Maybe Monday night is just an off night for this restaurant. We went based on a hotel recommendation not knowing about the award. Seating was easy without a reservation. The servers took a long time to come over such that we had to flag someone down. The beet salad was terrific for the person who had it. The wrong salad came out for the other person and had to be sent back. The ordered wine came late but the house red is quite good. For those of us who had the meatballs, they were terrific. The brownie dessert was also quite good. But the recommended pork chop was overcooked to the point of being chewy. The sauce around it was terrific. And for the decaf after dinner, they never brought it and eventually said they were out of decaf. So, maybe Monday is an off night. read more

Seeking an upscale but non-pretentious venue for a graduation celebration, we were satisfied with our overall experience at Black Cypress. The ambiance was sleek yet inviting, and the menu reflected a modern take on Mediterranean favorites such as souvlaki and pasta. Everything we ordered was light, refreshing, and thoughtfully presented. I ordered the dolmas appetizer to share, along with the beet salad and pork souvlaki. The dolmas were delicious and came with a side of tzatziki dip. The beet salad was unique in that the beet really is the star of the show - radish, parsley, pistachios, and blue cheese are interspersed among large chunks of beet. While I had been expecting more of a "traditional" salad, I thoroughly enjoyed the contrasting textures of the crunchy radishes and pistachios against the creamy blue cheese. The pork souvlaki was flavorful and satisfying, and the dish was served with pita wedges for scooping up the delicious tzatziki. Our server also brought out complimentary buttery Parker house rolls, which were appreciated by the guests who ordered pasta. After toasting our grad, we enjoyed some crisp brüt while lingering over the food. While I would have liked to see more seafood and veggie-centric dishes - besides salads and the grilled portobello - everything we ordered was delicious. We had a wonderful dinner at The Black Cypress. The service was amazing. Kevin was our server - excellent. The staff's attention to every detail was perfect. I started with cauliflower and broccoli soup followed by the lamb chops. I am not sure what was in the soup but I would love to have the recipe. The lamb portion was huge. I asked for medium rare and got more medium but no complaints. The seasoning was perfect and I gnawed on the bones. We shared the bread pudding with huckleberry ice cream. Made a reservation almost a month in advance yet the day of, they left me a message telling me that they over booked the day and needed to move back my reservation. I called them back a little later as I was working at the time and they said they fixed it by splitting up a table. When we got there the table we had was almost too small for appetizers and felt jammed into the corner. On top of this, the service felt slow due to the amount of times that our and other servers were attentively caring to other patrons, yet seems to forget about us. This was disappointing as every other time I have went I enjoyed it throughly, and considered the price point acceptable for the services provided. Based on my experience today I can say that the prices now are not remotely justified and would recommend getting dinner somewhere else regardless of your budget. read more

Black Cypress has incredible food and a lovely ambiance. You will pay a small premium over other Pullman spots, but it is well worth it for the experience and the incredible food. We had the Cypriot cheese sandwiches, which themselves are good, but the herb slaw that they were served with made them truly delicious. We then had two bowls of pasta, one of the carbonara and one of the pomodoro. I refuse to try anything else on the BC menu just because the carbonara is too perfect to pass up!!! The huge chunks of bacon live in my dreams. The pomodoro also received rave reviews! Finally, we split a carafe of the house white, which is well priced for two genuinely good glasses of wine. The drinks here are really special and unique as well. Once we save up a bit more money we will have to come here again. We decided to enjoy a nice dinner while in town for a game, and Black Cypress did not disappoint. We showed up a bit early for our reservation but were still seated right away. Our server was helpful and clearly explained all the specials. The food runners and bussers were very friendly too. We started with a cocktail and a glass of wine - the cocktail was great! A perfect balance of sweet and sour, with lemon and strawberry. We split a small Caesar salad that comes with chunks of bacon akin to pork belly. My husband enjoyed the carbonara, with the same bacon, and I had the pasta special of puttanesca. The pastas could have arrived hotter, but were very flavorful. Entrees came with bread rolls as well. The space is a little cramped - we were at a 2-top near the bar and in a high traffic area, but we still enjoyed our evening. read more

