Then the waitress comes back with deep fried hush puppies and a bucket of blue crabs. She dumps the crabs out before you as if to emphasize that their lives had no meaning and neither does yours. Now it is just you, the blue crabs, and your black soul. Your utensils are a hammer and a paring knife, the blunt and the cruel. The ritual of dismemberment comes to be a microcosm of life itself. The thudding trauma of the hammer on crab is the overwhelming first blow of birth itself. The knife is every day afterward slowly picking at you until you are nothing but a shell. Halfway through the first crab, the waitress brings you a fried chicken leg and drum stick. No creature of the land, sea, or air is safe from man's unflinching death march. You crack open the first crab and eat its brains. You gain its knowledge and realize that you and the crab are one in the same. They wear their shells on the outside, but we wear ours on the inside to shield ourselves from the harshness of this world. You gain a sort of respect for your enemy. This crab feast has taught you how fragile both shells are. By the second crab, this respect has quickly given way to hate. The work being put into shelling and consuming does not reap satisfying rewards no matter how salty or sweet. The returns diminish with each hammer fall, and each dip of the crab's death into hot butter. Graceland by Paul Simon plays on the radio and you realize that there is no grace left for you. You have entered this hell and you cannot leave until you meet the devil face to face. Will his eyes look like the crab's or your own? You realize you are the only customer in this restaurant, dancing your dance of death, and that perhaps eating an endless supply of crustaceans by yourself is the highest form of loneliness. But loneliness is the natural order of things. You soldier on. As the crabs get cold so too does your temper. You are no longer man nor god nor beast, but a machine, coldly going through your functions. Cracking, stabbing, and eating without a trace of feeling. At some point on the fourth or fifth crab, at this point the numbers mean nothing, you realize that you are bleeding. Has the crab enacted a small vengeance from beyond the veil or have you lost the ability to discriminate that which your knife slices? Finally, the waitress comes to you and asks if you would like any more crabs. The salesman in her wants you to say yes, but you look into her eyes and the human being in her begs you to say no. A rainy Saturday at Rehoboth Beach is never ideal, but the perfect recipe to this is reading with a cat cuddled up on your lap and AYCE crabs at Blue Crab. AYCE crabs is about $40/person, and it comes with Delaware fried chicken, hush puppies, and corn on the cob. They bring about a dozen out at a time, and the crabs are all steamed and doused with Old Bay. If you can't commit to AYCE, 1/2 a dozen crabs was about $25. I actually ordered this because I just had a crab cake salad prior and I'm also a very slow crab eater, so I didn't think that I was going to be able to get my money's worth for the AYCE option. Although it's obvious that there was no sharing for the AYCE option, I stole a few bites of the hush puppies and a crab after I was done with my 6. I opted for the Tuna Steak special and a bowl of the Md Crab soup. It didn't suck. At $8/bowl, the soup is pricey, but on a damp chilly night, it succeeded in warming the sub-cockles of my heart, the same way I'd imagine reading news of Dick Cheney declaring bankruptcy would. The Tuna was yummy, about 1 inch thick, cooked to medium. After having an bad piece of rare tuna institute a 4-day weight loss regamin (want to lose 12 pounds in 4 days? try it!), I want a fish cooked medium or better unless it is sashimi grade. Finally, the staff was as pleasurable as the food. Romanian born Ramona was attentive as well as entertaining. As a family run business, staffing can be difficult, but they found a jewel. It was really good and tastes cleaner than a chain like Popeye's, but nothing to rave about for me. Hush puppies were dry, but tasty nontheless. The favorite item there was the crab soup. I saw in the bathroom that it was award-winning, and rightly so. It's the right blend of tomatoes, vegetables and crab. I would have ordered another one of these if I wasn't feasting on the $36 special. Onto the crabs. Crabs were fresh and had a lot of meat. We tossed a few that were oddly blackened or green, but most were large and tasty; I'll blame it on it being off-season. I found there to be way too much salt, but had a right amount of old bay. You can request butter and vinegar for dipping. Corn was smaller in size and not was crisp/fresh. Is it the best crab feast I've tasted? No. Did they offer something unique? Yes. My friend and I, who are both huge crab lovers found this place during off season when most crab houses in the beach area are closed. Our reservation was for 4:00 pm for All U Can Eat crabs. We were seated promptly at 4 pm. by