I have lived in the area for years and never eaten here. Was I in for a surprise. I ordered the pancake combo and added a biscuit. I was impressed by the fast service, I was seated fast, got water fast, I've rarely seen a server racing around like this girl. But she was good. When I got my order I nearly gaped at the size of the pancakes!!! 2 that were almost too big to fit on their plate. I ate about 1/4th of one along with the eggs and bacon and took the rest home. I like this place. It was very empty but Monday is a slow day most places. I've driven by other days and there are no spaces in the lot. Excellent place and I will come back for more. read more

We tried this place yesterday after church. Let me start off by saying that I never like writing bad reviews. I myself rely on reviews before trying places. Okay, so in saying that... this place does't even deserve the 1 star. I noticed they hadn't received an awarded Top Restaurant sticker like they had in years passed. This may be why... It wasn't the 27 minute wait outside that bothered me. I can appreciate small places and large crowds. The parking lot is a nightmare! Not only can you not turn around, but when you go back to Hwy. 40 to swing back around, it's a one way. So plan on going to the light a couple of times. Also, I know they can't help who frequents their restaurant, but while waiting I had to distract my young daughter from reading the shirt of the woman waiting aside us. Which read, "Men suck because they're M----F----ers", only it read the entire thing. What bothered me is how filthy our table and chairs were when we were finally seated. I had to dust off my chair before sitting. I'm not just being picky... it looked like a toddler had maybe sat there before me and wiped their hands on everything. Still... I'm a Mom, I get it. I cleaned it off. The waitress came over and looked frazzled. No smile, very impatient stance while asking what we would like. I told her we had never been here so I would need to look at the menu. He response: For drinks? I said okay, I'll take coffee. It was rushed and unprofessional. Honestly if I had time to look at the menu I would have ordered lunch and gotten water, but instead chose breakfast based on my rushed coffee request. The food was greasy and cold. We didn't even eat 1/2 of our food and I felt sick for the rest of the day. So for my husband, 11 year old daughter, and myself the check was $40!!! What?! We noticed she charged my daughter food as sides instead of her kids meal. Our waitress never did come back so we couldn't tell her. We bit the bullet and just left cash (plus tip because I'm not a jerk) on the table. We will NEVER go back. My favorite meal of the day is breakfast! I love a day when you can enjoy a slower morning, with a leisurely meal and great company! If the coffee is tasty and the food is good than I will happily chat and munch my morning away with no complaints! However, a 2.5 hour breakfast is pushing it even for me Big Biscuit! I went here with a couple of friends for a birthday brunch on a Saturday and was sorely disappointed! We waiting 20 minutes to be seated which was fine, it was Sunday I get that. But things just went down hill from there, 30 minutes to get coffee, 1.5 hours to get food. 20 minutes to get the check. Disappointed comments from the server that we rushed out before they could do anything for the birthday we were celebrating! Really in 2.5 hours you couldn't figure it out? Not my problem! Well I'm a FAN and when I was working on my "Best Breakfast in the KC Area" list I realized that I'd never done a review. So here goes: The Big Biscuit has been Hubs and my Go-To place on this side of town for quite a number of years. Though they do serve lunch items, we have never eaten anything but breakfast there. For a while after we retired, we found ourselves there nearly every Wednesday to partake in our favorite meal (breakfast) and take advantage of senior discount day which made the reasonable every day prices a real bargain for us. Even now, several years later, we still go there about once a month and we are still able to get a good meal nearly all the time and efficient, friendly service all the time. As you would expect, between Hubby & me, we've worked our way through much of the menu over the years. We have tried every type of menu item from the bacon or sausage, country fried potatoes, toast & eggs to the omelets, the waffles, french toast and pancakes. Even the oatmeal. Our favorites include the Country Benedict, the Kansas City or Bacon & Triple Cheese Omelet for Hubs and the Popeye or Veggie Omelet for me. I also really enjoy both the Biscuits and Gravy and the French Toast. When I'm really hungry, I order the Pecan Waffle Combo that includes two eggs with bacon or sausage. One item we have tried but seldom order at Big Biscuit is pancakes. (I like my homemade ones better) With so many meals under our belt in those years, we have encountered only a very few clunkers. All cooks are not created equal. But I would never hesitate to go there or recommend it to a friend as a good place to meet. read more