For my grandma's 85th birthday, my partner and I celebrated with a dinner out at The Black Cypress. I have had their Bread Pudding dessert many times while at Etsi Bravo, but had yet gone to the restaurant. I was excited to finally go. I ordered the Ribeye for dinner. It was cooked nicely rare and juicy. A tad fatty, but still okay. The broccolini was delicious. The mashed potatoes were perfect. Wonderfully buttery and smooth. I was in love! My partner's Seasonal Pasta, which I could not catch the name of because of the noise of the restaurant and the relative quietness of our server, was delicious as well. He added meatballs to the dish and they were amazing. We both loved his pasta. I am glad he shared some bites! Not pictured is an order of bread we had. So good! The bread was buttery and warm. There was no need for extra butter (though my partner said he would have preferred that). The bread also had a sprinkle of salt on top, which was tasty. I finished the night with my usual Bread Pudding dessert. It was as wonderful as always. The dish is consistent and never less than stellar. The huckleberry ice cream is a delight. The bread pudding is warm and soft. Not sure about the pairing, but it works. I am in love with it. The one downside (not accessibility-related) was part of the service. It was a busy night as it was the night before Fall Graduation, so that is likely the or part of the reason. It did not ruin the experience or make me not want to return. Accessibility: This place is somewhat accessible. It is very tight quarters throughout the restaurant. The entrance is especially tight. All seating is table and chairs. However, some chairs are wooden folding chairs often found at weddings. There are also some benches along the wall. The lighting is dark and can be an issue, especially when trying to look at the menu. The noise because of the crowd was an issue at times. The washrooms are accessible! They have grab bars and are large. There are only two, so there may be a line, but they are gender neutral. read more

Sometimes I wish yelp would break ratings down into categories, like service and food. For food, I'd give a 5, everything was great, cocktails were good, the dinner rolls were excellent. Service, I've had more attentive servers at Denny's. The restaurant was busy, but still had empty tables. I saw multiple servers working, so not a case of too many tables per server. It took close to 10 minutes before a server appeared, who said water was on the way, but that only appeared a minute before my cocktail. Server took our order, and we never saw him again until the bill was presented. No refresh on the water, no inquiry on new drinks, never brought the coke that was ordered. For the premium prices , the food should be good, AND the service should make you want to come back. I might try again, hopefully we just got a sub par server. read more

Food is great. Would go back if entertaining guests but we can make food just as good at home. Lots of props to Black Cyprus for their steak. You can get a better steak here than at any of the local steak houses. Go figure! We ordered several courses so we could try a bit of everything. The carbonara was not like a real carbonara with eggs yolks, it had a creme base like an Alfredo. My 13 year old was disappointed because she knew the difference. I also had to go home and later that week make bread pudding so that the family would know what real bread pudding is like. The family said mine was better. Cold bread pudding? I still can't get over it. When I go out and pay top dollar I expect dishes better than what I can make or something I'm not willing to make. The hostess and the server were both incredibly kind. A person who I assume is a runner or server support person, was also super genuine. I was taken care of, food arrived in a timely manner, it was all good!! The only thing I'm concerned about that knocks a star, is the server did not ID me for my drink. I asked them why and it caught them off guard. I made a joke about being on "Undercover Boss" and they thought I was serious at first. Hopefully that helped them understand that you don't know who is ordering and how you can get in trouble. read more

The restaurant ambiance was cozy, service was friendly, choices for everyone were pretty good. I had the portobello with broccolini, truffle mashed potatoes, i was pretty excited about it, but i was a bit disappointed, the portobello mushrooms was just warm on the outside and cold inside, mashed potatoes were just warm broccolini was cooked perfectly but also just warm. The brioche bread was nice and hot. My friend had soup and it was just warm. Pasta carbonara was more like a fettuccine Alfredo, no egg. I don't know if dishes sat for a while before server brought it to us, we didn't say anything at the time, it was a 7 pm dinner reservation and we didn't get our food till 7:45. Again restaurant is cozy, service was friendly. Food just needs to be hot and cooked through. With that being said i definitely would give it another try next time i visit. read more

