We are from another area, but had business in Richmond today, so as we've done a number of times, we decided to go up a day early specifically to eat at the Boathouse. We made a reservation at the Boathouse via Open Table. I was really surprised to find that any available outdoor seating is now carrying a $5 charge per person TO SIT OUTSIDE!!! We'd miss the view, but NO WAY were we going to PAY $10 to sit outside in the heat. So we got there, and went inside, got to the hostess stand and it said to see the outside hostess. OK, well, this was a small thing, but why not put that sign outside instead of us walking in and having to walk right back out? We were seated at a table in the back and a nice young man gave us a long spiel on ordering by QR code and he said things like, 1 order per table, place your request in the order you want your food to open a tab and keep ordering.... just an unbelievable way to order. I told him I wanted to be able to see the menu and he said, "you can do that, just use a fake name". So that's what I did. However, it was on my phone, we were in the back in a dark area, and even with my reading glasses, I was having difficulty reading the tiny print on my phone. We are both tech savvy and have used online ordering systems during the pandemic. I don't know if I messed up the order ing with the fake name, but my husband was unable to put our drinks and appetizer in and pay for it. He kept getting a message saying "you aren't a part of this table". He had to go up to the bar to get the young man's attention (I don't even think you can call him a server) and he said something to the effect of "I don't know what you want me to do". He did help my husband with putting in a new name and he brought an iPad over (which didn't help). I asked for a paper menu because I couldn't read my phone and he said they didn't have any, that the only way to order was on our phones. He offered no other assistance and I asked him if we couldn't order on our phones, how were we supposed to order our meal? No other ideas, no offer to get the manager. We'd already been there over 30 minutes trying to get an initial order in and we were both so mad, we just got up and left. As soon as I got in the car, I called them back and asked for the manager. She apologized, and said she could have helped. Maybe so, but we wanted nothing to do with any of it any longer. Even the manager didn't say how she could have helped, just apologized. I asked for the owner's contact information, and I will be emailing him a copy of this review. I thought of all kinds of scenarios where this would become an issue- seniors older than us without phones, people paying cash, large groups and people just not tech savvy. It is a horrible way to do business!! No real interaction with any of the staff; it's very impersonable. And to have to leave a forced 20% service charge/tip for nothing but runners, absolutely not. We almost always tip 20% and more anyway, but don't tell me I have to pay it unless I'm in a large group. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK. read more

Overpriced. Service isn't good. I ordered an item from the appetizer menu as my dinner. We did not order any appetizers. The server acknowledged how the items were ordered. My dinner came out as an appetizer long before my other two companions were served their dinners. The server offered to take it back to keep warm until their dinners came out. I had ordered mussels -- overcooked mussels are not good. So I said I would just go ahead and eat. Then I asked for silverware as there were none on the table. For the price of the food they need to get the service right. This was a birthday dinner for our daughter. The experience was not good. read more

First visit back since Covid tonight. Boy what a disappointment! Beautiful warm summer night and the bar area was not the same. Their new way of how you get your food & drinks is awful. I'm used to yes using an app to see menu & order your food but their system is horrible! Not to mention the added 20% gratuity to the bill for service that you clearly do yourself! I don't mind tipping for service but believe me your not getting much here! No interaction with servers other than a plate delivered! Total disappointment in both their new way of servicing their clientele and food. I chose this place for my Birthday dinner because of the view. What a horrible mistake. Took over 35 mins to get a drink and hour and half for food to come out. I asked to substitute for asparagus for my meal and it came out as an appetizer. Food was over cooked and service was super slow. HORRIBLE SERVICE. I will agree with everyone else, the contactless ordering and the mandatory tip of 20% is RIDICULOUS. We had a large party and our waitress Kathleen (Paige) only came back 3 times. The few times she came back she seemed inconvenienced and annoyed. It took someone in my party 45 minutes to get their food, we pushed the button to try saying something to her and by time she got there the food had came we told her what the button was on for and she said "well the food is there now isn't it?" This restaurant has now become a must visit, when I have family and friends come from out town. This place is overall and amazing dining experience. The ambiance, location, food, music, drinks, everything is top notch. Sitting outside by the lake, nothing feels better. Every meal i've had here has been delicious, every drink perfectly crafted. Steak and seafood are the specialty here. Just walking around the grounds can be an experience, highly, highly recommend. read more

