Walked to this charming cafe this morning for breakfast. We got there when it opened at 0700, and found a delectable plethora of pastries! We each picked out a different pastry to try and sat and tasted each one. Ladies behind the counter were so kind and patient (I have three kids)! Low key, cozy storefront and tables. 4 stars for food, lost 1 star for service. The Bread Peddler is a classic stop for my family and I on our way back from the Olympic Peninsula to Seattle. They have fed us well after many hikes and have an array of delicious pastries and sandwiches. However, on our most recent visit, we ordered our food and then waited... and waited... and waited, with no food arriving, and no explanation either. Several times we wondered if we should ask after the food, if we had been forgotten, or what was the matter. Finally the food arrived, thankfully still warm, but still with no explanation of what had happened. Food was good, although french onion soup came with too little bread on the side. Croque Madame was excellent. It is a good place to stop in Olympia and also good for baked goods so I'm sure we'll be back next time we pass through, hopefully the kitchen will be a little faster. read more

Great experience! We stopped in cause it was a bread and soup kind of morning. I had been wanting to give them a shot for months and tbh I am disappointed that I didn't try them sooner. The ham and cheese pastry had a croissant like flakey goodness, and the loaf of garlic and cheese sour dough was to die for, I ate half the loaf dipping it in my French onion soup... I will say the French onion was only average, BUT the salad it came with more then made up for it. I can't say there are too many things I love more then a good soup, salad, and bread. I loved the vibe too, the people were so friendly and welcoming. Really the only complaint I had was it was PACKED and there was really no where to sit, we ended up grabbing a seat at the ice cream shop outside, and when a spot opened inside, moved closer. Don't let this deter you though. The seating issue isn't that big a deal, and it was totally worth the hassle, for the yums. read more

Eggs benedict with bacon was meh. The yolks were cooked completely within the poached eggs, which really saddened me since I prefer and expected it to be runny. The hollandaise didn't have much taste to it. The thick bacon was delicious but the dish overall could be skipped. It's probably better to just get their pastries rather than wait for a hot breakfast plate. The staff were all really nice and friendly though. read more

Finally was able to get to eat at Bread Peddler went to breakfast with the bestie this morning. It was honestly so so good. Shared a beautiful Kouign Amann so flakey so good and completely different from Left Banks. Also had a Pistachio raspberry pastry. Got the Challah eggs benedict with bacon. It was really good the Hollande sauce was so creamy the only issue I had was my poached egg wasnt runny which if that's all you serve egg wise you should know how to do a poached egg. Especially for a $15 plate. Also I wish I would of got the ham it looked better. Honestly I would eat this again though definitely go try them get some pastries get some of there good coffee and a breakfast. read more

Family road trip to Ocean Shores and we usually stop by in Olympia for a bite. We came here on a Friday morning around 11am, service was friendly and very helpful. There were so many items to select from you wanted to ask about all of them. This wasn't our lunch destination but I think it will be next time. We came here because I wanted to check out 222 Market and then I saw they make one of my favorites kouign amann. Had to stop by. Such a cute bakery, welcoming great pastries so much so the best I got a pic of was a plant was too busy enjoying my chai and talking with my family over a few items we had to try. Everything was delicious we shared a savory bread pudding, a sweet bread pudding and an item that was like an empanada. Everything was so delicious. I got six kouign amanns to go three regular and three chocolate never had a chocolate was excited to try it. We cut them in half so everyone go to try both. None of my family had ever had one, now that my sister in law knows what they are she's going to be on the look out for them. She was anxious like myself to come back for a real meal. We had a homemade chai and two drip coffees. Will definitely be back and recommend to anyone headed to Olympia. read more

Best bread in town, hands down... although a bit pricey - it's worth it! The pastries are fab as well. Both disappear in our house rapidly. Only problem is that things sell out often by noon (esp on weekends) so you gotta get there early. There's also often nowhere to sit inside because of limited seating. I always go here when I'm driving through or if I am visiting Olympia. The food is so delicious and it is a really nice casual cafe/bakery setting with friendly folks at the counter. I ordered the soup of the day and it was a gluten free vegetable soup that was super flavorful- I say go for the bowl size because it comes with their yummy bread and butter. While the food here is incredible and the bread is amazing, I am tired of how the staff treat my husband when he goes there for us on Sundays. My husband is a kind friendly man who doesn't look like downtown Olympia peeps or the staff that works there. They are rude mean and nasty towards him every time. WHAT A TASTY SURPRISE (4.5 Stars) Decided to have a quick breakfast bite at the state's Capital. We came here at 9:30am and the place was packed with regulars. The line parallel to the glass case of pastries has a good amount of people but it moves quickly. There's breakfast items, espresso, and pastries. I had to try the pastries!!! There were a ton of pastries to choose from and it was hard to pick one. My first impression, mass production means stale pastries. I assumed these pastries may taste typical like any other pastry shop and so I played it safe a hazelnut latte and a ham and cheese croissant. There were only two left so i think it must be a popular item. HAM AND CHEESE CROISSANT - one of the best I have ever had. The croissant didn't look like a croissant but the lightness, flaky, and buttery flavors had the true taste of a fresh croissant. The cheese and ham were a perfect ratio and I could taste the bread over both the cheese and ham - love my croissant sandwiches that way. The ham wasn't dry or crisp at the ends and the cheese wasn't too cheesy. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Now, I see why this place is so packed. read more

