The Boy and the Bear is all rizzed up. Seriously, the interior is beautifully painted and the sides are filled with beautiful green plants. The drinks are up to par if not better than it looks, especially the Vanilla latte which is incredibly flavorful and leaves a lovely lingering bittersweet note upon consumption. This is a spot that I feel so many other coffee shops attempt to become but sadly fall short. I make it a point to come here once a week for my weekend treat. The people are always so kind to me and I always leave completely satisfied. The one time my order was messed up, they fixed it right away in the middle of a huge rush with no complaints. It's a very different experience than going to Starbucks where I feel like just a task that someone's crossed off their list. If you are going to have strange, abnormal ground rules for how to partake in your company's product, you need to alert the customer prior to purchase. Have been here several times and, most recently, was informed that it violated company policy for me to take my pour-over coffee to go. After kicking my latte to go habit when I was gifted an espresso machine at home, this remains the one coffee shop I will still treat myself to on occasion. I love the staff. I can tell they love what they do and where they work. There's a drink called Stockholm Fog, a cross between a mocha and a chai latte. It is life changing magic in a cup. I love it here. The space is beautiful and filled with real plants. I don't understand the negative reviews. The baristas are probably the most skilled and consistent that I've found in LA. I usually get a gibraltar or a pour over because it can be hard to find baristas who are able to prepare those really really well, and the ones here can. Their cappuccinos and americanos are also very good. I've worked from here for entire days probably dozens of times. I've never ever had an issue with the wifi, even when taking video calls. I've waited a bit before I passed judgement on this place and I have to say that after coming 5+ times I'm addicted to their mocha. First time I've after craved coffee so much. I'm honestly not much of a coffee drinker but I'll reach for one once in a while to get me through a long work day. I like the flavor profiles and all that but can't deal with the caffeine effects. I don't know their secrets but the mocha is the best I've had in the Pasadena area hands down. Really smooth, not too sweet or rich. I try to come in every other week to get one and when I'm thinking coffee, the mocha here is the first thing I think of. Now I do understand other people's comments around service and staffing. I've experienced some issues myself where we had to ask about our order after 20 minutes. I also get it's a relatively new operation though, and I don't want to go immediately ruining a business's reputation after just one visit. I think they've improved over time. read more

Yesterday my hairdresser asked if I tried your coffee shop and he had a similar experience and said the the young lady and man were very curt and rude. They did not take kindly to him asking what were in the pastries. He's not coming back either. If you read through your reviews it's a common experience. You need to train your employees. I made a Yelp account just to write this review after being surprised at the lowish rating for The Boy and The Bear, when (in my opinion, of course) the modern espresso here is the best I've had in Pasadena. The drinks are admittedly on the expensive side, so I've only been here twice so far, but both times I've been blown away by the modern Gibraltar (aka cortado) and as a treat, I think it is absolutely worth the money. You can taste the unique qualities of the beans that went into the espresso. There was a lovely fruity aftertaste I particularly enjoyed; it reminded me of some of my favorite natural process coffees I've prepared at home. The whole milk enhanced the drink rather than compensating for any bitterness in the coffee, highlighting the natural sweetness of the espresso and helping flavors linger longer on the tongue. Their in-store whole bean selection has more variety than I expected considering the focus on specialty coffees from only Colombia. I picked up a bag of the honey process Maragogype (a coffee varietal with particularly large beans that I don't see too often) on my second visit that I'm very excited to try on my V60. read more

I'm alway looking for new places to try coffee and I came across this one. I probably should have read the reviews before making the decision to come in. At first glance the place is aesthetically pleasing and very picture worthy. However, the line took forever and lady taking orders upfront was very snobby. I asked her a couple questions and she responded very rudely. My coffee took about 15-20 minutes. The guy who gave me my drink was very apologetic which is why I gave this place 3 stars as well as the pretty atmosphere. The coffee here is pretty mediocre and a little on the pricey side for an average cup of coffee. I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. read more

Super yummo coffee. I have truly never been disappointed. My go to is the salted caramel latte with oat but no coffee i've had here has been bad. They also have yummy pastries every day. The almond croissant is . There is parking behind the shop which is a big plus and the inside is so cute! It has a good amount of seats (i've never had to wait for long to sit).