This used to be the queen bee location and now has gone way down hill in every way since Covid. Rapid decline in my last few visits. The Rockets Landing location is now superlative. I will never come back to this location after the shitshow of service this past Saturday evening celebrating a U of R graduation and Mother's Day. I should have canceled our party as soon as we were greeted at the hostess desk.... a unpleasant and absurd story in itself.... it only got worse with crappy dinner service. None of our appetizers, cocktails or entrees came out together. It would be at most one appetizer and maybe two cocktails. Despite ordering at the same time our entrees and another round of drinks, none of us were served together and there was a twenty minute gap from the first entree to come out to the last. Service was inept. Everyone agrees the food quality has declined and we are still talking how bad service and crappy our food and mediocre the drinks. The water view is all this location has going for it. This location needs to learn from Rocketts Landing how to provide decent food; great service, clean premises and staff that is both friendly and intelligent. The Hostess girls at this location are ridiculously dumb and the waitstaff is clueless. Bad management allows this.. Rockets Landing is on-point and has been consistently foe the past year or so getting better and better, as this location has fizzled into a decaying hot mess with the only upside being the water view. The bar staff outside was terrible. More importantly we ether got food poisoning or something put in my wifes drink as she and I got sick as a dog. Beautiful view, attentive waiter. Appetizers were delicious -- I've never enjoyed hush puppies so much. My steak and lobster were excellent though my asparagus was sadly thin and overcooked. Our main course was slow to arrive so they comped a dessert even though we didn't complain. The orange cake was awesome. My sister loved her oyster shooter. My big beef was that my son's macaroni and cheese was Kraft from a box. And they didn't even use butter, just oil. My son ate it happily but I was surprised, disappointed, and not happy to pay as much as I did for that. I would give 3.5 stars. read more

Not impressed. Walked in and ordered a take out. $24.00 Beer Battered Cod filets with sides of fries and slaw. Looked delicious and substantial in photo on web site. Forced to pay 20% "service fee". After tax, bill came to about $32. Was told order would be ready 15 min and they would bring to me while I waited on balcony. Thirty minutes later I go in and ask. Not ready. Front desk gal went to kitchen and was gone little while - kitchen probably putting my dinner together at that moment. Food was mediocre. One small thick and one medium filet with just tiny bit of crunchy exterior, lots of fries, maybe 2 tablespoon slaw, tartar sauce, ketchup. Never again. There are two other restaurants within walking distance of Boathouse at Rocketts, and I'll be going to one of them next time. read more

The on line ordering was disastrous. Five of us received our food at separate 15 minute intervals. The fried eggs came with chopped greens on them. Waffles had watercress on them. The food, without the inappropriate garnishes, was good. 20% gratuity was a joke. What service??? We were told this was the future there and it wasn't going to change! Are you kidding? Our visit to the BH was great. The view from the outside area was wonderful. The non contact ordering worked great once we logged on with the table scan and number. If you have a special occasion or out of town guests, this is the place! By far one of the most picturesque views of any restaurant. From here however, we begin to decline. Some of the hospitality basics of an upscale establishment seem to be missing. One of our party had to inquire about the fresh catch of the day, which she proceeded to order. Unfortunately, it was not prepared the way it had been described and it was undercooked. So, it was returned and the replacement meal arrived as everyone else was finished. Awkward! Were we supposed to be served bread, others had it? This was not my first visit and each time there has been an issue with service. If my score was for service only, it would be a 3 and atmosphere a 5. Highly suggest "Happy Hour" as an better option. read more