This is probably one of the most overrated breakfast places I have visited. Fortunately, I've only visited probably two overrated breakfast places, so that's not saying all that much. The Big Biscuit can be defined by one word: flour. Lots of flour. Big bags o' flour in everything, everywhere, as far as the eye can see. I swear they somehow managed to use flour when they cooked my side order of bacon, although I'll probably never be able to prove it. The Big Biscuit provides humongous portions of whatever flour-based item you order, so from that standpoint alone, you may think you're getting a good deal for their slightly higher priced food. Unfortunately, nearly everything I've ordered there has been painfully bland and flavorless, unless you consider "flour" to be a flavor. The fruit pancakes were overtly banal and dry every time I've ordered them, and the biscuits seemed to retroactively sap the previous12 years of saliva from my mouth. I had no problems with my side orders, but the main biscuity-type menu items simply overwhelmed me with their tasteless, flour-obsessed consistency. Sure you get a lot of pancake for $5.00 or whatever they currently charge, but I'd personally rather get a smaller portion of better food for that price. There is nothing radical or new about this place. They haven't reimagined breakfast and they don't have any funky twists on the dishes you love. They have everything you'd expect from a breakfast diner and that's it. They just do it better than most. It's fresh, homemade food made with care by people who know what they're doing. It's breakfast the way it should be- delicious, warm, and comforting, but also hearty and nourishing. I gave them 4 out of 5 stars and let me tell you why i reserved that 5th star for now: To be called "The Big Biscuit," the biscuits are pretty unremarkable. They're good, but the place is CALLED "THE BIG BISCUIT." If you're going to toot your own horn like that, the biscuits better be on point. They also really need a better entrance/exit system. It's ALWAYS busy at breakfast time, and getting out when you're ready to leave while so many are crossing that very narrow area waiting to be seated can be frustrating. read more

In response to my earlier review, the actual owner of TBB contacted me and went far beyond what most owners or management of any business would do to rectify the situation. Like he said to me, you don't get very far if you don't go out of your way to make sure every customer is happy. I have to say that I'm very impressed at the level of pride the owner takes in his business and am more than satisfied at the resolution. Customer service like this is all too often overlooked in this day and age and makes all the difference in the world. TBB serves quality food, and the owner/management has proven to me that they care not only about their product but their customers, as well. read more

The ONLY reason this restaurant doesn't get five stars from me is its short hours! It opens at 6:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and at 7:30 a.m. on Sundays, which is great for being able to eat breakfast on your way to work, BUT ... It CLOSES at 2:30 in the afternoon, and I love having breakfast foods for supper ... or in the middle of the night. So I would really appreciate it if they were open until 7 or 8 p.m., and 24 hours a day would be even better! The food is pricey, but worth it. It's homestyle cooking at its best. Unless you have a huge appetite, you'll have enough left over to take home for another meal, or at least a snack. I've had their chicken-fried steak, and it's good, but I LOVE their breakfast. The ham steak with scrambled eggs, or a ham and cheese omelette, a side of potatoes ... and those biscuits! The biscuits and gravy is good, too, but I usually get something with a slab of meat. There IS a lot of sausage in their gravy, but I'm a true carnivore, and need even more meat. There are lunch items on their menu: Burgers, a wide variety of sandwiches and wraps, soups and salads, tenderloins, chicken tenders, the above-mentioned chicken-fried steak, etc. But, somehow, whenever I'm here, the breakfast wins out, no matter what the time. The service is friendly and attentive, although when they are really rushed, you might have to wait awhile for a drink refill, etc. And, speaking of waiting, this place is so popular, that if you get there right at mealtime, you'll probably have a wait, so take something to read! Thanks for everyone's reviews. I decided to take the family there for breakfast this morning. It was great! I had the country benedict and it was more than I could eat and I can eat a lot (not a small boy)! The kids snarfed their pancakes down both eating more than I have seen them eat in a while. My wife had one of the specials can't remember the name but it was huge.. .. She couldnt eat it all. The price is good for what we got and the help was very nice. We ate at the Indpendence Hwy 40 location and it was very clean. Was not sure about it from the