Gator seemed knowledgeable, but he was also non-communicative and very slow. Several times I texted him about the status of my bike without getting a response. Eventually when I finally got him on the phone, I just told him I would pick it up since I was tired of waiting for him to fix it. It had been at least three weeks at that point. Also the photos are misleading/confusing as there is not an actual storefront. He had me meet him in front of what appeared to be an old closed-down salon. I guess a lot of other people had very positive experiences, so maybe it was just an off month for him. read more

So my bike broke a spoke, I brought it in and immediately Gator noticed that more spokes had been replaced already - so the old wheel got recycled and he spent an hour going through parts bikes trying to find a decent replacement - but, no dice. Anyway, after ordering and not receiving a wheel, he went to another shop for the replacement, then he actually delivered the wheel to my house. How can you beat that service? read more

That time I took my #CopenhagenWheel in to the BikeSmith (because they're the "Authorized Superpedestrian Vendor" in ABQ) for truing and not only did they true the wheel quickly and affordably they did a little custom work on the rack installed by another shop that couldn't be bothered to adjust for the way the rack interfered with my breaking - and might have had the effect of helping put my wheel out of true. While I can only address the quality of the repair/tune-up I received here, which was exceptionally thorough, I'm buzzing about the concept and potential. The tune-up took about three days to complete, which is average for a smallish shop, and I loved the follow-up. Like any solid mechanic, they walked me through a point-by-point overview of what they found while working on my old workhorse, and what I could expect to replace come the fall. Once I got the bike back on the trail I immediately noticed the difference; my gears caught beautifully and wheels were clearly realigned. I was moving again. The concept, what they offer and how, is what sets this shop apart from your average inner-city seller. First, they rent some great bikes and kiddo trailers at fair prices (I think $35 was the base cost for a day rental), so it's great for visitors, as well as family or friends who casually ride. But the best part is the location. This shop sits adjacent to a bike/pedestrian path that leads straight to the Bosque. You can park in their lot and start your adventure from here, and on weekends you're just minutes from Bike In Coffee, a great farm and outdoor cafe. They open early, which is ideal for us transplant Midwesterners who turn into pudgy, sweaty globs of burnt skin in the hot New Mexican sun - we like those cool mornings. read more

Need to rent a bike? Go to BikeSmith. Gator is wonderful. He helped fit us to bikes, suggested routes, provided a bike map and was an overall great guy. Rentals can be made online, so it's quick and easy. I did have a question about size when making my reservation, so called and they quickly answered my question. A bike, helmet and water bottle are included in the rental. We brought our own water bottles. They also provide the tools needed to change a flat on each bike in an under-seat pouch. Thankfully we had NO ISSUES with our bikes. The location is right off the Bosque Trail, so it's easy to take a ride on a flat and easy path away from speeding traffic. Perfect for beginners or advanced cyclists. The rental was a 2-day rental, so we were able to return the bikes after a ride on Saturday and come back Sunday to do another ride. The bikesmith is a wonderful locally owned bike shop where gator estimates needs to be done for your bike I will send you a customized invoice and give you options as to what kind of services he thinks you need and what he recommend. They are pretty busy or at least when I took my bike there we are and it took about 5 days from a bike to come back it was a little more expensive than a commercial bike shop but I really appreciated the small bike shop feel and the fact that I could tell who worked on my bike and if I had a problem I felt confident that he would make things right. read more

Rented a nice carbon bike while visiting my parents for a long weekend. It was a bit pricy but pretty great discounts when you rent for enough days. Bike was in perfect repair. They put my pedals on and adjusted it so I fit well. They had a map they gave me and lots of patience to give me good routes to try. I was very happy with the service received at Bike Smith. I work for a bike company, and love a recreational ride whenever there's an opportunity. I come to Albuquerque once or twice a year for vacation, and it's really nice to have a reliable local shop where I can rent bike during my vacation - bumps up the fun factor in vacation by several for sure. I submitted an online reservation request, and within hours, they email me the availability of the specified bike. They were so nice to accommodate my request for bringing and installing my own pedals. Very helpful pointers on mountain biking trails was huge bonus to me as I'm not from ABQ area. Thank you! Fantastic Bike Rental place. I rented a Fuji 1.1 (Shimano 105) road bike for the weekend from BikeSmith. It was a great experience from start to end. They sent me up with road pedals specific for my shoes, did a rough fit on the bike, and made sure the rental helmet was properly tightened. The bike came with two water bottle cages, a road pump (which I used when the front went soft at the end of my second ride), two spare tubes, 2 CO2s (and chuck) and a basic multi-tool. The tubes on the bike were filled with sealant (which probably saved a flat and a tire change.) I took the bike around the river trail for a test ride, and then up to Sandia Crest (34x30 came in handy at elevation). All in all a great bike for a rental. read more

