    Southern Pork Sandwich
    Danica B.

Came in for a quick lunch today. This will be our second time, first was back when they opened which was great!! Our server this time was polite and quick. My husband ordered the upgraded steak. I expected a bit more for his steak and they forgot his Shrimp he ordered. I ordered the Southern Pork Sandwich with coleslaw. I was less than impressed with my meal. The seasoning was not there and there was quite a bit of fat and a bone.. maybe the bone was supposed to be in it, but I'd think there should not be a bone in a sandwich. The coleslaw was about 3 bites worth. Probably would give a chance again with a different meal, but not these two.

Second time here and it was good. My boil with shrimp and crab legs was plentiful and hot. The mommas butter was odd like a gravy. It was Alfredo and butter. My wife got the fried shrimp and they were ok. Salad was fresh. The bar area is busy with music . Service was very slow and understaffed.

    Big pretzel

Service was 5 stars. Very prompt, kind, knowledgeable, and overall just a good guy. We started with the giant pretzel and the only reason I dropped a star is that half of it was cooked amazing and one of the best pretzels I've ever had and the other half was overcooked. We were so hungry. It all got eaten, but would have wished it to be cooked evenly. My hubby got the soft shell crab sandwich which he really enjoyed. I got the fried grouper sandwich and I really liked the fresh veggies on it and could tell it wasn't frozen fish. Side of Mac n cheese was delicious. Thanks for making our last meal in crystal river great !

Crawfish and Mussels...this visit we knew not to get the Southern Bayou sauce...

I had 2 bad experiences in a row...the food is definitely mediocre, the service is slow and unattentive....the owners wife insulted me & didn't apologize...we ordered Southern Bayou sauce with our buckets & the waitress didn't bother to tell us it is actually Alfredo sauce...beyond gross on Crawfish and Mussels... you would think she might have given us a heads up... My family and I are never going back... I see a lot of positive reviews and I can't help but wonder if maybe those are friends and family... I posted my experience on my Facebook page and all of my friends spoke up and said they have had similar incidences.... I would give it a hard pass...oh & don't buy the Lobster Roll... the Lobster appears to be canned and looks like little pellets and the roll fell apart in 2 minutes... It's definitely not worth $18.......No Thanks from me & my family!!!!

Clam and Shrimp Boil, my friend said was bland.

We REALLY WANTED to eat at The Crab Plant, but they were closed on a Sunday!!! What the Hell???! So, my uncle recommended The Boil Yard... We walk in and the place looks a little dis-sheveled, like they're ALMOST ready to open and serve customers. It took our waitress several minutes to make first contact- but she was friendly and polite. I ordered the Green Pepper Soup and the Catfish Basket (blackened). Other people at our table ordered The Clam Boil and Blackened Shrimp with Red Potatoes. The soup arrived just barely above room temperature, and after a few minutes I was able to wave down our waitress to ask her to have the kitchen heat it up. The soup was actually quite good. Almost more like Spanish Rice Casserole it was so thick and hearty. It was a LARGE "cup"; a BOWL by most restaurants standards. About this time a bunch of a--hole bikers pulled up outside and revved their bikes engines for 3 or 4 minutes. These are the "look at me because I need attention" LOUD-ASS bikes that seemed to have no mufflers. The restaurant is open-air on one corner near the bar so these idiot bikers sounded like they were right inside with their stupid Viagra-scooters. Our food showed-up and my Blackened Catfish was very salty! I like blackening seasoning but this was just too heavy on the salt. I could feel it roiling in my gut hours later! Their homemade fry-chips were O.K., but not the treat I was lead to believe. My friend said his Clam Boil was O.K., but nothing special. My aunt said her Cajun Shrimp were really good. My uncle liked his Catfish Basket. I went into The Boil Yard with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder anyway (because I was disappointed The Crab Plant was closed), but I tried to remain open minded. The Boil Yard just wasn't very good.

Soft Shell Crab Burger (left) and Blackened Grouper Sandwich (right)

While planning our trip to Crystal River, we landed on the Boil Yard for a post-kayak tour lunch. We were seated right away and greeted by a super friendly hostess and server. We decided on the blackened grouper sandwich per our server's recommendation, and the soft shell crab burger. Food was great and came out fast! The soft shell crab burger was great, but a bit odd that the crab legs are just sticking out of the sandwich. Not sure that's what we expected, but good nonetheless. Highly recommend a stop to The Boil Yard if you're ever in town!

