I've been living in Costa Mesa for about 1 year now as a bartender that works over in Corona Del Mar. I make craft cocktails on a daily basis but when I drink, whiskey has my heart. Within the first couple months of living here I stopped into the Boulevard to check it out since it's so close to where I live. I immediately fell in love with the extremely extensive whiskey selection and the really friendly and knowledgeable bar staff. I was introduced to the bar manager Andy Black who blew my mind with his love and knowledge of whiskey as well. I soon came to realize that a lot of local bartenders hang out here as well and I got to them better. Since then this group of whiskey lovers and bartenders I've gotten to know, including myself has evolved into a "Whiskey Society" and we've made it a point to meet every Monday night that we can to get together and try a new fantastic whiskies together while educating each other on them as well! We've become a whiskey family. The 1824 Whiskey Society Family. I suppose all I'm saying is that if you love whiskey, it'd be in your best interest to swing by the boulevard on a slow night and just enjoy! Rylee was so incredibly rude. I'm a regular at this bar and I came in around 1:20am when they were getting ready to do last call. I told Rylee I had friends coming in and he said it was fine, letting one of my girlfriends and I in. We bought all of my friends drinks and then I get a call from one of my friends 3 min later saying he wouldn't let them in (they were guys I might add). I went outside and showed him all the drinks I had bought them and He said "that's not my problem." I said "wait really?" And he said "yeah (with attitude), do you want me to escort you out!?" Only come here if you have at least 10 drinks in you already. Bartenders are slow and pricey for a spot next to the great old Goat Hill. They have TouchTunes so you can at least play your own music which is cool so you can run the jukebox all night. Hm.. Well, it's definitely not The Helm anymore! My friend and I used to go there for some serious Dive, but it's been replaced with the much more OC Douchebag Central, The Boulevard. But know your audience. This location is crammed with that demographic, so it works. We were there on a Sat Night, it was slammed. My friend knew some of the bartenders so we got a little faster service than most people might. Lots of Craft Cocktail type things, everyone wants to be CRAFTY now. Drinks were good, not cheap. They have the same back patio that the Helm had, and same thing...everyone goes out there to smoke, so don't think you're getting any fresh air if you decide to venture out that way. Interior decor is trendy, cool. It's fine, I'd go again. It's better than the Helm, it's more my speed than Goat Hill. But, I really don't go to OC that much. BARTENDER SPRAYED ME WITH WATER TWICE!!! I am livid right now. It was my birthday and I came to the Boulevard with my friends. I got a margarita and it was filled with ice, barely any drink and got charged $20. All my friends noticed and said that I should say something because it was ridiculous. I finished the drink in less then a minute just sipping it. Then I let the bartender know that I didn't understand why my drink was so expensive when I barely had anything in the cup. She got very mad yelled at me and then sprayed water at me while I was standing with my friends. TWICE! We went to the bouncer to tell him what happened because I was upset crying I couldn't believe how I was just treated. Then the bartender came out and called me a b**ch and to get the F off her property. All because I told her I didn't think that should have costed $20. never coming back here again. I had a good time there but what really soured my experience was that when I closed my tab, I was given a piece of paper with chicken scratch over it. How the hell am I supposed to read that? Fortunately, I was able to make out one thing .... GRATUITY was automatically added. I've never heard of a bar that does that. This bar exceeded my expectations in every way possible!! I wanted to plan a surprise birthday shindig for the bf here and saw that they had the option to reserve a table on their website. I did just that and promptly got an email back from Robert asking about the details. He was completely professional and super helpful over email.. little did I know he was so friendly and sweet in person too! We had the big booth reserved and my friends had no problems coming in and sitting while I brought the bday boy. Drinks were cheap and fabulous. Robert was also the bartender and he took care of us all night! And oh my god.. the music!!! They were playing good/old school hip hop and it was just so perfect. Let me start by saying that The Boulevard is an overflow bar. Goat Hill Tavern next door is the marquee bar on the block and The Boulevard is quietly seated next door. When Goat Hill is full, people find their way there. Early in the evening, it's a cool, quiet place to grab a drink. Don't come here for beer, they have a pretty crummy selection and almost nothing is on tap. This is a mixed drink bar. As soon as it gets a little later in the evening, the bar slowly starts to fill and the music changes from cool, classic tunes to super loud club music which makes conversation impossible and naturally draws the crowd that, if you aren't a fan of club music, is not your crowd. It's loud, overcrowded with people I don't want to spend time with. So... If loud club music, tank-topped, sandle-footed, backpack wearing bums, and no beer are your thing, this is right up your alley. If you like beer, good music, cool people... Not your place. read more