a waitress who was friendly and polite with a sparkling nature. She took our orders promptly and by 4:30 pm we were knee deep in crabs that were big, meaty and seasoned well. The corn on the cob which was included in this meal was served hot, sweet and delicious! The fried chicken and hush puppies were very good as well. The owner of the establishment served us a well and his attentiveness was appreciated. We made a few special requests which were honored right away with a smile. I was really impressed with the cleanliness of this restaurant and observed how each area was thoroughly cleaned after diners left. The bathroom was extremely clean as well....there weren't even water stains or streaks on the mirror I was totally impressed by this restaurant and look forward to many more visits over this coming summer. Took our 3 kids there yesterday (a Thursday) for an early dinner, and had a great time. Zero wait at 5:15, but the place was filled by 6, so get there early, because the tables turn over slow when it's all-you-can-eat of crabs. Atmosphere is nothing impressive - looked like an old Italian pizza joint painted over in blue and white. Noise level was perfect for our loud kids... Mostly families there. We did the all-you-can-eat specials: wife and I had the crab and shrimp, and we ordered the kids 2 crab, and 1 shrimp. They brought out the buckets of husk-on corn and baskets of fried chicken and hush puppies first - all VERY good, so had to pace the kids to hold room for the crabs! I also ordered the Blue Hawaiian cocktail, and Blueberry Mojito - both were excellent. We watched a video on YouTube of how to open and eat the crabs, and then went to town on them - all delicious. Kids loved making a big mess on the table. Service was decent, with a full compliment of Eastern European students who struggled a bit with English, but our waitress was really nice, and they're well-staffed so no problem in finding others to help out, too. Reasonably priced, it was $37 for all you can eat mediums, shrimp, corn on the cob, hush puppies (that were more like funnel cake), and by far the best fried chicken I have ever had. I'm sure prices vary based on season and availability. I would suggest that anyone in OC or Rehobeth takes the 20 minute drive and check this place out. I came here over a rainy weekend in August with my mom, her boyfriend, and my Aunt and Uncle, feening for some steamed blue crabs. We were just hoping we could get decent sized crabs at a decent price. We could have walked from where we were staying if it weren't raining, since the Blue Crab is right in the small downtown area of Bethany. Come prepared to pay for parking anywhere at the Delaware beaches, but if you can walk from where you stayed, you'll do better. Our waitress was clearly an out of towner (Olga), but she was pleasant and attentive. She got us drinks, and the Evo beer was pretty good. We decided that most of us were going to get the Blue Crab Feast or the Blue Crab and Shrimp Feast, which came with all you can eat crabs, corn on the cob, fried chicken, and hush puppies, and shrimp if you ordered that meal. It's $32 for just the crabs, $35 ish with the shrimp. They had some other combos and you could get just shrimp as well. An interesting fact was that they apparently served American shrimp- most of the shrimp you see in restarants is from overseas. So for those of you who support local sourcing, this place works well, since blue crabs are definitely from the Chesapeake bay. The fried chicken was good, mine was too hot really to eat and when I did dig in, it wasn't seasoned very much. The crabs were good, and the size was decent. Size can't really be blamed on the restarants, anyway, since the haul of the day just depends on what the Bay produces. The hush puppies were definitely good, and I've been living in Southeast Virginia for a few years, where we have the big balls that you need to cut open--I like the Delaware style oblong nuggets better. Much easier to pop in two bites. They put powdered sugar on them, which was new to me, but I liked it. The corn seemed fresh and was served in the husk. I think they have everything on warmers in the back for the all you can eat because when we asked for more it came out awfully fast...but that's fine, it still tasted pretty darn good. The atmosphere was family friendly and they had some games playing on the TV, although I couldn't see from where I was sitting. Unfortunately, I went with people who average about 6 crabs each.. so 4 people shared 2 dozen crabs. The crabs had a good amount of meat in them and were all medium size. Knocking a star off for service. Although the staff was very friendly, we had to ask our server multiple times for water and we didn't actually get our water until 30 minutes after we were seated. We also only saw our server at the beginning and end of our meal, and not at all during. That being said, I think this is a solid crab house that is conveniently located not far from Bethany Beach.