    Raw oyster app

Beyond delicious! It was very busy and crowded, and we had a tad bit of a longer wait, but our waitress was so kind and tried her very best to communicate (short) delays with us. She kept drinks refilled, and checked back several times once we got our food. We had oysters as an app and even got our 10&12 year olds to try them! I thought they were delish, the kids didn't agree with me haha. For our main meal, our 9&10 year old shared a boil with 1 1/2 lbs of snow crab and 1/2 lb of clams, in the backyard sauce. Our 12 year old had a boil with 1 lb snow crab in St Roch. Our 14 year old had the rib-eye. Uncle had 1lb snow crab and 1 lb green mussels in Backyard sauce. And my husband and I shared 1 lb snow crab, 1/2 lb sausage, and 1/2 lb blue crab, in Backyard sauce with garlic added. We all LOVED our food!! I have been in many crab boil types of restaurants, all over the US, and this was easily in the top 2 (the first being at a spot in Bar Harbor, Maine). The seafood was fresh, perfectly cooked, and the seasonings were next level! The one possible complaint was in my 14 year olds ribeye, it was somewhat thin, and not great (but he still rated it a 6/10). But we had warned him about that from the start - I mean, who orders steak at a seafood restaurant?! Go with their specialties lol! Oh, we also added a side of steamed broccoli and the kids devoured it alongside the corn and potatoes that came in the steamer buckets. And our 11 year old loved the clams so much (his first experience with them) that he ordered another pound to be added on. At the end of our almost 2 hour meal, we were beyond stuffed! We had polished off almost everything except maybe 1/4 lb of sausage, and one of 2 crab small knuckles...we wanted to finish everything but we literally were stuffed to the brim. I wish they would sell the Backyard sauce and/or seasoning, it was so so so good!

We found this place unexpectedly and was glad we did. Friendly hostesses, good food and live music. Special shout out to our server, Reggie, who had to have been the hardest worker in the place that night.

Very good food at great prices. Great service and tons of rooms side and out if they get too busy. Pretty good menu. I forgot to get pics of that. I would for sure eat here often if I lived here.

Two completely different places.. let me explain... When you walk in the front door it is a very grey seafood style restaurant that head large tables and a hostess but if you walk into the back where the bar area is.... it feels completely different! High top tables, building is open on two sides with outdoor bar seating, band on a Thursday night! We sat at the bar. Cody our bartender was very attentive and short staffed and yet still on top of it. Ps he also had a torn Achilles' tendon and was running the whole bar which is long! Menu seemed impressive with options and they had a full bar and beers on tap as well. We ordered the calamari app, which I believe was 11 dollars and a very small portion with many fried banana peppers. A bit oily but taste was there. Then we got the sweet potato waffle fries which comes with cinnamon butter... nice touch and Yummy. He got the river special. If you like mustard you like them. It was a brown sauce but tasted a lot of the mustard. We thought they were ok. I got the Mammas butter snow crab which came with potatoes and 2 corn but NOT sausage, that's extra but we got it and it was good. My whole dish was very good but I'd hope so since it's called the boil yard! Lol. Overall I was a good experience and we would go again. People were friendly, food was decent and cool atmosphere but I could see this place getting packed on a weekend.

