The corned beef hash was outstanding, crispy where it should be, tender where it counts, and clearly made by someone who actually cares. You can taste the effort. The scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked too. Now, about that "sourdough." I have to confess I'm a bit of a sourdough snob after spending time eating the real deal in San Francisco. This wasn't sourdough. It was good white bread wearing a fake mustache. That said, it was fresh, buttery, and the marmalade was absolutely delicious, so I still happily cleaned my plate. The coffee is self-serve and bottomless, which I actually like. If you're the type who enjoys topping off your own cup whenever you want, it's perfect. If getting up to refill your coffee feels like an Olympic event, you may disagree. Service was friendly, fast, and exactly what you hope for at a breakfast spot, attentive without hovering. We visited around 8:30 on a Saturday morning. Since it's a college town and summer break was in full swing, it wasn't busy at all. I'd expect it to be a much different story once students are back. Overall, I'd absolutely come back. Just one request for The Roost: either upgrade to real sourdough... or call it white bread. My inner bread critic will thank you.

Service started a little slow, though our waitress became more attentive once she came by. We mentioned it was our first visit, so I was a bit surprised there wasn't much guidance on the menu or any recommendations. At one point I asked about the two kinds of fries (I love fries!), and the explanation was simply that they were "fancy fries," without much detail on flavors or differences. We started with drinks and the Brussels sprouts appetizer. The sprouts were actually very good, with a nice balance in the sauce, and both the wine and sangria were refreshing. Unfortunately, dinner is where things went downhill. Our meals -- a steak and a gluten-free chicken sandwich -- took about 45 minutes to arrive, which felt long for relatively simple dishes. I had asked about the gluten-free bun since they can sometimes be dry, but didn't receive much insight beyond "it's gluten free," and sadly it was indeed very dry. The chicken itself lacked flavor, though the goat cheese cilantro sauce helped make it somewhat enjoyable. The fries looked homemade and delicious but arrived cold. The steak was cooked as requested, but it didn't have much flavor beyond the mushrooms on top. The broccoli side was tasty, and the potatoes were good, though it on a bed of Some kind of cheese sauce that wasn't quite to our liking. Overall, the space and gluten-free availability were promising, and the appetizers and drinks were enjoyable, but the food execution and service details didn't quite meet expectations for us this visit.

But the food is really good and the atmosphere is always relaxed (unless the local sportsballers are in peril). I'd suggest a plate of wings, with sauce varieties ranging from the dry rubs & mild to the hottest, which is a habanero blend. Insider tip: ask for your wings to be done 'Danza style', which is where they cook the wings, sauce the wings, then throw them on the grill for that extra char. Spectacular! Specials run every day, and some of them are better than others. For instance, kids eat free on Wednesdays with the purchase of a regular menu entree, Mondays are burger specials, and Saturdays are a KC strip special, which hits you with the salad, steak, & baked potato for $16 - that's a steal. Bar specials are also daily, whether happy hours or featured pints. There is something for everyone and you will get ample portions. It's THE place in east Lawrence to catch the Jayhawks, Chiefs, or, uh, even the Royals with a ginormous 22' screen adorning the east wall. Great spot!

But they now also have interesting choices for lunch and dinner. When we first looked at the menu, we were worried. Many of the dishes include bacon or other meat products. Since we are pescatarians, we cannot eat meat. But looking more carefully, we found a some appealing seafood and vegetarian options. We got the Fish and Chips, the Grilled Salmon dinner (with the Cajun preparation), and the Grilled Fish (white fish) and Shrimp dinner. All were good. The rice that comes with the Grilled Fish and Shrimp dinner does not include chicken stock, so not a problem for us. They also have a Jumbo Shrimp dinner, which we might try next time. I also got the Tomato Basil soup, which was excellent, and did not include chicken stock. We added Cholula sauce to the Tomato Basil Soup. Among the vegetarian options we will try in the future, is the Short Stack (pancakes), which does not include bacon. Among the many soft drinks offered is Cranberry Iced Tea and Cranberry Half and Half. There are many sides from which to choose with the dinners. The fresh fruit really is fresh, and the asparagus is also a good choice. My only disappointment was that they have removed their shrimp pasta from the menu. It had a very good reputation, and even our server told us it was excellent. I hope the owners will change their minds about that and bring back the shrimp pasta.

Usually I have leftovers- but nothing left over last night. I took a slice of cheesecake pie home, and even it was smaller than normal and not as tasty as I expected. All around... it will be a long time before I return and spend money.
