First time visiting The Bitter Alibi for breakfast. We got there around 10:30am on a Sunday, no wait. Sat on the main floor. They have The Fix upstairs (cocktail bar) and a dining room downstairs, as well as a small patio out front. We got coffee and a bacon Bloody Mary. For breakfast we had The Cumberbatch and The Arnold. We ate it all! I would've given it 5 stars except for the fact we waited over 30-35 minutes for our food. Cute, local place. We definitely plan on going back. Next time, for dinner. read more

Fair warning: this place does not accept reservations so be prepared to wait for brunch. I had a party of two for brunch on a Sunday at 1pm. There was about a thirty minute wait. A wait with no real waiting area. The old goat is 6'4 so sitting downstairs was not an option. It's a cool vibe down there but a little tight. We sat outside on the patio Atmosphere: Like I said, the downstairs def has a pirate ship vibe... think tight, dark, but for some reason cool. The upstairs decor is... okay. They have a fun mural right when you walk in. And the patio is small. Keep in mind I would say this is more of a watering hole spot. Food: I got the Arnold for brunch with the Irish coffee. Food is a go.... id pass on the 10$ coffee. Nothing fancy or cute. The goat got the basic brunch. Two scrambled, eggs, chorizo sausage, Fruit, and a biscuit. The biscuits are great. The rest was okay. Service: I overheard it was the hostess first day. She was very nice and did all she could to give us a seat we wanted as quick as possible. The waitress was nice and attentive. Amazing hidden gem! We stopped here for brunch while hungry and struggling to find a place to eat. Great atmosphere. Extremely helpful and wonderful staff! Seated quickly and food came out quickly. They accommodated our two dogs and even brought them water. Food was amazing. We got the Cumberbatch and the Arnold. Both were amazing. Highlights were the Pablo chicken and the chorizo gravy. The Bitter Alibi is amazing. Great food, great drinks, games...what's not to love? My mom and stepdad are moving to Chattanooga, so I decided to show them around the MLK area. We picked the Bitter Alibi for lunch, because my mom is vegan and they had some options that worked for her while also having options that sounded interesting to me! My mom ordered the Toadstool burger (a portobello cap), and I ordered the Asian lettuce wraps with tofu (so that she could try it). I didn't try her portobello cap (but she said it was great), but I thought the lettuce wraps were great. Simple, spicy, delicious. We also tried the hummus as an appetizer, which was honestly the best hummus I've ever eaten. I didn't even know that hummus could be this good. Seriously. When I go back, I'll try something different for my entree (coffee crusted beef burger with bacon jam? slow corked pork Cuban sandwich? jerk-seasoned beef burger with pineapple pico?), but I'm getting that hummus again. My mom and stepdad don't really drink, but that didn't stop me. Great beer selection. I had things that I had never had before, which is always fun. Some TN beers, but lots of out-of-state selections as well. We ate downstairs in the bar area - where they had a big TV (playing the Harry Potter marathon on whatever station ABC Family became) and games (mostly missing pieces and cards, but we still had a good time playing gin rummy with a few missing cards!). Their hours are great - open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 2am on Friday and Saturday. The Bitter Alibi is just a cool place. I'll definitely be back! read more

The Bitter Alibi is a small bar and restaurant tucked away on Houston. We came for a Sunday brunch and there was luckily no wait in spite of it being a small venue. The inside is very funky and one of the defining features about this place. It is a bit dark inside and still cozy. We were seated downstairs, which you have to go down a narrow, spiral staircase to go down. I can't imagine being a server at Bitter Alibi, because going up and down these stairs all day would be a nightmare! We were seated at a hightop wooden table that was actually slightly uneven, and again..full of character. I looked up and there were a bunch of business cards tacked to the ceiling. Everywhere I turned there was just another thing that was unique and interesting. Our server was really nice and she gave us some recommendations on where to go hiking since we were asking her some questions. We started off with some mimosas, but they did have other brunch drinks as well. The menu has lots of items on the menu that are fusions with different cultures. I could have been happy with a number of different things but settled on the Seoul Train...a spicy pork hash with spinach and a soft boiled egg. I loved this dish but if I knew how much chile sauce would be on top I likely would've asked for it on the side. My companion got El burrito which was huge. I had a bite and it was very delicious. One of my favorite spots to date in Chattanooga--its certainly different but has the atmosphere, service, great food and good prices to deserve a 5 star rating. read more

