The Boss is an Hong Kong style cafe restaurant in Metrotown. This cafe is located in a shopping mall and take cash only. We came shopping and looking for a place for breakfast/lunch. We had to register for a number and seated shortly. We were seated promptly and received our menu. We ordered wonton soup, beef noodle soup and Butter and condense milk crispy bun. It was a nice quick lunch.

We were starving after a long morning of shopping at Metrotown with the family. That hunger where even the food court feels too far away. The Boss 大班 hits the spot every time. It is our go-to HK-style café tucked right inside the mall. We walked in and instantly felt like we'd entered a classic diner in Hong Kong. The Boss 大班 is renowned for its classic Hong Kong café offerings, including pork chops, baked spaghetti, breakfast combo, and milk tea. This place reminds us of the nostalgic flavours. We ordered a combo meal (as always) -- massive portions. Their portion is always enough to share between two or three people, and most of the combo meal comes with a complimentary hot drink. Our favourite drink is a hot, smooth, and strong cup of Hong Kong milk tea and coffee mixed 港式鴛鴦. There aren't many places like this left in the area--massive menu, all-day breakfast, and classic HK dishes. This place is underrated on social media--just loyal customers and a line out the door. The Boss 大班 may not be trending, but it's been quietly winning hearts since 1999. This place is more than just lunch -- it's tradition, comfort, and a taste of home. Food: 4/5 Should Try! Service: 4/5 Kids: 4/5 Yay! Price: $30-$50 for two (lunch) Presentation: 2/5 Parking: 4/5 moderate free parking by the mall. Tips: * Accepts cash-only. * Go hungry and prepare to take leftovers home. * Do not accept reservations. * Grab a number and check the monitor for the waiting time. So convenient and easy to use.‌ Return: Yes ‍

Beef Tongue on rice ($18.95) and Baked Porkchop on rice ($18.95) both came with a hot drink - Small portion size!

HK Cafe in Metrotown. We were hungry after all the shopping and wanted HK Cafe food. We were quickly seated and interior was clean. As for the food: - Beef Brisket Rice Noodle in soup - was under a Set section where you can mix and match a choice of meat and noodle type. The broth was good but the beef brisket was a bit tough. It was a good size for under $13 (though the menu said $12.75 but they charged $12.95). - Beef Tongue / Baked Porkchop on rice - For these 2 dishes, they looked/taste the same except for the meat on top (which there wasn't a lot of - 1pc of tongue and 1pc of porkchop). The baked porkchop did not have a layer of baked cheese like many other places would have. The rice underneath was not white rice but also couldn't call it fried rice since there was no taste to it. Looked like what we used to get in a mini-afternoon tea size. The meat/sauce tasted ok, typical for a basic HK Cafe. Came with a hot drink (+$1 to sub for cold drink). For $18.95 each, not really worth it. Cash only.

Dinner Bun & Soup (have to pay for the sides now).

The other day, I visited Metrotown and made sure I visited The Boss restaurant for a nice walk down memory lane. It has been several years since I last went to The Boss, and there were a number of changes. They had a new signup system to display the different groups (based on group size). I was going late in the afternoon, so I was seated promptly. Much of the menu remains the same, except the meal combos (that used to automatically come with a dinner roll and soup) were now changed so you had to purchase the sides separately, but there were more options for side dishes. I went with the nostalgia inducing Baked Pork Chop on Rice and added the dinner roll and soup side. The dish came fairly quickly, and it was just as delicious as I remember, albeit a little on the small side. Everything else seems the same; the updated decor and furniture, the speedy service, and the stipulation that this remains (still) a cash only establishment.

I came here after a little shopping with my partner and had a great meal. It's quite reasonably priced in my opinion. Note: Cash only. We got the Sliced Beef Fried Rice Noodle with Soy Sauce, Baked Breaded Pork Chop Fried Rice with Tomato Sauce, and the Special Snack Dish (Golden French Toast with Peanut Butter and Coconut Kaya and Fries). Each main comes with a complementary hot drink, and so does the Special Snack Dish. My partner and I ended up getting three free drinks because of our order, and they also serve hot tea to start. We ended up having five cups on our table LOL. For drinks we had a cold Ribena lemonade, hot Ovaltine, and hot Hong Kong milk tea. Sliced Beef Fried Rice Noodle with Soy Sauce was really good and PACKED with meat. There was enough beef to have a slice with basically every bite of noodle. Insanely good deal! The noodles themselves were really good and well-seasoned. The beef was nice and tender for my soft mouth. Loved this dish. My only complaint is it's too oily. The Baked Breaded Pork Chop Fried Rice with Tomato Sauce wasn't very good. The pork chop was good, but it was pretty small in comparison to the amount of rice we were served. The tomato sauce was fine too -- I can't say too much because I don't like tomato sauce with rice in general. The rice was really mushy though and it detracted from the overall dish. I think this dish was also pretty bland. I wouldn't get this again and I'm wary about any of their other baked rice dishes because the rice texture was so bad. The Golden French Toast was amazing. The peanut butter overpowered the Kaya but I didn't mind as it was still delicious. Comes with syrup to dip and butter to spread. I would want this every time I go to be honest. The fries were great too. I'm pretty sure they use Cavendish straight cut fries, and those are always amazing. Comes with ketchup for dip. Nothing to say about service -- it was good. Our server was very patient with our confusion about the third free drink. The restaurant itself has very casual diner vibes.

