The crust appears to be purchased with no flavor and very tough, the pie filling tasted like coconut extract with a chemical hint to it. The pie crust for both quiche and pie tasted alike. If you are looking for a nice day trip from St Louis - this is perfect. Quaint little shops and make a reservation at the Blue Owl and have a little lunch - but save room for dessert. The Blue Owl is an old home converted to a restaurant. They have a nice menu item that allows you to mix and match 3 items so you can try a few menu items out. The carrots weren't available online, so I ordered them when I picked up my order. I purchased the country fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, carrots (which I paid $5.32 for), strawberry salad and a slice of chocolate passion cake. What was good: the strawberry salad, country fried steak (tender), mashed potatoes, green beans (had lots of meat in them) and the apple butter was delicious. The cake was good but thinly sliced, not worth $8.29. The carrots were unevenly cooked, some were soft, most were hard. I won't take the chance and order them again. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for years, so we took a day trip down to Kimmswick. Unfortunately, the whole experience with a disappointment, except for a waitress who is wonderful! My husband ordered a French dip with fries, and added cheese to it. His meal alone was over $24!! The food was just average, but I was shocked at the price. I ordered a chicken salad croissant, and sadly, the chicken salad was extremely sweet. It had sweet pickles, and also must've had added sugar. The croissant it was served on was very dry. I did not want a side with my sandwich, but I was still charged $16 for the chicken salad sandwich. Our total bill came to $55 after a tip, For two sandwiches fries and one drink. The meal was extremely overpriced. What a disappointment. We didn't even order dessert! Sadly, we will not be back. read more

My wife had a lamp to pickup at a furniture store in Festus, so we decided to make an outing of it by stopping at the Blue Owl in Kimswick. Despite living in STL for over 30 years and having visited Kimswick many times for their various "festivals", we'd never eaten at the Blue Owl, since the place is usually packed. This morning was no different, but to our great surprise, they got us a table for 2 right away. We were seated just after 11 am, which was unfortunately too late for their breakfast menu, so lunch it was! We started with 2 cups of freshly brewed coffee . My lunch selection was a slice of their homemade chicken pot pie, freshly made crust and large bites of chicken inside, topped with a cheese covered crust. It was fresh & delicious! For a side I had a large serving of curly fries, doubt they were made in house, but they were good! My wife eats largely plant based, and ordered a quiche... she may not have read the description of it closely, but as she took her first bite, she discovered it had bacon on it. Rather than send it back, she chose to eat around the bacon. I took a couple of bites and thought it was pretty tasty as well. She had a fresh fruit cup as her side, and it was just that: fresh fruit. The Blue Owl is known for their fresh bakery and after perusing their cake/pie menu, we decided on a lightly frosted carrot cake, but at a $52 price point, we thought it was pretty pricey and instead opted for 2 take-home slices ($7 each slice) to savor later today. Maybe it's holiday pricing, or maybe carrots have been subjected to the tariffs, but $52 for a store bought ( no matter how fresh) cake seemed a bit high. All in all, a delightful experience. Last minute decision to take family to their main location for a meal as we have not all been together. Offered immediate seating on porch, but we decided to wait for an interior table. Lots of groups came during our wait. It's always been like that here. Very popular. We each got something totally different, & all were more than satisfied. Filling. Yummy. Staff was incredible from check-in till we left. Waitress was beyond gifted/talented. One of my family members noticed a unique wall honoring what appeared to be staff in the area where we waited, & suggested I read what was under each photo. My wife and I have been regular customers at the Blue Owl for decades, and we have always been pleased with the experience until today. We went there for lunch with friends, and we were very disappointed. Our first clue was when we walked into the restaurant, and the waiting area was empty at 11:00. The waiting area is usually standing room only by that time on Sunday. Our reservations were for 11:15, but the hostess was able to seat us early, and that was very nice. The quality of the food, however, was not so nice. One of our friends and I both ordered one of the daily specials, chicken and dumplings. You would think that this meal would have to be special in order to be featured, but it was not. The chicken was so tough that it was inedible. I fished out most of the dumplings and ate those, but left a bowl full of chicken. To be fair, the dumplings and the broth were nicely seasoned and delicious, but the main ingredient -- the chicken -- was awful. My wife had the gluten-free French toast and said that