The Boy and the Bear is a pretty impressive coffee roaster that has a lot of attention to detail. They have seven locations in LA from Pasadena to Redondo, and they're expanding soon to San Diego. While you certainly can come here for lattes and matcha, what jumped out at us were their offerings of light roasted, single origin, pour over coffees in their "emerald class". I went with their light roasted "la reserva" pour over, which had nice tea-like flavors. Because they lightly roast their beans and hand pour the coffee through a V60 filter, the fruity and tea-like notes of the beans pop out in ways you can't find in dark roasts brewed through a machine. We may come by to get a latte one of these days; however, I do also want to come back to try more of their "emerald series" pour overs! read more

Modern coffee, tea, and vibes with a price tag. Visited on a Friday afternoon to finish up some work on the computer. Was able to get some street parking on the main street. Walking in, it's pretty spacious with some seating - very minimalist vibes. Ended up ordering a rose tea and an almond croissant. I didn't see prices of the pastry, but the tea was about $5. Total came out to $14 - so seems the croissant was pretty pricey. The rose tea was pretty good - steeped well and not too hot upon serving, so you can actually drink your drink right away. You def get floral flavors and aroma - so worked out well. The croissant was a different story - seemed old and dry, I took two bites and couldn't eat the rest. Their newest opening. It's quaint inside but I feel like the set up for ordering should be where the door opens. A couple seating inside where you can watch them roast the coffee beans. The black coffee I'm sure is wonderful. But I'm too fancy and need a latte. Tried the Stockholm fog with a shot and it was a bit much. Do it without a shot. I felt the caffeine. This was my second time visiting The Boy and the Bear in Gardena. The first time I came, I ordered the chai chocolate latte called the Stockholm Fog, and it was delicious. It had a great chai flavor with a subtle hint of chocolate and a touch of cinnamon--really tasty. Honestly, I wish I would've ordered that again. I've been driving by this spot for so long I was so excited to finally try it out! We came late Sunday morning and there was no wait and plenty of street parking. The inside was very modern, aesthetic and cool. Both the baristas working were super friendly and greeted us when we walked in too. Now the coffee.., I'm a bit conflicted on how to rate this because it was really good but the most expensive coffee I've ever had. We got a mocha latte and a vanilla one both with oat milk. The milk was an extra charge, I believe syrups were $1.25 and made in house. Overall I paid $17 something with no tip for two lattes. While they were perfectly balanced with a good coffee taste and subtle sweetness, I have a hard time justifying the price. I understand it's about quality, but I feel like it is extremely overpriced and you can get a good quality latte other places for less. The barista greeted me while finishing up a drink. I wasn't immediately sure where the menu was, but after a quick look around I found it. The selection isn't huge, but that actually works in its favor--it feels like they focus on doing a few things well. I ordered an unsweetened iced matcha with simple syrup on the side, along with a warmed croissant. While waiting, I looked around the shop. They sell freshly ground beans, and the prep area almost looks like a little science setup, which was interesting to see. I love everything about this coffee shop. The coffee shop alone is my favorite color, there is minimal seating along the counter and the pastries are big fresh - though I wish there were wooden signs so consumers know the price before purchasing. Now to my fellow coffee hipsters - there are various coffees using different beans and flavor profiles for you to try - additionally there are beans that you could take home. I bought "Fabian Acevado?" and it was really good - make a Chemex cup every morning and the box gives me instructions on how much to weigh out and how much water to pour. When I came this past week in the afternoon, there was no line and I was lucky to get a parking spot right in front on the street. All the tables were filled with people working on their laptops. There is an option to order online but the promo code wasn't working so I ended up just ordering in person. I tried: - Cappuccino with oat milk: I opted for a hot version. It was made very well and I really enjoyed it! I liked that I could actually taste the coffee. - Iced sparkling americano with a splash of vanilla: if you like fizzy drinks and want something refreshing, I highly recommend trying this one! From the outside it looks ordinary but as you step inside you are welcomed into an aesthetically, beautiful and welcoming coffeehouse. The aromas as you walk in are just amazing. My friends and I have had our eyes on this place for a while now and it's felt like it's taken forever from the time the signs went up to them finally open. We dropped by today with a friend and each all offered a coffee and pastry. I got a cold brew latte and an apple danish, my