After several visits to The Black Cypress, I can truly say it is one of the best places to eat in Pullman, if not the singular best. I have been with several different groups and everyone has been pleased with their experiences. Definitely take up the offer of free dinner rolls, they are excellent. I would also highly recommend the clams, and they will occasionally have a great steak special. But to be quite honest, you can't go wrong with anything. A Thursday night at 6 PM with reservations. Anyone say James Beard Award? Sat at a two-top that should be labeled as a four-top as the tables were THAT close. (Other tables were spaced nicely.) Sound was good, the floor was interesting. Had fancy Shirley Temple with fancy cherries (yes to the Temple; no to the cherries.) - had a couple Temples...very good. Hubby had a (strawberry? or raspberry?) Negroni he liked very much. Tiny fancy cheese sandwiches for app - the mint was def a twist. Vichyssoise for soup YES! - (warm, not cold). Ceasar for salad - oh my, the house bacon! Carbonara with that awesome house bacon too! Roasted chicken VERY SALT FORWARD. EW. Rolls came with the meal - would have gone well with the Vichyssoise mop up. Huckleberry ice cream for dessert. (Darned tasty ice cream.) I've said, "Why does Moscow have all of the nice, fancy restaurants?" (ex: Sangria, Maialina, Nectar, Lodgepole). I knew Black Cypress was just down the road from us but never had the opportunity to dine there until New Year's Eve 2015. I was greatly impressed! I made reservations for me and my boyfriend so there was no wait for us, though we didn't see anyone waiting at the door either. We were greeted and seated right away. The decor is rustic and homey, but still classy. The chandeliers are a beautiful, romantic touch, especially at dinner time. Specials are written on a chalkboard on the wall, as with most hip restaurants in this area. I wish I had my glasses because I didn't see what the daily bread was until after and it had all of my favorite things on it/was akin to a lox bagel! I ordered a house salad and the roasted chicken, I believe. I only ordered the salad because I was feeling dizzy due to some health issues/needed to eat right away but the salad was surprisingly delicious. It kind of reminded me of the spinach/candied hazelnut/goat cheese salad at Maialina because of the vinaigrette dressing and candied nuts but that's not a bad thing, in my opinion. It also had some thick cut meat (bacon, probably?), which I found delicious, even though I usually don't care for meat. I ordered a half salad so it wasn't too filling. The chicken came out in a decent amount of time. I'm not a big meat-eater at all but man...as soon as I stuck my fork into it (with the intention of cutting it with my knife), I KNEW it was gonna be good. It was sooo tender and cooked perfectly. The skin was crisp, but not oily, and had the right amount of seasoning to it. I didn't care for the kale (I think?) that was under it but the bread pieces were an interesting/unique touch from the typical potato or rice starch. My boyfriend had the spaghetti carbonara. I had a bite and it was also perfect. The sauce wasn't too light or too heavy and the noodles were cooked to perfection. My boyfriend said that he wished the meat (I think it was bacon, again) was less rich but I thought it tasted great. They also served us some little bread rolls with sea salt along with our main dishes. I could eat those all day, and I'm kinda glad that they didn't bring it out before our meals...I wouldn't have had any room for my delicious chicken! We ordered some coffee after our meal because we're old fuddie duddies that need help staying awake until midnight for NYE. The coffee was a bit lukewarm but I kinda liked that, despite the freezing 9 degree weather outside. I tend to be impatient and burn my tongue on scorching hot coffee and we were kinda of in a rush to get to Etsi Bravo next door anyway (which ended up being for nothing since they were over-crowded and weren't letting people in...we ended up grabbing some sub-par/last pick seating at Rico's instead). Service here was friendly and timely, despite the NYE rush and also attentive but not too in-your-face. The only downer was that there was a table of around 20 rowdy college kids in the same room as us, so that kind of ruined the atmosphere for myself and visibly other older people in the room (we are in our mid-20s but everyone else besides that group were middle-aged) but this is Pullman, it's a college town, and everyone is young once so I can't complain. This is our favorite restaurant on the Palouse. The cocktails are always spot-on, the atmosphere is warm and friendly, and the service is top-notch. The rib eye is bar-none my favorite (although I'm really hoping they will bring back the original cut they used to serve a couple of years ago). They really know how to choose and cook the perfect cut of meat, and you can't go wrong with any of them. The salted rolls are a treat and I love every single appetizer on the menu, but the cheese sandwiches are my favorite- or the pork skewers?? They are all good. But really, for me, it always comes down to the service. And these guys knock it out of the park. Decided to come here after reading through reviews of local restaurants here in Pullman. I came at about 630 & parking was a bit difficult but I was able to find a spot around the block. I started off with the white peach cider they had on tap which was really good. The BC Caesar was the first thing I tried, to which I came across their amazing house made bacon. My salad was probably my favorite thing I tried from here. I saw other tables receiving complimentary bread so I requested some as well. The bread roll was warm & delightful, finished with salt & butter. I went for the roasted chicken for my entrée & substituted the bread salad for mashed potatoes. The chicken was just okay, & there was not much mashed potatoes, only the roasted kale soaked in the fresh herb sauce was abundant. The scenery was nice but I'll give my meal a 7.5. I probably won't return because I am only visiting for the week but if I did I would try the lamb chops, they looked pretty good when I seen them being brought out for someone else. read more

Went here for our anniversary. Service was amazing, decor was very cool. Down side was the food :( Presentation was very nice but EVERYTHING needed seasoning and salt. Very very bland. We got the CYPRIOT CHEESE SANDWICHES... pretty good nothing to write home about. BEET SALAD was alright. The soup of the day was a Gazpacho, I think tomato. That was probably my favorite dish of the whole night. Then we had the RIB-EYE with asparagus and mashed potatoes which would have been spectacular if they just added SALT or seasoned it. It was cooked perfectly medium rare. The CARBONARA was good except for the lack of seasoning and it seemed to get very dry after about 5 minutes. Bread was a nice touch but they didn't accompany it with butter which seemed kind of odd. Wanted to LOVE this place and we might give it a try again.