I very rarely write reviews, but this place was so abysmal in every way, I had to put this out there. Believe me, rating it with one star is being generous! We were a party of 6 (3 couples) on a Sunday late morning/early afternoon. So, we all crept down a VERY narrow spiral staircase to find ourselves in this dank basement. Again, VERY tight quarters. Order at the bar. Now...here come the part that was truly, gobsmackingly unbelievable and unforgiveable. So, about 15 min. or so in, the first couple gets their food. Another 15 min go by, the second couple gets served. And there's me and my hubby STILL waiting. Another 10 goes by, hubby gets up and asks where our orders were. Waitress: "Oh. I'll go check". Gee, THAT would be nice! By this time, nearly everyone else we were with had finished eating. We're still waiting. FINALLY, almost an hour after ordering, our food comes. So, so NOT worth the wait. I had the ala cart 1 egg, biscuit, and fruit cup. Egg was at best, mediocre. Biscuit was dry and crumbly with nothing offered to top it with. Fruit cup was a few bits of watermelon. To sum up, unless you really enjoy waiting an interminable time for mediocre food, skip this place. Go ONLY if you really love those spots that consider themselves oh, so hip, cutesy and cool, if that's your vibe. Personally, I would not return if I was paid to! read more

I ordered takeout from the Bitter Alibi, I called in my order and got two Cluck if you bucks, half an order of wonton nachos, and a side of sweet potato fries. They said it would be 20 minutes until it's ready. I got there 30 minutes after calling and one of my chicken sandwiches was missing. They said they would get me another one so I had to wait an extra 20 minutes for the other sandwich. Whenever I got home, I looked at my food and one of my chicken sandwiches was plain. It is supposed to come with lettuce, tomato, and pickles. Both of the chicken filets were burnt to death and tough as leather. This experience as a whole was awful and unacceptable by the kitchen staff to serve food that is un edible. I have been to Bitter Alibi many times and have never had a problem this bad. read more

I loved the name of this place when I googled bars nearby so we decided to stop. The little basement area was super adorable and very reminiscent of a few bars I loved when I visited Savannah. Dingy but clean and with personality. Our bartender guy was very funny and friendly. Had our drinks out fast, made me laugh even though we were pretty sad, and was cute which is a plus. We live down the street so wanted to love this place, they have upscale bar food, mostly fried, so if you want something decadent while also being hipster and junky (nutrition wise) this is the spot. Their vegan nachos that are made on wontons are addicting, I just can't eat that amount of fat. If you're looking for something fried and fab, give these guys a chance. We wanted to love this place, but we all felt unsatisfied when we left. We went here while my mom was visiting. Our server seemed slightly aloof; although very nice and did help us with out dishes. First thing is they asked if we wanted still/sparkling water. My mom ordered sparkling and all others got still. The server refilled her half glass of sparkling with still and then kept doing it. The three is us all ordered one alcoholic beverage. We ordered the whipped goat cheese. That was alright, slight lack of flavor. My husband ordered the burger. He said it was okay, but not worth the money. The fries that came with were inedible. My mom and I ordered the salmon to share. It came out completely black and burnt (it says it's sautéed on the menu). I tried a bite, but all I tasted was burnt. Our server took it back and we ordered the lemon chicken instead. It was bland and dry. The server asked if thE dish was better and I said it was okay. He ended up taking the entree off our bill, which he did not have to do. We also ordered the potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and root vegetables. The potatoes had great flavor and were the best thing we had. Brussels sprouts and vegetable were just okay. For the price, I would pass on this place. Our bill was over $150 with only 1 entree on the bill. 2 stars for our server helping us with the replacement dishes and the ambiance is really cool. I highly recommend this place. With its fun eclectic vibe, and cool set up, why would you not come here. Oh and did i mention the food is phenomenal. I love that they have an upstairs and downstairs and the spiral staircase is a great touch. The restaurant itself isn't huge, but it's condensed just right. I love coming here to study in the summers on a weekday when they first open. They aren't that busy And there are several high tops on the bottom floor to study at. As far as the food, their dumplings were good but weren't my favorite, but the spicy chicken and rice bowl with broccoli was phenomenal. I could eat that everyday!