partner got a cold brew and tomato pesto danish, and my friend got a flat white and croissant. All of us got our orders to dine in. Overall, we liked the danishes (which were large and flakey) but there were no prices posted. They ended up being around $8 to $9. Really wish they post prices but I know not posting prices is something fancier places do but not something typical in Gardena. Anyway, not mad I paid that much since I could have asked but I do know it's a strategy to not post prices because it sort of traps customers to not want to back out of a purchase of embarrassment and also to allow the establishment to change prices at will. Next, our coffees were all good (and the prices were posted for those), but the coffees we got were safe options. The Boy and The Bear are known for excellent coffee, but their menu definitely caters more to the initiated. As someone who's not a coffee connoisseur, I'd love to explore something new, but the minimalist menu doesn't offer much guidance. You can ask the staff, but with the line moving quickly, it's easy to feel rushed. If you're unfamiliar with specialty coffee, I'd recommend doing a bit of research beforehand. This was actually our second visit. The first time, we left without ordering because the menu felt too opaque. Today, we followed through thanks to a friend nudging us to just pick something simple. All in all, I don't fault a specialty coffee shop for not explaining what specialty coffee is--but given the stark, elevated aesthetic, a little signage or guidance wouldn't hurt. I get that some might say "just Google it," and sure, maybe these places don't have an obligation to educate. Still, the ultra-minimal vibe can unintentionally create a slightly intimidating atmosphere for newcomers and definitely not something people in Gardena would be used to. As for the atmosphere, the shop leans heavily into an industrial throwback vibe. The entire space is coated in sky blue with a clinical feel--tiles cover nearly every surface, including the benches. The acoustics are stark, with noticeable echo throughout, especially in the hallway near the restroom. On the practical side, there were no visible utensils for the pastries, and napkins weren't provided with our dine-in orders. There weren't any dispensers either, though I suspect both might be available if requested. Still, it would've been nice if they were offered proactively. Also, my dine in order came in a glass and my friends came in a plastic cup. Also, the trays are undeniably cute, but not very functional. Unlike most cafés, these trays are super smooth and slick--everything on them slides around. As I carried ours, the food shifted and spilled slightly (carrying a tray in each hand was also less than convenient). At the table next to us, I watched two women struggle to carry their orders as their drinks slid and their coffee sloshed out. A bit of texture or rubber padding would go a long way. One more thing: there's a gated parking lot adjacent to the shop, but it's not open to guests. While street parking wasn't difficult, it's worth noting that nearby homes have posted signs reading "no coffee parking," which suggests that parking has already become a point of tension in the neighborhood. All in all, I'm glad The Boy and The Bear has opened and elevated what coffee means in Gardena. That said, the shop feels somewhat transplanted, with little adjustment for a neighborhood that's distinctly different from Redondo Beach, Pasadena, or Culver City. Very expensive! I did enjoy my drink and avocado toast but for me and my fiancée it was around 60 dollars so $15 an item including tip. I would like this place better if the interior was a bit more focused on comfort. I think they have nice lines inside but no couches. I prefer coffee shops with an old school couch and acoustic guitar type vibe. Still, it was nice inside. The service was helpful and attentive! I'm so happy the Gardena location is finally open! The parking in the area isn't ideal, especially since this location is still pretty new. You'll probably have to find street parking but it shouldn't be too hard to find. The inside of the store is very blue and minimalist. There's ample seating I did although it was pretty full today but people didn't seem to linger too long. The line for coffee wasn't too bad but it did get quite warm with all the bodies inside. The area away from the coffee bar is much cooler. I ordered a matcha latte with vanilla syrup, an Americano for my mom, and a cold brew for my boyfriend. My matcha latte was creamy with just the right amount of vanilla. I also tasted the Americano even though I'm a child and don't prefer drinking coffee without adding oat milk or flavoring, but it was smooth. My boyfriend thought the cold brew was on the and overly bitter side but wants to try a latte next time. I'm excited Gardena has yet another major player in the coffee game. It's OPEN! We've been waiting for this place to open. It finally opened a few months ago, but we were told the lines were long. We ventured to visit one Saturday and there was no line when we entered. A line soon appeared after we entered. Talk about great timing! Not to fear, the line moved quickly! We were