Dropped by on an early Sunday morning for a good ol' Hong Kong breakfast! It's been so long since I've been to The Boss. Love the newly renovated restaurant design. All the food came out fairly quickly minus the baked spaghetti which was reasonable assuming it takes a while to make. Service was good and the food itself tasted good as well. Would definitely return during the mornings to avoid the lineups.

If I could do half stars - this would be a 1.5 ~ I've been here a handful of times over the years and this might just be my last ~ I typically get the HK style breakfast or congee to go - but this one was a new level of disappointment - This was likely the worst Baked Pork Chop Rice I have ever had - the top had no cheese which is fine ? - but the sauce tasted like pure ketchup with hints of burnt crisp - the pork itself lacked flavor and was on the mushy side - but the most disappointing was the rice underneath, which honestly tasted like steamed rice , not fried - just scooped from the rice cooker - with hints of leftover scrambled eggs - it did not taste like the egg even belonged with the rice - If I could describe this dish - it would be ketchup on rice with pork - heated slightly in the oven - The hot and spicy soup noodles was OK at best - ok in the sense of you could still eat it and give it a pass - but knowing this was supposed to be Hot &Spicy - you would likely be disappointed - as it was more like a siracha noodle dabbed with vinegar - French toast was okay - but charging for jam is a little much ? - I mean I GET IT , you need to make money where you can and such , but your butter, ketchup, mayo , sugar even honey is all free - but jam is 50 cents - just didn't make a lot of sense to me - as jam could be viewed as essential for bread/toast - I'd steer away from here if you can - but if you must eat here , I'd say maybe have a sandwich or congee ~

Location: inside Metrotown, above T&T Service: can be quick but can also be hit and miss, depends on server ** getting a table may require some wait time Food: traditional HK cafe menu such as all day breakfast option and various HK noodles and rice dishes One of my favorite dish to order at these HK style cafe (茶餐廳) are braised ox tongue rice or wonton noodle soup and French toast for dessert. It's a good choice if you are in Metrotown and you fancy a Chinese style meal - quick stop for afternoon tea, lunch or late brunch. Nice to change up from the food court setting for a slightly quieter dining place with more comfy booth seats. Not all items on menu are of the best consistent taste quality though. We ordered breakfast item - satay beef macaroni and I won't recommend that beef dish. Seems their sauces or cook time is off and it does not taste "authentic". The HK milk tea was kinda "meh" but the chicken wings and scrambled eggs were decent. Note: cash only.

Had to make a quick stop at Metrotown, but also needed to eat. I wasn't feeling food court food, so The Boss got the nod. Hong Kong-style cafe food or "cha chaan teng" is all over the Vancouver area. So what makes this one different? It's at the mall. I'm not trying to be mean. It's perfectly adequate. However, they aren't doing anything to wow their patrons in any meaningful way. It's been a few years since I last visited and they've since renovated which is nice. It's more open and airy. Service was as expected. You don't really go to these places if you want to be pampered or feel special. My daughter and I shared a plate of clams in black bean sauce and gon chow ngau ho (fried rice noodle with beef). The clams were alright, but I recently made it at home and have to admit I made it better. The noodles were tasty, but were missing the wok hei. I suppose this is where my disappointment lies as I can't recreate that at home. All in all, it's decent food and takes you out of the madness of the mall for a moment.

Haven't been here in ages! Only came twice before pandemic and before the renovated the place. Came in Saturday morning and it got busy right at 12. They have great set combos that fill you up for a good price. The waitresses aren't the friendliest but they get the job done. The french toast is one of my favourite! Definitely a must if you ever come here.

I'm so conflicted about this place - I think it's great they've retained the kitsch that makes this place special but operating during COVID their prices have gone up and the food quality is so-so. For the Chinese A+B breakfast set it's pretty much a set menu now and prices have jumped up from several years ago to $12. Small minute steak, eggs (2 options to have it done) and a macaroni soup with drink (extra $ for cold). It was OK food for a very high price. The nice thing is that they were checking for vaccination status and had the tables more spaced out than before. It's tough running a business like this on a busy street in Chinatown.