I came in from the east coast for Christmas week with family and rented a pre-arranged Fuji Roubaix Ultegra road bike, which they had waiting for me. The bike was clean with good treads and brakes and perfectly tuned, and BikeSmith set me up with compatible pedals, spare tube, CO2 and a pump, helmet, maps, and adjusted the seat height. I gave the bike a good workout over the week and it performed perfectly (bonus -- no flats!). 5 stars despite a mix-up on returning the rental bike (nobody there to open the shop at the arranged time), but they made good on their error it by hauling up to the Heights to pick up the bike on their own time. I expect to be back next time I'm in ABQ! read more

Can't say enough good about Ian and crew at the BikeSmith. I was driving across the Southwest from Chicago to California, hauling my 1980s Univega road bike on a trunk rack, and various things were slightly wrong with the bike when I wanted it to be in tip-top shape. Ian charged me a mere $18 to replace my chain, refusing to add any labor costs for two brake adjustments, and gave me several lock brackets for the OnGuard lock that I have for free. (Great lock, and a horribly designed bracket that breaks about every 3 months or so.) If you're passing through, or if you're an ABQ area cyclist, look no further for a great shop. read more

My husband and I were visiting our 3 year old grandson in Albuquerque and wanted to try the Bosque Trail. The folks at The Bike Smith set us up with a bike for my very tall husband, a comfy bike for me, and a carrier for our grandson. They took the time to insure the bikes and helmets were fitted well for all. They gave us maps and some tips and off we went. We rode to the Alameda crossing and had a picnic at the nice park on the river. These folks are ON IT! Brought my bike in for service and from the second they swung open the door for me to the moment I left they were top notch. Within 30 seconds of my arrival Ian had my bike up on the stand, and explained why I was dropping gears. He gave several options for parts, explaining the pricing for each, and didn't talk down to me despite it being obvious I know next to nothing about bike parts. The owners breezed through the shop on the way for a coffee run and asked not only their bike mechanics if they wanted anything, but asked me as well! Everyone at the shop was super friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. After a negative experience at the BC in Nob Hill, I am confident that my bike and I have found our "forever home" for bike service and repairs. Very pleased with this company! I came in to Albuquerque for a week long conference and decided to rent a bike rather than a car (as the city is very navigable on bike). The folks at The BikeSmith took care of me throughout the whole rental process. I inquired about renting a couple months beforehand and within a few hours Ross had replied to my request with all the necessary information. When I eventually rent the bike, I was very pleased with how well the bike road. At one point, I got a flat tire and hadn't changed on in some time so I brought it in. The folks at BikeSmith were again very helpful. They immediately changed the tire and went out of their way to suggest some riding routes - they are genuinely interested in ensuring you have a good bike experience in the city. Great shop. Took my bike in for a tune-up and they actually talked to me about what it needed. They also had a GREAT recommendation for a new cassette-which changed the gearing enough to give me the ability to spin more and to have a couple of NICE low settings for hill climbing. The prices were great (frankly I think they are underpricing themselves). Couldn't be happier! VERY pleased with these folks. Updating to add: Today I was out riding and the cable for my shifter went out. Managed to get the bike from the Bosque trail to the shop-and they fixed it for me in about 30 minutes (and I STILL think they aren't charging enough...it was under 12 bucks-I would have paid more for an immediate repair LOL) FINE place for bike maintenance AND repair. I was planning a weekend trip to Albuquerque to visit my sister and her family and since I was traveling with my Mom, I figured that I'll need a break at some point so I checked into where I could rent a road bike. The BikeSmith had great reviews on Yelp and I'll have to say I'm going to give them another GREAT review! The road bike I had planned to rent was a Fuji Roubaix with Shimano Ultegra components and when I went to pick it up it was just as advertised. The BikeSmith included a seatpack with two tubes, a CO2 tire levers, a patch kit, and a pump everything that you might need out on the road. I took them up on the offer for a helmet and pedals although I brought own just in case. Everything worked out great I got in two rides even though I only rented the bike for a day, the cycling in Albuquerque was great, weather cooperated and I had a great time exploring the new (for me) area. My Friday evening ride was up the four fingers off the Tramway in Eastern Albuquerque and the other ride was Saturday morning down the Tramway to Route 66 and down 216 up and over the mountains in the Cebolla State Park to highway 313 and back to Route 66 back to the start. Overall experience was great and I'd rent from them again the next time I'm in ABQ. Give them a try! read more