They got carbs for days! It was decent but the line was way too long for the food they had here so I can't really say it's a good place to grab a quick bite. There was limited seating and it was tight on space so even waiting (especially with a kid) was a hassle. If you're one of those people who need space, try not to come during peak hours if you decide to come at all. 50 minutes wait time for a croque monsieur. Come on guys. And The peddler burger took "just" 45 minutes. Just 10-15 people and every one else got there food before us. Had to ask 3 times. The burger came in rare "that's how we cook it" Didn't have time to wait so we asked for a box for the rest of the food. Be aware that takes another 5-10minutes. Being a sucker for bakeries, I chose The Bread Peddler as my brunch venue. The apple fritter isn't your typical fritter from your neighborhood donut shop. This one has cut apples atop delicious buttery bread, and baked until everything is crisp. Light buttery flavor, but if you have challenges with tough, crunchy bread, you might want to order something else. I ordered the classic breakfast of bread, two poached eggs, potatoes and meat. Wow. Everything was cooked to perfection - nothing too mushy, nothing too tough. This is a quick review. Well, if you're looking for a quick breakfast then this will hit the spot. We just went in for some little bits and bobs to take to eat on the go. I opted for an apple fritter and some green tea pearl tea. The tea was really wonderfully smooth and beautifully fragrant. The man at the counter was very nice to give me a tip on steeping my tea without burning the tea. That was really nice and helped to make the tea turn out perfect. The apple fritter was crisp on the outside and decently moist on the inside. I did get a taste of the apples but it was missing a little bit flavor-wise. Not disappointing though, just different. Everything appears to be made by hand and from scratch and I think that's cool. My friend got an Americano and some sort of brie and fruit pastry/turnover/scone. I know turnovers and scones are not the same so Shhh. Anyway, she also enjoyed both of her items and it was quick and easy to order. I didn't get a feeling of pretentiousness from the counter staff at all. They were all quite nice. Like I said, it's a nice place to pop in and great a nice breakfast to fill you up or just some bites to go. Our little breakfast was perfect and didn't fill us up too much so we could walk around Capitol Lake. I'll probably go back for an actual breakfast or lunch. I always loved the bread Peddler. Andre takes every effort to make things right and to be as close to French for to French Patisserie as possible. However of late I have found that large holes in the center n upper part of various bread loaves can mean a lot of things. I won't a enumerate the many reasons that could be, but it's repetitive, needs to be a bit better since BP is now in Thriftway's and the Coops around town. read more

I just wrote a review for Sofie's Gelato and realised I had not yet written one of these for Bread Peddler which is literally right next door. A few years ago I went on a first date and decided to stop in at Bread Peddler and grab a few items in a small bag to give to my date. I completely blame those baked wonders for the success of this relationship which is now - literally - the longest in my life. How anyone could ever NOT fall in love with a Bread Peddler MORNING ROLL or COOKIE is well outside my realm of understanding. The crew there are extremely efficient, super nice, and make some great coffee as well! Make sure to pick up a sweet treat even if all you wanted was a loaf of bread. And stop by for some lunch. I agree with other reviewers that while the food here is tasty it is extremely expensive. For two people it was $31 before tip and we didn't order very much. We shared a small cherry galette (like an open-faced pie) and a savory strata (like a bread pudding but with dried tomatoes and feta). My husband had their biscuits and gravy (two large, fluffy biscuits, lots of good sausage gravy, and two over-easy eggs on top). My husband got a sweet tea (extremely small for a large) and I had a small London Fog. The staff is great. I just wish their food was more affordable so we could visit more than every great once in a while. I'd like to recommend Phoebe's cafe as a slight less expensive but also tasty option. read more

We recently stopped by based on a recommendation of a friend. We grabbed a couple of treats to-go. Baked goods were okay. The croissants were okay, but need a little work. (We had recently watched Chef Dominique Ansel's Masterclass on croissants and we were armed with the knowledge of what makes the best croissants). I must have got lucky when I went here because I received a freshly made roast beef sandwich. The bread was warm and nice to chew on. The horseradish sauce in the sandwich was a little too salty but I enjoyed the sandwich overall. Although this place is known for sandwiches please give their curry couscous a try! It was the perfect appetizer during a sunny lunch and it had just the right amount of curry. My only suggestion with the dish is that they chop the lettuce a little smaller but that doesn't really effect how I feel about the dish taste wise. I also agree with other posters that the customer service could use some improvement. I can deal with apathetic but I dislike it when I ask for something so small (ex: a fork) and the person helping me has to roll their eyes as if its an annoyance for them. read more

I think it is a requirement to be a rude, self righteous hipster to work at this place. I have been over a dozen times and have encountered a pleasant employee only once or twice. I love their food and they have a nice variety of options to try. Seating can be very limited and sometimes you have to hover around someone getting ready to leave to quickly take their spot and then wait for the table to be wiped down by an annoyed employee. Prices are fairly high. Coffee is watered down and gross which is crazy since we have so many awesome coffee roasting businesses within a mile (Dancing Goats,Olympia Coffee Roasting, Covabrelli). No excuse for crappy coffee in downtown Olympia. Parking can also be tough in this area (on street parking) - be prepared to step over sleeping transients on the sidewalk and be hassled aggressively by strung out pan handlers. read more

As we first walked in the atmosphere was hectic, but the smell hit your nose and it was yummy. The display looked amazing with all of the pastries! My husband got a butter croissant, which had too much butter and I ordered the blueberry scone, which was under cooked in just two tiny places. It was still yummy although definitely had too much butter. The coffee is delectable! I ordered a 12oz hot latte and my husband ordered an americano- only catch was they used a hand sink for his. I'm pretty sure hands are only supposed to go in a hand sink although that water may be filtered so I don't know! It was still good. I ordered the eggs benedict with ham, and he ordered the classic breakfast. Everything cost around $41 which isn't bad for everything we got.