Went to catch up with a gf and check out the new bar in town. Showed up early around 9 on a Friday, not too many people yet so snagged one of the booths in front. This place has been completely gutted from the dive that it used to be (The Helm - honestly, was always a bit scared to enter the previous joint). They've done a nice job with it. There are two rows of large U shaped booths, probably could fit about 6-7 people comfortably in them. The bar then stretches the length of the place. Ceilings are covered in a copper tin. They also have an old school car on display in the front area (random?) Shuffleboard and smoking area are located towards the back. A few TV's spread throughout to maybe catch a glimpse of the game. The martini's were recommended to me so we tried a couple of them. Both were made well and weren't overly sweet/sour; best part was that they only cost $7.50. I believe, this is the same owners as Goat so you still get the great selection of beers, I think they had close to 20 on tap and about 20 more in bottles. By 11 the place was busy, every booth taken and people standing all along the bar. Music was eclectic and I think there is a jukebox? Crowd is a mix of old/young, hipster/Newport/CM Grunge. Bartenders were a bit on the slow side, but I get the feeling this is a regulars place and once they know you, you'll get the speedy service. read more

I've been coming to The Boulevard for the last year when I moved to Costa Mesa. If you haven't been in awhile, you should check it out again. I have personally always liked The Boulevard. Even when they just had touchtunes or playing the house music. It's always a fun, happy crowd. Mostly 20-30 somethings in age. Although I'm in my 40s..(Cool 40s tho!) I saw someone say it's hipsters.. Not!.. Ya there's a few. but try going anywhere in Costa Mesa and not seeing them. And it's not like hipsters are scary anyway..lol As for the drinks. Rob and Andy make some of the best drinks I've had. There used to be a female bartender that kinda sucked. but she is gone. Now that they have live music I totally dig it. One of the coolest bands I've seen in a long time (Slime Kings) play here often.(punkish/ska/cool original stuff) Definitely reccomend seeing them. Also a solo artist Eric Kufs is really good as well with a voice similar to Jack Johnson. All in all a fun place to hang with friends or go to for after dinner drinks and live music. Last night, I had a very unfortunate event occur with a couple of friends. Whilst paying for drinks, one of my friend's card was declined. I then decided to give them my card so that the drinks were covered. My card went through, and the bartender immediately snatched away the drinks that I ultimately paid for at the behest of Carrie, the bar manager. My friends an myself were rudely escorted out of the establishment where we were met by Carrie and two threatening security guards with one of them threatening violence. Carrie, the manager, caused a huge scene outside, so I then decided to take out my cell phone to document her screaming offensive threatening obscenities. She then came up to me and snatched my cell phone out of my hands. As I went to retrieve my personal item, security restrained my all the while Carrie was still causing an embarrassing scene. It seems to me that "leadership" needs to go through major sensitivity training, and also needs to be trained on customer service and how to handle a minor discrepancy. We live in a very litigious society, and while I absolutely CAN press charges for 1. My personal item being taken away, 2. Being kicked out of an establishment after being a paying customer, and 3. Being wrongfully manhandled by security. I am still weighing my options as it weighs on my dignity. read more

*IMPORTANT* Saturday April 17th my friend and I were roofied at The Boulevard in Costa Mesa. We met up with friends for drinks and only remember taking a few sips from the first one. Within 30 minutes we were lights out completely. Thank God for our friends who were concerned by our almost immediate impairment. They took care of us and got us to safety, otherwise not sure what could've happened. The next day we were extremely ill, lethargic, and foggy. We decided to take instant drug tests and they came back positive for Benzodiazepine and Opioids. We immediately contacted the bar and filed a report with CMPD. We went back to the bar and it was shrugged off as "there's not much they can do". The bar has our contact information, but has not made any attempts to reach out to us. We are deeply troubled by the lack of concern and inaction. We were sick for three days following this. The Boulevard is the first and last place we went to that night. Ladies, PLEASE do not go here. Be careful - watch the bartender make your drinks and hand them directly to you. Be aware of your surroundings and of anyone who may be watching you. Most importantly, surround yourself with good friends who look out for your well-being. The next girl might not be so lucky. We feel it is our responsibility to speak out.