The Boss restaurant reminds me of those Hong Kong style breakfast lunch dinner places but in a nicer, cleaner restaurant. Upon arrival you check in and are given a ticket with your aloha number which will show up on the electronic board telling you where you are at in the queue. Overall food was 3.5 stars. Congee came out piping hot but could have been more flavorful; chow fun beef was hearty but even with the hot sauce that I requested it could have used more flavoring in the preparation; pork chop was really good as well as the braised lamb dish. I might add that the rice that comes with the lamb dish was a generous portion and cooked perfectly. In summary, we were glad we ate here instead of eating at the food court. Our meals came to $68.

So you come to Crystal Mall, and you got to check out Crystal Cafe which is very centrally located near top of the escalators. It is a HK Cafe. They have a HUGE menu everything from HK style breakfast with instant noodles and egg, egg toast, etc to standard HK Cafe Chinese dishes. Today I came and saw a special menu and at the top of it an oil chicken special. For $16 you get full meal, soup plus drink (I got HK milk tea - 奶茶) which is a terrific deal. It comes with two marinated eggs - delish - and the chicken and rice both have great flavour. I also love the soup which is simple Cantonese style with a spare rib bone in it. Would definitely come here again. Next time I'm having the HK breakfast which I miss!

It was well portioned for the price ($17) and had that 'wok hay' that's missing in so many Cantonese restaurants. My milk tea was good but it's nowhere near as strong as Lido's milk tea flavour. My takeout was approximately 4 portions of noodles (for 1 person). I took this to go and ate it at home and it was still really good. Noodles were cooked to perfection as they weren't soggy for the following meals I had. Beware they only take cash or debit card (if over $15).

I also noticed the sticky floor as we walked to our table. The restaurant was busy and understaffed. My parents placed their order and food arrived fairly quickly until they forgot an item and we had to ask for it. We wanted to cancel the missing item, but our server insisted it was being prepared so cancelling was not even an option. The food tasted alright. Portion size was pretty good. Those are only two positive points during this meal. The worse part was the billing. There was confusion when my parents were trying to pay and they knew the price was incorrect. We reviewed with the server with an itemized list. It turned out they charged my parents for an item that was supposed to be free because of some promotion. Please double check your bill when you pay. Then it took a long time for the staff to fix the bill. Overall, I think it is best to go to this restaurant when it is not busy. This restaurant is large and can accommodate walk in customers seating wise. It is not my first choice in Burnaby if I were in the area during a weekend. I think a lot of the issues that arose was due to understaffing.

We quickly ordered six dimsum dishes and started with some Tieguanyin tea. Unfortunately, the tea was quite bland and full of tea fragments, not a great first impression! Steamed scallops rice rolls 2/5 6. Deep fried taro buns 4/5 Overall, the dim sum was mostly average. The bean curd rolls were way too salty, which explains the low score. The scallop rice rolls were over-steamed and mushy, making them impossible to pick up with chopsticks, they just fell apart instantly. Plus, for some reason, the green onions were way too pungent, which totally overpowered and ruined the flavor of the scallops rice rolls. That being said, the prices here are pretty reasonable, so I guess that's the trade-off. Is it worth a recommendation? Jury's still out. I'll give it another shot and try the HK cafe side before offering my final opinion!

Long lines at both the Yaohan and Henderson Mall locations speak to how popular it is, and the pricing sits in the affordable range for generous, full-meal plates rather than snack-sized portions. The overall value proposition is strong: you get real-deal HK café flavours without feeling like corners were cut. Dishes come out fast and hot, and the kitchen does not skimp on proteins--whether it's pork chops, chicken, or beef, plates feel properly loaded rather than padded with carbs. Despite the crowds, service is efficient and geared toward turnover, which suits the food court setting and keeps waits manageable once you've actually ordered. It's the kind of place where you grab your tray, sit, and eat rather than linger, but it delivers exactly what you come for. Given the combination of flavour, portion size, and price, Cha Don is an easy recommend for Hong Kong café fans looking for a quick, satisfying meal. The only real downside is the lineup; at peak times the queue can be enough to make you think twice. Still, if the line isn't too long, it's absolutely worth returning for another round.

We went around 1pm and surprisingly they ran out of a lot of options including the baked pork chop rice that I really wanted to try. Despite that, we still gave this place a try since there is barely a line, very unusual for this place. We ended up with the scallion chicken noodle (breakfast item), satay beef vermicelli (breakfast item), and black pepper baked filet over rice. These are stuff out of what I usually get, but I still enjoyed them. The scallion chicken dish was $15 which is a bit steep especially given the chicken is tiny but comes with hot drink. The chicken is a grilled chicken with skin which is flavorful, though the noodles were a bit underseasoned so it is ideal to add the sauce from the chicken into the noodles. The satay beef vermicelli is amazing. The beef is so tender and flavorful, and enhances the flavor of the vermicelli. The eggs and toast were delicious too - eggs were scrambled over easy, and the toast is very crunchy. Black pepper baked filet over rice was pretty hearty. I love the fragrance of the rice and the filet is very tender. The black pepper sauce does clash and dominate some of the flavors but it is still nonetheless well executed. For the drinks that come with the meals, we got milk tea and milk tea + coffee (yin yang) - these drink are high in caffeine even with the small size! Will update to 5 stars when I try the full suite of items they are known for, since the dishes we got were good but stuff that I could've gotten elsewhere.