people/line watching from our vantage point. I really enjoyed the aesthetics of the cafe. Much thought was placed into the interior design, the furniture selection, the packaging as well as the presentation. I give extra points for the color palette! Blue is my favorite color and the dusty blue has a calming appeal. As you enter, assuming there is no line, walk to the left side of the store and towards the wall. The "line" starts at the merchandise wall and wraps around to the register. While you are in line, you can peruse their packaged teas and coffees for purchase, including reusable tumblers. As the line wraps around, you will be greeted by their pastry selection. Alas! They looked so scrumptious but our bellies were full from lunch and we could only gaze at the tempting offers. Located off Western Ave in Gardena. I believe this was some sort of Industrial type of building since the majority of businesses along this stretch of Western are. They do have a small lot on the side that I first missed. The place is nice but not too big a few tables and a couple of sitting areas there are a few tables along the back side of this place it's shaped kind of like an L inside. The staff seemed friendly. The service was pretty good despite the crowd they were pretty efficient and quick. They were all working hard behind the counter so bonus points for that . Made a trip out to South Bay just to get coffee with my cousin and the closest non-Starbucks location to her was Nook at the Enclave, but that line was ridiculous. I've had Nook, I would not wait in a line out the door for it. Next closest coffee spot was Boy & the Bear five minutes away. It's almost kind of easy to miss because the building looks like it could have been an old medical office from the 60's or 70's and it's painted this sterile blue color, so keep an eye out for the corner of 180th and Western. We parked in their lot off of Western which has a few spots but we were able to snag one and there's plenty of street parking. We both ordered a vanilla latte and added caramel. Mine had half caramel and her's had full caramel. The iced coffee was SMOOTH. No bitterness, not too much artificial sweetener (they make their vanilla syrup in house). I'm a fan of Hidden House in Santa Ana and Portola in O.C. and this is on par with that. They also roast their own beans in house and I believe I saw instant coffee packets for sale and some smaller bags of coffee for sale in the front. Inside, the decor is giving operating theater with the room in the middle showcasing the roaster and enclosed by huge glass windows. It almost looks like it takes the entire floor up, but if you go towards the back you'll find more seating with people working on their laptops and what not. There's a lot of coffee places to choose from in Gardena, but Boy & Bear is my new go-to. It's not trying too hard, service was fast and friendly, and the coffee speaks for itself! read more

I've been waiting for this place to open for...what seems like years and they finally opened a few months ago! The first time we went was on a Saturday and honestly the line was so long we left. The second time we went was on a weekday and the line was much better. There is no parking lot, prepare to park around the area. This place is bigger than it seems - It's actually 4,000 sq feet with 3,000 of it dedicated to their roasting operations. This isn't just any location, either - barista trainees will come here to train before going off to work at their other branches. There's a lot of seating inside. I got their matcha latte with oat milk slightly sweetend with honey. If you don't ask for sweetner they won't put any in it because it's ceremoial grade matcha - not the packaged stuff with sugar already mixed in. My husband got a mocha latte with oat milk. The matcha was just okay but I thought it could use more powder (but that would probably make the drink more expensive lol) but my husband liked his mocha. I think for their prices, we can do better. This place has great ambiance, even played lofi synthwave for music which I don't think I've ever encountered in the wild. Employees are attentive and welcoming. The chai latte I ordered tasted great, if a bit sweet, I'll ask if I can adjust that should I come back. The 2 pastries I ordered were just okay, but each cost more than the drink I ordered. I would just stick to the coffee and teas IMHO. If vibes and customer service is more important to you, than this place is right up your alley. I have to say that this is one of the few gorgeous coffee establishments I have came across. Simple, yet very peaceful inside if that makes sense. like that you can see them working on your coffee and that to me makes it even better. I got a vanilla latte with oat milk and a spinach and feta pastry. The latte was on the sweeter side, but that's easy to modify next time. It wasn't hot which I preferred it to be. It was warm and it got cold really fast. The pastry was absolutely delicious. Super flaky and so much flavor. Service was great. I loved the whole ambiance of this space. $1 for milk alternative is a bit much. I love the places where they don't charge for a milk alternative. I will be back soon. Already craving the pastries.