outside..... Everyone is docking the place for not being open 24 hrs. I can understand why people say that but for a business person I certainly understand why they don't stay open. (If half stars were allowed, this would be 3.5, but it's closer to 4 than 3, so here we are.) First things first, the place lives up to its name. The biscuits are *enormous*, and as something of a biscuit connoisseur, I have to say they are excellent as well. Fluffy, but not cakey, tender, just the right crumb, and flaky only on the outside, as all biscuits should be. The hashbrowns are so awesome -- crispiest I've ever had anywhere -- and they make good eggs too. Really good pancakes and waffles, but don't spring for any of the flavored varieties. They don't cook your, e.g., pecans and cranberries into the pancake; they just sprinkle some pecans and cranberries on top, which is disappointing. They also get points off for having no breakfast meat that isn't pork. This is a golden age for turkey, beef, and chicken sausage! It's time to get on board that train. The service is excellent once you're sitting down; all the servers I've encountered are friendly and easy with recommendations and substitutions. I am a bit picky when it comes to eating eggs, because the thought of eating undercooked whites makes me gag, but at the same time nothing tastes worse (or makes my mouth dryer) than a yolk that is cooked all the way through. I explained to the server how I like my eggs cooked and she totally got it. My eggs came out cooked to perfection and I don't get to say that about most places. For $4.99 I also got hash browns, the namesake gigantic biscuit, and sausage links. I ate every bite (and every bite was delicious), except the sausage which my husband ate for me, in addition to his mayberry breakfast, which was a sausage omelette, biscuit and gravy, and hash browns. That is such a bargain to me. I left feeling full and I can't do that for 5 dollars very often. Our server was very friendly, but she didn't come around very often. It was closer to noon when we came so the restaurant wasn't terribly busy. Their website says that this is the original location, which is really cool. Down in KC to visit my girlfriend's hometown, she wanted to take me here as it was one of her favorite spots for breakfast growing up, and she figured I would really dig it--boy was SHE right! After reading reviews, I was really looking forward to a good breakfast. I am a sausage gravy & biscuit aficionado. And, with a name like "The Big Biscuit," the biscuits would be amazing. Right? WRONG. I had the Country Benedict. The service was sub par, the sausage gravy was so bland that even with adding hot sauce, pepper & salt it could not be improved. The biscuits? I could have made a better biscuit opening a can of Grands Biscuits. I was expecting so much more. The parking lot was packed. This just makes me wonder if that is because there are no other breakfast choices in the area. I recently moved East, right on the border of Kansas City, Independence & Raytown. I would have given The Big Biscuit 1 star, but the fact is, is that I know it to be better than it was today. But then again, I haven't been there in nearly 5-6 years. I made a reservation for the St. Paul UMC Church Ladies last week because I know that Wednesdays are, or used to be Senior Day and I knew it would be busy. One of the ladies in the group arrived early to make sure a table was ready and was told that there was no reservation made. Argh! I arrived with my grandmother at 9:40 and luckily the ladies had been accommodated. We ordered our coffee and we figured all would be well. Unfortunately our server did not come back until 10:15 to take our food order. Luckily for them, the kitchen staff is quick and the food came out at 10:30. My grandma and I shared scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, a waffle, sausage patties (for gma as I am a vegetarian) and a biscuit. If you go to The Big Biscuit, you have to get a biscuit and it is the one thing that seems to be done right all the time. The last time I went to the Biscuit I was not a vegetarian and was able to enjoy the gravy too, so I cannot honestly say if the gravy is good. All I know is that it used to be. What I do like about the Biscuit is that food is actually real food! The eggs were actually cracked at the restaurant and scrambled by a cook. The biscuits are made fresh. So, there's the good (italics on the good) thing about the experience today. The manager today made excuses that the reason for the slow service was because a HUGE group of men were sat right before us. That, my friends, is NO excuse. ESPECIALLY when they were EXPECTING (bold italics) that group beforehand. And to be honest, I made a reservation knowing full well that a couple of groups dine there on Monday mornings. So, if I knew what to expect, the staff should have expected it as well. They have been in business for nearly 10 years, if not more! I would describe the way they dealt with today's ordeal as unprofessional and plain sloppy. A business should not just