But once you enter, you are instantly think you're in a different place. The place is quite cute and gave me small hints of nostalgia, as there was some artwork that reminds me of my grandparents generation. They had a small display area selling various local HK-culture related books, jewelry and stationary. As my kids took a table, my wife and I approached the counter, and were welcomed with a big smile. His first question? "Do you prefer I speak in English or Cantonese?" In all my life, I've never been asked that question when visiting a cafe or restaurant. It's a testament to their dedication to customer service and making visitors feel right at home. In addition to what found on their menu, he added they just introduce rice bowls for lunch. So we decided to try the following: - Ginger Scallion Fried Chicken Wings: Very good. Chicken with ginger scallion, is pretty common. But fried chicken wings with freshly prepared ginger scallion is next level. I really enjoyed this. - Mochi Brownie: Good. Tasted like "Lao Mai Chi" (糯米滋) - with chocolate. - Maple HK Milk Tea Latte: Good. A successful take on milk tea in a latte form. - Rice Bowls: Very good. They had two bowls - chicken and vegetarian - both equally good. Carefully prepared. The use of crispy scallions makes it so much better. Service was incredible. From taking our order, carefully bringing out eating utensils and folding them into napkins, delivering our food, and checking up on us - this is full restaurant level service in a cafe setting. I really enjoyed our visit. I would rate this place a 4.5 if I could give half stars. The space is nice, the food is very good, but the its service and family atmosphere that really sets this place apart. I hope to visit again soon.

Finally got a chance to try this place after a few decades. Still remember when it was Dragon Inn…read more The place was packed late at night, which is always a good sign. Parking is available but limited in the lot in front. Better to look along Kingsway, or in the side streets behind the restaurant. I found it hilarious that the lot specifically prohibits parking for Tina Cake next door. Guess that must've been a problem over the years. The inside is plain and quite dated (old school). Looks like something out of the 1980s. Awesome. Staff are friendly and helpful. No complaints. Everything hit the spot in terms of authentic Cantonese. I had the stir fried beef with black pepper sauce, Hainan style chicken, and sweet and sour pork. Everything tasted great. Portion sizes are decent, and prices are quite reasonable. As the dishes are shared, it is best to come in groups (at least 3-4) so more dishes can be ordered. Looks like I've found my go-to for late night Cantonese food. Recommended.

This place has been decent in the past and consistently put out large portions of food at reasonable prices. I don't believe anything is outstanding, but always an overall enjoyable meal. Service is relatively friendly too. On a recent night, the most memorable dish had to be the Bean Sprouts w/ Salted Fish, which was full of umami and went well with a bowl of white rice. The Steamed Oysters w/ Garlic Sauce, Beef Chow Fun, and Seafood Chow Mein were all solid. However, the Dry Scallop Fish Maw Soup was bland, and the Goose Casserole w/ Taro was a major disappointment. Reminder to self, I originally wanted to order Tofu Skin in Dry Scallop Sauce, but was convinced otherwise. The recommended dish had snow pea leaves that were a bit tough, though the supreme broth and tofu skin that came with it were yummy. Next time, I want to try my initial selection. Also, don't forget that cheap late night eats is something I should come back for.

We're…read morealso typically in the area looking for a quick, cheap meal from the food court, and this spot definitely isn't food court pricing. But on a Saturday ~12pm, there isn't a line outside the door so we finally gave it a try and we were glad we did. We ordered the double decker noodles, garlic chicken noodles and galbi. The galbi were fall off the bones tender and packed with flavor. Double decker noodle was HUGE, and boldly flavored, and have a kick but not too spicy. The garlic chicken noodle was flavorful, creamy, and comforting. The only down side is the restuarant is a bit tight, you feel very close to the next table. But the food makes up for it.

The restaurant was nice, clean, and well organized. Tables sit 2 and 4, so if you have a bigger party you might be split up. We got the combo galbi for 2. 4/5 The galbi was sweet and delicious. Wish it would've came out a bit hotter, but the flavour was great and they crushed some fresh sesame for us at the table. 5/5 Double decker pork bone broth. Had lots of meat on the pork bones and came with a nice sauce. There was some heat in the soup but in a delicious way. Lots of noodles. 5/5 chicky chicky ginseng. Lots of garlic flavor. Lots of noodles and the soup comes piping hot. Restaurant started to fill up around 1230pm on a Sunday, luckily we got there earlier. Would definitely come back.