There was a wait for a table but my boyfriend and I were able to secure 2 spots at the bar. The waitresses/bartenders are BUSSSYYY but they never let our drinks be empty. We both ordered 2 low seafood boils which had sausage, corn, potato's, crawfish, shrimp, mussels/clams and a blue crab in it and covered in old bay with a side of garlic butter. We could not stop talking about this dinner the next day. Everything was so fresh and juicy. For 3 beers, 2 seafood boils with tip we paid $82 which is not a bad deal at all. I'm thinking management must have changed because wow the staff has been better. We both ordered the same thing which we loved from our last trip 2 years ago, the Royal Red Alfredo. We get our dish and it is clearly not what we ordered last time but figure we haven't seen our waitress for 10 minutes and she never even checked on us. We had been out all day so we're starving. Oh, worth mentioning...it was my Birthday. Didnt even get a "Happy Birthday" after mentioning it to our waitress. My mother had to get a refill from the bar. The more we eat the more we realize this wasn't what we ordered, but rather the Shrimp Scampi variant. We call for the manager who argues with us over what an Alfredo sauce is which clearly it is not...he swears it is and that it has separated into God knows what as all we see is a soppy mess of butter and garlic. I show him a picture from Yelp of another customer's Alfredo from the restaurant we are CURRENTLY sitting in and told this is an old picture...We both realize we're getting gaslit as we know what an alfredo sauce is and had the exact dish so we know what it looks like. We agreed that we ate the food and will pay the price for the scampi dish they served us which is $2 cheaper than what we actually ordered. They refused to lower the bill so we left and paid without tipping. I've never had an experience quite like this where the manager will not even work with you. Not even an apology...we will never be back here again. You can judge for yourself if that looks like Alfredo to you. If you want straight seafood, this place might be alright, but the service we received was absolutely terrible.

They also gave us a complimentary order of the Fishnet Onion appetizer, which is thin onion rings. That was also very tasty and crispy. Two of us ordered a cup of their clam chowder. It had a bit of a kick to it and was very delicious. The oyster crackers were stale though. Both of my friends ordered the Grilled Crab Cakes, which I tried, and it was slightly crispy on the outside but moist on the inside. The order came with 3 cakes. Very good indeed. One of the orders came with sweet potato fries that were soggy. She didn't eat them, but our server Alex noticed and took them off her bill. I ordered the Fried Oysters with a baked potato. The oysters were fried perfectly and very tasty. All of our meals came with hush puppies, cole slaw and one side. I also ordered a Gin Cucumber drink that was prepared just right. This used to be one of our Favorite Seafood restaurants. Not anymore…read more Let me be very clear. The food has changed completely from the original recipes from the original owners. It's not the same quality or tastes. Let us go down memory lane here & revisit our last conversation, we had with you all there, last visits. You told us the story that the new owner was so dedicated to keeping the recipes the same, that they offered the one person a higher salary to stay on, because they were the ONLY person that knew how to make the original Clam Chowder, that everyone loved. You told us to our faces, my husband & I, that he was the only person that knew how to make the Clam chowder & you KNEW that you all had a LOYAL CUSTOMER BASE & FOLLOWING that loved your food & you were NEVER going to change the recipes. You told us you offered the man a bigger salary to stay on. You assured us the new owner wasn't going to change the recipes, just give the place "a makeover." We drove hours to get to Dan's on Saturday. We get there & there is a new sign out-front, its super cute, the building is painted very cute, looks like a super cute little Maine lobster shack in New England somewhere you would visit on Vacation. Now, the Local Florida vibes & charm, all gone. Asked for Tabasco & you don't even have any. In a southern Seafood Restaurant. Insanity. We order our usual Haddock sammy's, fries & Fried oyster app. The fried oysters batter is different, it's sweet. The two sauces on the side are different. Tastes like bottled Miracle whip & sweet cocktail sauce with no horseradish at all. Both sauces are HORRIBLE. The haddock batter is different. It's sweet & doesn't stick to the fish. (see photos) It's just falling apart all over the place b4 we could even attempt to eat them. Both our Sammy's a complete sweet mess, and not in a good way. The fries are some kind of GIANT hand cut fries that are undercooked. The bun, is a cheap bun like from walmart. No side of cole slaw nothing. I'm also not sure why your Haddock sandwiches and fries are $25 bucks each, double the price as "Gaby's" in Clearwater, Florida. I have posted many photos of their Haddock Sandwich's also, and not only are theirs half the price at $12.99, theirs are twice as big served on a cornmeal crusted bun WITH cole slaw. Math doesn't add up. Your haddock is overpriced and/or you cannot do simple math. OuiOui. Now that you have wrecked the food we will be eating The Haddock sammy's at Gaby's in Clearwater, Florida from now on. I have now taken you off all my Favorite restaurants lists & added "Dan's" to the "Worst food of our lives lists." Congratulations on your gentrification of what used to be one of our favorite seafood restaurants. You wrecked it, the food sucks. But, great paint job, it looks so cute. Will never return.