assume (bold italics again) that because they are well known that people will keep coming back. If they want to see what happens to businesses that assume they will stay in business with the same old service, same old food, then they should look across the street at the building that is in the process of replacing the old Stephenson's Restaurant. The Big Biscuit used to be good. And I may go back again, but I was disappointed with the service and to an extent the food because it was cold. Good for the cooks to get it done quick, but bad on the wait staff for bringing it out too late. Food: Could have gone to Denny's for the same meal, but cheaper. Service: They need more staff on Wednesdays. They should know this already though. Would I go back: I plan on going on a different day of the week to assess it differently. Stay tuned. read more

After spending a cold February morning volunteering outside, a friend and I decided that we need some good comfort food to help us warm up. I rarely indulge in carb-heavy meals since I'm so addicted to protein, but this was an exception. Since I was at the Big Biscuit, I had to try their biscuits and gravy (which come in 1/4 orders!). They were everything you would expect: fluffy biscuits smothered in a flour based gravy. I also ordered scrambled eggs, sausage, and a pancake. All were good, satisfying, and a perfect way to warm up after standing outside in sub-zero temperatures! The waitress was very friendly, though after our food was brought it was hard to find her. A gigantic biscuit smothered in delicious gravy, eggs and hash browns or potatoes. I have been going to the location on 40 Highway for at least 8 years and have never had a bad breakfast there. I have tried the Blue Springs location numerous times as well. The Big Biscuit also serves lunch items like salads and burgers. I've eaten of their lunch menu once... It was a good lunch but certainly not the caliber I've come to expect from their breakfast menu. Bottom line? The Big Biscuit is the best breakfast you can eat in Eastern Jackson County. Absolutely one of the best breakfast restaurants in Independence, MO. I have lived in Independence for over four years now and can not believe that I have been missing out on this little gem of a restaurant until a few months ago! I had never been because, from the outside, it doesn't look like much and the hours only go until 2:30pm, I believe. However, curiosity finally got the best of me and my oldest daughter and we decided to take a chance and try it one Saturday. I have to say it is ALWAYS packed on weekends, so expect a wait. It is totally worth it but if you don't like waiting pick a weekday to go. You won't be disappointed! Wait staff is attentive and knowledgable. Can make great recommendations if you don't know what to get. Very friendly and check on you but don't bug you to distraction either. Food is OUT OF THIS WORLD! No kidding, if you love home style foods you will not be disappointed. Great flavor and not killing you with the grease either. Service is also fantastic with exception to wait times for seating on weekends. They have gotten my order right every single time and I am one of those people who always special requests on my orders. I usually find most places can't nail it this often. On my way to Columbia, I wanted to stop for my favorite meal of the day, breakfast. I always look for ma and pa places, you know, to support the locals. A lot of times these places are little hole-in-the-wall joints, but this place is welcoming, clean, and has a very friendly staff. Best of all, my vegetarian omelet was the best I've had in a long time. Better than First Watch for sure! The cook even came out to ask how I liked it! And their oversized biscuit was delicious. We were a little cautious, since we were decked out in the opposing team's apparel, but everyone was still super nice to us. The biscuits were huge and fluffy and delicious. It had been years since I've eaten here and I really didn't remember much. Of course with a name like The Big Biscuit, one would expect the biscuits to not only be, well... BIG, but pretty darned good too since they are the namesake of the restaurant. They did not disappoint. I had the order of 1/2 ham with 2 eggs over easy (thankyouverymuch) a biscuit & a small side of gravy with hash browns. I enjoyed this breakfast for two days. My son had an equally delicious entree with sausage. Reasonably priced for what you get (think leftovers here) and the service was no frills but speedy. The food came out quickly and was finished cooking just seconds before delivered to our table. NIce! No heat lamp/microwaved stuff here. They have great home style meals for breakfast and lunch and their coffee is one of my top 3 favorites in Kansas City (the other 2 are: The Corner Restaurant on Broadway, and The Classic Cup on the Plaza)! Ok, this is the busiest Big Biscuit, so the dining hall isn't always spotless but they are constantly cleaning. It's CONSTANTLY busy, so it gets a bit loud, but the food is worth and makes up for any short comings.