it was disappointing. She also remarked that $12 was a lot to pay for two slices of bread. Our other friend had the Reuben sandwich and the Blue Owl's signature white chili. She complained that the bread in the Reuben was not grilled, and it was messy to eat. She also said that the white chili was not as good as it used to be, and that her "Terrific Trio" was not worth the $22.50 she paid. Our server was polite and attentive enough but had to be reminded to bring the third part (dessert) of our friend's "Terrific Trio". We had invited this couple to go to lunch with us, and the experience was a little embarrassing. My wife & I had the Tropical Chicken Salads. The salad is a mountain of iceberg lettuce with tiny chunks of chicken which might be a half cup. I don't think we saw much of any Romaine lettuce. For the price this is over priced. The amount of fruit was minimal for the price of the salad. read more

Annual fall trip to Kimmswick always includes lunch at The Blue Owl. It was a beautiful warm November day so we elected to sit in the veranda. Our server was very friendly and took good care of us. My wife enjoyed her quiche, salad and dessert trio and I had the Wednesday special. It was three large pieces of fried chicken (breast, thigh and leg), mashed potatoes, green beans and a biscuit all for just $19! More like dinner than lunch for sure. We couldn't leave without getting pies but we had to take them home as we were too full to enjoy them there. The apple crumb and pecan pies were excellent as late night snacks. The quiche Lorraine - standard, good execution, good for breakfast, not for recommendations 4. The chicken salad pie - insane. Couldn't stop eating it. A must try. Like the chicken pie covered with cheese, I too was smothered with deliciousness and had to stop to come up for error. And for the finale, the pies. 1. The coconut cream pie: delicious, yes, award winning no. Overshadowed by the famous levee pie 2. The mile high levee apple pie: it's on Oprah's favorite things... rightfully so. The quiche was pretty standard, but the unexpected champion of the meal was the baked chicken salad. Who knew you could make a savory pie with chicken salad? The place is famous for the levee apple pie, and I can see why now! The mix of crust, caramel, cinnamon, and apple sang together. Pro tip- order a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it really set off the flavor profiles. There was a long wait, as expected, but they text you when your table is ready. Parking was a little crazy on a Saturday but we were able to find a spot in the nice large lot across the street. It was a warmer day but we sat outside. They have a great deck/patio with fans. Our server was prompt and attentive. The menu had plenty of great options but wanted to save room for dessert so went with the egg salad sandwich. It was tasty! It was served with a side of chips and they easily swapped soup for cottage cheese. The dessert menu was equally hard to choose from with so many tasty options. I went with the apple crumb pie. One of the worst meals I've ever had. We ordered 2 Sunday specials-the roast beef and chicken & dumplings. Both were swimming in flavorless gravy that I'd equate to institutional food. The roast beef was served with what tasted like instant mashed potatoes that were brownish in color. The chicken & dumplings, too, tasted like something from a can. I've had better meals from the frozen food section of my local grocery store. They did get 1 star for a good strawberry salad and dinner rolls. And while the green beans were the best part of the entree, they were very salty. To top it off, the service was borderline rude. One nice waitress took our drink order and gave us time to look over the menu, so I was a little confused when a different waitress took over. While attentive, she never cracked a smile or acknowledged the many "thank you"s we gave. Really underwhelmed. One of my family members did a Goldbelly for the instagram worthy Levee Apple Pie. I will note that this person is a really really good pastry Chef. The pie was just not good even when everything was followed to the letter. Soggy filling. Adding the topping was harder than a peanut brittle and not a pleasant eating experience. Not the same under the new ownership. Our apple pie was dry and about half the size it used to be. The prices are ridiculous for the serving size on all of the desserts. I wasn't overly impressed with my lunch either, the soup tasted like it had been reheated. The only thing we enjoyed here was our waitress. I have been wanting to try this place for years now! We came here on a Sunday for fried chicken. At the time we got there, I was able to get fried chicken while my husband got breakfast food. Best if both worlds! The fried chicken was fresh, juicy and flavorful. Husband loved his biscuits and gravy. Of course we left with some cookies and cheesecake from the bakery! Next time I'm coming for the apple pie! We did call ahead the day before and make reservations. I highly recommend that. The place gets very busy. It's also nice to walk around downtown Kimmswick as well while you're there!!! Every June, the town of Kimmswick closes down the first weekend to host the annual strawberry festival.
