charged full price for all of my items after I sent back food that was too cold after waiting for it twice. Just seems like bad business and especially when someone apologizes for it profusely a number of times but still doesn't actually do anything to prove that they care about the customer. More of a gastro pub, The Bier Garden, is more than just beer. I counted 15 types of Tequilas/Mezcals and 19 types of Whiskeys on their menu. The atmosphere is open and there seems to be plenty of action going on. We had plenty of sun on this day, so we ate on the back patio - all shade and quite a bit quieter. But there was still plenty of people watching. The staff was attentive. I really liked that we were reminded that Happy Hour was about to close and if we wanted another round. We were there for Bones & Brew night (which coincided with a local car show on Hwy 101). As you can see from my pic, the ribs were fairly meaty. They were cooked such that the meat fell off the bone - no tugging required. The dry rub and sauce were both mild. The sauce had a nice sweet taste and tang. They were good and filling. We also had the Socal Chicken Salad. The roasted chicken breast was dry and overcooked. The greens were fresh, and medley of corn, black beans, pico de gallo and queso fresco all worked well. The chipotle ranch dressing had a mild tang and complimented the salad. read more

We sat at the bar inside & obviously expected a positive experience so we were shocked when we encountered thee rudest bartenders i have ever met. My friend and I had a great late lunch experience at this fun restaurant on Monday. Jessica was our waitress, and I have never been served more quickly. For example, I asked her for recommendations for light beers. She listed three that she thought I would like and offered me a taste of each one. My friend ordered his beer at the same time. Within a minute from her leaving the table, the three tastes and his full beer arrived. We could not believe how quick that was. When she followed up with me and asked me which one I liked, that one arrived within one minute also. Our food arrived very quickly and the orders were correct. I did chat with Luis, the Manager, and let him know how impressed I was with the speed of service. They really are using the toast system to its full extent. During COVID 2020 and the pandemic got to sit and dine at the Bier Garden and it was well worth the wait. Having a place with sidewalk dining and a large patio was great because they were still able to comfortably sit a lot of parties spaced out for our safety. The first time we dined there was on the patio and the second time was on the large patio. I love the quaint and cozy feel of the neighbourhood and the ambiance of the restaurant. Our servers both time despite being swamped were courteous and helpful and made fabulous recommendations. The menu is great and has such delicious and fresh items. Their patio is also dog friendly. Our baby girl, Princess Zelda, goes most places with us so venues have to be. They have an extensive beer list and a great drink selection, too. Haven't been back to restaurant since 2021 but I definitely need to especially since they made it through the pandemic. read more

Came here late on a Thursday night when most places on the block had stopped serving food. We checked in with the server Jessica who was super welcoming and said they were serving dinner until 10pm. I can't comment on their beer selection since we didn't try any! We ordered the Tennessee hot chicken sandwich with a side of truffle fries and the blackened and grilled mahi tacos and drinks. They also have the option to make the alcoholic drinks into a mocktail version which I appreciated. The Tennessee hot chicken sandwich was good although not spicy at all, but we appreciated the dressing it was served with. The truffle fries were good, although it depends on how much you enjoy the flavor of truffle. My friend found the fish taco a bit "fishy" tasting, but still ate it all. The nachos served with the tacos were perfectly crispy and added a good crunch. Our service was prompt and friendly and despite the late hour, we weren't rushed at all. We had a girls day in Encinitas with brunch, shopping, and sweet treats along the way. This was a nice restaurant that has lots of tables for indoor or outdoor dining. Since it was a beautiful sunny day, we decided to dine outdoors. The restaurant was beautiful and the wait staff were courteous; however the food wasn't as great as we had expected. Two of us had the grilled cheese & tomato soup. The grilled cheese was delicious; however, the pesto that was added to the top of the tomato soup made it very oily. It would've been perfect without the pesto. That oil ruined the soup. Two of us had the quinoa & beet salad. It was interesting how the salad was called "quinoa" and beet salad when it barely had any quinoa. A better name for this salad would've been pecans & beets salad....nevertheless, we enjoyed it. The ahi tuna poke was not very good. It looked prettier than it tasted. Not the freshest ahi tuna poke. The sandwich was just ok. Some of us enjoyed the food more than others. Overall, it was an average experience, not horrible, but not great either. read more

This is the perfect place if you have a hangover or you are trying to start one! You can grab a seat on the back patio if you want some quiet or sit in the front and watch the strollers with cute babies roll by. They always have a great beer selection (kinda in the title) and solid pub fare. I like the burger menu because it does not list dozens of different set ups. You can't go wrong with any of them. The Fig and goat cheese burger my wife got was a great mix of sweet and salty and the burger - bun - condiment ratios were all spot on. I tried the Nashville chicken. I have been sampling fried chicken sandwiches around San Diego recently and have concluded that even the best ones are not better than a burger. It wasn't that spicy or crunchy, but was enough of both to be good. Get the ONION RINGS as a side. They are most excellent. read more

And the fact that we returned after initial visit shows its a winner. Food. Food is so good. They really have something for everyone: That rich comfort food, delicious bar food, great healthier salad options. The first visit I had to get the bruschetta grilled cheese with tomato soup. The photos completely sold me and it is a worthy selection! Then the latest visit I got the cardiff crack chili in sourdough bread bowl currently on special. WOW, soo soo good and huge! Come hungry for that one. I didn't expect it to be so large and sadly had to leave most of the bread behind (as a bread lover that makes me pretty sad). Great location on the center of town. Big space with plenty of seating. We got a couple of drinks here and maybe this is a premeditated review, but I thought it was, "meh!" The drinks are decent but a few of the staffers that work here seem to not want to be here. I understand it's work, but put a smile on. Bartender, be friendly and positive, it's more appealing than a stick in the mud. The entire decor of the place is odd as well. This place is called Bier Garden, but I don't get a German vide at all. Instead surf videos are on loop, a giant fake tree is in the center of the restaurant and a picture of a scuba diver on a wall inside. It's a mix mash of a bunch of odd decorations put together. Look at your bill carefully when they hand you the hand held credit card reader. I thought my initial experience was a mistake. My server put a 20% gratuity on my bill. It was just my daughter and I for lunch. Not a large group that would incur a mandatory 20% tip. I worked my way through college as a bartender/ server at Applebee's. I witnessed coworkers hiding a tip in the bill in hopes the customer will not notice the deception. I paid the 20% and left no additional tip. The next time we ate at the restaurant the same thing happened. The server put a 20% gratuity on the check. Again, not a large group, just the two of us. If you don't look carefully you can easily add a tip on top of the 20% they already put on the bill. This deception is kind of sad. What a cool place. Also, my boyfriend ordered the Cardiff Crack sandwich, which we have had Cardiff Tri Tip many times, and this sandwich was extremely wimpy on the meat portion. Came in for an early dinner with friends and were able to get a table inside. The ambiance of the restaurant is cute and I like the open look to enjoy the beach weather and busy street. It took a little while for the waitress to take our orders and the food to come out but wasn't crazy long. My boyfriend and I shared the southwest fried chicken sandwich and really enjoyed it. It had loads of flavor and they even cut it in half for us. It had quite the kick, luckily we both love spice but we thought it might be good to name it spicy or have some sort of symbol letting people know as it wasn't super obvious upon ordering how much spice would be on it. The side of fries were simple and good and the ranch was yummy. Everyone seemed to like their food. The only con was my friend mistakenly ordered the chicken sandwich with no bacon without realizing there was other pork products on it so he had to send it back.
